Just over a decade ago, Swim Deep’s frontman Austin Williams was wistfully singing “Fuck your romance, I wanna pretend/That Jenny Lee Lindberg is my girlfriend”. Now Jenny’s joining the band. Warpaint’s bassist Jenny Lee Lindberg has teamed up with Birmingham indie pop band Swim Deep to add a dark and romantic bassline to a reworked version of the band’s debut single, 2012’s “King City”.

Listen to “King City (Jennylee’s Version)” below:

The band shared on Instagram that the cover art for the single, featuring Williams sitting in his bedroom with a clipping of Lindberg behind him, was taken during the “King City” music video shoot. Williams explained, “Plastered on my wall among other heroes of mine was a cut out of Jenny from the beat magazine i pined over, i had artists i’d look up to, and places i’d like to visit on that wall. talismans to dream next to.”

He nostalgically reminisced, “The song was about fleeing the small towns and cities i was raised in, yet keeping love and admiration for the precious youth i spent there. It was a cocky teenage coming of age anthem with a 4/4 beat which i stole from mgmt kids.”

Williams joked that he “half expected a cease and desist” when Jenny reached out to the band all these years later “but instead we got the best remix i’ve ever heard, the baseline is everything, it’s dark and sexy and i can imagine running through a festival with my mates at 17 years old to it”.

Lindberg also took to Instagram to share her excitement over the collab writing, “i love you guys! my heart feels warm and cozy. and i was super stoked to spin the wheel, and MAKE IT DARKER”.

Past and present members of Swim Deep reunited to tell tales of times past and spin records over some pints for Boogaloo radio on the 27th April. Fans got the chance to sit in during the show held in Highgate courtesy of Dork magazine.

Swim Deep are set to embark on a tour that will take them across the UK from the end of May until mid-June. The tour is in celebration of the 10th anniversary of their debut album Where The Heaven Are We – an essential for British indie kids of the 2010s. The band will be supported by a host of artists including fellow Brum-based indie rockers Jaws, former Palma Violets member Chilli Jesson, London-based trio Sad Boys Club, indie newcomers Overpass, and Irish singer/songwriter Paulric O’Meara. For remaining tickets and more information see here.

In May last year, the Californian neo-psychedelic band Warpaint, which first united on Valentine’s Day all the way back in 2004, released their fourth studio album Radiate Like This. The album was preceded by the singles “Stevie” and “Champion”. Lindberg also released her second solo album in the same month under the name jennylee. The album entitled Heart Tax included a cover of the Fugazi’s “I’m So Tired” originally recorded for Record Store Day in 2020.

Nigel Godrich and Dilly Gent run musical web-series From the Basement hasn’t released any new performances in around 13 years. But with such high-profile appearances from artists like appearances from The White Stripes, The Shins, Albert Hammond Jr., Jarvis Cocker, and Beck; it was clear the series wasn’t going to vanish so soon. Both of the now legendary Radiohead shows have been praised immensely – with some even saying that The King Of Limbs: Live From the Basement acts as the definitive version of the album (an opinion which I’m inclined to agree with). Today, an announcement of series 3 sees IDLES, Squid, The Sons Of Kemet, Warpaint, Caribou, and Nilüfer Yanya join the roster in June. You can watch the trailer below.

While many online performance shows have gained a lot of traction in the last few years; everyone’s seen at least one episode of NPR’s Tiny Desk Series, COLORSxSTUDIO’s unique aesthetic took socials by storm, triple j’s Like a Version consistently goes viral with its genuinely great (Denzel Curry’s take on ‘Bulls on Parade’ sticks out to me) and wackier (it’d be rude not to mention The Wiggles cover of Elephant…) covers. But From the Basement strips back the gimmicks and charges straight in with the music. No audience, no time wasting… just get in there and show us what you’ve got. That’s what makes this show special; the music.

In a statement, Godrich commented on the return of the basement, “What a pleasure it has been doing this again!” adding, “I’m still just a fan, still super excited to have the opportunity to film all these great artists and have loved making these new shows. After being so busy doing other things I felt that the time was right to rekindle this idea… to somehow bring it into the present, but the same rules apply now as they did then… no audience or presenter… just a direct connection with the viewer and a chance for us to take some time to do something special in a controlled environment… the priority being to make it sound and look great….”

The series comes in association with Sonos Radio and We Transfer, while the streams will all be available online for free here, We Transfer will offer an additional song for each artist with a subscription to the site. Sonos Radio will also be broadcasting complete sets, both new and old, for the foreseeable future.

The Los Angeles natives Warpaint have released a new track titled; “Stevie”, which is paired with a strange and immersive new video that completes the beautifully romantic piece. The song is the second example of what’s to come from the band’s upcoming fourth album Radiate Like This (due to arrive on 6th May 2022).

