She said: “I always like making things [and] they gave us different clothes from different [eras]. That was a Gucci dress; it was like a Marilyn Monroe ’50s-shape black swimming costume. “Like Americans – you always celebrate your country, I was thinking, ‘It’s the BRITs, I should put a flag on it.’ And the only flag I found was a tea towel, so I cut out a tea towel and sewed it on the Gucci dress.”  

The girl group, who performed the smash hits “Wannabe” and “Who Do You Think You Are” at the award show, certainly had a reason to celebrate. The band won British Single of the Year and British Video of the Year at the 1997 ceremony.

Horner also spoke about how she missed the first rounds of the auditions for Spice Girls. She said: “It wasn’t really the Spice Girls at that moment, just some people auditioning for a girl band, but I did miss it. I was up a mountain and I had burnt my face… Somehow, I kept the advert on my mirror and – a few months later – I thought, ‘Hmmm, I wonder if that’s still going.’ So, I ran them up and they said come on.” 

Earlier this year, the girl group released a never-seen-before alternative music video of their 90s classic “Smash” to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the third single from their classic album, Spiceworld. The album was a smashing success for the band and has since gone on to sell over one million copies in the UK and over four million in the US. Worldwide, the album has sold over 14 million copies. It has since become one of the best-selling albums of all time.  

Fans of the band have also been teased with more exciting news. Mel B, known as Scary Spice, told The Sun that the pop group have an announcement on the way. She said: “We are planning on releasing a statement. What that is, I can’t say right now because we’re just finishing off perfecting what we’re going to be doing together, all five of us, but it’s going to be something that the fans are really going to love.”  

The single “Wannabe” remains one of the girl band’s most well-known hits, and is the seventh best-selling debut single of all time, just behind “Careless Whisper” at number 6 and Britney Spears’ iconic “Baby One More Time” at number 5.

The new EP will be available to stream from the 9th July, and physical copies of the vinyl edition will be released a fortnight later.

This comes in the same week as the legendary pop band release their Pride t-shirt for 2021, featuring the slogan ‘proud and Wannabe your lover’, as showcased by Victoria Beckham on Instagram. In her post, which featured pictures of all five Spice Girls wearing the t-shirt, the singer and designer said: “Pride to me is a celebration of being completely yourself and this year’s T-shirt is a reminder of that. The Spice Girls really championed accepting yourself and others, being kind, having fun and just living your best life! The LGBTQ+ community is so close to my heart and I’m so proud to be supporting Pride 2021 with the girls and akt again this year.”

Proceeds from sales of the t-shirt will go to AKT Charity, who work to combat LGBTQ+ youth homelessness.

Regarding the upcoming documentary, a representative of the Spice Girls recently shared in a press release on Twitter: “Spice Up Your Life with new documentary ‘Girl Powered: The Spice Girls’…Through archival footage and revealing interviews, this series will tell the complete story of the best-selling girl band of all time.”

Forging out a niche in the cut-throat music scene during their hey-day and charging the charts alongside the likes of Britpop giants Oasis and Blur, the Spice Girls captured the world’s hearts and dancefloors in the early nineties, remaining an enduring symbol of British culture, friendship and girl power even today.

Formed in 1994, the Spice Girls dominated the UK and US charts with songs like Viva Forever, 2 Become 1, and of course, Wannabe. Aside from The Beatles, the Spice Girls were the only band to secure 2 Christmas Number 1’s in a row, with the smash hits Goodbye and Too Much. Since their initial parting of ways in 1999, the Spice Girls reunited in 2007 and again in 2019 for two huge comeback tours. 

Before the coronavirus pandemic knocked the music world as we knew it into dangerous waters, there were reports that the Spice Girls will come together again for a 2021 tour. Victoria Beckham, aka Posh Spice, sat out the last reunion tour, and is unfortunately not expected to join Ginger, Baby, Sporty and Scary in the next leg. The Spice Girls’ anniversary world tour will involve shows in America, Australia and Europe, exciting fans everywhere for the Spice Girls’ monumental return.

The Spice Girls celebrated Wannabe turning 24 years old on the 8th July with a commemorative post on their official Instagram page. The post featured a short clip of the girl band dancing in their world-famous Wannabe music video, along with the heartfelt caption: “Happy Birthday to ‘Wannabe’ – 24 years old today! Thank you to our incredible fans for your loyal support from day one #FriendshipNeverEnds”

In support of music industry workers amidst the coronavirus crisis, Emma Bunton recently used her huge platform to display her support for the vital #LetTheMusicPlay campaign. In a post on Instagram, Bunton wrote “the music industry is more than just the artists. This is about everyone behind the scenes who helps you create what you see on stage.”

A BBC talent show appears to be the favourite option. July 2017 will be the 21st anniversary of their debut single ‘Wannabe’, and April will see a series of live heats/shows auditioning potential future ‘Spices’ for Hyde Park, July.

Scary Spice, Mel B, said she agreed to join Emma and Geri, because:

“. . . the other b*****s didn’t want to do it.”

Mel added: “I don’t think we could ever replace Sporty or Posh but I’d like to invite other people to sing with us.”

Gone are the days of ‘Posh’ as we knew her. As we recognise the 20th anniversary of ‘Wannabe’, Victoria Beckham is well-powered as ‘Fashion Icon (ex-Spice)’. Her image has taken a massive transformation from a quiet girl in her early-twenties to the powerful woman we see today.

What do we need? Another posh-ish, mysterious, pretty-ish one like Victoria, and, coincidently, because of Mel C’s athletic fashion choice – including the odd high kick – a ‘Sporty-ish one’? Or will we decide on two completely new ‘Spices’, 20-years on? Surely it can’t be ‘Social-media Spice’? in 1996, there were not that many with the luxury of mobile phones, therefore should we expect the new ‘Spices’ to be the similar ages to our regular names, or a representative modern-take? We will follow developments to find out.

A talent show is the modern way: The Spice Girls remain legends to the huge rise of a female voice in a male-dominated 90s music scene; and correlated quite easily into this. Little Mix demonstrate a gigantic popularity, and music fans will welcome back the influence of The Spice Girls once more, with a further doubly-added spice.
