Underworld to Headline AVA Festival 2025: Celebrating 10 Years of Electronic Music in Belfast

Legendary electronic music duo Underworld has been announced as the headline act for AVA Festival 2025, marking a huge milestone as the festival celebrates its 10th anniversary at Titanic Slipways, Belfast, on May 30-31, 2025. Known for their anthemic soundscapes and genre-defining hits, Underworld’s performance is set to be a highlight of the year for electronic music fans.

Underworld, the British electronic music duo formed in 1987, is renowned for their pioneering contributions to the genre. Consisting of Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, they gained international acclaim with their 1996 hit ‘Born Slippy (NUXX)’ featured in the film ‘Trainspotting’. Over the years, Underworld has released numerous influential albums, including ‘Dubnobasswithmyheadman‘ and ‘Second Toughest in the Infants‘, solidifying their status as electronic music innovators.Over the years, AVA has expanded its footprint beyond Belfast, hosting events in cities like Amsterdam, Glasgow, London, and even Mumbai, reflecting its growing international appeal. The festival is celebrated for its eclectic mix of local talent and globally acclaimed artists. This year, AVA will bring artists such as Overmono, Ewan McVicar, and Sloucho, on stage.

AVA Festival has a history of featuring prominent artists in its programs. For instance, the AVA London 2025 edition, scheduled for March 20-22, includes notable figures such as FKA Twigs, Jarvis Cocker, Munroe Bergdorf, and Annie Mac. Other past line-ups featured names such as Larry Heard, LSDXOXO, Orbital, and Bicep.
The AVA Festival has been instrumental in fostering a “second age of rave” in Northern Ireland, providing a platform for both homegrown and international talent. As it approaches its tenth anniversary, the 2025 edition promises to be a landmark event, celebrating a decade of cultural impact and looking ahead to the future of the electronic music scene.

Electronic Legends Underworld Announce 2024 UK/EU Tour

Electronic duo Underworld – comprised of Rick Smith and Karl Hyde – have announced a 2024 EU/UK tour. The tour comprises of dates from March to April across Mainland Europe before rounding out the tour in the United Kingdom.

The announcement follows the duos recently released single ‘Denver Luna’ earlier this month, an 8-minute track which was teased at shows earlier this year. The track has also been released in an acapella format which differs massively from the full release. The duo has played many large shows in 2023 including a sold-out set at London’s Royal Albert Hall and a set at Coachella Festival in California.

The duo also earlier in the summer of this year released a single, ‘And The Colour Red’. The duo has not released so much material during this latter stage in their career since their last full length album Drift Songs, released in 2019, in which the band released new music, art and text weekly across the entirety of the year.

The 2024 tour will kick off with a four-night residency at Amsterdam’s Gashouder on March 13-16. The duo then heads into Berlin’s UFO Velodrom on March 22^nd to start the main portion of the tour, then heading into venues in Denmark, Norway and Belgium. The duo then rounds out the tour in the United Kingdom, playing Usher Hall in Edinburgh on April 3^rd, Alexandra Palace in London on April 6^th and Aviva Studios in Manchester on April 12^th.

Underworld debuted a lot of new material as they played their first shows of the year, earlier in March with shows in Bristol and London. They debuted four new songs, two of which have been officially released, ‘And The Colour Red’ and ‘Denver Luna’. The other tracks yet to have an official release were titled: ‘Gene Pool’ and ‘Strawberry Hotel’.

Underworld Play Fresh Debut Songs At Recent Live Shows

Underworld took to the stage in Bristol on the 19th March with a welcoming surprise under their sleeve. Playing at the Marble Factory, they included four debut songs in their live setlist, leaving fans gagging for more.

They opened the show with one of the debut tracks “Gene Pool”. Setting the scene for the audience in reassurance that, what they were about to experience, wasn’t like any other of their live shows.

The duo maintained a sturdy setlist throughout. These included their latest releases “Juanita 2022” from last year, “Two Months Off” from 2021 . An appearance from their last studio album DRIFT Series 1 called “Border Country” and a few intricacies from older releases. From their 1999 album Beaucoup Fish the duo played “Cups”, “Jumbo” and “Shudder”. Not to mention the 1994 Dubnobasswithmyheadman playing “Mmm… Skyscraper I Love You”.

They played golden tracks, and after “Gene Pool” as the intro, they introduced another fresh debut “Strawberry Hotel” as the fifth song, followed by “Denver Luna” as the seventh and “And The Colour Red” as a finishing line for the performance, before their final “Born Slippy” encore.

