The singer has been performing at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London for the past week and included her cover of The Beatles 1968 classic ‘Blackbird’ to her setlist. The cover was a part of her most recent album ‘Cowboy Carter’ which was acclaimed upon release in 2024 and won Grammys for Best Duo/Country Group Performance, Best Country Album and Album of the Year.”.

Beyoncé took to Instagram to post a snapshot of herself wearing a Blackbird themed outfit designed by Paul’s very own fashion designer daughter Stella McCartney and said: “Thank you, Sir Paul McCartney, for writing one of the best songs ever made. Every time I sing it I feel so honoured. And it is a full circle moment to wear your beautiful daughter’s design. Thank you, London, for creating unforgettable memories for me and my family. Holla at ‘ya when I come on tour again! (sic)”

Sir Paul MCartney sang the praises of the singer, saying her rendition of the song was a “killer version”. Also taking to Instagram back in 2024, he wrote the following words:  “I am so happy with @beyonce’s version of my song ‘Blackbird’. I think she does a magnificent version of it and it reinforces the civil rights message that inspired me to write the song in the first place. I think Beyoncé has done a fab version and would urge anyone who has not heard it yet to check it out. You are going to love it! I spoke to her on FaceTime and she thanked me for writing it and letting her do it. I told her the pleasure was all mine and I thought she had done a killer version of the song. When I saw the footage on the television in the early 60s of the black girls being turned away from school, I found it shocking and I can’t believe that still in these days there are places where this kind of thing is happening right now. Anything my song and Beyoncé’s fabulous version can do to ease racial tension would be a great thing and makes me very proud.”

Speaking on Strummer and the posted performance, Vedder stated, “I just think that what Joe did with the Mescaleros and those records, those songs and those words, it was a very communal sound, I think when you have a communal sound, the listener feels like they can be part of that community. I can only imagine that he facilitated thousands and thousands of connections.”

Joe Strummer first rose to fame as the co-founder, singer and guitarist of The Clash, the group was formed in the late 70s and soon became a beacon within the era’s rising punk movement. Soon after their formation, The Clash created a key part of music and cultural history, the band’s third studio album London Calling was released in 1979. The album’s lead single “London Calling” soon became a staple of the genre and would go on to define an era and generation.

After Strummer disbanded the band in 1986 he embarked on the next chapter of his career, the talented artist then began his work in film soundtracks and began to release solo material. One of Strummer’s first forays into film music was in 1986 within the film Sid and Nancy, the film charted the chaotic relationship between Nancy Spungen and Sid Vicious from fellow UK punk outfit The Sex Pistols. During the ’90s, Strummer formed his own personal supergroup, The Mescaleros would go onto release three studio albums including “Long Shaddow’s” partner album Streetcore.

The album was released on 21st October 2003 via Hellcat, an independent record label based in California’s Los Angeles. The album was posthumously released after the tragic passing of Strummer in December 2002 and was received with great applause. At its time of release, Mojo magazine stated that “Streetcore is an amalgam of all that made Joe Strummer, the musician and the man, so great.”

Last month it was announced that a new box set would be released, Joe Strummer: 002: The Mescaleros Years is set to drop on 16th September 2022. The collection will feature songs by Strummer and The Mescaleros, the box set will mark the first-ever release of an anthology take from group’s entire discography.

Strummer’s widow Lucinda Tait was the executive producer of the upcoming collection and has given the following statement, “There’s so much great music that Joe left us in his archive. To focus on Joe’s work with The Mescaleros was the natural second step on ‘002’ because those songs he made with them just seemed to resonate so strongly and reinvigorated his connection with his audience at a level he hadn’t experienced since his days with The Clash.”

The email sent by Bush read, “Dear Brisbane Pub Choir. I’ve been so busy that I’ve only just had the chance to watch you all singing ‘RUTH’. It’s utterly, utterly wonderful! I love it so much! Thank you everyone. You sing it really beautifully. I’m incredibly touched by your warmth and all your smiling faces. Thank you!” The iconic singer concluded the message with a warm ending, “With lots of love, Kate.”

