Other notable acts performing at Green Man this year include prolific cult-heroes Osees, art-rock collective Black Country, New Road, alternative rock group Bar Italia, Scottish shoegaze heavyweights The Jesus and Mary Chain and singer-songwriter Arlo Parks. Also coming to the Brecon Beacons in August are New York alternative rock outfit Blonde Redhead, experimental rock favourites Fat White Family, Kate Stables’ Indie rock band This Is the Kit, jazz quintet Ezra Collective and exciting folk-punk newcomers The New Eves.

Set to return to Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, Wales, the festival is scheduled to run from 15-18 August 2024, and will, for these four days, be home to not only a fantastic variety of live music but also an array of other entertainment, including literature, film, science, theatre and comedy. The grounds are divided into ten areas to accommodate this, ensuring that festival-goers will never experience a dull moment.

Sleaford Mods, the highly influential post-punk/punk-rap duo comprised of vocalist Jason Williamson and DJ Andrew Fearn, will return to Green Man festival for the first time since 2017, and arrive now as a headline act following their incredible success in recent years.

Listen to “Jobseeker” by Sleaford Mods below:

Also headlining this year’s event, and also returning to Green Man as a headliner following a performance in a past year, is New York-based indie folk group Big Thief. Since playing the festival in 2019, Big Thief have added two critically acclaimed albums to their total of five, combining profound, masterful lyrics with incisive and blissful folk instrumentation in the process.

Listen to “Spud Infinity” by Big Thief below:

The third headliner is English musician and producer Jon Hopkins, who’s combining of electronic music with contemporary classical music, resulting in transcendent musical beauty, will sure to have a spellbinding effect come August. The last, but certainly not least, headliner comes in the form of neo soul and alternative R&B star Sampha, who will bring his unique musical prowess to the Brecon Beacons for all to witness.

Tickets are, unfortunately, now sold out, but you can sign up for resale tickets here.

The Mercury Prize Award ceremony and competition take place each year to celebrate British and Irish music. Each year, 12 albums are shortlisted to contend for the accolade; these albums are chosen from a range of genres and incorporate new and established artists. The list is then presented to a panel of judges consisting of industry professionals who proceed with the lengthy decision process. On the day of the ceremony the panel then meets again to choose the album of the year, and the winner is awarded the Mercury Music Prize which consists of a cash prize and a trophy. Most importantly, the winning artist receives the awareness, visibility, commercial success and professional respect which follow the confirmed win.

The following statement further describes the prize’s importance within popular music, “It is the music equivalent to the Booker Prize for literature and the Turner Prize for art. The main objectives of the Prize are to recognise and celebrate artistic achievement, provide a snapshot of the year in music and to help introduce new albums from a range of music genres to a wider audience.”

This year’s shortlisted twelve ‘Albums Of The Year’ will be confirmed on Thursday 28th July 2022, and updates concerning this year’s nominees can be found on social media channels. Music fans can also stay informed using the Mercury Prize’s new headline sponsor, FREE NOW, Europe’s leading Mobility Super App. The event’s existing partner Bowers & Wilkins will continue to act as the Mercury Prize’s official audio partner.

The Mercury Music Prize has been a signal of achievement and talent since its inception 30 years ago. The accolade and event were created in association with the British Phonographic Industry. The first event took place in 1992 and was originally produced to contend with the Brit Awards, the first Mercury Music Prize was awarded to Primal Scream for their third studio album Screamadelica.

Throughout the award’s long and storied history, the prize has been awarded to 29 different albums but only one artist has won twice. English singer-songwriter PJ Harvey famously won the Mercury Prize in 2001 for Stories From the City and again in 2011 for her eighth studio album Let England Shake. Many debut albums have been awarded the prize including An Awesome Wave by Alt-J and Psychodrama by Dave. Last year’s winner was also a debut album, Arlo Parks took home the 2021 Mercury Prize award for Collapsed In Sunbeams. The 21-year-old singer’s album was chosen from the 12 shortlisted albums. Other 2021 nominees included Mogwai’s As The Love Continues and Blue Weekend by Wolf Alice.

Coverage of the event will be provided by BBC Music, the long-time broadcast partner will document this year’s Mercury Music Prize via radio and television.

Singer-songwriter Arlo Parks (Anaïs Oluwatoyin Estelle Marinho) has released two tracks as part of the latest Spotify Singles series. The event means to celebrate artists nominated for the Grammy’s Best New Artist award. Typically consisting of one cover of a previous nominee, as well as a new version of one of the artist’s old songs, Parks has given her voice to Kaytranada’s 2016 track “You’re the One“.

The song originally appeared on the Haitian-Canadian producer’s album 99.9%, and featured vocals from LA singer-songwriter Syd. Parks said of the song that “Syd’s voice in ‘You’re the One’ always had this effortless beauty to it in my eyes and I wanted to cover it to expose the romance and yearning behind the lyrics.“

Recording in New York City’s Electric Lady Studios, Parks also re-recorded her recent track “Softly“, which was released only earlier this year. She said “It was an honour to be able to sing my new song ‘Softly’ too, to highlight the beginning of a new and beautiful chapter in my career and celebrate being nominated for Best New Artist.”