Their Bristol audience were left buzzing after the show and some consider it to be the best show they’ve attended yet. “Bristol last night was one of the best gigs I’ve ever been to” stated a fan. And another “Brizzle last night…if you weren’t there, you missed an absolute treat. Karl and Rick – thank you”.

Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, the members of the band, are a mysterious double. Cheeky teasers in live shows to uproar fans curiosity and anticipation are done to the tee. It feels like they’re about to announce an upcoming tour, which the audience seem quite desperate for. Or they are about to drop a new album release date. Who knows. The suspense is clearly there and is already starting to boil over.

They performed the same show including these four fresh cuts at another recent gig. On March the 20th they showcased another blindingly flavoursome show in London at the Royal Albert Hall for Teenage Cancer Trust.

The British duo have a few shows coming up. Over the pond they will be playing at Coachella on the 15th April, the Warfield in San Francisco on the 21st April, Coachella Weekend 2 on the 22nd April and at Movement Festival in Detroit on the 29th May. Following after they will be making their way back to the UK to play at Junction 2 in London on the 21st July, they will be playing at The Secret Garden Party on the 22nd July and finish off at Lowlands Festival on the 18th August in the Netherlands.

HECK Announce One-Off Reunion Show In Camden

HECK, Nottingham’s answer to the 2010’s hardcore punk scene, have had a career almost as violently unpredictable as their music and performances are. After announcing their disappearance without any explanation back in 2017, the band would take to the stage at ArcTanGent Festival for the last time… apparently. But just like all great breakups – think LCD Soundsystem, Guns n Roses, or maybe even the Spice Girls – they probably won’t last as long as you may think. The band announced a one-off show at 2000 Trees Festival in July, then again fell into radio silence. Now, finally, another show. This time at the legendary Underworld in Camden. HECK’s history has been no stranger to publicity in the few years they were in the public eye. In 2015, the group were sued by Japanese film company Toho over their original band name, “Baby Godzilla”. Obviously, it’s hard to argue the case when they own the copyright to a character literally called “Baby Godzilla” (or Godzilla Junior in a few places, but the point remains the same) so they became HECK to avoid the lawsuit causing any real damage. Once the change settled, they released their debut LP Instructions. The album was particularly reminiscent of early Dillinger Escape Plan, or even some more grindcore-esque names like Napalm Death. But the timeline didn’t extend much farther than that. The split came the following year, and no one really knows why.

The band’s return this time around seems to have come with even less chatter than the previous. “It means the damn world that so many of you are still here for this band. Thank you for your patience. Smashing will resume this Friday. Big love to one and all.” Reads the band’s returning statement for 2000 Trees. After 5 years off, the wordless surprise return goes to show that some things aren’t really meant to change. No answers. All we can do at this point is hope that some more information comes to light. Why did they go? Why are they back? Does this mean there’s new music? Will we hear it? We may never know.

We may never go beyond what we have here. Odd one-off shows popping up every now and then. The prospect of new music seems to have been squashed after nothing new was even alluded to at the previous show. Maybe things will change.

Band members Harrison Swann (Lead Vocals and rhythm guitar) Chloe Stacey McGregor (Drums), Thomas Holmes (Lead guitar) and George Sullivan (Bass) released their debut single “Fast and Loud” which was described as intense raucous post-punk energy in 2019. The band sight The Cure, The Stranglers as well as Echo and The Bunnymen as some of their musical influences. Frontmen Swann described the band’s new single and said “It’s our ‘born smooth” Watch the band’s video for their new single “Underworld” here. The band’s EP Touch the Ground was produced by Hot Chip’s Al Doyle and Joe Goddard, Swann said “Working with Joe and Al was a dream and really helped us to get the voices and ideas we had in our minds. Swann added that the producing duo also helped the band’s confidence to grow. The band have previously worked with Goddard on their two-part collaborative single “Trouble” with DJ Eli Brown.

The Warehouse Project Announce 2018 Line-Up

Annual Manchester event The Warehouse Project has announced it’s line-up for 2018. It was announced a day prior that this would be the final year of the Project at it’s Store Street location, as well as several dates at Manchester’s Albert Hall. The programme will bring the very best in Dance, Hip-Hop, and Electronic music to the city.

A future location for the Warehouse project is yet to be announced, but fans will be hugely excited by the epic, 12 week programme that has been announced today. You can buy tickets for all dates here, when tickets go on sale at 9am on July 27. The full list of performers can be seen below.

The most high-profile performers include the likes of Four Tet, Deadmau5, Underworld, and Pusha T. there will also be closing parties on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day- titled End of Store Street, with full details of the location’s last hurrah yet to be announced.
