Canadian duo Angine de Poitrine have stolen the spotlight in recent weeks for their unorthodox musical noodlings and absurd costumes. With their new album ‘ Vol. II’ releasing this Friday, the band have announced a European run of dates which will see them visit the UK twice this year.

The band came about in Quebec in 2019, with the two members made immediately distinctive by way of strange stage names, and their donning of unusual black and white costumes and Papier-mâché headpieces. The pair consist of singer and guitarist Khn de Poitrine and drummer and vocalist Klek de Poitrine. Their fuzzy, chaotic experimental rock is defined by Khn’s use of a double-necked microtonal electric guitar and bass, which expands the range of musical notes beyond a typical instrument. This lends the riffs a sound unheard of in most western music, which can appear almost accidental on the first listen. When coupled with Klek’s erratic jazz drum beats, and the duo’s indecipherable alien vocals, the music is utterly out of this world.

After releasing debut album ‘Vol. 1’ in 2024, the band became a viral sensation earlier this year. Their live performance for radio station KEXP in February captured attention in all the desired ways, with viewers enraptured by the four meandering tracks and the unique attires. The set has been viewed nearly 6.5 million times on Youtube, with Angine de Poitrine fast-becoming one of the year’s biggest pop-culture phenomenons and their image already considered iconic.

Second album ‘Vol. II’ was announced on the 18th of March, promising to expand the sound of their first release to wilder, weirder heights. Three of the tracks, ‘Sarniezz’, ‘Mata Zyklek’ and most-recent single ‘Fabienk’ can be heard in the KEXP performance, but the album includes three more items – ‘Utzp’, ‘Yor Zarad’ and ‘Angor’. Due to the extended run-time of their progressive-styled jams, the full six tracks clock in at over 35 minutes of music.

Radiohead have seen their 1997 single ‘Let Down’ enter the charts, 28 years years after it’s release.

Irrespective of your stance on the current social media landscape, and TikTok in particular, it is undeniable that these platforms are the reason we are seeing so many songs from decades gone by get an untimely commercial revival, and Radiohead are the latest group to reap the rewards of this.

Released in 1997 on Radiohead’s third studio album, OK Computer, ‘Let Down’ received only one chart position at the time, the 29th position on the US Billboard ‘Modern Rock Tracks’ chart.

That was until the song was used in a vast number of videos on social media, catapulting the song’s streaming figures through the roof and earning the number eighty five spot in this week’s UK Singles Chart – one of the charts the song failed to appear on previously.

♬ Let Down – Radiohead

That’s not the only success ‘Let Down’ saw this week; notably, the single also reached number 5 on the ‘UK Indie Charts’, 83 on the ‘Canadian Hot 100’ and 18 on US Billboard’s ‘Bubbling Under Hot 100’, meaning that the band narrowly missed out on a place in the prestigious ‘Hot 100’.

Despite the single hitting charts across the world, ‘Let Down’ has been a song Radiohead have typically shied away from performing live. The multi-track recording techniques and heavy layering used in the studio make it difficult for singer, Thom Yorke, to perpetuate the soaring harmonies heard on the recorded version. A single performance in 2006 was all fans had to go on until the band decided to bring the song out of retirement on their 2016, A Moon Shaped Pool, tour.

Many different artists have witnessed a surge in popularity for specific songs within their discography, as a result of social media trends. One of the most dramatic examples in recent years was Kate Bush’s 1985 hit ‘Running Up That Hill’, which saw an enormous spike in popularity when it was used in TV series ‘Stranger Things’, which, consequently, lead to a myriad of social media posts containing the song. The song grew in popularity so much so that it surpassed many of its previous chart positions.

Ivorian Doll is the latest rapper to appear on GRM Daily’s popular Youtube series Daily Duppy. The episode, which aired on the 11th of October, features the ‘Rumours,’ rapper deliver exclusive bars with production from Madara Beatz, KidSpyral & JayBenJay.

The video quickly became a diss track where Ivorian Doll (IVD) called out ‘first to be unemployed,’ Youtube blogger Miss Rfabulous, who quickly responded on the 12th with her own ‘IVD Diss Track,‘ which is currently streaming as number one on trending. Ivorian Doll shot to popularity as a rapper six months ago when she released her breakthrough track ‘Rumours.‘

According to PRS for Music, ‘2020 has seen a cultural shift with Black British music being embraced by the masses more than ever before.’ Ivorian Doll is a perfect example of this shift and also a unique figure in as a female artist in a genre which is largely male dominated. PRS for Music describes her as ‘the First Lady of UK Drill.’

Ivorian Doll describes herself as ‘an unknown artist reaching for global domination.’ She has demonstrated her skill as a live performer through her performance at the GRM Daily Rated Awards 2020 where she delivered and explosive version of her song ‘Bodybag,’ the follow up to ‘Rumours.’ With her breakthrough track no having reached 4.5 million views on Youtube, Ivorian Doll certainly has the option to make it very big. ‘Bodybag,’ has already reached 844k views in the two months since its release and fans eagerly await each new release.

As well as releasing her own tracks, Ivorian Doll has also been very active in collaborating with other artists on the scene. She featured on Br3nya’s latest track ‘Bezerk,’ which was uploaded to Youtube on the 8th of October and saw the two team up as a duo after sharing the stage together at the GRM Daily Rated Awards. According to Wonderland Magazine Ivorian Doll and Br3nya’s track is ‘putting female drill on the map,’ and they hope that ‘that this won’t the last time we hear these two on a track together.’

Another recent collaboration for Ivorian Doll has been with Tottenham rapper Headie One who released his album, ‘Edna,’ last Friday. She features on the track ‘F U Pay Me,’ where she is given her own verse and then joins in with the Headie One on the following chorus. This appearance appears to solidify Ivorian Doll’s status on the scene as the album reads like a who’s who in rap with other big names featured include Grime’s Stormzy and Skepta, Manchester rapper Aitch and more.

According to The Line of Best Fit ‘this year has been a record-breaking one for women in rap, with artists like Megan Thee Stallion, Saweetie and Rico Nasty topping charts,‘ and Ivorian Doll is no exception. She looks up to Niki Minaj in the way she behaves on stage and her image and there is no doubt that Doll can bring the bars.
