Annie Macmanus, formerly known as the BBC’s Radio DJ Annie Mac, speaks out about what she refers to as a “tidal wave” of sexual abuse claims untold in the music industry.

Annie told the House of Commons committee that an alarming number of stories have yet to emerge. Her further comments on the music industry were that it was a “boys club” and “the system is kind of rigged against women.”

Author of the new book The Mess We’re In, Annie Mac, gave evidence to the committee at the House of Commons, where she told them of a young singer and a record producer who kept asking her not to go home, and “then when they go out in the street, he sexually assaulted her,” she said.

Musicians Union published survey evidence to UK Parliament in 2022, were the idea of the music sector being a “boys club” was reported in the latest stats. They MU published this statement, “Respondents to the MU 2022 snapshot survey commented on the lack of women in workplaces across the sector and a distinct lack of female role models and women in leadership positions. More than one participant commented “it’s a boys club”. This emerged as a main theme and one of the reasons why respondents felt that many cultures and working environments in the music industry are misogynistic by nature” “The 2020 UK Music Diversity Taskforce survey found that in there is an underrepresentation of women in senior positions within the sector. Women represent 40.4% of the sector at senior level. “

Musicians Union is the UK’s trade union for all musicians across the UK, working in all sectors of the music business. They help members negotiate with major employers in the industry and offer a range of support services for musicians; however, most are unaware of them.

Annie further comments, “There needs to be some sort of a shift in women feeling like they’re able to speak out without their careers being compromised.”

Further reports from the MU snapshot survey presented statistics on sexual harassment. At 48%, almost half of the 800 musicians surveyed reported sexual harassment; 58% said they had witnessed sexual harassment; 85% had experienced sexual harassment but did not report it; and 40% did not report it for fear of losing work.

Macmanus told the MP’s “That is that women, especially young women in the music industry, are consistently underestimated and undermined, and freelance women are consistently put in situations where they are unsafe.”

Findings by the Musician Union allegedly found that there were power imbalance’s between freelancers and the people who engage them. The common views of many members during the survey said “When a freelancer relies on an individual for work, they are less likely to speak out.”

Misogyny in the music industry, suggests it may spread further than just alleged claims of a sexual nature but to supposed pay gaps, mental health, a lack of access to professional training and development, and being passed over for promotions. These alleged claims come from Be The Change case study of sexual harassment in the music industry in 2023.

The UK Parliament Women and Equalities Committee launched its ‘Misogyny in Music’. This brought in evidence from the BBC, that last year only one in ten headliners were female at the UK’s top music festivals. It also has MP’s asking questions about the safety of female musicians at UK music festivals.

Annie Mac said she has not “experienced or witnessed any sexual misconduct firsthand.” and believes her 19 years working with the BBC provided her with a “shield of protection to talk about such issues.” but most concerning she added “The thing that worries me the most is the rapes that are going unreported. That’s what concerns me the most – the fact that women feel like they can’t speak up.”

Standon Calling has officially become the first major UK festival to have an over-50% female or non-binary line-up. Coming about after they signed up to the PRS Foundation’s Keychange initiative back in 2018, which sought to help balance the gender-gap in music festivals, Standon Calling has evidently followed through with it. This year, 54% of their line-up is reportedly female or non-binary identifying, a reported 9% increase from last year.

Other festivals who are committed to this goal include the Marsden Jazz Festival and True North Music’s Americana, Country and Roots festival. Some of the headlining artists this year include Anne-Marie, Self Esteem and Annie Mac. They’ve got all-female/non-binary line-ups for Friday and Sunday concerts in their Cowshead and Laundry Meadows venues, which is a first for Standon Calling.

Some of the other acts involved include India Jordan, Logic1000 and Elkka. Among the men playing at the festival are eighties ska-band Madness (who are the opening act on the first night) and UK hip-hop artist Loyle Carner. Scottish rock band Primal Scream will also be taking centre stage at some point.

Their efforts haven’t gone unnoticed either. Keychange Project Manager Francine Gorman had this to say: “Standon Calling are setting a great example to the global festival community …. By demonstrating that gender representative line ups can be achieved, and by giving under-represented artists their rightful space on a prominent festival stage, we hope that others will be encouraged to follow suit and to take positive action towards achieving gender equality throughout the music industry.”

The festival’s founder, Alex Trenchard, noted that “Our lineups are stronger and more diverse than ever. We’re delighted to be leading the way amongst the industry, showing that gender balance in festivals in 2022 is both possible and a key component of curating an exciting line up.”

