Today Bristol band, Idles have announced the release of the official video for their song, “Stockholm Syndrome”, via their Twitter feed. The song is the sixth track off Crawler, the punk band’s fourth studio album, which came out in November last year. Landing today on their YouTube channel, the video was directed by Idles guitarist Lee Kiernan and Charlotte Gosch.

Stockholm Syndrome music video out now! Watch it here: https://t.co/fMttFuWqAl pic.twitter.com/56n24RlM7l

The Jodorowsky-esque video follows two kids who stumble upon an odd, ceremonial gathering in the desert where a group of strange-looking masked men and women pass pink rocks to each other in a ritualistic fashion. The kids run toward the bizarre sight and eventually find themselves surrounded as the figures keep passing the rocks to each other. You can watch the video below.

In a statement reported by NME, Kiernan and Gosch explain, “The initial idea of the video was to try and visualise the monotony hell of having to work to survive and how the ‘machine’ eventually engulfs you and strips you of your freedoms,”

The two continued, “But we wanted to achieve this in a metaphorical way that kept the meaning as open as possible. So, it becomes rather a visual representation that can be read in many different ways.”

Talking about making and realising their vision, the creative duo said, “The process of making the video was very fulfilling for the both of us as we were able to physically create what we were imagining. Both the masks and shapes were handmade and painted by ourselves and friends”.

The two finished, “Working with our DOP Rob French we were also able to realise the long shots of each verse and the opening scene of the dancers. We both love the exhaustive and immediate feeling that a long shot can convey, like in Gus Van Sant’s Gerry, which we referenced quite literally.”

Crawler was a sea change for the band garnering rave reviews. Known for their confrontational and direct songwriting, the album saw them move to a more poetic and abstract style.

When asked about the change, frontman Joe Talbot told NME, “I was distracted by my ego and my fears. The residual feelings came as anger. I bullshitted my way through enough, but it’s now time to challenge myself, set things straight and start again. I took responsibility for my accountability and learned a lot from that. I’m a lot more calm and I don’t get anxious. I was sober for two years. It all just came together.”

After a career full of commercial success the group went on an indefinite hiatus in 2011, the band made headlines last month when they confirmed their reformation. To further cement their return, the group released their comeback single “Charmer”, the track dropped on 19th May 2022 via record label Xploded and marks their first single release in eleven years. The band’s new single “Charmer” was written by the group, Junior Edwards and the track’s producer Rymez, after its premiere on BBC Radio 1Xtra the new song was then made available across all major streaming platforms.

James Blake has released a new music video for the single “Famous Last Words”. The music video dropped on 3rd November 2021 and has already garnered attention from fans and critics. The visually bold clip begins with a shot of a heart monitor machine and pans onto Blake in a hospital bed. The video features Blake walking around a seemingly destroyed city whilst engaging in heated conversations. The end of the video shows Blake running into the sea still in the initial shot’s hospital gown.

The single was originally released on 13th September 2021 and was the third track to be released from Blake’s recent album, Friends That Break Your Heart. The artist’s fifth studio album was released on 8th October 2021 via Republic Records and Polydor Records. The album was originally meant for release in September but due to complications in production caused by COVID-19, the release date was postponed. Blake’s newest album marks his first full release in three years and follows his 2019 album Assume Form.

The track and music video is a wonderful snapshot of Blake’s tremendous talent. The dark electronic beats work alongside the track’s deep lyrical content to pull the listener into a bittersweet sonic dream. The single has cultivated an incredible 6 million streams and has received rave reviews from critics. As stated by the press release, NME has called the single “Pulsating” and Stereogum pronounced, “‘Famous Last Words,’ features pulsing synths that gradually swell into grand orchestral majesty.”

The single’s album, Friends That Break Your Heart, has also sired critical acclaim. The Wall Street Journal described the album as, “An excellent showcase of Mr. Blake’s gifts, which on the evidence here remain intact a dozen years into his winding career.” The Independent also spoke highly of Blake’s release, “Few artists can make such heartbreak sound so pretty, while still reflecting on all its weirdness and complexity.”

On the album’s release date the singer took to Instagram to announce its availability.

The new single has been partnered with an exciting new music video directed by Santiago Arriaga, a Mexican director and producer known for his narrative works, the director has been nominated for various awards and has also been featured within the Venice Film Festival. Matching the manic energy and hopeful messages heard within the new single musically and lyrically, the accompanying music video also presents themes of initial confusion and finding hope within the context of loss.

Lead vocalist and guitarist Justin Young has described the music video and has illustrated the subject matter which they wished to convey throughout the medium. Young also comments on the set location for the video and the connection in which it holds for the group. “We wanted the ‘Alone Star’ video to be one of hope, capturing the moment when you realise all is not lost. Anyone that has driven through the desert to Las Vegas will know about the roadside casinos that start popping up and lighting the freeways as you arrive into Nevada. This motel is exactly the same sort of institution, existing in the shadows of Love City where feelings of all kinds can be found if you look hard enough. Mexico is one of our favourite places in the world and an intensely characterful place, literally metres away from where we recorded this song, so it felt like the perfect location for our protagonists to find what they were looking for…”

The single was first introduced to fans via radio play, ‘Alone Star’ had its first play on Jack Saunders show on BBC Radio 1 on Thursday evening. The new track is the third single to be released from the band’s upcoming album entitled ‘Back In Love City’, the album’s first single ‘Headphones Baby’ was released 14th May 2021 and the album’s title track ‘Back In Love City’ was release 25th June 2021. The group recruited celebrated producer Daniel Ledinsky to join their team for the new album, Ledinsky is known for his work with Rihanna as well as Brooklyn alt-rockers TV on the Radio. As stated by Young, the group’s forthcoming album was recorded close to the video’s set location. The band’s fifth studio album set to be released on 10th September 2021 was recorded at Sonic Ranch located in El Paso Texas, the popular recording studio famed as the largest residential recording studio in the world.