Parks can keep her fingers crossed for this year’s Grammys, having also been nominated for Best Alternative Music Album in celebration of her 2021 debut Collapsed in Sunbeams. The record did well enough for her last year, winning the Hyundai Mercury Prize for best album and being nominated for three awards at the 2021 BRITs (Album of the Year/Best New Artist/Best British Female Solo Artist). Fans weren’t too dismissive either, with it reaching no.3 on the UK Albums Chart.

And she’s not the only one celebrating recent successes. Finneas started off this year’s Spotify Singles series with a cover of the Bon Iver track “Flume“, as well as redoing his 2021 track “Medieval“. Some of the other artists nominated for Best New Artist include Baby Keem and Glass Animals. The awards will take place on April 3rd.

At the young age of 21, Parks has already enjoyed a number of impressive successes over the past few years. Having appeared on The Graham Norton Show and Later … with Jools Holland last year, as well as winning the Breakthrough Artist Award at the 2021 BRIT Awards, who only knows what she’s up to next.

I’m quietly confident that everyone that even almost has an association with music; whether that be a casual listener, a Billie Eilish super-fan, or just a freelance journalist writing your thoughts online – everyone in the UK woke up to the announcement of some pretty substantial names heading over to California’s own legendary Coachella Festival. Spread throughout the eclectic lineup we see a healthy serving of UK artists; including the festival’s first headliner since 2019 – Harry Styles. After 2 years of delays and cancellations, of course, due to COVID-19, this year’s lineup is due to be a special one, and with the festival going ahead in only 3 months set over 2 weekends in April – 15th to 17th, and 22nd to 24th. Fans are getting excited quickly.

As well as the one and only Harry Styles on Friday, Northampton punk-rapper Slowthai has joined the bill after the success of his 2021 output Tyron, Bristol’s beloved post-punk powerhouse IDLES, Space rock maestros Spiritualized will also see the crowds of Coachella shortly after the release of their new album. Other artists performing on both of the festivals Friday’s include; indie darling Phoebe Bridgers, Aussie psych-rock legends King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Lil Baby may show off some of his new collaborative album with Lil Durk The Voice of Our Heroes, the DJ tent will also see quite a lot of variety with early 2000s classics like The Avalanches appearing alongside the up and coming Logic1000.

Saturday’s headliner Billie Eilish is also joined by a host of acts from over the pond; Reading and Leeds Festival headliners Disclosure sit particularly high on the bill, synth-pop party Hot Chip come a little earlier, along with Floating Points (who recently made it into our top 10 UK albums of 2021 with Promises), Mercury Prize Winner Arlo Parks, and Rina Sawayama show off some of Britain’s best female artists at the moment, and black midi brings their own blend of post-punk-jazz-noise to the desert. Flume, Megan Thee Stallion and BROCKHAMPTON fill out the upper section of the lineup, while Freddie Gibbs and Madlib, and Japanese Breakfast turn up for anyone else wanting something different.

The artist formerly known as Kanye West (now simply labelled Ye) is set to headline the festivals final days with 1/3 of indie icons The xx playing in the form of idiosyncratic drummer/DJ Jamie xx, Fatboy Slim keeps up the beach vibes and beabadoobee brings a little indie ambience to an otherwise dance and hip hop heavy day, Duke Dumont brings the British club scene with him too. The bunch will be joined by Hip-hop duo Run the Jewels, Doja Cat, Maggie Rogers, and even Sweden’s own punk output Viagra Boys.

Ticket information can be found here.

Set for January 31st 2022, the 64th annual Grammy Awards have announced a comprehensive list of their nominations across the show’s 86 categories this year. As per every other year, this selection of nominees is not without its standouts; Olivia Rodrigo seems to be dominating with nominations in all 4 of the main categories, its controversies; with comedians Louis CK and Dave Chapelle both receiving dubious nods, and its snubs; see Miley Cyrus and Machine Gun Kelly be unnecessarily disappointed here.

This year’s more prestigious categories in the general field (best album, best new artist, record of the year and song of the year) see a lot of big names, none of which crop up more regularly than Olivia Rodrigo, who has been nominated for each with her viral sensation ‘drivers license’ from here 2021 album Sour. The usual suspects of Billie Eilish, Justin Bieber, H.E.R., Taylor Swift, and Kanye West also receive nods throughout the categories. Mercury Prize winner Arlo Parks and recent record breakers Glass Animals also get fitting mentions in the Best New Artist bracket.

The Album of The Year, and Best Rap Song categories also bring their fair share of controversy. Kanye West has been nominated for his effort on DONDA, released earlier this year. These days it’s seemingly impossible for Kanye to go through an album cycle without something landing in the headlines. This time, the spotlight has been placed on his expansive feature list. Specifically, the appearance of recently cancelled Marilyn Manson, who also has a nod for Best Rap Song on West’s track “Jail”. His position on the album has led to many questioning whether or not he should be involved in the award ceremony after being accused of sexual assault by multiple women. The academy’s CEO Mason Harvey Jr. said this about his inclusion, “We won’t look back at people’s history, we won’t look at their criminal record, we won’t look at anything other than the legality within our rules of, is this recording for this work-eligible based on date and other criteria,” he added. “If it is, they can submit for consideration.”.