Astrid Jorgensen, the founder and director of Pub Choir spoke with The Guardian concerning the email, “My manager called me and said, you’ve got to get home, Kate Bush has emailed. I ran straight back – I was literally running up that hill.” Jorgensen continued to discuss the email, “It is so wild, She is the biggest artist in the world right now, so to have her say she was moved by our performance, yeah, that is a peak.”

Jorgensen also spoke with The Guardian concerning the process taken to request the licence to cover the song, “the response we got back was pretty much, ‘Good luck – we’ll ask, but maybe plan for a different song.” The permission to use the song was sent ten days before the performance, regarding Bush’s initial approval Jorgensen stated, “Even that was a massive deal, the idea that she approved.”

Bush has recently discussed the relationship she holds with her back catalogue, the singer revealed that before its newfound fame she had not listened to “Running Up That Hill” for some time. The “Wuthering Heights” singer also disclosed that she does not revisit her previous releases unless she is required to make edits and revisions to configure the music with different formats.

Whilst appearing on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, Bush spoke with Emma Barnett concerning her historic discography, “I never listen to my old stuff. But then you know, when things like this come along, I’m normally involved in something like you know, maybe doing an edit or revisiting the track for some kind of other reason, I’m working on it. So yeah, I hadn’t heard it for a really long time.“

Originally birthed in Pakistan, Coke Studio was set up in 2008 to provide an international platform for both emerging and established artists. Now on its fourteenth season, the studio recorded sessions have included a myriad of musical genres whilst promoting multiculturalism. To expand the programme to a global scale, Coca-Cola has partnered with Universal Music to broaden and develop the studio’s programme to help emerging talent.

The powerful short pays homage to the legacy of Queen’s 1986 single and aims to showcase themes associated with Real Magic, Coca-Cola’s new brand that expresses philosophical ideas of creativity and unison.

Burke continued to discuss the new documentary short “We see ‘The Conductor’ as both a homage to the legendary Queen and an opportunity to refresh and reinterpret one of their greatest tracks in different ways across cultures and musical genres, for a new generation. There’s magic in that too.”

The duo were accompanied by both horn and woodwind sections, alongside Holland on the piano. Their arrangement builds slowly, with Sheeran gently strumming away alongside a tenderly played piano line by Holland, singing the familiar opening lines: “On Raglan Road on an autumn day I saw her first and knew, that her dark hair would weave a snare that I might one day rue”.  Gradually, the sound of the backing band creeps in, introducing a longing Gaelic melody as Crookes begins to sing: “On Grafton Street in November we tripped lightly along the ledge, of the deep ravine where can be seen the worth of passion’s pledge”.

Around the two-minute mark, the song begins to take flight, with the rest of the backing band joining in. Crookes and Sheeran hum along, giving the spotlight to the jubilant melody played by the band, before rounding out the song with the final verse.

In other news regarding Ed Sheeran, the singer-songwriter had a very busy 2021, releasing his fifth studio album = on the 29^th of October, with the album having now spent two weeks total at the number one spot within the UK album charts. You can read more about this here. Moreover, Sheeran collaborated with legendary British singer-songwriter Elton John on a Christmas tune entitled “Merry Christmas”.

Joy Crookes has also had a big year, releasing her first album Skin on the 15^th of October following some successful singles, such as “Feet Don’t Fail Me Now” which served as the lead single from the record, title track “Skin”, “When You Were Mine” and “Trouble”.

The singer-songwriter’s debut was praised highly, with NME saying in a four-star review of the album: “ ‘Skin’ rises from the most intimate pockets of Crookes’s life: the emotional turmoil around growing up, heartbreak, forgiveness, and relationships that don’t offer the sanctuary they promise. But here, she allows herself to revel in her own possibility of healing, singing directly about her past and who she wants to become, letting her formidable voice guide the way: cool, curious, full of momentum.”

