Liam Howlett and Maxim Reality, the two surviving members of the iconic big beat group, marked Flint’s 50th with a post through Twitter, paying tribute to the vocalist. In the post they said, “Happy birthday Flinty, not a single day passes u aren’t in our thoughts, we miss you brother, raise the roof wherever u are muthafukka !, L & M ….”

Included in the dedication were photos from throughout the years of Keith during his career in The Prodigy. During the 1990’s, The Prodigy achieved huge success, spawning two number one hits with ‘Firestarter’ and ‘Breathe’, other well known tracks including ‘Invaders Must Die’, ‘Warriors Dance’, and ‘Omen’, and by November 2018, were celebrating their seventh UK number one with ‘No Tourists’.

Recently, The Prodigy announced on social media that they would be making a return to the studio following Flint’s death. The post declared, “Back in the studio making noise,” the shot of Howlett with his hands on equipment was captioned, adding. “brand new Prodigy tunes are gonna roll , boooom #theprodigy #weliveforthebeats #weliveforever #cantstoptherock”. 

It is unknown whether or not Flint will be featured posthumously on any of the band’s new music. Back in July, a hooded fan altered a motorway sign marking the 25th anniversary of the release to their second album, ‘Music For The Jilted Generation’. The album spawned infamous singles including ‘One Love’, ‘No Good (Start The Dance)’, ‘Poison’ and ‘Voodoo People’. The sign gave directions to Braintree, Essex, where the band were founded in 1990, changed to 1994, the year in which the album was released, as seen below.

The post was headed by the caption ‘Respect to the jilted warriors’.

After Flint’s death, the band released a statement in a bid to help people tackle their own mental health issues on Instagram. “It has been a tough time for everyone over the last few weeks since Keef’s passing,” 

They added. “If you are struggling with depression, addiction or the impact of suicide, please do not suffer in silence.”

Flint died at the age of 49 on March 4, at his home in Essex.

A petition was started following the death of the singer, and has currently been signed by more than 10,000 people. On Monday 22, a meeting hosted by the Braintree District Council decided to hold further talks with Flint’s family, Leeroy Thornhill and Liam Howlett, (Flint’s bandmates), as well as the wider community of Prodigy fans.

The campaign was started by Saphya Gower, and she said that the band’s “music makes me feel alive, indestructible, invincible. I’ll be forever thankful to them”.

Born in Redbridge, North-East London, Flint formed the outfit with Liam Howlett and Leeory Thornhill in Braintree. The Prodigy are responsible for iconic tracks during the 1990’s, including ‘Firestarter’ and ‘Breathe’, both of which went to number one in the UK. Other hits include ‘Invaders Must Die’, ‘Omen’ and ‘Voodoo People’. Their seventh studio album, ‘No Tourists’, (the last to feature Flint), scored the band their seventh UK number one.

The leader of the council, Graham Butland, explained that they had been in conversation with the co-manager of The Prodigy, who’d said that there would be no objection to a statue provided that it was “tasteful”, and would not be a “literal representation” of Keith.

A post mortem determined that Keith had died by hanging, and a toxicology analysis confirmed that the singer had cocaine, alcohol and codeine in his system. Senior coroner Caroline Beasley-Murray said. “I’ve considered suicide,”

“To record that, I would have to have found that, on the balance of probabilities, Mr Flint formed the idea and took a deliberate action knowing it would result in his death. Having regard to all the circumstances I don’t find that there’s enough evidence for that.”

Versace described Flint poignantly as “My friend, and a disruptor of this world”.

The Italian fashion designer based her spring/summer 2020 show designs on Flint’s unique appearances and the rave culture prominent in the 1990’s. During the show, held in Milan, serving as an additional homage to the late musician, The Prodigy’s famous hit, ‘Firestarter’ was boomed onto the catwalk.

Models displayed Keith’s infamous look of double mohawks, tinted bug eyed sunglasses and bright colours throughout the show.

Keith Flint tragically died at the age of 49 back in March. An inquest heard that he had been found hanging by a friend at home, and in the end, reached an open verdict, as determined by senior coroner, Caroline Beasley-Murray.

