The Platinum selling post-industrial rock pioneers Filter have released ‘Obliteration‘, a new single taken from their upcoming album The Algorithm. In an Instagram post Richard Patrick, the bands frontman and the T-1000’s little brother, enthusiastically announced the new songs debut, expressing that he was “psyched to finally reveal our new single“. Filter came to be in 1993 when, whilst taking a break from touring with Nine Inch Nails as the bands live guitarist, Patrick began making music of his own at the suggestion of one Trent Reznor.

Sonically ‘Obliteration‘ sounds reminiscent of the now iconic post-industrial anguish anthems Filter achieved infamy with in the mid 1990’s, ‘Hey Man Nice Shot‘ in particular. Released in 1995 ‘Hey Man Nice Shot‘ was penned in apparent admiration of disgraced American politician Budd Dwyer’s public suicide. The ominous ode became one of the bands signature drone/dirge rock dittys, peaking at number 76 on the US charts.

In addition to the new single the band also simultaneously released an animated audio visual accompaniment depicting a post-apocalyptic mall goth girl pottering about what appears to be the bombed out husk of Hollywood. Having been atomically annihilated (or should I say obliterated?) the pixie-esque girl emerges from the underground clutching a cardboard. Whats in the box I here you ask? Watch the video below and find out:

The Algorithm was originally conceived way back in 2018 as a sequel to the bands grind-guitar debut disc Short Bus, when unbeknownst to either of them singer, Richard Patrick and Filters ex-guitar player Brian Liesegang both attended the same Veruca Salt concert. After being called out mid-performance by front woman Louise Post the pair were inspired to bury the hatchet and get back into the studio for the first time since 1995.

However, the recording project, tentatively titled Rebus, soon changed course after the collapse of the online crowdfunding platform PledgeMusic through which the duo sought to fund the album via fan donations. Liesegang once again parted ways but undeterred by this series of unfortunate events the Patrick continued to work on the album, now known as They’ve Got Us Where They Want Us, Right at Each Others Throats before changing his mind and renaming the album Murica in 2020 upon releasing the single ‘Thoughts and Prayers‘ before U-turning and swapping the name back to the former.

On May 5th 2023, after a sporadic spree of single releases Patrick finally announced that the album would now be called The Algorithm and is scheduled for release on 25th of August 2023.

You can pre-order The Algorithm via this link: https://orcd.co/filter-the-algorithm

Nine Inch Nails today announce the support acts for their dates at Cornwall’s Eden Project in June. British NIN spinoff Nitzer Ebb will support on June 17th and indie/electro/pop-star Yves Tumor joins the bill for the sold-out show on June 18th.

Nine Inch Nails will bring their ferocious show to the extraordinary venue for these unmissable shows, set within the stunning grounds of the Eden Project, which has seen past performances from the likes of Pulp, PJ Harvey, Muse, Oasis and Queens Of The Stone Age. In other news, Nine Inch Nails was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, headquartered in Cleveland, alongside Depeche Mode, The Doobie Brothers, Whitney Houston, The Notorious B.I.G., and T. Rex back in 2020.

NIN bring their show, hailed by The Guardian as ‘saw toothed,‘ with the ‘ferocity of a Rottweiler gnashing through its muzzle, bathed in exquisite monochromatic lighting and smoke’ to the lush grounds described by The Times, according to a press release as ‘Magical…half Glastonbury, half Glydnenbourne’ and of which the Evening Standard wrote ‘The nearest you can get to watching a gig on the moon.’ It seems that the band are keeping up their tradition of playing only the grandest, most elaborate venues whenever they come to the UK. Their last show at The Royal Albert Hall saw them go through a career-spanning setlist of 23 songs, anticipation for the Eden Project shows couldn’t be higher.

NIN has also announced an 11 date US tour to accompany the Eden Project dates. Their first tour since 2018, will take them around North America to the likes of Denver’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre, the Cleveland Blossom Music Center, and a few festival appearances like Primavera Sound LA, and Atlanta’s Shaky Knees Festival. While this announcement came with no other UK dates or any new music since the band’s double album (Ghosts V: Together and Ghosts VI: Locusts), both may well be on the horizon quite soon. Who knows? If you’re desperate for some new Trent Reznor music though, you may be (weirdly enough) swayed by the most recent Halsey album, If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power. Reznor lent a producing hand to the album, and between this and Halsey’s standard empowering sound, the project exceeded the expectations of many.

Nine Inch Nails, the Trent Reznor-fronted group described as “trailblazers in melding industrial noise with rock“, are returning to the stage after a four-year absence, and they’ll be closer than you think. Despite most of their energies being spent on a long-winded US tour, which will be taking most of their diary space from April till September, they’ve managed to fit in two dates this June for their UK fans as well.