The boyband’s cover of the Christmas hit has coincided with this year’s festive period. Meaning, the group’s new release may be in the running for this year’s Christmas number one. Scoring a festive hit would be a triumphant return for the group who have reunited after a seven-year hiatus.

The band disbanded in 2014 and consists of members Max George, Tom Parker, Nathan Sykes, Jay McGuiness and Sive Kaneswaran. The group formed through a series of auditions which saw over 1,000 singers participate. The process took over nine months to cement the group and the winning members were signed to Geffen Records. Their debut album, The Wanted, was released on 22nd October 2010 and included their first number-one single “All Time Low”. Last year marked the group’s tenth anniversary, unfortunately, due to COVID-19 the celebrations were cancelled.

The original track was released on 21st November 1994 by East 17 via the record label London. East 17 were key players within the 90’s boyband movement which preceded the genre’s resurgence within the 00’s, which spawned such groups as The Wanted. The original release of the track became the Christmas number one for 1994 and was the group’s only number-one single. The single competed in a now-famous chart battle with the festive anthem “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by the Queen of Christmas Mariah Carey. Both were neck and neck in competition for the Christmas number-one single of 1994 but “Stay Another Day” won by outselling Carey’s beloved track.

The group’s festive cover has been released ahead of the band’s Greatest Hits album, set to be released on 12th November 2021. The upcoming collection is a compilation of the band’s most loved songs including such hits as “All Time Low”, “I Found You” and the 2012 megahit “Glad You Came”. Along with their back catalogue, the upcoming album also features the new track “Rule The World”. The single was released on 13th October 2021 and saw the band adopt a heavier dance sound. Also included within the upcoming album’s tracklist is the band’s Comic Relief Single “Gold Forever”, released in 2011 the track debuted at number three within the UK charts.

It has been reported that Parker’s health was one of the reasons which led to their reunion. Last Summer, the 33-year-old singer was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour. Since then, Parker has been raising money and awareness, he recently hosted a charity gig for Stand Up to Cancer. This week it was announced that Parker’s condition was improving and was now under control. In a press release, the singer spoke on the good news, “It feels amazing it is quite nice to be able to do something that is not related to treatment, it is like nothing has ever changed.”

The Wanted will be hitting the road later this month with a series of acoustic shows and Q&A sessions. The intimate tour will start on 12th November and will continue through the month with five more gigs, including two album signing dates. In 2022, the group will also be embarking on a 12 date headline tour across the UK.

Martin is not the only person that covered the r&b hit. In 2008 shirtless Ed Sheeran performed his version of the song. “Pony” only reached No.16 in UK Charts but found a new wave of fame after it was used in the 2015 movie “Magic Mike XXL“.
Earlier this week Coldplay alongside Ed Sheeran were announced to join the line-up for the Global Citizen Event Live. The line of events will take place in many cities around the world in a 24-ha broadcast on the 25th of September.
Coldplay will perform in the New York leg of the event that will also feature artists like Billie Eilish and Lizzo. “Each act performing will be taking part in a 24-hour historic musical event, the concerts will be aired over many broadcasted mediums including ABC, ABC News Live, BBC, FX, IHeartRadio, Hulu, YouTube, TIME, Twitter as well as many more social media and televised channels”. Last month the band announced their new album “Music Of The Spheres” that is due on 15th October via Parlophone. The upcoming twelve track album will be the band’s ninth release. It’s been produced by Sweedish pop guru Max Martin who has written or co-written 24 of  Billboard Hot 100 number-one songs, most of which he has also produced or co-produced, including Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” (2008), Maroon 5’s “One More Night” (2012), Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off“.

The cover was recorded for an Apple Music Home Session, a new idea launched by the digital music service last year. Within the session the band also promised to perform one of the group’s own songs, the group also performed the single ‘It Won’t Always Be Like This’, taken from their debut album ‘It Won’t Always Be Like This’. The original recording released by Billie Eilish was the singer’s third single to be taken from her forthcoming album ‘Happier Than Ever’ set to be released 30th July 2021 via Darkroom, a sub-label of Interscope records. Eilish rose to popularity in 2015 with the release of the debut track ‘Ocean Eyes’, which led to a meteoric rise through her first number-one single ‘Bad Guy’. Much like ‘Bad Guy’ and‘Ocean Eyes’, ‘Your Power’ was co-written with her brother Finneas O’Connor.

