In a new interview with Mens Health, Stormzy has reflected on his fitness and physique building journey, and how he prepared for his iconic headline performance at Glastonbury.

Speaking about the monumental festival slot, he said “I was trying to get in a shape I’ve never been in in my life.” He said of preparing physically, “I was taking my body and my nutrition to this entirely new place, while also trying to create this flipping iconic, legendary set. I had headlined Wireless, but this was a whole new beast. This was pulling all the stops out.’

While he’s not been shy to show his muscular build before, going shirtless in live performances and an album cover, he says he wasn’t always so athletic – “I’m not someone who grew up super fit. I’ve always been kind of bog standard.”

His highly praised set at Glasto was a milestone achievement – the first UK rapper to headline the festival, as well as the first Black British solo artist. He used the platform to deliver messages about politics, social equality and knife crime, all the while giving a blistering performance featuring a choir, a live band, and even ballet dancers.

He tells of how he assembled a team to get him looking in the best shape possible. One of those involved was performance nutritionist James Collins, who’s also worked with Olympians and footballers. James recalls Stormzy saying “I’m headlining Glasto, I need to have energy to go from a normal 60-minute set to a 90-minute set and also I need to look like I’m in the best shape, so when I take my top off it needs to have real impact.”

The Croydon MC was inspired to get a nutritionist and work on his fitness after watching Beyonce’s Homecoming film, following her preparation and performance for Coachella. He was mesmerized by her ability to sing so well and do the most “insane choreography”, saying that she’s an inspiration on and off stage, and “the best to ever do it.”

The “Shut Up” songmaker was recently shouted out by Gareth Southgate in his selection for Desert Island Discs. The ex-England manager told Radio 4 that he chose Ed Sheeran’s “Shape Of You” remix featuring Stormzy, saying that he thinks he’s “another amazing British artist”, and that one of the “reasons to be proud of our nation, music talent is one of those things.”

Stormzy has been involved with the football world before. In November 2022, he teamed up with Adidas and other brands to form “Merky FC”, a programme to help Black British youth find jobs in the football industry. Seeking to create leadership positions in the football industry, their website says it was “Created in response to the fact that currently only 6.7% of leadership positions in football are held by those with Black Heritage.”

His interview with Mens Health also mentions that he’s staying in LA, currently working on new material for his fourth album. He says of the chaotic feeling of creating, ‘Every time I make an album, I’m like, “Okay, let’s start this fucking tornado and let’s get over it.”’ You can read the full interview here.

Glastonbury’s tribute set for, The Prodigy’s, Keith Flint, has been cancelled, after ex-Prodigy member Gizz Butt received backlash. The special DJ set was due to take place, in the Shangri-La area of Glastonbury, between the 26th and 30th of June 2019, at Worthy Farm, Somerset.

Former guitarist for The Prodigy, Gizz Butt was set to DJ the special tribute set, that would have seen him and others honour the late Prodigy frontman, Keith Flint. The musician – who was a live guitarist for the rave outfit, The Prodigy, in the ’90s – was due to perform the ‘Keith Flint Appreciation Hour’ DJ set, at Worthy Farm, next month.

The announcement comes after last week the Shangri-La stage revealed their line-up, earlier last week. However, now Gizz Butt – whose real name is Graham Butt – has revealed that he can no longer participate in the special DJ set.

Taking to social media, on Saturday the 4th of May, to announce the news, Butt, said: “I’m sorry to say this but I’m going to pull out of DJ’ing the Keith Flint appreciation hour. People are seeing it as an act of self-promotion and I never wanted that. Also, it’s getting so big with the press and I don’t feel worthy of it.”

In a follow-up post, Butt elaborated on his reasons for cancelling the special tribute set, explaining that his plans had received backlash and upset those who were close to Flint.

Thanking fans for their “encouragement and the love”, Butt, said: “My reason for standing down isn’t anything to do with internet trolls. It’s due to the reason that it’s messing with the heads of some people that are closest to Keith and it’s causing upset and I never intended for that to happen.

“The last thing I want to do is cause upset and create bad karma, especially with people that are the most important people involved, that are grieving and will be for a long time.”

Butt went on to say that he is planning an alternative tribute to the late frontman, Keith Flint, “for the benefit of mental health”, adding that “it won’t be seen as capitalising on a tragic situation.”

Butt, said: “I will do something for the benefit of mental health but it won’t be seen as capitalising on a tragic situation. It will be something else. Prodigy fans, you know what where I’m coming from with this statement.”

His post concluded: “I’m sorry that I can’t do this. You know I’d like to but I want to respect other people’s emotions and wishes and for this reason, I must stand down.”

Shortly after Keith Flint’s tragic death, Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis revealed that The Prodigy were booked to play this year’s festival. She also described Flint as “an incredible frontman.”

