In May it was announced that a one-off event was being planned to replace the annual 5-day festival which Glastonbury normally held. The replacement event was due to take place in September of this year but was unfortunately terminated.
The September live music event was to be organised to replace the last two cancellations of the Festival due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions enforced due to the current health crisis. The September concert was to be called Equinox, the event organisers had a lot of ‘red tape’ to go through and eventually secured the necessary licenses and permissions from Mendip District Council to allow for 50,000 ticket holders to attend the autumn event. The event appeared to be approved albeit with over 50 conditions and provisions, the festival’s organisers and the team have not yet provided further details on the cancellation. The Instagram post from Emily Eavis is the main cancellation confirmation at this time.

This is not the first cancellation in which Glastonbury has issued, the cancellation of the rescheduled 2020 festival was announced by the Eavis’ in January. The announcement confirmed the event would not be going ahead and gave information on how ticket holders could attend next year’s event. The Festival released the following statement via their Twitter page. “With great regret, we must announce that this year’s Glastonbury Festival will not take place, and that this will be another enforced fallow year for us. In spite of our efforts to move heaven & earth, it has become clear that we simply will not be able to make the festival happen this year. We are so sorry to let you all down. As with last year, we would like to offer all those who secured a ticket in October 2019 the opportunity to roll their £50 deposit over to next year, and guarantee the chance to buy a ticket for Glastonbury 2022. We are very appreciative of the faith and trust placed in us by those of you with deposits, and we are very confident we can deliver something really special for us all in 2022! We thank you for the incredible continued support and let’s look forward to better times ahead. With love, Michael & Emily.”

The 2020 event would have been the 50th birthday of Glastonbury, both organisers were not deturbed in their celebrations however and wanted to still proceed with an anniversary event. Michael Eavis was keen to hold the event this autumn to match the Festival’s birthdate of its first event on 18th September 1970, Eavis previously confirmed his hopeful plans for the eventually cancelled event. “I would like to do something in September. I would like to do something smaller somewhere around the anniversary date of when we started, which was the 18th of September 1970. I would like to consider possibly doing something around that time.” Eavis was then asked if he would recruit big acts to perform, to which he replied. “Yes, but I do need to get reassurance from the ethics people.”

Glastonbury is one of the most iconic institutions in music history, the festival has been leading the way in live entertainment and legendary live performances for over half a century. It is no surprise that the festival’s founder Eavis wanted to celebrate its 50th birthday with a bang.
The festival has seen line-up’s full of rock, soul, folk and pop performers, known for its inclusivity the festival has catered for every niche market and genre throughout the decades. The festival’s first event was held the day after Jimi Hendrix’s tragic death, some may think that it was this tragedy that inspired Eavis to launch the new festival, but his inspiration came from a Blues Festival held at the Bath and West Showground. The initial event’s attendance is not even half of the 250,000 attendees at 2019’s event, in 1970 the attendance was 1,500 ticket-holders who paid £1 to attend the festival. Along with the attendance at the festival, the £1 ticket also entitled the holder to free milk from the farm. Considering that the concert was the festival’s first event the line-up was an impressive who’s who of the era’s popular music, the line-up included T-Rex frontman Marc Bolan, Stackrudge, Quintessence, Keith Christmas and Scottish folk musician Al Stewart.

Whilst the festival’s annual Glastonbury event and proposed September concert are no longer going ahead, music and culture fans will still be able to have a Glastonbury-like experience. During the cancellations of the farm’s events, Michael and Emily Eavis have concentrated on another side of their business. The duo has opened up the famed event location, Worthy Farm, as a campsite open to the public. The new business venture is called Worthy Pastures and allows visitors to connect with one of music’s most iconic venue locations. Entertainment and activities provided to guests include the Pyramid Field, a SUNDAY Craft Market, Walking Routes, Cycling Paths, Table Tennis and the stone circle.

Waving the UK flag from the virtual headline slot are Milton Keynes grime metal outfit Hacktivist that recently announced new material in production and a killer collaboration with Dropout Kings coming out in December, and might perform some fresh music next Friday. Joining them for Pulse of the Maggots Festival are Newcastle metalcore 4-piece October Ends fresh off releasing their debut album Zodiac on 30 October, Wargasm UK who recently dropped the shocking video ‘Backyard Bastards‘, and rising Liverpool nu metal/hardcore band Death Blooms.