The group will be playing at the Eden Project in Cornwall, with two sessions set for June 17th and 18th, and they won’t be alone. Other artists due for some summer gigs include Britpop icon Noel Gallagher (appearing June 15th), Canadian superstar Bryan Adams (June 29th) and even classic sixties singer Diana Ross will be making an appearance. But if that seems to have wetted the event’s doomer-gloom appeal for you, My Chemical Romance should make up for it, with their two dates set for May 16th-17th.

It should be a good one, or at least that’s what the reviews say. According to a Guardian review back in 2018, they’ve still got it, describing their performance as “saw toothed,‘ with the ‘ferocity of a Rottweiler gnashing through its muzzle, bathed in exquisite monochromatic lighting and smoke“. And the Eden Project isn’t too shabby a place either, with the Evening Standard assuring us that it’s “the nearest you can get to watching a gig on the moon”.

To be fair to Reznor, he hasn’t been bone idle the last four years. Apart from releasing two positively received albums with Nine Inch Nails back in 2020, he and fellow NIN member Atticus Ross have also been working with American pop-star Halsey, helping on her album If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power. And the awards just keep coming. Nine Inch Nails got inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame back in 2020, and along with that Reznor/Ross even have another Academy Award to put on their shelves, right next to their trophy for 2010’s The Social Network. This time it comes from the soundtrack to the 2020 Pixar movie Soul.
If you’re interested in seeing Reznor & co. perform live, pre-sale tickets were available yesterday. However, if you’re an Eden Project Member, you haven’t missed all your perks, with special access to tickets arriving tomorrow from 10 am. After that, the general sale starts this Friday at 10 am. If you’re interested in more details, you can look here. If you fancy a trip to America just to see them, look here. Otherwise, let’s just hope these last four years haven’t whetted their appetite for the raucous performances that made them such a compelling name in the past.

The nominations for the 2021 Golden Globe Awards, coming February 28th, have arrived. Among the many star-studded nominations, Britain’s own Atticus Ross has joined Trent Reznor for the Best Score in a Motion Picture category. Ross was nominated in this category twice for his collaborative work with Reznor on the two films Mank and Soul, which Jon Batiste was greatly involved in the writing process as well.

This is not the first major award Ross has been nominated for in his long-running music career, he has also won in many categories he has been nominated in. In 2010, he joined Reznor to win the Academy Award for Best Original Score for their work on The Social Network. In 2013, they teamed up once again to win the Grammy for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media for their work on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Ross and Reznor have a long history of producing award-winning scores and soundtracks since their collaborations began in 2005 when Ross worked with Reznor’s band Nine Inch Nails. Ross and Reznor developed a kinship through their collaborations and eventually Ross was invited to become an official member in 2016.

Congratulations to Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, and Jon Batiste on their #GoldenGlobes nomination for Best Original Score! pic.twitter.com/yuqAj3VYHM

Ross has been working in film and television scoring for more than a decade when he first worked on the soundtrack for the television series Touching Evil with his wife Claudia Sarne and his brother Leopold Ross. He won his first award for a score, when in 2010 he was given the BMI award and the World Soundtrack Award for his work on The Book of Eli.

This year Ross and Reznor face a varied and talent group of opponents for the award, Other nominees in the Best Score Motion Picture category include Alezandre Desplat, Ludwig Goransson, James Neton Howard, The United States vs. Billie Holiday, Judas and the Black Messiah, The Trial of the Chicago 7, The Life Ahead, One Night in Miami. Mank and Soul will be going up against The Midnight Sky and Tenet among many others.

This year’s Golden Globe Awards will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler this February. 28th, originally scheduled for January but delayed because of saftey concerns surrounding the Covid19 global pandemic. The show will be live-streamed from The Hilton in Beverly Hills, California and will be aired a 8 p.m. Eastern US time on the American network NBC.

In honour of what would be David Bowie’s 74th birthday his former pianist and close friend, Mike Garson, has planned a Covid-19 friendly tribute on January 8th, 2021. Today it was announced that Trent Reznor, of Nine Inch Nails, along with The Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan have been recruited to perform during the upcoming livestream event.

Corgan and Reznor are the latest acts set to play the Bowie birthday-show; among the long line-up are big names including actor Gary Oldman as well as musicians such as Gavin Rossdale, Macy Gray, Judith Hill, Perry Farrell and many more. The musicians will each give their own rendition of one or more of the songs off Bowie’s extensive discography and it is expected they will bring unique and genre-spanning covers to the live-show.

The event will take place near the 5th anniversary of Bowie’s death and will follow the new-release of the album Metrobolist which is set to be released next month. This year, previously unreleased live-show recordings and re-cut songs, such as The Man Who Sold The World, have been given to fans and even last month saw a limited edition of the 1975 album Young Americans.