After the news broke of the singer’s death, Eavis took to social media to remember Flint. In an emotional post, Eavis shared footage from the band’s legendary headline performance at Glastonbury 1997 – where they topped the bill alongside Radiohead and Ash.

“We are so saddened to hear about the passing of Keith Flint,” Eavis wrote, on Twitter. “He’s played here so many times with the Prodigy and was booked for 2019. What an incredible frontman. Here’s a clip from ‘97 when they were the first dance band to headline Glastonbury – a huge, unforgettable moment.”

The line-up was confirmed on Twitter this morning, with The Killers and The Cure being revealed as the final Pyramid Stage headliners. The announcement comes after Stormzy was confirmed, to headline the Pyramid Stage, back in November 2018.

Minogue,50, was originally supposed to headline the Pyramid Stage, in 2004, but had to cancel to undergo treatment. Basement Jaxx stepped in to replace her, and covered her hit ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’, in tribute. Minogue returned to Worthy Farm in 2010 to cameo with Scissor Sisters, but has never played a full set.

Speaking to the Associated Press earlier this year, Minogue said: “When I was supposed to do it I think I would have been the first solo female to headline in however many years it was, so I was really proud of that at that time. Obviously it didn’t happen. So yes, it would be amazing and very emotional to be standing there and doing what I didn’t get to do all those years ago, for sure.”

The pop superstar knows how to put on a, crowd-pleasing, show – so she’s bound to draw a huge audience. The star is no stranger to success, with 51 singles, in the UK top 40, 7 UK number one singles- including ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’ and ‘I Should Be So Lucky’, and 6 UK number one albums, under her belt.

Kylie will be joined on the line-up by, grime star, Stormzy, who has been announced as the Friday night headliner. No other acts have been revealed to-date, but rumoured headliners include Paul McCartney, Arctic Monkeys, Madonna, Fleetwood Mac, and The Cure. Glastonbury 2019 will take place, at Worthy Farm, from the 26th to the 30th of June, after taking a fallow year in 2018. Tickets have already sold out but there’ll be full coverage on BBC TV, radio and online.

The festival will be taking place between the 26th and 30th of June 2019. A poster appeared in the window of an Oxfam shop in Streatham which announced the UK grime artist is the first headline act, set to perform the Pyramid stage at the festival, on Friday the 8th of June 2019.

The announcement came via a poster in the window of an Oxfam shop in Streatham – close to the star’s childhood home. Oxfam is an official partner of the festival. Last year marked a big breakthrough for UK grime when Boy Better Know headlined the Worthy Farm event’s Other Stage.

Glastonbury 2019 organisers have officially announced Stormzy as the first headliner for Glastonbury 2019. In a press release on the Glastonbury website they said: “We’re delighted to announce that Stormzy is confirmed as the first headliner for Glastonbury 2019. The multi award-winning British MC will headline the Pyramid Stage on Friday, June 28th.”

Co-organiser of the Glastonbury festival, Emily Eavis said: “Very happy to confirm Stormzy as our first headliner for next year. He’s one of the most exciting British artists to come along in years and after seeing him play here in 2017 we knew next time he had to come back and headline the Pyramid. See you there Friday night!”

Stormzy will be the first grime MC to headline the famous music festival. The 25-year-old artist performed at Glastonbury in 2017, when he appeared on the Other Stage and this summer he headlined Wireless festival. He performed a thrilling set on Glastonbury’s Other Stage in 2017, which will undoubtedly have persuaded organisers Michael and Emily Eavis to book him for the main stage.

The star performed hits from his debut album, ‘Gang Signs and Prayer’, as well as showcasing a piece of the Grenfell charity single, ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’, which was No 1 in the UK charts, that weekend. Stormzy dedicated the set to his mother, declaring, “Hey, mumzy, look at your boy now,” as he looked over the massive crowd.

Last week Emily Eavis, co-organiser of the Glastonbury Festival, hinted at Stormzy being a headliner. Speaking at BBC Music Introducing Live she revealed that the Friday headliner “hasn’t had a stage like this before”.

Continuing Eavis said: “We have got one of the artists that I’m most excited about in Britain right now. This to me is going to be a moment. And he can become the enormous person that he is, do you know what I mean?”

The announcement follows the huge success of the, ‘Big For Your Boots’ rapper’s, debut album ‘Gang Signs and Prayer’, which was released in 2017 to both critical and commercial success. It became the first grime album to reach No 1 in the UK charts, and was also one of the biggest-selling albums of the year.

‘Gang Signs and Prayer’ is Stormzy’s only album to date so the star won’t have a huge back catalogue of songs to refer to, but he has a second album in the works. Fans are now wondering whether this means Stormzy is preparing to release his new album before his Glastonbury performance next year.

This year Stormzy has performed at the Brit awards, launched a publishing imprint with Penguin, Merky Books, and founded a scholarship with Cambridge University for black students. He has also released his own autobiography, ‘Rise Up’, earlier this month.