Jay-Z makes history with this announcement, picking up 2 separate nominations in the Best Rap Song category. Featuring on “Jail” with Kanye West, and “Bath Salts” alongside DMX and Nas, takes the rappers total Grammy nominations up to a record-breaking 83. He surpassed Beatles legend Paul McCartney to take the title after he has only gained 81 nominations so far, renowned producer Quincy Jones sits in 3rd place with a meagre 80 Grammy nominations. Of the 83 nominations Jay-Z has bagged so far, he has won 23.

Many other oddities come from this year’s nominees. ABBA was nominated for the first time in their 48 year careers, BTS fans are shocked at the group’s singular mention despite the group themselves seeming incredibly grateful, and notice a distinct lack of British music on the list. Arlo Parks, Major Lazer, and Paul McCartney are basically the only Brits to land in any major categories. See all the nominations here.

Arlo Parks won the 2021 Hyundai Mercury Prize with her debut album Collapsed In Sunbeams on Thursday. The singer-songwriter, 21, fended off competition from artists including Wolf Alice, Celeste and Mogwai to win the £25,000 prize at a ceremony in Hammersmith, London

The album was released in January to much acclaim as critics praised its compassion and insight into topics like mental health and sexuality. Parks told the BBC she had written the album “about the things I was scared to talk about or the things that moved me” and composed the first song, “Eugene”, “sitting on the floor eating pasta” while she was still at school.

Parks performed “Too Good” at the event in London, with host Lauren Laverne revealing that Parks told her she used to cycle past the venue on her way to school. You can see her perform the track below.

When she received the reward the singer said “I am completely speechless. I don’t have the words. I just want to say a big thank you to my family. My mum and my dad are somewhere in the room today,”

Arlo Parks or Anais Oluwatoyin Estelle Marinho was born in west London to Nigerian and French-Chadian parents. She began writing to escape into a fantasy world, quickly establishing a style combining both emotional directness and rich sensory palate.

She draws much of her inspiration from artists like Elliott Smith, Jill Scott, Frank Ocean and Portishead and was only 17 when she began sending demos to the BBC. Success soon followed with trip-hoppy 2018 debut single “Cola”, which featured heavily in Michaela Coel’s BBC drama I May Destroy You which was written with producer Luca Buccellati and has been streamed over 23 million times on Spotify. You can see her excepting her prize here.

The Mercury Prize, is given to the best British or Irish album of the past 12 months and has been going for 30 years. Previous winners include records such as Primal Scream’s Screamadelica, Pulp’s Different Class and Dave’s Psychodrama.

Dorset’s near-decade and a half-running music festival End Of The Road have returned in (almost) full-force this year, having been cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Whilst the initially proposed line-up for 2021 suffered slightly, with the likes of indie rock greats Pixies and Bright Eyes, unfortunately, dropping out, the festival was still able to host an exciting roster of groups and artists, including big names such as Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz, Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood and King Krule.

The festival, which debuted in 2006, celebrated its slightly belated fifteenth anniversary this year, featuring an eclectic melting pot of artists during its four-day proceedings and re-introducing live music in a way that harkened back to the days of pre-pandemic frivolity. Being a more modestly sized festival than the likes of Reading & Leeds, End Of The Road has long since had a capacity of 15,000 people, which was indeed fulfilled this year according to NME.

The four days have proven to be a roaring success, as evidenced by EOTR’s Twitter feed, which has been ablaze with delighted fans since the festival began on September 2nd, proclaiming how good it was to be back at a music festival and sharing pictures of a range of live performances. The assorted line-up of the festival certainly seems to have provided something to suit everyone’s taste, from the hazy psychedelic atmospheres of Japanese band Kikagaku Moyo to the jazz-flavoured post-punk of Squid and the searing-hot rhymes of London rapper Little Simz.

The event’s website provides the following description for the Mercury Prize. “The Hyundai Mercury Prize promotes the best of UK and Irish music and the artists who produce it. This is done through the celebration of the 12 ‘Albums of the Year’, recognising artistic achievement across a range of contemporary music genres. It is the music equivalent to the Booker Prize for literature and the Turner Prize for art. The main objectives of the Prize are to recognise and celebrate artistic achievement, provide a snapshot of the year in music and to help introduce new albums from a range of music genres to a wider audience.”

The celebrated DJ and industry figure will take the stage at London’s Eventim Apollo on 9th September 2021 to hand the prestigious award to the winner of this year’s prize. The former BBC Radio 1 DJ will be joined by fellow BBC broadcaster Lauren Laverne who will be responsible for hosting this year’s event. Choosing one overall winner from these 12 outstanding albums will be a tough challenge for the judging team. I’m looking forward to announcing our decision at the Awards Show.”

There was an embarrassment of riches for this year’s Hyundai Mercury Prize judges to choose from, but the final twelve show how diverse, vibrant and far-reaching British music continues to be.
