British band The Wombats just released their sixth album ‘Oh The Ocean’, their first album release since 2022. Alongside the album, the Liverpudlian band released official visuals for each tracks on their Youtube channel. This album launches The Wombats new era. A project that grooves with social anxiety, internal strife, compulsive behaviours and the dilemmas and tribulations of Los Angeles life, where lead singer Matthew Murphy resides with his family.

Kicking off with the first single ‘Sorry I’m Late, I Didn’t Want To Come’ back in October 2024, Murphy shared in an interview with NME, how the single focuses on his social anxiety, describing it as being: “about constantly defaulting to a Lone Wolf mindset, and what the real-life consequences of that may be”.

The album title also refers to a trip to the beach Murphy took with his family. Speaking about it, the frontman said: “I’ve been to many beaches and seas and coasts over the years but for some reason it felt like the first time I had ever seen it and was truly present. There was this revelation that I had been living a life caught up in my own head, or in some kind of racing helmet or with blinkers on. It was really a potent experience.”

Continuing, he said: “I felt like I saw everything new for the first time, and was aware that I had been so selfish to not take in how crazy the world and life is. I’d been caught up in my own BS for way too long. The album offers up some internal questions like: why are my head and body disconnected all the time? Why am I incapable at times of seeing any form of beauty in the world or in others? Why do I expect the world to conform to my will? Why do I never stop and smell the flowers?”

Released on December 17, 2024, ‘My Head Is Not My Friend’ tackles the internal conflict many feel when thoughts become an obstacle rather than a guide. The song’s lyrics paint a vivid picture of the mental tug-of-war, where clarity and chaos fight for control, best represented in the lyrics: “Push away and don’t get close, doomsday scenarios.” Murphy’s vocal delivery is rich with emotion, but the combination of the lyrics and the band’s signature vibrant sound gives the track a moody yet melodic atmosphere, proving that the band can make any song poignant and catchy at the same time.

The single is a glimpse into their upcoming sixth studio album, ‘Oh! The Ocean’, set for release on February 14, 2025. The band has released tracks prior to this one, called ‘Blood On The Hospital Floor’ and ‘I’m Sorry, I Didn’t Want To Come,’ which have provided a deep insight into what can be expected for fans.

‘Blood On The Hospital Floor’ delivers an emotional punch with a raw narrative and layered instrumentation, with lyrics such as “my mood, it swings like the weather” that display vulnerability. In contrast to this, ‘I’m Sorry, I Didn’t Want To Come’ is a brighter, more playful exploration of introspective themes. It blends clever lyrics like “how about we talk about me now? How about you let me go free now?” and matches them with an energetic tempo that mirrors the band’s classic indie-pop sensibilities. Together, these tracks suggest that the album will explore many different themes, marrying them with thoughtful storytelling and vibrant soundscapes that are undeniably catchy.

As they prepare for the album’s release, The Wombats are gearing up for a UK arena tour scheduled for March 2025. Known for their high-energy performances and engaging stage presence, the band is set to play a mix of old favourites and newer tracks all over the UK. Tickets are still available but at low availability for many shows, so whether you’re a new fan or an old one, there is still a chance for you to connect with the music that has solidified their reputation as one of indie rock’s standouts.

The release of ‘My Head Is Not My Friend’ serves as a strong lead-up to what looks like a very exciting 2025 for The Wombats. Their unique ability to balance introspective themes with vibrant, danceable energy proves why the band remains a beloved presence in the indie genre. As ‘Oh! The Ocean’ approaches, fans can expect a collection of tracks that reflect the band’s growth while staying true to what has made their music so impactful across two decades.

The 2025 lineup boasts an impressive selection of UK talent, ranging from legendary bands to contemporary stars. While no major UK solo artists are confirmed as of now, announcements are still being made and updates may follow as the festival approaches.

Glass Animals are a British indie rock band from Oxford, formed in 2010. Known for their dreamy, experimental sound and lush production, they blend indie rock with elements of electronic, R&B, and psychedelic pop. The band gained international fame with their chart-topping hit ‘Heat Waves’ from their album ‘Dreamland’ (2020). The song peaked at #5 on the UK Singles Chart, making it one of the band’s highest-charting songs in their home country.