The late frontman of The Prodigy was responsible for some of their biggest hits, including ‘Smack My Bitch Up’, ‘Breathe’, and ‘Firestarter’. Along with the Prodigy’s other band members, Liam Howlett and Maxim Reality, the latter two tracks became the group’s first UK number ones.

In November last year, The Prodigy released ‘No Tourists’, which went on to become their seventh consecutive number one album.

Keith’s funeral was held at St Mary’s Church in Bocking, Essex, on the 29th of March, attended by fans from all around the world, with some reaching out as far as Australia, indicating his incredible popularity, as well as the hearts and minds he had won over during his illustrious career.

Since Flint’s passing, the band went on to share a message through their Instagram, saying, “It has been a tough time for everyone over the last few weeks since Keef’s passing. If you are struggling with depression, addiction or the impact of suicide, please do not suffer in silence”.

His bandmates described Flint as “a true pioneer, innovator and legend”, and that, “he will be forever missed”.

The special DJ set was due to take place, in the Shangri-La area of Glastonbury, between the 26th and 30th of June 2019, at Worthy Farm, Somerset.

Former guitarist for The Prodigy, Gizz Butt was set to DJ the special tribute set, that would have seen him and others honour the late Prodigy frontman, Keith Flint. The musician – who was a live guitarist for the rave outfit, The Prodigy, in the ’90s – was due to perform the ‘Keith Flint Appreciation Hour’ DJ set, at Worthy Farm, next month.

The announcement comes after last week the Shangri-La stage revealed their line-up, earlier last week. However, now Gizz Butt – whose real name is Graham Butt – has revealed that he can no longer participate in the special DJ set.

Taking to social media, on Saturday the 4th of May, to announce the news, Butt, said: “I’m sorry to say this but I’m going to pull out of DJ’ing the Keith Flint appreciation hour. People are seeing it as an act of self-promotion and I never wanted that. Also, it’s getting so big with the press and I don’t feel worthy of it.”

In a follow-up post, Butt elaborated on his reasons for cancelling the special tribute set, explaining that his plans had received backlash and upset those who were close to Flint.


Thanking fans for their “encouragement and the love”, Butt, said: “My reason for standing down isn’t anything to do with internet trolls. It’s due to the reason that it’s messing with the heads of some people that are closest to Keith and it’s causing upset and I never intended for that to happen.

“The last thing I want to do is cause upset and create bad karma, especially with people that are the most important people involved, that are grieving and will be for a long time.”

Butt went on to say that he is planning an alternative tribute to the late frontman, Keith Flint, “for the benefit of mental health”,  adding that “it won’t be seen as capitalising on a tragic situation.”

Butt, said: “I will do something for the benefit of mental health but it won’t be seen as capitalising on a tragic situation. It will be something else. Prodigy fans, you know what where I’m coming from with this statement.”

His post concluded: “I’m sorry that I can’t do this. You know I’d like to but I want to respect other people’s emotions and wishes and for this reason, I must stand down.”

Shortly after Keith Flint’s tragic death, Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis revealed that The Prodigy were booked to play this year’s festival. She also described Flint as “an incredible frontman.”

After the news broke of the singer’s death, Eavis took to social media to remember Flint. In an emotional post, Eavis shared footage from the band’s legendary headline performance at Glastonbury 1997 – where they topped the bill alongside Radiohead and Ash.

“We are so saddened to hear about the passing of Keith Flint,” Eavis wrote, on Twitter. “He’s played here so many times with the Prodigy and was booked for 2019. What an incredible frontman. Here’s a clip from ‘97 when they were the first dance band to headline Glastonbury – a huge, unforgettable moment.”

The festival’s Shangri-La area has revealed it’s line-up for the 2019 festival, which features the Idles. The announcement comes after it has been confirmed a special DJ performance, in honour of The Prodigy’s Keith Flint, will take place at this year’s Shangri-La area.

After festival organiser, Emily Eavis stated that the remaining bill would be announced “one stage at a time” in the run-up to the Worthy Farm spectacular, the popular Shangri-La area has now unveiled who is on their bill, for June.