In for its 16th year, Standon Calling seems stronger than ever. Despite starting out as a birthday barbecue for Trenchard, it’s come a long way since those humble beginnings. Happening in Hertfordshire by the village of Standon, it will take place on the weekend of July 21st – 24th. Attendees can look forward to a whole plethora of interesting activities, ranging from a swimming pool/hot-tub to a ‘Who Let the Dogs Out?’ fancy-dress parade, as well as a dog show, so there should be something for everyone whilst you’re there. Tickets are available here and include Thursday Day and Weekend Camping options.

The event’s website provides the following description for the Mercury Prize. “The Hyundai Mercury Prize promotes the best of UK and Irish music and the artists who produce it. This is done through the celebration of the 12 ‘Albums of the Year’, recognising artistic achievement across a range of contemporary music genres. It is the music equivalent to the Booker Prize for literature and the Turner Prize for art. The main objectives of the Prize are to recognise and celebrate artistic achievement, provide a snapshot of the year in music and to help introduce new albums from a range of music genres to a wider audience.”

The celebrated DJ and industry figure will take the stage at London’s Eventim Apollo on 9th September 2021 to hand the prestigious award to the winner of this year’s prize. The former BBC Radio 1 DJ will be joined by fellow BBC broadcaster Lauren Laverne who will be responsible for hosting this year’s event. Mac has spoken on her involvement within this year’s ceremony and expresses the hard decision to choose a winner from the shortlist full of high calibre albums. “This year’s Hyundai Mercury Prize shortlist highlights how remarkably creative and diverse British music is at the moment. Choosing one overall winner from these 12 outstanding albums will be a tough challenge for the judging team. I’m looking forward to announcing our decision at the Awards Show.”

Mac will also be joining the judging panel; the award’s panel are comprised of top industry experts and professionals as well as last year’s winner Michael Kiwanuka who won the Mercury prize for his third studio album Kiwanuka. Joining the singer-songwriter on the judging panel includes famed musician Jamie Cullum and three-time Mercury prize nominee Anna Calvi. Heading the judging panel is the head of Music at stations 6 Music and Radio 2, Jeff Smith who is also the chair of the judging committee. Also included within the respected list of music professionals is Broadcaster and DJ Danielle Perry, presenter and writer Gemma Cairney, Music consultant Mike Walsh, Lanterns on the Lake band-member Hazel Wilde, editorial director for Vice.com Tshepo Mokoena, creative director for Kerrang! and contributing editor of Mojo Phil Alexander and Will Hodgkinson, known as the top rock and pop critic for The Times.

The judges for this year’s event have provided the following statement concerning their involvement in the process. “It is testament to the strength of British music that, during a year which saw musicians face the toughest challenges of their lives, so many remarkable albums came out nonetheless. There was an embarrassment of riches for this year’s Hyundai Mercury Prize judges to choose from, but the final twelve show how diverse, vibrant and far-reaching British music continues to be. Choosing one winner out of twelve albums that bring so much hope for the future will be a challenge indeed.”

The single’s release was also accompanied by a thought-provoking music video, the video features special star guest and fellow producer, American singer-songwriter Finneas. The 23-year-old artist is the brother of recording artist Billie Eilish with whom he has collaborated musically. Musical talent clearly runs in the family as Finneas has won eight Grammy awards, including such awards as Producer of the Year and Album of the year. He also won an award for his work on his sister’s 2019 debut album entitled ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?’, for which he won the Non-classical award.

Blake has described the track’s meaning in the single’s press release, the singer relates the new track to finding his personal peace within his life and subsequent success, “The song is about finding peace with who you are and where you’re at regardless of how well other people seem to be doing. Comparison really is the thief of joy,” The song’s following lyrics also carry such themes with a tone of modesty, conveying a sense of tranquillity over the growing pressures of life. “I can find my way with no superpowers/ I can take my place without becoming sour/ I might not make those psychopaths proud/ At least I can see the faces of the smaller crowds,”

Along with the release of the singer’s new album’s lead single, Blake has also confirmed the release date of his new album. The artist’s fifth studio album entitled ‘Friends That Break Your Heart’ is set to be released on 10th September 2021. The album’s press release provides the following notes regarding the artwork, describing it as “a visual encapsulation of the emotions brought forth throughout the body of work,” The album’s artwork showcases the work of artist Miles Johnston, a UK artist known for his illustrations, predominately achieved using graphite and oils. The artist has taken to his Twitter to announce his excitement over his recent venture with Blake.

I’m so excited to finally share this! I was asked by one of my favorite musicians @jamesblake to design his album cover for the upcoming masterpiece “Friends that break your heart”.
Blake has also teamed up with other artists on the musical aspect of the new release. The album will feature further collaborations with other performers, including Monica Martin, SwaVay, JID and American singer-songwriter and Grammy-nominated artist SZA. The singer’s new release will follow up on his last studio album, ‘Assume Form’, released in 2019 via Polydor Records. The fourth studio album gained an impressive accolade for the artist, Blake was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album for the 2020 Grammy Awards and received both critical and commercial success for its release.