The British indie rock band Kaiser Chiefs is known for their energetic performances and catchy anthems, they gained fame with hits like ‘Ruby’, ‘I Predict a Riot’, and ‘Oh My God’. Their music blends indie rock, Britpop, and post-punk revival styles. Their hit ‘Ruby’ debuted at #1 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming the Kaiser Chiefs’ first and only UK chart-topper. The band has recently announced a series of outdoor shows to commemorate the 20th anniversary of their debut album ‘Employment’.

Another exciting band on the lineup are The Wombats. The Liverpool indie rock band is known for their infectious energy, witty lyrics, and danceable tunes. They gained fame with hits like ‘Let’s Dance to Joy Division’, ‘Moving to New York’, and ‘Greek Tragedy’. The band currently has a new album on the way, ‘Oh! The Ocean’, which is set to release on February 14, 2025. The band has so far described ‘Oh! The Ocean’ as their most ambitious album to date, blending their trademark upbeat sound with darker, introspective undertones.

Aside from these indie rock bands, the Mad Cool Festival will also host Bloc Party, a band formed in London in 1999, which blends post-punk revival with alternative and electronic elements. The lineup is rich with other American music acts scheduled such as Olivia Rodrigo, Kings of Leon, Foster The People, and Iggy Pop as the headliners.

The 2025 edition will host over 60 artists across multiple stages, offering an unforgettable experience for music lovers. Mad Cool also places a strong emphasis on eco-friendly practices, making it a favourite for environmentally conscious attendees. Whether you’re a fan of indie rock, electronic beats, or just want to experience a world-class festival, Mad Cool 2025 promises to be a must-attend event with tickets to be found through their official website.

Manic Street Preachers – ‘Critical Thinking’

The Manic Street Preachers, an iconic Welsh rock band formed in 1986, are celebrated for their mix of anthemic rock and introspective, often political lyrics. The band’s upcoming album, ‘Critical Thinking’, is scheduled for release on January 31, 2025. This will be their fifteenth studio album, following 2021’s ‘The Ultra Vivid Lament’.

Early reports suggest that ‘Critical Thinking’ will continue the lush, orchestral soundscapes introduced in their previous work, with a balance of introspection and the socially conscious lyrics the band is known for. While the specifics of the album’s themes haven’t been fully disclosed, the title ‘Critical Thinking’ hints at a reflective, possibly politically charged narrative, fitting their reputation for engaging with societal issues.

The album will feature the single ‘Hiding In Plain Sight’, with the bassist Nicky Wire on lead vocals, a rare occurrence in the band’s discography.

Ed Sheeran – Title unknown

Ed Sheeran, one of the UK’s most successful singer-songwriters, is known for his ability to blend heartfelt lyrics with a variety of musical styles, from acoustic ballads to upbeat pop tracks. Since his debut with ‘+’ in 2011, Sheeran has become a global sensation, delivering chart-topping albums like ‘x’, ‘÷’, and ‘-’. After the introspective and acoustic-driven tone of ‘-’ (2023), Sheeran has hinted that his 2025 album will mark a return to the pop-centric style that defined his earlier hits like ‘Shape of You’ and ‘Bad Habits’.

While Sheeran hasn’t disclosed specific themes, he has mentioned that this album reflects a “new chapter” in his life, possibly inspired by personal milestones such as fatherhood and his evolving perspective as an artist. Sheeran’s ability to reinvent his sound while maintaining widespread appeal makes this upcoming release one of the most anticipated albums of 2025.

The Wombats – ‘Oh! The Ocean’

The Wombats are a British indie rock band formed in Liverpool in 2003, known for their catchy melodies, quirky lyrics, and energetic sound, they gained fame with hits like ‘Let’s Dance to Joy Division’ and ‘Moving to New York’. Over the years, their music has evolved to incorporate electronic elements while maintaining their indie charm. The Wombats’ sixth studio album, ‘Oh! The Ocean’, is scheduled for release on February 14, 2025.

The band has described ‘Oh! The Ocean’ as their most ambitious album to date, blending their trademark upbeat sound with darker, introspective undertones. The album reportedly explores themes of mental health, isolation, and finding solace in unexpected places, inspired by the band’s experiences during recent global challenges. The single ‘Sorry I’m Late, I Didn’t Want to Come’ is already generating buzz for its witty lyrics and infectious chorus.