On the international front, Pennsylvania quartet Tallah are sure to bring the heat up with their raw mix of energetic nu metal and relentless contemporary metalcore. One of the more curious acts on the bill are Vended, formed by the sons of Slipknot’s Corey Taylor and Shawn Crahan, and set to carry on the legacy of their fathers. The list goes on with PRXJEK (USA), Cerberus (Mexico), Orbit Culture (Sweden), dEMOTIONAL (Sweden), Year Of the Knife (USA), Introtyl (Mexico), Diamond Construct (Australia), VCTMS (USA), Death Tour (USA), Thrown Into Exile (USA), Once Awake (Norway), 156/Silence (USA), and I Revolt (Finland).

The original Knotfest was created in 2012 by SlipKnot for two exclusive shows in Iowa and Wisonsin, USA for a unique horror circus and dark carnival experience in celebration of their music and the relevant bands of the day. The inaugural event saw Deftones, Serj Tankian, Machine Head, Lamb of God, Gojira, Dillinger Escape Plan and Cannibal Corpse join forces with SlipKnot and establish the iconic festival that would later expand to Japan, Mexico, Colombia, France and Canada, and was expected to also hit the UK this summer but was cancelled due to the pandemic.

The new virtual festival for fresh metal music bands Pulse of the Maggots takes its name from the track off SlipKnot’s third studio record Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) from 2004. The song has become an anthem for the band’s fans and is a fitting title for a festival set to showcase the raw talent of young metal acts from across the world. Tune in next Friday 13 November via Knotfest.com to take part of what would probably be the largest virtual festival of 2020.

Good news for all the festival fans out there! Despite all the big events like Glastonbury or Reading and Leeds being cancelled, you still get your chance at experiencing the festival summer that we all thought we had to miss out on. It might be a bit shorter than usual, with only one festival taking place, but the Red Rooster Festival in Suffolk is planning on making your 2020 festival experience worth it in September.

Of course, the social distancing rules have to be kept in mind, but with the UK government’s announcement last week saying that outdoor performances can take place, providing they have a “limited and socially distanced audience”, festival organisers have decided to keep going.

The festival will take place over the span of three days, starting on September 4 and ending on September 6, at the Euston Hall in Suffolk. It will be limited to a capacity of 5.000, with only three outdoor stages to follow social distancing measures. Red Rooster Festival is focussing on genres like soul, rock’n’roll, blues, soul, country music and cajun.

“We are working closely with our Health & Safety and Production teams to produce something that is truly magical without losing the spirit and atmosphere of our beautiful little festival”, James Brennan, the festival director and production manager, said.

Despite social distancing rules, the visitors will even be able to camp out on the festival grounds: “Over 60% of our audience stay in family group campervans which hugely helps us contain camping areas safely, plus by moving to outdoor stages only, we feel we can offer a safe environment in which to enjoy the festival.”

“Over the next few weeks, we will be putting together stringent new plans and providing detailed information to ensure the safety of our audience, artists and crew, which is of course of paramount importance.”

The line-up is yet to be announced. For more information, check out the festival’s website here.

Slipknot posted on their online platforms to inform fans on Wednesday 13th May, with a statement reading “Unfortunately Slipknot’s summer 2020 touring, including the North American Knotfest Roadshow, Knotfest UK and Knotfest at Sea, will not be happening.” The announcement was expected by ticket-holders given the current circumstances regarding Covid-19.

The post continues, “The band looks forward to performing for its fans again, and will do so when everyone’s safety can be assured.” It finished with information about ticket refunds, for which fans will receive an email from their point of purchase soon.

Knotfest was created by Slipknot in 2012 and has been held in numerous countries including the United States, Japan, and Mexico. 2020 was to be the festival’s first year in the UK, held at The National Bowl in Milton Keynes on 22nd August. Although the full lineup had not yet been announced, previous years have seen the likes of Deftones, Lamb of God, and Machine Head take to the stage.

#KnotfestUK is coming to The National Bowl in Milton Keynes for the first time ever on 22 August featuring @Slipknot and more to be announced. Tickets are on-sale NOW: https://t.co/URIo5RXrct pic.twitter.com/XgLTzSYxjY

‘We Are Not Your Kind’ is the band’s sixth studio album, released in 2019, and was the reason behind this year’s tour. There was even a 20-minute short film made in promotion of both the album and tour, directed by percussionist and backing vocalist Shawn Crahan, stage name CLOWN. The album went number 1 in the UK as well as the US, Australia, and more.

