Earlier this month, Radiohead chose to commemorate the 21st birthday of one of their most puzzled over albums to date, 2000’s Kid A, by releasing Kid A Mnesia, a box set that also piles in Kid A’s sibling album Amnesiac which was released just the next year, and features a handful of songs and mixes that didn’t quite make the cut for Kid A. The songs on Amnesiac, however, did have the chops to stand up as an album by themselves, but to round the set out, the band also added a 3rd disc of bits-and-bobs that didn’t quite make the cut for either of the records like recent single “Follow Me Around”. See the video, starring Guy Pierce, below.

The resulting 3LP, £80, 33 song unit is what we know as Kid A Mnesia. Thom Yorke and co. clearly don’t believe they’ve taken the merchandising for this project they released 21 years ago far enough though because the band have now opened the Kid A Mnesia Exhibition. As a part of this, you can visit the band’s virtual exhibition on your PS5 or PC, or just bag yourself a whole host of memorabilia, everything from badges and pins to teapots.

Upon the opening of the Kid A Mnesia gift shop, the band continue their trademark despondency with this message to fans, “Another year has passed and yet another awaits us, lurking with uncertain intent behind the deceptive glamour of the festive season. 2021 was certainly what veterans of past times might refer to as a ‘mixed bag'; turgid with inconsistency and tumescent with uncertainty. If one thing is for sure, it’s that 2022 is going to be no less disquieting. But how best to cope with these coming days of inconsistently disquieting uncertainty? Well, luckily, we at W.A.S.T.E. products have just the thing: why not take the time to browse through the KID A MNESIA EXHIBITION GIFT SHOP?”

Outside of the usual merch everyone seems to offer; t-shirts, stickers, pins, badges, blah blah blah… we also get the slightly less common (but still reasonably boring); jigsaws, water bottles, and notebooks… very nice. But the big guns, the £185 china tea sets, blinky the bear dressing gowns, and matching bed clothes… that’s what we’re after. Artist in residence Stanley Donwood has been working a lot in regard to this reissue, taking the albums art to galleries around London and also releasing a companion book “Fear Stalks the Land”. See below for further details on Donwood’s work.

As of November 5th, Radiohead has released their new triple album Kid A Mnesia, which compiles their classic albums Kid A and Amnesiac, along with a third disc of B-side material from the recording sessions of both of those aforementioned records. The album was originally announced back in September.

Kid A Mnesia was released via XL Recordings to wide critical acclaim, with NME’s Andrew Trendell saying that the third disc “feels like as much a complete album as you could hope for.” The band have physical copies of the album available, including black vinyl, cassette, and CD. In addition, a 360-page book that compiles artwork from the Kid A and Amnesiac eras by Stanley Donwood and Radiohead’s own Thom Yorke has been released alongside the album. All of these can be found on the band’s website.

Radiohead released two singles from the third disc ahead of the album’s release; “Follow Me Around” and “If You Say The Word”. “Follow Me Around” has been performed live a number of times over the years before its official release. Also, there is a high-quality soundcheck performance of the song on Radiohead’s 1998 film Meeting People Is Easy. The song is stripped down, consisting solely of an acoustic guitar and Thom Yorke’s voice, whereas “If You Say The Word” is more in stride with the sound of Kid A, featuring a melancholic finger-picked guitar accompanied by eerie background synthesiser sounds and a trudging drum beat.

In addition to the release of the album, Radiohead has also collaborated with Epic Games to create an interactive experience entitled Kid A Mnesia Exhibition. The release date coincided with the album’s release, and it is available on PlayStation 5, macOS and Windows. The “game” of sorts is described by Epic Games as being an “upside down digital/analogue universe” featuring artwork by Stanley Donwood and Thom Yorke, and sound design by Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich.

Kid A Mnesia is available on all streaming services and can also be purchased on Bandcamp. The tracklist of the third disc, which features previously unheard and unreleased material, is listed down below.

Side 1

“Like Spinning Plates” (‘why Us?’ Version)
“Untitled V1”
“Fog” (Again Again Version)
“If You Say The Word”
“Follow Me Around”

Side 2
“Pulk/Pull” (True Love Waits Version)
“Untitled V2”
“The Morning Bell” (In The Dark Version)
“Pyramid Strings”
“Alt. Fast Track”
“How To Disappear Into Strings”

Radiohead have released the studio version of a fan favourite song from the OK Computer-era, entitled “Follow Me Around”. The song has been performed live a number of times, and a high-quality live recording of the song can be found on the band’s 1998 film Meeting People Is Easy. The song is a part of Radiohead’s upcoming Kid A Mnesia album, which was announced back in September.

The song itself is very stripped back and certainly inhabits the same musical vein as many of the songs on OK Computer, with the entire track consisting of no more than a moody acoustic guitar and Thom Yorke’s vocals. In addition to “Follow Me Around”, Radiohead also recently released a previously unheard track entitled “If You Say The Word”, an atmospheric, hypnotic slow burner.

This song will also be featured on the upcoming Kid A Mnesia record, which will be released on November 5th by XL Recordings. Kid A Mnesia will be a triple album, and is being released for the 21st anniversary of both Kid A and Amnesiac. The album will feature both Kid A and Amnesiac in their entirety, along with a third disc of unreleased material from those same recording sessions. The band have released music videos for both of these singles, which can be viewed at the Youtube links below, or on the band’s YouTube channel.

In other recent news regarding Radiohead, Jonny Greenwood has recently shared music from his score to Pablo Larrain’s Spencer, which stars Kristen Stewart as the late Princess Diana. The full score will be released on November 12th via Mercury KX. You can read more about this here. Furthermore, and in light of Kid A’s 21st anniversary, Thom Yorke recently spoke to NME regarding the album, sharing the fact that he faced writer’s block during the writing process.

Yorke said of his bout with writer’s block; “We finished touring and I was sort of trapped in my own particular labyrinth, followed by this weird sort of [inner] monologue, a criticism of everything I did… it came from being sort of propelled into this weird state where people were projecting things onto me in a particular way. I didn’t have the right sort of support mechanisms to deal with it, so I internalised a lot of it.”

Kid A Mnesia will be released on numerous different vinyl variants, and in addition, two books by Thom Yorke and Stanley Donwood that contain visual art conceived around the Kid A/Amnesiac era will be released on November 4th. You can pre-order the album here, and the track list for the third CD on Kid A Mnesia can be viewed below.

Side 1
“Like Spinning Plates” (‘why Us?’ Version)
“Untitled V1”
“Fog” (Again Again Version)
“If You Say The Word”
“Follow Me Around”

Side 2
“Pulk/Pull” (True Love Waits Version)
“Untitled V2”
“The Morning Bell” (In The Dark Version)
“Pyramid Strings”
“Alt. Fast Track”