Sam Fender – ‘People watching’

Sam Fender is a British singer-songwriter and musician from North Shields, England. Known for his powerful vocals, anthemic indie-rock sound, and deeply personal and socially aware lyrics, Fender has become one of the most celebrated artists of his generation. His debut album, ‘Hypersonic Missiles’ (2019), and follow-up, ‘Seventeen Going Under’ (2021), both received critical acclaim, with the latter earning him a BRIT Award for Best British Alternative/Rock Act.

Sam Fender’s third studio album, ‘People Watching’, is set for release on February 21, 2025. As the title suggests, the album explores themes of observation, human connection, and introspection. Fender has revealed in interviews that the album was inspired by his experiences during the last few years, including the pressures of fame and his reflections on the people and stories around him.

While specific tracks haven’t been officially released yet, early reports indicate that the album’s lead single will premiere in early 2025. Fender has described it as a “cathartic anthem” that sets the tone for the rest of the record. Following the massive success of ‘Seventeen Going Under’, which resonated deeply with fans and critics alike, ‘People Watching’ is expected to further solidify Fender’s reputation as one of the most vital voices in contemporary music.

The Sherlocks – ‘Everything Must Make Sense‘

The Sherlocks are an English indie rock band formed in 2010 in South Yorkshire. Known for their anthemic, guitar-driven sound, The Sherlocks gained attention with tracks like ‘Chasing Shadows’ and ‘Will You Be There?’. Their fifth studio album, ‘Everything Must Make Sense’, is set to be released on February 21, 2025.

The band describes the album as a return to their raw, guitar-driven roots, with a fresh energy inspired by their live performances. The album will reportedly tackle themes of finding clarity in chaos, personal growth, and navigating life’s uncertainties. The Sherlocks have so far released three singles from the new album, including ‘Death Of Me‘, ‘Man on the Loose‘, and ‘Bones‘.

With a loyal fanbase and a reputation for heartfelt, relatable music, ‘Everything Must Make Sense’ is highly anticipated by indie rock enthusiasts. It’s poised to showcase The Sherlocks’ maturity and reaffirm their place in the UK music scene.

Aside from the artists above, Inhaler, The Darkness, FKA twigs, and Sophie Ellis-Bextor, have all also announced the release of their new albums in the new year. Some of them as early as January 2025.

YNOT festival have officially unveiled the line-up for the 2023 edition of the festival. Although more is due to be released, the top headliners Royal Blood, Kasabian and the Wombats will join Paul Weller, James, and DMA’S for the festival in Derbyshire. Bombay Bicycle Club are due to play early on Thursday for the most eager of festival-goers. It is the second edition since the festival had to be cancelled for two years in a row in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid-19.

The organisers spoke of the new acts on the Instagram post below, saying “SO excited to welcome The Lathums, Sea Girls, Mystery Jets, Pigeon Detectives, Heather Small, Yonaka, Caity Baser, Thomas Headon, CMAT, late night DJs Hannah Wants & Faithless, comedy headliners Dom Joly & Angelos Epithemou, the return of Barrioke + LOADS LOADS MORE to the Peaks this summer. It’s going to be the biggest one yet.”

There are plenty of acts for fans and festival goers to be excited for.

The rock duo Royal Blood are headlining after the surprise release of a new single “Honeybrains” in March, and with rumours circulating of a new album. They are playing in between other festivals, supporting Muse on select dates for their world tour, and their own tour dates. They tweeted about their headline slot:

They keep on coming. We’ll be headlining @ynotfestival in July. It’s time to roll with the rockers so we can rock with the rollers. https://t.co/u90sdSXlLH pic.twitter.com/vZFrfSGshc

Alongside them are rock band Kasabian, playing the festival after the success of their seventh album The Alchemist’s Euphoria last year. The band sold out their last UK tour in the winter, with fellow YNOT-performers The Lathums as support.

Liverpudlian indie rock band The Wombats will also be returning to headline the festival. The band formed in 2003, and achieved their first UK number one album last year, with Fix Yourself, Not The World. The festival announced their return on Instagram below, saying “In a few months’ time we’ll be chilling in the fields listening to The Wombats boys do what they do best. Who’s excited for this one??”