The cover sees the group provide a fresh approach to their version whilst projecting their popular Indie style onto the American singer’s recent single. The Inhaler’s reworking showcases lead singer and guitarist Elijah Hewson’s impressive vocal range and includes the conventional indie instrumentation of electric guitar, keyboards and percussion. The group’s version has been received well by fans, this is no surprise with the track’s atmospheric soundscape which perfectly reflects the lyrical theme and the powerful build up to an emotive ending.

The band which hails from Dublin consists of members, Robert Keating on bass, Josh Jenkinson on guitar, Ryan McMahon on drums and frontman and guitarist Elijah Hewson, son of music legend and philanthropist Bono.  In 2020 they were up and comers within the industry and were included within the top 5 of BBC’s Sound off…, a yearly survey from professionals and critics to establish the ones to watch. After forming in 2012, the group released their debut single which was self-released. ‘I Want You’ was released in 2017 and was included within a compilation album.

Five more singles were released before their first studio album was announced earlier this month through record label Polydor. The group’s debut album was revealed on on 9th July 2021 and reached number one within the UK Album charts this week. In support of their debut album the band also performed the same set from their Apply Music Home Session during a BBC Radio 1 session, the session was performed at Maida Vale Studios located in London and was aired on 14th July 2021 at 6 pm.

Within the broadcast the group spoke to Annie Mac regarding the cover and the process taken to achieve the results, Hewson described how it took “months of training” to accomplish the vocal register heard in the cover, commonly referred to as falsetto. This vocal technique is obtained by the artist singing notes in which is abnormal for a typical voice to reach. Hewson also confirmed the group’s reasoning for picking ‘You Power’ to cover. “We wanted to do something that was popular. I think [Eilish] is a really good inspiration for people who wanna get into the pop world, When you hear her songs, you really know that it comes from her heart. And I think the song has a great message. I think we did a good job, and hopefully she likes it and we didn’t butcher her song. It’s a great song.”

The group’s debut has given the members a lot to celebrate, the album reached number one within the UK charts with 18,000 chart sales. On 16th July 2021, it was announced that the group clinched the top spot, the band took to Instagram to thank their fans.

The group’s win also marked an important record, the release is the first album number one win from an Irish band in 13 years. The last Irish group to reach number one was the Script’s debut album released in 2008 entitled ‘The Script‘. The quartet’s debut also broke a record on its Vinyl sales, the album became the fasted selling debut album on wax for a group since 2001.

Fans will be able to hear the band’s debut and potentially their recent cover live later this year. The group will hit the road this September, starting their tour in Sheffield and finishing in December with four hometown shows in Dublin.

The West Yorkshire Indie rockers’ offering to the new series is a cover of ‘Finger- Nailed For You’, originally released by influential indie-pop outfit Comet Gain. The cover will feature on the compilation album entitled ‘Stars Rock Kill (Rock Stars)’, the collection is to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the historically significant record label Kill Rock Stars. The collection is already on sale with the current track listing of covers and buyers will be notified when new songs will be available to add to their collection.

The Independent label Kill Rock Stars was started in 1991 within the states of Washington and Oregon and was founded by musicians Slim Moon and Tinuviel Sampson. The label initially started as a project between the two so that they could release their friend’s music, the type of music in which the two friends wanted to hear. No particular genre has been assigned as the label’s focus but over the years the label became known for its release of punk music. The label began by releasing compilation albums showcasing the underground music from Olympia in Washington, one particular album featured the highly influential riot grrrl group Bikini Kill.