The multitalented artist is no stranger to Grammy nominations; the singer was nominated for Best New Artist in 2014, which was awarded to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. The singer’s debut album, ‘James Blake’ was released in 2011 to critical acclaim, siring three singles and two more released from the album’s deluxe edition. His debut release was also nominated for an award, the album gave Blake his first Mercury Prize nomination in 2011 and was also shortlisted for the Brit Award Critics Choice Award. Blake would go on to win a Mercury Prize when he was again nominated in 2013 for his second studio album ‘Overgrown’ released the same year.

Blake is set to go on tour this year in support of his new album, where the singer will perform in 15 different cities, the tours dates and locations have been announced by the artist. Unfortunately for UK fans, the tour will take place in North America, but with September around the corner, UK fans will not have to wait long to hear the artist’s new material.

Mac spoke to McMorrow and one-quarter of Rudimental, Piers Agget to discuss how the single came about. McMorrow stated that the track began from a song that he had written a few years ago. that he was “having one of those moments” and said, “Let’s make country music!” Later Rudimental heard the demo and was struck by its “relatability” of uncertainty during the early pandemic and decided to give it a dance twist. Mac commented that the song felt right during this time of optimism and hope.

The song begins with McMorrow’s original stripped-down vocals before the familiar Rudimental sound sweeps in, taking the track to the next level with an irresistibly danceable beat. The Irish singer-songwriter gushed about the collaboration on his official website:

“I f***ing love Rudimental, always have, I have this beautiful memory of seeing their show at Coachella in 2014 right after I’d played, and then driving up to San Francisco listening to their album Home the entire way. To me this song sounds and feels like that album, it’s exciting that we got to do this thing together.”

This is Rudimental’s first release this year following their December collaboration Be The One with MORGAN, TIKE, and drill rapper Digga D. McMorrow and Rudimental teased album releases later this year on Radio 1 with Mac. Both artists also expressed their excitement to get back to performing this summer.

DJ Annie Mac will host her own exclusive New Year’s Eve party tomorrow. Joining her is her husband, fellow DJ and ex-BBC Radio presenter Toodla T, live from their home “Rave Shed” where they played a full set earlier this year. The livestream will start at 10:30 pm GMT tomorrow across all their social media channels. The post from earlier today announced the online party as the “return to the Rave Shed“, saying goodbye to 2020 and greeting 2021 until at least 00:15.

Following the latest government announcement, London remains in Tier 4 and even more cities and counties are going under tougher restrictions, meaning millions of people this year will have to spend their New Year’s Evening at home, tuning in to various livestreams and online celebrations. Moreover, with widespread weather warnings and freezing temperatures expected in the following days, isolated home parties are currently trending as the preferred, and in the fact the only, choice to say goodbye to 2020.

Various DJs, musicians and media outlets are all hosting NYE celebration livestream from various points around the globe. Earlier today, Swedish pop icon Robyn announced she is hosting the exclusive radio show at BBC Radio 6 from 7pm tomorrow. Alternatively, YouTube Originals will broadcast a special stelar virtual show, featuring Aitch, AJ Tracey and Dua Lipa.

With well-established reputation certainly preceding both Annie Mac and Toodla T, their ‘Rave Shed’ NYE party sure sounds like a great option to wave a final goodbye to 2020 and meet the new year in style. In case a night of “classics and party bangers in [their] rave shed at the end of the garden” still isn’t convincing enough, the DJ family are officially supporting the Shelter Charity, donating “as much money as possible” to help people struggling with bad housing or homelessness.

It’s the return of the rave shed Myself and @AnnieMac will be djing classics and party bangers in our rave shed at the end of the garden this New Year’s Eve, 10.30pm sharp live stream.

Aside from building a widely acclaimed career as a club DJ, Annie Mac has been a BBC Radio 1 presenter since 2004. Few weeks ago, she shared the Hottest Record of the Year on her ‘Future Sounds’ show. Following a public vote, the most popular song of 2020 was revealed to be the surprising yet powerful collaboration between Bring Me The Horizon and Yungblud for ‘Obey‘. The electric track won against Rina Sawayama’s ‘Bad Friend‘ and IDLES’ ‘Model Village‘ that came the closest amongst the 20 track in the competition.

