Back in April, Hot Chip, one of the UK’s most prolific and consistent synth-pop acts of the last few decades, announced their upcoming 8th LP Freakout / Release, set to drop on August 18th. This will be the follow-up to their 2019 output A Bath Full Of Ecstasy, you can find pre-order information here. The band also announced a short residency at Brixton Academy, but if any fans simply can’t survive the next few months waiting, the group have also announced a handful of in-store performances in August to celebrate the album’s release. Hot Chip is a band that has become renowned for never doing things by halves; so have also dropped 3 remixes of their most recent single ‘Down’ by Sworn Virgins, Nyra, and Selector Dub Narcotic, as a companion to the new shows. You can listen to the new tracks below.

As mentioned before, the band’s Brixton Academy residency will take up 4 nights in September, you can search for any remaining tickets here. The new instore dates will come before these gigs; right around the album’s release. The first will be at Kingston’s famous Banquet at PRYZM on August 18th (that’s right, before the album’s release), closely followed by a night in Brighton at Resident at Chalk on the 19th (release day, very exciting), before finally concluding back in London at Rough Trade East on the 23rd. Tickets for all 3 shows can be found here.

Al Doyle, one of the band’s many multi-instrumentalists, explained the album’s inspiration in a press release, “The idea of being out of control is always there in dance music, in a positive sense.” Frontman Alexis Taylor added, “By the time we were able to be back together, we were turning on a tap and having a lot of ideas being poured out quite quickly.” While everyone was commenting on the album, Joe Goddard, again a multi-instrumentalist, also decided to add, “We were living through a period where it was very easy to feel like people were losing control of their lives in different ways. There’s a darkness that runs through a lot of those tracks.”

In my opinion, Hot Chip have earned their title as one of the UK’s arguably more underrated dance groups. They may not have reached the festival-bill topping heights of a group like Disclosure, but their energy and consistency always lend themselves well to touring and performing. So, in the words of Selector Dub Narcotic, “No matter what the dancefloor, Hot Chip has the answer.”

Hot Chip have amassed a name for themselves as one of the UK’s most prolific, and consistent synth-pop acts of the last few decades; churning out new music give or take every 2 years since 2004 has led to a pretty dedicated legion of fans. Today, the band have announced their upcoming 8th LP Freakout / Release, set to drop on August 18th. This will be the follow up to their 2019 output A Bath Full Of Ecstasy, you can find pre-order information here. To mark the occasion, the band have also released our first taste of the new tunes with “Down”. If the new single is anything to go by, then fans of Hot Chip will probably enjoy it, their idiosyncratic sound comes through in full force here. You can listen to the new track, and watch its accompanying Douglas Hart and Steve Mackey directed video below.

In keeping with the band’s usual brand of partying, go big or go home, they have decided to commemorate the album’s release with a 4-night stint at London’s iconic Brixton Academy. Set for September 21st, the band will play 4 shows on consecutive nights presumably with myriad musical guests. The new album sees contributions from Soulwax, Canadian rapper Cadence Weapon, and London’s own DJ and musician Lou Hayter, so maybe a few surprise guests along the way are a reasonable thing to expect. Tickets for these shows go on sale this Friday (April 22nd) at 9am. You can find out more ticket information here. The shows come in the middle of a pre-existing tour that will take the band all across the states, and then around Europe’s festival scene. So even if you don’t manage to bag any tickets to the Brixton shows, you’re never a million miles away from one of their shows.

I’m quietly confident that everyone that even almost has an association with music; whether that be a casual listener, a Billie Eilish super-fan, or just a freelance journalist writing your thoughts online – everyone in the UK woke up to the announcement of some pretty substantial names heading over to California’s own legendary Coachella Festival. Spread throughout the eclectic lineup we see a healthy serving of UK artists; including the festival’s first headliner since 2019 – Harry Styles. After 2 years of delays and cancellations, of course, due to COVID-19, this year’s lineup is due to be a special one, and with the festival going ahead in only 3 months set over 2 weekends in April – 15th to 17th, and 22nd to 24th. Fans are getting excited quickly.

As well as the one and only Harry Styles on Friday, Northampton punk-rapper Slowthai has joined the bill after the success of his 2021 output Tyron, Bristol’s beloved post-punk powerhouse IDLES, Space rock maestros Spiritualized will also see the crowds of Coachella shortly after the release of their new album. Other artists performing on both of the festivals Friday’s include; indie darling Phoebe Bridgers, Aussie psych-rock legends King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Lil Baby may show off some of his new collaborative album with Lil Durk The Voice of Our Heroes, the DJ tent will also see quite a lot of variety with early 2000s classics like The Avalanches appearing alongside the up and coming Logic1000.

Saturday’s headliner Billie Eilish is also joined by a host of acts from over the pond; Reading and Leeds Festival headliners Disclosure sit particularly high on the bill, synth-pop party Hot Chip come a little earlier, along with Floating Points (who recently made it into our top 10 UK albums of 2021 with Promises), Mercury Prize Winner Arlo Parks, and Rina Sawayama show off some of Britain’s best female artists at the moment, and black midi brings their own blend of post-punk-jazz-noise to the desert. Flume, Megan Thee Stallion and BROCKHAMPTON fill out the upper section of the lineup, while Freddie Gibbs and Madlib, and Japanese Breakfast turn up for anyone else wanting something different.

