Jorja Smith has shared a new single titled ‘The Way I Love You’. The song sees the singer explore an old-school garage sound, with the genre’s classic drums, bass wobbles and synthesised strings featured in the production from Ed Thomas, Maverick Sabre and Skayk.

She’s released a cinematic video for the new track too. The visual accompaniment, directed by KC Locke, sees Jorja dancing and performing in a dimly lit rave and riding in the passenger seat of a fast car, looking glamorous in a fur coat and jewellery.

She’s explored garage music in her previous work, with notable releases like ‘On My Mind’, a smooth, soulful collaboration with renowned UK grime producer Preditah.

Jorja has shared her excitement for the single in a press release: ‘The Way I Love You’ is just so much fun. It takes me back in time – there’s something nostalgic about it but now at the same time. I had the pleasure of working with Maverick Sabre, Ed Thomas and Shayk on this one. Every time I play it with my girls, I get so hyped – it’s a proper head-skanker.

Her last album, ‘Falling or Flying’, was released in 2023 to positive reviews, peaking at No. 3 on the UK album chart. The Walsall singer has been dropping several new singles recently, from downbeat, emotional numbers like ‘Don’t Let Me Go’ to the uplifting afro-house banger, ‘High’.

One notable collab that came recently was with AJ Tracey on the rapper’s sample-grime single ‘Crush’. The track saw Jorja trade singing for rapping, with fans commending her for the inclusion of her Midlands accent.

As well as her new musical activity, it was confirmed earlier this April that Jorja would be joining the bill of Open’er Festival. The event will take place in Gydnia, Poland, from July 2 – July 5. She joins a stacked lineup including J Balvin, Schoolboy Q, Doechii, and headliners Linkin Park, Massive Attack and Nine Inch Nails.

This isn’t the only festival she has booked for this year – she’ll also be appearing at Parklife 2025 in Manchester alongside headliner 50 Cent, and Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Liverpool where she’ll share the same stage as Lola Young, Tate McRae and Mumford & Sons.

Later in May she will embark on her ‘Falling Or Flying’ 2025 tour, with gigs scheduled in Manchester, Wolverhampton, Dublin and London. You can find our MXDWN coverage on that here.

On 11th November 2021 it was confirmed that famed and celebrated musician Graeme Edge has tragically passed away aged 80. The drummer is best known as one of the founding members of the British blues band Moody Blues. A statement approaching the sad news was posted on the band’s social media pages, the moving tribute was written by frontman Justin Hayward.

Edge was born on 30th March 1941 in Staffordshire and formed The Moody Blues at the age of 23. Edge was a key songwriter in the group and was often described as the quintet’s poet. Edge’s poems can be heard on many tracks, with his poem “Departure” being used to open the group’s third studio album In Search Of The Lost Chord. The talented artist also wrote over 13 songs and often contributed to his bandmate’s solo work.

Edge formed The Moody Blues in Birmingham in 1964, the original lineup consisted of Keyboardist Mike Pinder, Multi-instrumentalist Ray Thomas, Denny Laine on guitar, Edge on drums and bassist Clint Warwick. The band went through a line-up change after their formation which included original members Pinder, Thomas, Edge as well as new members Justin Hayward on lead vocals and guitar and new bassist John Lodge. This lineup would remain throughout the 70s, an era now classed their classic and best-known period.

After their first performance in 1964, the group gained attention through their work in rhythm and blues music. They soon caught the attention of industry professionals and were signed to the management company Ridgepride. Alex Wharton, the company’s founder, was an A&R rep for Record Label Decca Records, the label then signed the band in 1964. In 1965 the group released their debut album The Magnificent Melodies which garnered the group considerable success. The group’s best-known track, “Nights In White Satin”, was included on the band’s second studio album Days Of Future Passed, released in 1967. The band would go on to release 14 more studio albums and eventually disbanded in 1974 but reunited in 1977.

After The Moody Blues’ hiatus Edge embarked on a trip around the world on his yacht Delia, Edge would find inspiration in the Greek Island of Corfu and would later use the musical influences in his work. After his voyage Edge released his solo work, his initial solo single “We Like To Do It/Shotgun” was released in 1974. The following year, Edge released his first solo album entitled Kick Off Your Muddy Boots with the single “The Tunnel/Bareback Rider”.

The artist’s second solo album Paradise Ballroom was released in 1977, Edge used his inspiration found on his trip within the album and fused Calypso and Salsa beats with his original sound. In the same year, the artist also released the single “Everybody Needs Somebody/Be My Eyes”. The solo material was released under Edge’s studio band The Graeme Edge Band, the group also included vocalist and guitarist Adrian Gurvitz and artist Paul Gurvitz.

Since the news of Edge’s death was confirmed tributes for the musician have poured in, with many citing him as an influence. Edge’s partner, Rilla Fleming has confirmed that the cause of death was metastatic cancer.

Grime artist Jaykae and R&B singer Jorja Smith have joined forces for their new single ‘1000 Nights‘ – which was produced by Ezra. The sincere collaboration offers it’s listeners reasons why, as stated in the track, “two Js better than one J”.

‘1000 Nights‘ initiates a switch up from Jaykae’s previous music. In a style unlike that witnessed in his ‘Chop (Henry The 8th)‘, the Birmingham artist provides more sincere and personal lyrics. These lyrics, along with Jaykaes contemplative bars and Jorja’s heartfelt verse, come together to provide a narrative – a narrative bought to life in the singles music video.

The music video for ‘1000 Nights‘, directed by Luke Biggins, follows Jorja and Jaykae as the devastating reality of the story line unfolds. In conversation about how the single was produced, Jaykae explained that “The track was written and recorded with me and Jorja in the studio together, not sending across vocal takes between studios, and I think you can hear that—there’s a different energy about it. It’s got a classic garage sound, but the storyline is so relevant to today”. This different energy is accentuated by the merging of Jaykae’s powerful lyricism – which touches on family decisions and sacrifices – as well as the sweeping heavy heartedness provided by Jorja. The two artists recording as one in the studio is wholeheartedly reflected in the smooth development of their single, as well as its accompanying video. You can watch the music video for ‘1000 Nights‘ below.

The new track celebrates the much-anticipated return of UK grime MC Jaykae. It has been a matter of years since the artist released the album ‘Where Have You Been?’, and it is more than good to see his music being imprinted freshly in the minds of his listeners. It is no doubt that the past few years have granted Jaykae a successful career – with collaborations featuring the likes of Aitch, The Streets and Stormzy. But with this new track, and a collaboration with Grammy nominated Jorja Smith, Jaykaes name on the UK music scene is even further solidified. Jaykae took to social media today to express his gratitude for the immediate response to ‘1000 Nights‘.

In recent months Jorja Smith has come on strength and strength, most notably with the release of ‘Be Right Back’. The eight track project has been described by the artist as a “waiting room” for her second album, which isn’t due until next year. ‘1000 Nights‘ is certainly keeping fans satisfied until then.

The joint force of the two midlands stars on ‘1000 Nights‘ is certainly worth listening to, and you can do so here.