Alongside her busy personal and professional life as a mother, DJ, radio presenter and host of the podcast Changes, Annie Mac has recently announced her novel ‘Mother Mother‘ will be published soon in 2021 through Wildfire Books. Making the most of being locked down for third time, she has been spending more time writing, with the following personal excerpt shared last week just in time for Christmas.

Indie-rock singer Nilüfer Yanya shared her latest EP today, titled ‘Feeling Lucky?’, which follows her incredible 2019 debut album ‘Miss Universe’. With only three tracks, the EP is an insight into Yanya’s year.

Beginning with lead single ‘Crash‘, the collection is launched into distorted guitar and drums which clearly portray the song’s title, with the lyrics, “If you ask me one more question, I’m about to crash.” The track was produced by Nick Hakim and made an appearance on the Radio 1 show Future Sounds With Annie Mac as her Hottest Record in the World on the day of its release.

Speaking directly to Annie Mac on the radio show, Nanya discussed her writing process: “I started writing it last year and it was a pretty busy year for me. I was just touring a lot, playing lots of shows – I think I actually started writing it on the road which I don’t normally ever do, so that was a first.”

As a whole, ‘Feeling Lucky?’ explores themes of good, bad, and the unpredictability of both. Yanya said in a press release, “One of the songs had the theme of luck in it as a concept but then I realised they all do. That got me thinking about luck in general; good and bad.”

These themes are continued on ‘Same Damn Luck’, co-written by Will Archer, which sees the artists singing about a break up with some surprising comparisons to the current restrictions in the UK due to Covid-19. For example, “News, all bad news lately/Every single time that you called and said/”Girl, stay in, they all knew, they all knew/I told you, I told.” The music video for ‘Same Damn Luck’ was also released today to coincide with the EP.

According to a press release, the singer had this to say about the song: “I hadn’t quite escaped what I thought I previously had. A personal reminder in the form of a pop ballad that the past is never that far away and will regularly come back to haunt you.”

The last song of the EP is ‘Day 7.5093′, taking a groovy approach to the instrumental with a walking bass line and a chorus consisting entirely of the word “Yeah” sung repetitively in Yanya’s intriguing breathy voice. Its first appearance was in July when it was performed live on NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (Home) Concert which Yanya took part in. It was later released on Bandcamp in October for only 24 hours for the Good Music To Avert The Collapse of American Democracy Comp.

Tonight, Annie Mac hosted her regular Radio 1 show ‘Future Sounds With Annie Mac’ as she counted down to her pick for the Hottest Record of the Year. After asking fans to vote via Twitter for their favourite song out of 20 incredible options, the winner was announced following a playlist of tracks.

Kicking off the show was SZA featuring Ty Dollaa $ign with ‘Hit Different’, and next came Aitch and AJ Tracey’s ‘Rain’, as well as music from Headie One, Laura Marling, Billie Eilish, Fontaines D.C., Arlo Parks, and more. Many listeners Tweeted in their thoughts as they awaited the end of the set to discover the Hottest Record of the Year.

Mac shared interviews with some acts throughout, speaking to Romy, who said of beginning her solo career apart from ‘The XX’ “It’s been great, it’s a new experience. It’s fun to make some decisions, and meet some new people, new collaborators, and just write a more personal story.”

Franky Wah, creator of ‘Come Together’, said, “I think if I were to sit in the studio and try and make the record for the time it was going in, it wouldn’t have come out like ‘Come Together’ did.”

Coming up in third place was IDLES for popular song ‘Model Village’ from their latest album ‘Ultra Mono’. The release was met in September with praise from fans and critics, while the single was the final track to be shared before the full album came out. The ‘Model Village’ music video currently stands at 523,000 views, projecting comical cartoon animations to match the wild rock sound.

The runner up of the evening was ‘Bad Friend‘ by Rina Sawayama from her debut album ‘Sawayama’. The singer commented, “It’s one of the most personal songs I’ve ever written, really. On the morning of the session that I wrote it, I checked in with an old friend that we’d actually fallen out with. When I say ‘checked in’ – I kind of stalked her on Facebook, and realised that she’d had a baby. I hadn’t known anything about, between the time we fell out to now, her having a baby. I just felt like a bad friend.”

Finally, the confirmed Hottest Record of the Year was ‘Obey‘, the collaboration between Bring Me The Horizon and Yungblud. One of the most popular tracks this year, the single has gained over 10 million views on YouTube and a whopping 25 million Spotify streams.

Lead vocalist of Bring Me The Horizon Oli Sykes appeared live on the show in a full-length interview to discuss the win. He said, “The night we released it, and premiered it, the hype felt tangible and there was so much excitement around it.” Yungblud also spoke to Mac, saying, “Bring Me The Horizon were such a massive part of my soul, really, as an artist, and discovering who I was.”
