In a recent survey from PRS, 2,000 Brits named their top 10 love songs. At the top of the list was ‘All Of Me’ by John Legend, closely followed by Whitney Houston’s power ballad ‘I Will Always Love You’.

The UK’s top 10 love songs:

All Of Me, John Legend (11%)

I Will Always Love You, Whitney Houston (10%)

Chasing Cars, Snow Patrol (9%)

Thinking Out Loud, Ed Sheeran (9%)

I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing, Aerosmith (8%)

Just The Way You Are, Bruno Mars (7%)

Angels, Robbie Williams (7%)

(Everything I Do) I Do It For You, Bryan Adams (7%)

My Heart Will Go On, Celine Dion (5%)

The Power Of Love, Jennifer Rush (4%)

Written by John Legend for his then-fiancée, now wife, Chrissy Teigen, ‘All Of Me’ is a piano and vocal ballad that has become a popular choice for weddings and romantic occasions. It shot to number one on the Billboard 200, and number two on the UK Singles Chart.

The UK’s top 10 love songs have an average BPM of 111. This shows that songs with faster tempos may boost your romantic mood.

The participants were asked which genres they found to be the most romantic – around a quarter (24%) chose chill-out music, followed closely by pop (21%) and RnB (20%). Lower in the romantic rankings were hip hop (2%), heavy metal (1%) and house music (0.7%).

In 2021, the official UK Charts Company compiled their data to make a list of the ‘Best-selling Love Songs of All-Time’, based on both physical sales and downloads. At the top of the list was “Love Is All Around” by Scottish soft-rockers, Wet Wet Wet. Originally written and performed by the Troggs, the song was covered by Wet Wet Wet for the soundtrack of the film Four Weddings and A Funeral. The tune managed to sell 1.91 million copies and spent 15 weeks at No.1.

Following closely was ‘Unchained Melody’ by Robson and Jerome. Originally written as a theme for the film Unchained, it has since been recorded in over 1,500 recordings by more than 670 artists. The Robson and Jerome version became the best-selling single of 1995 in the UK, also becoming Simon Cowell’s first big hit after he signed the two popstars. Another cover version by Gareth Gates made it onto the best-sellers list.

The Top 10 Best-selling Love Songs in the UK:

Wet, Wet, Wet – Love Is All Around

Robson & Jerome – Unchained Melody/The White Cliffs of Dover

On 14th February, just last Friday, Sam Smith put out new song accompanied by music video, called ‘To Die For’. After teasing fans with lyrics from the single on social media, the song is finally here.

In a dark twist for the day of love, this soul ballad is not for happy couples. “I just want somebody to die for” is the main chorus lyric, with samples taken from thriller Donnie Darko. The theme is not new for Smith, though we’ve heard a lot of upbeat collaborations from them over the past three years. ‘To Die For’ takes listeners back to when they first fell in love with the singer. At 6 million Spotify streams already, fans are connecting with the emotional lyrics and sound.

The video is inspired by the opening of the artist’s new London wig shop and features a mannequin head who watches couples outside the shop, wishing to find love. A very creative and slightly strange concept, it has caught viewers attention, gaining 7 million views.

Smith talked to Roman Kemp on Capital Breakfast, saying “it’s my twenty seventh year of being single on Valentine’s Day. I’m over it.” Many fans can relate to this, and what better way to spend the day than listening to a new hit from the talented singer/song-writer?

‘To Die For’ is also the name of the upcoming album, set for release on 1st May 2020. If that sounds to far away, buy the single here and pre-order the full album. Other songs to feature on the album include singles ‘How Do You Sleep’ and ‘Dancing With A Stranger’.

My THIRD album TO DIE FOR is yours May 1st!!!! You can preorder tomorrow.
I‘m more proud of this album than anything I’ve ever done. I’ve really set myself free the last two years whilst writing this & I hope you can dance and relate to these stories. It’s all for you, always xx pic.twitter.com/bbU7jAU06l

— Sam Smith (@samsmith) February 13, 2020

Smith’s career took off in 2012 when they collaborated with Disclosure on their song ‘Latch’, peaking at number 11 on the UK Singles Chart. They were also featured on a single by Naughty Boy and put out their first EP in 2013. ‘In The Lonely Hour’ was the name of Smith’s first studio album, released with Capitol Records and containing songs ‘Stay With Me’, ‘Money On My Mind’, and ‘I’m Not The Only One’. No in the process of promoting their third album, Smith has won an Oscar for his work on James Bond film Spectre, as well as three Brit Awards, and four Grammys.

Currently there have been no official announcements regarding the album or tour, but it’s likely that Smith will perform around the world within the next year. In a tweet, they said of the new single “I can’t express how excited I am to sing this live one day soon”. Watch this space for updates.

Legendary British rocker David Bowie has released a new video for latest single ‘Valentines Day’. It is the fourth single to come out of the glam rock icon’s 24th studio album ‘The Next Day’, released in March earlier this year.

Bowie has come under scrutiny already this year for some of his videos, with members of the Catholic Church criticising him for recent video ‘The Next Day’, which featured Bowie playing the role of a priest alongside Gary Oldman and Marion Cotillard. The video was ordered to be taken down, but has since resurfaced on YouTube. He seems to be taking a much more cautious role this time around however, with the ‘Valentines Day’ video featuring Bowie sitting in a large, decrepit room on a stool with his trusty Steinberger guitar as company.