Pop sensation Maisie Peters is also set to perform after a gigantic fews years supporting Ed Sheeran on his world tour, performing her own sold out tour over the past few months, and after the release of her second album The Good Witch, which will be out on June 16th 2023.

It is the festivals 16th year, since its creation in 2005. Their website says “Starting life as a house party in 2005, our party spilt over into a festival in some of the most stunning countryside around. Some 14 years on, we still have the same ethos at heart – Enjoy amazing music, great food and carefree fun in the heart of the beautiful Peak District.”

The offical YNOT 2023 playlist can be streamed below, featuring all of the festivals’ top acts for fans to prepare for the epic weekend.

The tour is in support of their latest album, Fix Yourself, Not The World. Described by mxdwn as “colourfully catchy, upbeat and classy“, the LP became the group’s first-ever number one charting album in the UK just last month. Speaking on the exciting news, the band said that “It’s been an amazing journey since we started back in 2003 and this is such a career milestone for us. Thanks to everyone who helped us make this album … it really does take a lot of wonderful hard working people to make and put an album out.”

Created as lockdown forced people inside their homes, the band had to play the material in different countries, recording the LP remotely. Wombat drummer Dan Haggis spoke about this process, saying that “The album wouldn’t have sounded exactly the same if we’d just all been in the same room. You can’t help but be influenced by where you are, who you were, what the room sounds like …. I think the fact that Murph was doing guitars and vocals in a room altogether in a different country, everything was slightly different than it would have sounded. And I think that made the album richer, sonically.”

The group spoke to OfficialCharts.com concerning their win, “Number 1 in the UK! Thank you so much. This is a proper career milestone. Thank you to everyone who helped us make the album; to everyone who bought the album, streamed it. This is pretty surreal. Here’s to making ‘indie landfill’ great again!”

The group’s number one album was released on 14th January 2022 via British label AWAL and has already sired four singles. The LP’s most recent single entitled “Everything I Love Is Going To Die” was released on 15th November 2021, an accompanied music video was also released with the track. Lead vocalist Matthew Murphy gave the following description for the single, “The song is about the impermanence of life, and with that in mind, the beauty of each passing second, Everything I Love… Key line for me is ‘Icarus was my best friend, so I’m gonna make him proud in the end‘, which I guess is a playful take on living life to its fullest even though the consequences of that might be dire. Certainly not a call to Nihilism, however, but perhaps a call to being present and the joy that can be found in appreciating each moment we find ourselves in.”

The viral success on TikTok of Oliver Nelson’s remix of The Wombats 2015 hit “Greek Tragedy” has brought in a whole new group of fans from a new generation, with over 30 million streams on a platform that was not around when they first debuted Glitterbug in 2015. The Wombats have been revising what indie music can be since Proudly Presents… A Guide to Love, Loss & Depression (2007). Now as they prepare for their new album, each single shows us that the band still have the electricity that they first brought with them as a new band.

Following the announcement of their headlining European tour in May 2022, indie hitmakers The Wombats release “Ready For The High”. This is the latest single from, their fifth studio album, Fix Yourself, Not The World- due to release on 7th January 2022. An album made in the deep of lockdown over zoom.

The track comes after the singles “Method to the Madness” and “If You Ever Leave, I’m Coming with You”, some of their best quality 7-inches to date. The track comes with a video of the band playing the song, which captured the excitement of their famous live shows; like their recent appearance at Reading and Leeds and Neighbourhood Weekender. Frontman Matthew “Murph” Murphy had this to say: ‘’Ready for the High’ is a 90’s inspired track that I was excited to toss a load of trumpets into. The song is about being engulfed in a bad place, but rather than accepting this as immutable, acknowledging that it is only temporary and that better times are closer than they (currently) appear.”.

The Wombats has already given us the single “If You Ever Leave, I’m Coming With You”, which gives us a glimpse of the ever-improving dynamic of the Wombat’s style. Accompanying this is the track “Method to the Madness”, which helped to build up a profile of excitement for the upcoming release. Met with the challenge of recording remotely, Wombats have not been stopped in creating something forward-thinking and captivating.“It was pure madness, to be honest,” explained Matthew Murphy. Working with Jacknife Lee, Gabe Simon, Paul Meaney, and Mark Crew, to mix together one of the most anticipated records of 2022.