Fortunately, both Knotfest Japan and Knotfest At Sea have been rescheduled for later dates – Japan’s shows will now take place in January 2021, while the latter is yet to be announced. Frontman Corey Taylor discussed the current situation of live music with NME, saying that future shows will likely be in smaller venues as there may be “a sense of paranoia for a while” around attending large gatherings or events.

The Covid-19 outbreak has caused many disruptions in the music industry as well as cancellations of gigs and festivals. Yesterday, Monday 23rd March, brought news that Brighton’s The Great Escape Festival has been called off.

The event was due to run from 13th-16th May in 2020, and the line-up was full of many talented artists including Hayley Williams, Gang Of Youths, and Aitch as the Spotlight act. This was to be the festival’s 15th year running, but was sadly cancelled due to coronavirus concerns. Event organisers posted a statement to the official website and social media, explaining the situation to ticket-holders. The post read “We are very sorry to have to say that The Great Escape 2020 will no longer be taking place this year. We’ve not taken this decision lightly.”

Important information regarding TGE20 pic.twitter.com/9UrtMp02I3

They went on to offer fans help with obtaining a refund, saying that they should receive it from the ticket retailer or record store from which they purchased tickets. Alternatively, ticket-holders can carry it over to next year, when the festival will restart on 12th-15th May 2021.

Fans were saddened by the news, but supported the decision to maintain everyone’s safety. Some asked whether artists from this year’s line-up would perform next year instead, to which The Great Escape replied “We will have a new line up for TGE 2021.”

Since the festival began in 2006, previous years have seen the likes of Foals, Sam Fender, and Lewis Capaldi. The Great Escape is an incredible platform for upcoming artists and an opportunity to connect with fans, marketing itself as “the festival for new music”.

Festival organisers had previously shared their concern regarding the virus with an official statement that read “At this time, all shows and events are going ahead as planned. Please be assured that the safety and health of all staff and visitors is our main priority and we are implementing recommendations and instructions appropriately.”

It went on to say “We are closely monitoring official guidance from the World Health Organisation, Public Health England, UK Government, local public health authorities and are working with event promoters and organisers as information evolves.”

The cancellation follows many others, including Glastonbury, Snowbombing, and Radio 1’s Big Weekend. Artists have had to call off or postpone tours, such as Stormzy, Lana Del Rey, and The Who, to name a few. In place of live gigs, some artists have been using social media to live-stream at-home concerts in the hopes of uniting people in this uncertain time. Fans can also watch a celebration of Glastonbury on BBC.

The line-up included acts such as Liam Gallagher, Chase & Status, Rudimental, and Foals.

Snowbombing is a festival held at a ski resort in the Alps of Mayrhofen, Austria – this year the dates were set to be 13th-18th April. Attendees can enjoy music, parties, spas, food, drink and, of course, winter sports activities. This year was set to be the 21st Snowbombing festival and tickets had sold out. Check out the video of last year’s festival below.

The organisers announced the cancellation yesterday, 11th March, making a statement on Twitter. A spokesperson said “Following discussions with the Austrian authorities, it is with a heavy heart that we have to announce the cancellation of Snowbombing 2020.”

An announcement was also made on the official website, which explained the reasoning: “Today, the Austrian authorities placed a ban on all outdoor events above 500 people and indoor events above 100. This ban is in place from now until April 3rd and is likely to be extended.” The cancellation and ban are in place to protect the well-being of guests, artists, and crew.

Ticket holders were offered multiple options upon the announcement. Firstly, they may be issued a full refund. Secondly, those with packages can opt to keep their holiday in Mayrhofen and receive a £150 refund for the ticket only. Finally, they can transfer their ticket to use in 2021.

Some performers took to social media to let fans know and to share their feelings. Liam Gallagher wrote on Twitter “Gutted to have to cancel these gigs but as you know safety first“. He also asked fans to “stay safe“.

First Abu Dhabi now snowbombing whatever next gutted to have to cancel these gigs but as you know safety first fingers crossed we’ll have a cure for this thing soon and we can get back to the RnR stay safe stay young wash your hands and scrub yer toes LG x

This is not the only festival not going ahead this year due to the coronavirus – SXSW, Ultra Music Festival, and America’s biggest festival of the year, Coachella have all been postponed or cancelled, along with many artists’ tours. Stormzy is just one of these artists, cancelling his shows in Asia back in February. We hope that the issue can be resolved as soon as possible, and the music scene can continue as normal.