Comet Gain became an act which the label released, most notably their 7-inch ‘Mailorder Freaks Singles Club’, which was released by the label in September 1998. The band also featured on the label’s 2-disc compilation album ‘Fields and Streams’, with their single ‘Look At You Now, You’re Crying’, released in 2002. Before being represented by Kill Rock Stars, the group started in 1992 formed by singer and guitarist David Feck. The band took inspiration from many different genres but most notably took influence from northern soul and post-punk. The band has featured many different line-ups over the years but has continued to grow since its inception in the early 90s, with the most recent album ‘Fireraisers Forever!’ released in 2019.

Listening to Comet Gain’s material it is evident that the Cribs were inspired by the group, and in the following statement they describe the connection they felt to the band. The band’s statement also talks about the group’s link to Kill Rock Stars in the early days of their career. Within the statement provided the group also speak on their choice to cover their musical predecessors. “Comet Gain are one of the bands who have meant the most to us throughout our lives. From listening to them on cassette Walkman on rainy bus journeys to college as teens, all the way through to becoming a full-time touring band, their music has been a consistent companion for us and has somehow always provided the perfect soundtrack to every place and situation we found ourselves in, no matter how disparate. For years they made us believe that Croydon was the promised land, such was the power of their poetry. They just make you BELIEVE full stop. Incidentally, the primary motivation behind the first-ever Cribs recording back in 2001 was to make a demo for KRS as a submission for the ‘Fields and Streams’ compilation… but we got too nervous and never sent it in. So this is a 20-year dream come true.”

The Cribs recently announced their new UK tour dates, In March of this year the announcement confirmed their rescheduled dates for 2022. The tour will see the boys perform in support of their album ‘Night Network’ which was released on 20th November 2020. The band’s newest studio album was an independent project for the members as it was their first self-produced album and was also released under the band’s own record label, Sonic Blew.

The Perseverance rover was sent out to explore for signs for a shot of habitability on Mars, collect samples and even look for proof of past alien occupants, the mission started in July 2020 and Doncaster’s own Yungblud gained the honour of soundtracking the event after his performance of the cover at last months ‘A David Bowie Celebration: Just for one Day!’. The celebration allows fans to remember Bowie through their favourite artists in a live-streamed concert. To make the event even sweeter is that each ticket sale helped towards the charity Save the Children, a charity that was important to the legendary Ziggy Stardust. You can watch the performance in the video below, as well as the mission itself, with his emotional and charismatic performance any nay-sayer can applaud the young artist on his tribute to The Thin White Duke.

The 23-year-old songwriter and sometime soap actor, once appearing in an Emmerdale episode in 2015, has not just hit the headlines out of this world but has caused quite a stir here on earth since his 2017 debut single ‘King Charles’. The artist’s debut album ‘21st Century Liability’ released on 6th July 2018 went silver and included lead single ‘Medication’ which premiered on the Zane Lowe radio show with Apple Music and was named the day’s World record. Since his rise, Yungblud has released his second studio album ‘Weird!’ in 2020 and has promised his fans the third instalment this year.

Fans will know that this is not Yungblud’s first rodeo covering a track, earlier in the year he performed a cover of Olivia Rodrigo’s track ‘Driver’s License‘ on a radio session. And if his upcoming tour name, Life On Mars Tour, is anything to go by the cover of ‘Life on Mars?’ has truly imprinted on the star’s career. Like most young artists, Yungblud has checked Bowie as an inspiration and relates to Bowie’s famous alien alter ego which made him such a mysterious talent. Yungblud spoke to the BBC about his related sense of alienation, ‘“To be honest, all my life I have felt a bit like an alien. Not a lot of people got me, and it got me down when I was younger. I found Bowie and I Found Lady Gaga, and I found Oasis. I found these world-builders, and they literally helped me through. I felt like I belonged on a different planet.“

With such an out of this world playlist choice, who else to send to space then ‘The Man Who Fell To Earth’ himself, it is no mystery why a Bowie track was chosen. And with this type of travel that Ryanair cannot provide becoming more of a reality in our modern world, music fans can now look up at the sky for their favourite songs.