Among the names announced were the Idles, who have been confirmed to be making an appearance on the Truth Stage, in a late-night slot. Joining the punk rock band is US rapper, Denzel Curry, who will also perform along with French heavy metal group, Gojira. Joining them on the already electric bill will be The Damned, Craig Charles, and Elvana.

The following names have also been revealed to be joining the already stellar line-up, which include the likes of IDLES and Denzel Curry, and also heading to Worthy Farm, this June is Black Futures, Earache DJs, Employed To Serve, Entombed AD, Gizz Butt (Ex-Prodigy) – Keith Flint Appreciation Hour, Haggard Cat, and Heavy Lungs.

Gizz Butt, former live guitarist for The Prodigy, will perform a tribute DJ set titled ‘Keith Flint Appreciation Hour’, in a set that will honour the late singer, Keith Flint. Joining Butt will be Rob Da Bank and Charlie Sloth – who will be spinning tunes.

Glastonbury Shangri-La

In an announcement, released on Wednesday the 1st of May 2019, Glastonbury revealed that the Shangri-La area will take on the theme of ‘JUNKSTAPOSITION: RE-USE – RE-CYCLE – RE-SIST’. The announcement stated: !Shangri-La strives to illuminate progressive culture with great urgency – in the field and beyond.

“By holding a mirror up to the masses, creating conversations, encouraging activism and stimulating all of the senses at the same time, we aim to expand minds and open hearts, motivating people in politics and play.” Meanwhile, it goes on to describe the area as “radical” and “an incredible creative playground where this anarchic spirit continues to manifest in original and new ways.”

The latest announcement follows the reveal, last week, of The Common stage line-up. The reveal of The Common Stage line-up, last week, followed the reveal of The Field Of Avalon area line-up, which followed the announcement of the Silver Hayes area of Glastonbury announcing their line-up for 2019.

In a statement on Twitter the remaining members Liam Howlett and Maxim Reality said “It is with deepest shock and sadness that we can confirm the death of our brother and best friend Keith Flint. A true pioneer, innovator and legend. He will be forever missed. We thank you for respecting the privacy of all concerned at this time”. With Liam Howlett later putting out a personal Instagram post describing his sadness and confusion at Flint’s suicide.

Flint started out as a dancer and hype man for the band when he met DJ and Producer Liam Howlett in the early 1990s, but as the band developed he went on to become so much more than that. After the success of their first two albums, “Experience” and “Music For A Jilted Generation” Flint began to add his vocals to records, culminating in the absolutely incredible album “Fat Of The Land” consisting of the hit “Firestarter” and “Breathe”. And from that day The Prodigy, and Music as a whole, were never the same again. The band then went on to become one of the biggest names in music, and have been an inspiration for countless artists around the world. The group have broken down so many boundaries in music and headlined an incredible array of festivals, from the biggest stages in Dance and Indie music to setting crowds wild with a headline slot at Download, a heavy metal festival, in 2012. In 1997 The Prodigy were the first ever dance act to headline Glastonbury festival, and earlier today Emily Eavis Earlier confirmed the band had been booked to play Glastonbury festival this summer.

 

Following a lull and some questionable singles in the late 1990s the band took a break until they returned with an incredible statement and album. “Invaders Must Die” featuring tunes such as ‘Omen’ and ‘Warriors Dance’ this comeback record shot The Prodigy, and Flint, back into our consciousness and they had continued to establish their legacy as one of the all time musical pioneers ever since. Tributes have been flooding in on Twitter from a variety of artists, Djs and fans.

Away from the music Keith Flint is known as one of the nicest and kindest men in music, despite his outwardly aggressive appearance. Stories have been coming in from fans around the world about the incredible times they’ve met him, and famously the events that have happened in his pub. Famously Flint’s pub had an open fireplace, and everytime he put a log on the fire a guest would remark “you’re the firestarter”. Flint would then point to a jar placed on the bar and request the customer made a donation to the pot, which Flint would later give to charity.

It’s unknown what the future holds for the remaining members of the Prodigy, and if we will ever see them perform again. Tonight though, belongs to Keith.