Bowie has had great success from posthumous releases including winning multiple Grammys, selling over 5 million records in just the 2 years following his death and being named Rolling Stone’s ‘Greatest Rock Star Ever’. This upcoming live-stream concert will pay tribute to fallen star with collaborations and arrangements of his music spanning all the decades of his career.

Producers of the live-stream event include Kerry Brown, Stacey Sher and Bowie’s long-time producer Tony Visconti, and they are calling it ‘A Bowie Celebration: Just for one day!’. Past band-members and old collaborators are banning together in an alumni fashion to play as one in honour of Bowie.

Nine Inch Nails have revealed the members of their latest touring incarnation, in time for the band’s string of summer shows.

The performances will mark he first time that Trent Reznor and co. have taken to the stage in over three years, and the band are set to perform at the FYF Fest in Los Angeles, which runs from July 21 to 23, as well as a gig a week later at the Panorama Music Festival in New York, which runs from July 28 to 30.

The touring line-up was confirmed in the Tweet from the band’s official account, which can be seen below. The post revealed that the frequently-altered NIN line-up will include Robin Finck (guitarist), Alessandro Cortini (keyboards/electronics), and Ilan Rubin (drummer), accompanying Reznor. Also joining will be Atticus Ross, who won an Oscar with Reznor for their work on 2011’s The Social Network, will also be part of the live arrangement, having recently become an official member of the band.

pic.twitter.com/jv0odeceAL

The announcement of live shows will serve as further encouragement for NIN fans, who were surprised by odd envelopes from the band earlier this month, which contained a strange black powder. The packages accompanied the purchased of the band’s new EP Not The Actual Events from their website, which contained a warning that the venelope’s contents “may contain subversive elements that produce feelings of euphoria and [which] may be harmful and unsettling to the consumer.”

The EP dropped at the end of 2016, but Reznor also spoke to Beats 1’s Zane Lowe, to clarify that he plans two release “two new major” projects over the course of 2017. Renor also confirmed that both of these projects would fall “under the Nine Inch Nails umbrella”, rather than being any sort of solo record. NIN’s last album to date was 2013’s Hesitation Marks.

Trent Reznor sat down with the Daily Beast this week to voice his opinions on Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump. Reznor is no stranger to speaking his mind, personally and politically, in both his music and in the media. However, past feuds with the likes of Fred Durst and Courtney Love have fallen by the wayside, as Reznor voiced his opinions on the American presidential candidates.

The Oscar-Winning composer has teamed up with Leonard DiCaprio and post-rock icons Mogwai, to work on global warming documentary Before the Flood, and was outraged by the topic being “so politicised—and the repulsive climate that’s emerged […] it’s alarming to see society devolve in a lot of ways” as a result of Trump’s widened mainstream exposure.

Reznor discussed the difficulty he and the film’s creators- including director Fisher Stevens and executive producer Martin Scorsese- faced in convincing and publicising the consequences of climate change, blaming “the fossil-fuel industry and the Republican agenda” claiming that they had “done a masterful job of polarising elements of the country” and rounding on their elected leader.

Reznor did initially concede that he was “entertained during the Republican debates” earlier in the political cycle, but that the entire situation was now “absurd” and “stopped being funny months ago.” Reznor also disclosed his long-term fears for the political landscape of America, even if he doesn’t win the election, due to the mogul-turned-presidential candidate’s “awful lot of very energised followers” and worrying that the more environmentally conscious Hilary Clinton would be “walking into a terrible situation.” Due to the seemingly unshakeable loyalty that Trump’s followers have to him.

The Nine Inch Nails frontman joins an increasingly long list of musicians to speak out against Trump, with the likes of Franz Ferdinand and Death Cab for Cutie, being driven to release their own protest songs, as part of the ’30 Days, 30 Songs’ project, releasing a new protest song against Trump every day for a month.

As well as Before the Flood, Reznor is also confirmed to be scoring Boston Marathon Bombing biopic Patriots Day, with long term musical collaborator Atticus Ross. With regard to the rumoured recording of a ninth Nine Inch Nails album “I am working on music right now, that’s all I can say!” This lack of confirmation may disappoint some expectant fans, following the claims made by Reznor on Twitter in late 2015.

New NIN coming in 2016. Other stuff, too.

— Trent Reznor (@trent_reznor) December 18, 2015

This was the first murmur of new NIN work since 2013’s Hesitation Marks, but ‘other stuff’ could also allude to the aforementioned film scores, or even a potential new How to Destroy Angels project, featuring Reznor’s wife Mariqueen Maandig, as well as Ross and frequent collaborator Rob Sheridan.
