Few bands feel to have captured the moment quite as strongly as New York’s Geese. Ever since the release of ‘Taxes’ as a lead single from their critically acclaimed album ‘Getting Killed’ the band has seen explosive success and growth with no sign of slowing down. So much so that it has led to a litany of think pieces and articles claiming the band to be the success story of new age industry advertising and marketing campaigns rather than authentic growth; leading to some detractors referring to Geese as no more than a marketing psyop. Regardless of the validity of such claims it is clear that no one, not even their biggest haters, can stop talking about Geese. This was reflected when during the band’s original UK tour announcement for Kentish Town, they not only had to upgrade to Eventim Apollo; they also added two dates for east London’s iconic venue the Troxy, which sold out immediately.

The excitement for these shows was palpable, with flurries of posts in the months leading up of fans asking for spare tickets or desperately looking to score cheap tickets as resale prices racked up to over 10x the original face value. Fans poured into Stepney from all over the world to see the sold out shows, with some travelling from Europe and others even as far as Australia and Taiwan. A perfect example of the fan excitement and commitment was one fan, who appears as @maarcjan on Instagram, who designed and gave out posters to the first 100 in line for the show. Whom at the end of night two was rightfully personally thanked by Geese bassist Dominic DiGesu and was handed the set-list of the show.

Night one of the two-show stint featured a standard setlist for Geese at this point of their tour, with a bonus of the rare feature of ‘Undoer’ from their previous project ‘3D Country’. Frontman Cameron Winter played the Oasis cover of ‘Help’ by the Beatles through his phone during ‘2122’ which has evolved into a staple portion of the show; often dedicated to a short cover of a track before devolving back into the chaotic chorus of the song. Check out the full set-list for the night below:

‘Husbands’
‘2122’ (Featuring Oasis’ cover of ‘Help’ by the Beatles)
‘100 Horses’
‘Getting Killed’
‘Half Real’
‘Undoer’
‘Crusades’
‘Gravity Blues’
‘Cobra’
‘Cowboy Nudes’
‘I See Myself’
‘Bow Down’
‘Au Pays du Cocaine’
‘Taxes’
Encore: ‘Trinidad’

On the contrary night two featured a wildly different set-list, a great bonus for those fortunate enough to catch both nights. Skipping out on usual mainstays ‘Husbands’ and ‘Half Real’ from the tour’s namesake album ‘Getting Killed’ in favour of ‘Rain Dance’ and ‘Disco’ from their debut album ‘Projector’. Both of which had only been played once before on this year of the tour in Glasgow. As well as the infrequently featured ‘Space Race’ from their 2023 EP ‘4D Country’. They also performed a fragment of ‘Up The Junction’ by legendary east London local band Squeeze during their breakdown in the middle of ‘2122’. Check out the full set-list for the night below:

‘Long Island City Here I Come’
‘Getting Killed’
‘Islands of Men’
‘Space Race’
‘2122’ (Featuring a fragment of ‘Up the Junction’ by Squeeze)
‘Crusades’
‘Cowboy Nudes’
‘100 Horses’
‘Rain Dance’
‘Disco’
‘Cobra’
‘Bow Down’
‘Au Pays du Cocaine’
‘Taxes’
Encore: ‘Trinidad’

These nights followed a plethora of shows and huge festival appearances, such as Reading and Leeds, from Geese throughout the UK. Marking the last stops of the UK and EU tour before they finished the leg as the secret headliner for End of Road festival on the 3rd of September

The band, whose name translates to ‘The Answer’ in Afrikaans, blends elements of hip-hop, electronic music, and performance art. They emerged as a distinctive and controversial act within the global music scene. Their music videos and performances often incorporate references that resonate internationally, including within the UK.

Die Antwoord were supported by LIL 2HOOD, also known as FLA$H, a rising producer from Queens, New York, who is known for her unique beats that blend dark, techno, and hip-hop influences. The duo was also joined by DJ Hi-Tek, a key figure in the group, serving as the group’s enigmatic producer. Although his true identity remains somewhat ambiguous, he is credited with creating the distinctive electronic beats and soundscapes that form the backbone of Die Antwoord’s music. At Troxy, the band opened with their 2012 track ‘Fatty Boom Boom‘ from their second studio album, ‘Ten$ion‘. The setlist included most of their older popular releases such as ‘Baby’s On Fire‘, ‘Ugly Boy‘, ‘Daddy‘, and ‘I Fink U Freeky‘.

The band also performed their new single, ‘Pokémon’, released in September 2024. It is speculated to be part of their sixth studio album, ‘Uit De Hemel Gevallen’ ( ‘Fallen from Heaven’), which could be released at the end of 2024. No other new or unreleased songs were performed last night, and the new era remains somewhat of a mystery as the band recently started fresh on their social media. Die Antwoord, who are known for their edgy and provocative style, have been embroiled in multiple controversies throughout their career. These controversies span allegations of cultural appropriation, homophobia, offensive behaviour, and legal issues. Ahead of the release of their new album, the band has recently been addressing certain allegations. “They call us homophobic, but how can we be homophobic if DJ Hi-Tek is homosexual?”, the frontman of the group, Ninja, said on stage yesterday. The band also commented on this in their 2024 documentary ‘ZEF: The Story of Die Antwoord’.

It seems the duo has a bigger fandom in other European countries, predominantly in Germany, hence the tour’s four German dates. Yet the band delivered a well-loved, high-energy performance last night similar to their previous London successes, specifically at the Brixton Academy. Their daughter Sixteen Jones also made an appearance.