The artist formerly known as Kanye West (now simply labelled Ye) is set to headline the festivals final days with 1/3 of indie icons The xx playing in the form of idiosyncratic drummer/DJ Jamie xx, Fatboy Slim keeps up the beach vibes and beabadoobee brings a little indie ambience to an otherwise dance and hip hop heavy day, Duke Dumont brings the British club scene with him too. The bunch will be joined by Hip-hop duo Run the Jewels, Doja Cat, Maggie Rogers, and even Sweden’s own punk output Viagra Boys.

Ticket information can be found here.

Synth-pop prodigies ‘Hot Chip’, have collaborated with Brit-Pop icon Jarvis Cocker, on their brand-new track ‘Straight To The Morning’. The single dropped this morning (23rd November), mere weeks after the group’s last release ‘Late Night Tales’, their take on the iconic compilation album.

‘Straight To The Morning’ features the most notorious attributes of Hot Chip’s addictive sound, littered with swelling synths, an irresistible bassline, and blaring horns that feel reminiscent of the groups 2000s work. However, the inclusion of Cocker elevates the track entirely, adding some much-welcomed grit to the single’s disco flavour. The Brit-Pop darling’s call and response with Hot Chip lead singer Alexis Taylor highlights the difference in the two voices, and yet, the antithesis of Cocker’s husky vocals, and Taylor’s tenor-lines provides a contrast that truly balances the record. The result is a track that exudes a euphoria only found on a dancefloor at 2am, where the nights is forever, and the attendees are immortal.

The band collaborated with Cocker after performing a DJ set in Paris together, being inspired to create the club-focused track as a relief of sorts, from the ongoing global crisis. “‘Straight to the Morning’ is a disco anthem about going out, for a time when people really can’t, and it features our friend Jarvis Cocker urging us to go ‘straight through until the break of dawn,’” said Hot Chip. “Somehow he seems an unlikely figure in this all, and we like it that way.” Despite the unlikeliness of Cocker’s feature, the artist seems equally as impacted by the collaboration “This was the very last musical session I was involved in before lockdown. It felt very poignant to be singing a song about dancing all night long in a club whilst knowing it wouldn’t be possible to do such a thing for the foreseeable future.” Cocker stated on his instagram. “We danced around the studio quite a lot in the meantime though. It was fun to be a member of the Straight Through Crew for a day.”

The 80s inspired visuals provided for track are equally joyous, depicting a group of teenage girls at an unsupervised sleepover. Throughout the video we see them gorge on sweets, engage in Nerf gun wars, and perform Karaoke numbers, all while Jarvis Cocker serenades through a TV screen. It’s a celebration of youth, get-togethers, and having a good time, that like the track itself, radiates an infectious energy. Overall, Hot Chip’s new single is unmatched in how it entertains, and will stick with listeners until we can return to the dancefloor, and celebrate the captivating new single in style.

Hot Chip are the latest band to join the Late Night Tales series, with their 19-track mixtape set to be released on October 2. In the lead up to the album drop, they’ve shared a cover of ‘Candy Says’, the 11th track on the album – across social media, the band talked about their special memories of this song. Hot Chip will also contribute three exclusive songs to their mix. Listen to their cover here.

In addition to their new material, Hot Chip’s mix includes Rhythm & Sound, Fever Ray and Nils Frahm. The full tracklist is below.

Late Night Tales is a series of artist curated compilation albums, whose contributors include Arctic Monkeys’ Matt Helders, Fatboy Slim and Belle and Sebastian. For the most part, the albums include a cover by the curating artists, alongside a playlist of ‘late night’ songs. Often there is also a ‘story’ or a reading performed by a famous performer – Hot Chip have chosen an excerpt from Finnegans Wake. Lead singer, Alexis Taylor, spoke in a press release about the different ways the project might be interpreted.

It will include 3 new Hot Chip songs, an exclusive cover of The Velvet Underground’s ‘Candy Says’, and some of our favourite pieces of music for late night listening, new and old… You can preorder the compilation and stream ‘Candy Says’ right now! Link in Bio ‘Candy Says’ is a favourite of ours, and is a song that Joe and myself used to perform at school concerts when Hot Chip was first beginning in the late ‘90s. According to Taylor, the band approached Late Night Tales in different ways: “I think we all had slightly different understandings of what a Late Night Tales compilation might consist of; varying interpretations of the brief.” He detailed what their different understandings were:

“For some the mix might be what you’d want to listen to as your late night continues, after a night out. For others maybe it suggested a selection of music for listening to as you drift off to sleep; then again it could just be music evocative of night time, or concerned with its traditionally “darker” moods.”

“We’ve put together a mix of music which ties all of these ideas together and represents some of our favourite music new and old, some of it directly influential on Hot Chip and some of it music we have discovered and loved, been surprised by and connected to. There are three new songs of ours which we’re really proud of, and which I think connect naturally with the nocturnal world the compilation speaks of, and a cover of “Candy Says” which is one of the first songs the very early version of Hot Chip played when we were still at school.”

Late Night Tales also released a sample of the Hot Chip album, which you can watch now. The full mix will be released on October 2.

The album will be the bands 7th release and their first since 2015’s “Why Make Sense”.

Earlier in the week the band put on a storming set as part of the 6 Music Festival in Liverpool. The band have established a reputation as an incredible live act, having been part of amazing shows at Glastonbury festival in the past, as well as others around the country, and they will be headlining Blue Dot Festival alongside Kraftwerk later in the year.

Kraftwork, with a 3D DJ set, were announced as the first headliners October and Saturday only day tickets were already sold out before this afternoon’s announcement. Today however was the first chance anyone got to see the beginnings of a complete line up, leaving fans ecstatic and artists honoured to be playing. With such a wide range of artists, both new and classic, the festival is hoping to cater for all tastes, and it seems that even the artists playing are excited about the other headliners.