In support of the band’s album release this autumn, The Vaccines will hit the road in September for their UK tour. The group have partnered with the Music Venue Trust on selected dates of their newly announced UK tour, the trust has been instrumental in their efforts to save live music venues throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The first leg of the tour will begin at Aylesbury Waterside located within Buckinghamshire and will end in Bournemouth with a performance at Bournemouth Old Fire Station.

Along with the group’s official tour, the ‘Wreckin’ Bar (Ra Ra Ra)‘ performers will also support their new album’s release with a small tour of record store performances partnered with live venues, the full list of dates can be found below.

The new release is the first track in which includes a traditional vocal appearance from Bez and also features vocals from Firouzeh. Previously known for his maraca playing and famed interactive stage antics, it is exciting news for fans old and new to hear Bez take centre stage. The press release for the new track has provided the following description, “hypnotic homage to the glory days of acid house“.

The track seems to serve as a dedication to the Second Summer of Love, the cultural phenomenon which took the United Kingdom by storm within the late 1980s, most predominately the summer of 1988. The cultural wave saw the rise in popularity of acid house, electronic dance music and the rave scene, fuelled by certain drug influences such as MDMA, the psychedelic and hedonistic scene was particularly taken upon by the nation’s youth. With these factors mixed together, this new musical philosophy embodied itself within the ideologies of freedom, pleasure and indulgence.

It is this sense of freedom in which ‘Flying Bus’ sets out to embody and along with a nostalgic wish for the past, Bez, DJ Doorly and Firouzeh are determined to take the listener back to their youth, full of fun and parties. Bez’s vocal line tells the story of the iconic Glastonbury stage Flying Bus, which is said to be the most rambunctious and often the last to close with parties going on until the early morning and the inspiration behind the song’s title

The accompanying music video also keeps within these cultural themes, the video sees Bez play a colourful bus conductor with DJ Doorly as the magical Bus’s driver. Again, staying within the theme of the 1980’s cultural and music scene, a passenger seemingly dragged down by the burdens of corporate life is taken to the legendary nightclub and music venue, The Hacienda. The Hacienda became a vital part of the dance and rave scene within the 1980s, situated in Manchester, the club became an important role within the career of Happy Mondays and many other bands involved within the genre. The new release’s music video sees Bez and DJ Doorly work with fellow Manchester artists and animators, Friend Party Studios.

The description affixed to the new release’s promo and its music video gives the video’s storyboard and the emotions it aims to conveys: “An office worker’s day gets off to a bad start after being stung by a psychedelic bee, but things get even more trippy when the Flying Bus pulls up. Bus conductor Bez and bus driver Doorly take our hapless hero on an adventure like no other, as he discovers a world of trippy visuals and pure party excess, ending up on the dancefloor of the iconic Manchester club The Haçienda. There’s only one thing to do: free your mind and take a one-way ticket on the Flying Bus!”

The Bolton born cultural personality has provided the following statement concerning his recent collaboration, reinforcing the song’s musical and lyrical themes. “It was a brilliant work trip to Ibiza to collaborate with Doorly at his studio that created this tune, My Flying Bus stage at Glastonbury is really special to me and a great hangout for the hardcore party people. I’ve been missing it so much and this track conjures up that Flying Bus magic. The song is about that freedom you feel when you’re gathered with like-minded people. This is the first vocal track I’ve ever brought out and I’m nervous and excited at the same time. I hope people will get ‘on the bus’ and enjoy it, get lost in a moment in time, that’s the whole vibe!”

DJ Doorly has also spoken about the experience working with Bez and what fans can expect next from the duo. “Writing a track together with the legend Bez was a hell of a lot of fun, not sure if you’ve met him but he’s a bit of a character, We really bonded over our shared love for the transatlantic Acid House movement from the late 80s/early 90s. Our aim was to bring a slice of that magic coming out of Chicago and Manchester around that time, with a celebration of Bez’s bonkers Flying Bus party at Glastonbury. It all came together and it’s a real pleasure to have Bez on my Reptile Dysfunction label, you can expect more from us both this year.”

As well as the promise for even more material, Bez and DJ Doorly have been confirmed to embark on a tour jammed full of dates this Summer. Fans can now also catch Bez on YouTube, since the lockdown this year the performer has started a new career path as a fitness advisor. His courses and workshops can be found as online fitness videos on the channel Spoke TV, entitled ‘Get Buzzin’ With Bez‘.

Smith announced her latest single, ‘Gone’, last week and teased ‘something special’ due to be released on 14 May 2021. The ‘something special is now thought to be referring to her upcoming project, ‘Be Right Back.’ The eight-track project will be her first for nearly two years, although the 23-year-old assured it is not a replacement for an album, she explained: “It’s called be right back because it’s just something I want my fans to have right now, this isn’t an album, and these songs wouldn’t have made it. If I needed to make these songs, then someone needed to hear them too.”