Warpaint described the idea which was central to the song, saying; “Stevie is a love song, pure and true. Sincere as it comes with a little bit of Freak. A cosmic celebration of the thing we all look for in life. And our contribution to one of the most beloved song genres.”

Describing the new video which explores fractal, kaleidoscopic imagery, Warpaint said;“Stevie is a love song, pure and true,” the band says. “Sincere as it comes with a little bit of Freak. A cosmic celebration of the thing we all look for in life. And our contribution to one of the most beloved song genres.”.

The innovative new video was created alongside the creative art collective named; Fascinated By Everything. With specific respects paid to director Chris Holmes, the band described the process saying; “Thinking of visuals for ‘Stevie’ we weren’t seeing a story or a performance, but a kind of ‘Tunnel Of Love’ image kept coming to my head, more like waves of serotonin, what love feels like, Right around that time Chris showed us what he was working on and it was like, ‘Woah, this is way more ‘Tunnel Of Love’ than we could’ve imagined!”

With striking graphics of bizarre entities and colourful shapes, the band went on to say; “All of the visuals are made from physical objects, so all of the light color and texture come from the real world and not just computer-generated graphics”. Holmes added; “It’s been such a joy to work with one of my favorite bands, Warpaint and collaborate to make some inter-dimensional kaleidoscopic beauty to radiate some love and light into this world.”

After a full six years since their critically-acclaimed album Heads Up, Warpaint have taken the valuable time from busy lives occupied by motherhood and stable jobs to generate the forthcoming album Radiate Like This, having worked both remotely and independently after the covid-19 pandemic to develop layer-by-layer, a wholly new album in their own time, resulting in a new body of work for fans to roll back the years and reignite their love for such an amazing group of artists.

Warpaint will be completing a run of UK and European tour dates. Tickets for which can be found here. The UK tour dates can be found down below:

Celebrated L.A. quartet Warpaint return with Radiate Like This, their first full length in six years, due on May 6th, fans have also been treated to their first taste of the new album in the form of new single “Champion”. You can listen to the new single, and see its accompanying video below. To celebrate the announcement the group have also announced a 6-night UK tour taking them through Scotland, Ireland, and England due shortly after the album’s release in May. Speaking of the single, the band explain, “Being a champion to oneself and for others. We are all in this together, life is too short not to strive for excellence in all that we do.”

It’s been 6 years since Warpaint last released new material, 2016’s Heads Up was received well by critics and fans alike, but 6 years is a long time. A lot has changed amongst the band. Warpaints four members (Emily Kokal, Jenny Lee Lindberg, Stella Mozgawa and Theresa Wayman) between them have had quite the list of errands to run, with babies, jobs, tours, solo albums, intercontinental and cross country moves all becoming priorities. So, coming back after all these years presents certain logistical challenges that almost kept them going their separate ways. Eventually, though, bandmates and friends of nearly 20 years simply couldn’t resist what had become so normal to them for so long. The added incentive that was the opportunity to work with legendary producer Sam Petts-Davies (possibly familiar for his work with Thom Yorke, Frank Ocean, Skullcrusher etc) only added to the drama when the group were forced to stop the sessions due to the arrival of COVID-19.

Labelled by the band as being “sharper and more focused” than any of their previous works the 10-track album highlights “the delicate interplay of four separate parts coalescing in motion, while somehow allowing each individual to shine a little brighter.”. See here for details on the album’s pre-order options, including limited-edition pink blossom vinyl colourways, and exclusive merch to be released in bundles with a copy of the album. You can also see here for more details on any of the dates on the group’s UK tour. But with the list of venues seeming particularly intimate, you may need to get in there early if you want to guarantee your placement at the shows.

“I love, admire and respect Fugazi with my whole heart… always have,” the Warpaint bassist shared her admiration for the band with The Line of Best Fit. She also added, “The sentiment of “I’m So Tired” is deeply moving and extremely relatable. It was such a pleasure and a pleasant surprise I was able to pull this off. I hope I did it justice, it sure was FUN (and that’s the point of it all). Big love and kudos to Fugazi forever.”

It has been around over months since the 38-year-old musician graced the indie fans with music. Her last work was a collaboration with Trentemøller for the track “Try a Little” to which jennylee contributes her vocal.

More good news for Warpaint’s fans: the bassist hinted back in December 2019 that the four-piece were cooking new material for the follow-up of 2016’s ‘Heads Up‘. Even though Warpaint has not released anything under their own name since 2016, they went on tour as an opening act for Harry Styles’ Asia tour in 2018, while dropping a track titled “The Brakes” as a soundtrack for horror film ‘The Turning‘. The four members also composed an original score for podcast ‘Motherhacker‘.
