Having been discussed publicly by co-director and Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello for some time now, and having been announced as a feature at the Berlin International Film Festival, a clip from the new Judas Priest documentary, ‘The Ballad of Judas Priest’, has finally surfaced.

The clip showcases a conversation about Priest’s enduring classic ‘Breaking the Law’ between leading figures in rock, including Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, Anthrax’s Scott Ian, Morello and others. It also features Priest vocalist Rob Halford’s thoughts about the track, calling it a “revolution song” about the strife of the industrial working class at the height of Thatcherism.

Morello himself in discussing the film has linked the documentary to the political situation referenced in the clip, declaring in Berlin that “the band’s existence is very political”, as quoted in Deadline. While never explicitly discussing political themes, issues or figures, the song describes the dehumanising feeling of unemployment in early 1980s Britain, when joblessness reached over 3 million. Halford added that “I try my best to avoid that type of explicit message, but it’s there. It’s there, and that gives me some comfort that I’m not letting myself down consciously on subjects that mean a lot to me and piss me off.”

The film, the first that Morello has directed, will be playing at the Berlin festival until February 22, and little has been disclosed about a wider release in the months following.

Co-directing is Sam Dunn, who, with his company Banger Films, has been active for over two decades, releasing the widely-acclaimed 2004 film ‘Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey’, the 2009 tour documentary/concert film ‘Iron Maiden: Flight 666’ and 2014’s ‘Super Duper Alice Cooper’. Dunn also directed the comprehensive ‘Metal Evolution’, a documentary series detailing the birth and transformation of metal since the days of Black Sabbath.

Discussing the Priest documentary, Dunn said that he is “beyond excited for all our German metalheads to get the first look”, Morello declaring that he is “so excited for the world to see this amazing project”.

As well as a detailed look at the music, the film will also document the ‘Metal Gods’ in their rise to international headline status, Halford’s journey with drugs and his sexuality, and where Priest stand today.

The last few years have been eventful for the Black Country’s riff masters, releasing their latest album Invincible Shield in 2024 to an almost uniformly positive reception and touring extensively behind it, going to number 2 in the UK Album chart and number 1 in the UK and US rock charts, as well as number 1 in Germany, Austria and Sweden among others. Priest will headline Bloodstock later this year alongside Russian deathcore juggernaut Slaughter to Prevail and American groove metallers Lamb of God, as well as fellow British metal legends Saxon.

Popular British-Zulu drum prodigy Nandi Bushell has given her rock-infused take on yet another song, Ed Sheeran and Bring Me The Horizon’s updated version of “Bad Habits“. After Sheeran and BMTH performed an alternative version of the track at the 2022 BRIT Awards’ opening ceremony, it seems Bushell just had to have her own say on the matter.

Taking to social media, she explained that “I am #LOVING the collaboration between @edsheeran and @bmthofficial! Ed is a local #hero in #ipswich where I live! When I heard one of my favourite bands #BMTH, was collaborating with my local hero, I had to give their tune a go!“.

— Nandi Bushell (@Nandi_Bushell) February 18, 2022

Bushell, who at the shy age of eleven already has hundreds of thousands of social media followers, has made a name for herself through her eccentric covers of classic rock songs. In the past she’s covered the likes of “Gimme Shelter“ by The Rolling Stones, Billie Eilish’s “Happier Than Ever“ and even Fatboy Slim’s “Right Here, Right Now“.

If you want to read more about her background and what she was getting up to in the new year, you can look here. Either way, she has many admirers in the industry, even among the classic rock elite. The likes of Ringo Starr and Queen’s Roger Taylor have done collaborations with her in the past.

However, it seems she’s determined to use her fame for a good cause as of now. Her 2021 original song “The Children Will Rise Up!“, a collaboration with Tom Morello’s son Roman, sought to raise awareness about climate change. And she’s recently worked with The Miraculous Love Kids, a charity organisation helping to teach music to Afghan girls, raising awareness of the difficulties they face living in a country recently taken over by the Taliban.

To help out, Bushell and a number of other musicians released the charity single “God Help Us All“, which was written by Tom Morello. Lanny Cordola, the organisation’s founder, was obviously pleased by all the support, admitting that “It has been a hellish past six months trying to evacuate and relocate the girls and their families …. Tom Morello’s soul hymn perfectly encapsulates this feeling …. The convergence of all these talents truly shows how music can unify artists from different idioms and cultures to lend their voices to the vulnerable, marginalised suffering souls of the Earth.”

If you’re interested in hearing more from Bushell and the songs lucky enough to get her attention, you can follow her on Twitter and Instagram.

Last month saw IDLES release their brand-new album CRAWLER – their fourth in as many years and the follow-up to their first No. 1, 2019’s Ultra Mono. Met with widespread acclaim, the album was produced by IDLES’ Mark Bowen alongside Kenny Beats and marked a real turning point in the evolution of the band, adding a whole new dimension to the music the Bristolian five-piece make.

Following the soul-soaked comeback single “The Beachland Ballroom” and the abrasive “Car Crash” today they release a new single “When The Lights Come On”. With its motorik rhythm and propulsive bass lines, the track harks back to the days when frontman and lyricist Joe Talbot would DJ in Bristol clubs until the early hours, chasing the party into the night only to be confronted by the harsh realities that turning the lights on can expose. See Below the Lee Kiernan directed Video.

The band will also embark on a sold-out (bar one date) European tour in the new year. With 4 nights at London’s Brixton Academy, 3 at Manchester’s Victoria Warehouse, and 3 at Glasgow’s iconic Barrowland Ballroom, the tour is set to delight fans with their signature socially aware take on manic aggression. See full ticket information here.

Clearly bored of having downtime, the band have also taken on an excess of extra-curricular activities including remixing St. Vincent’s track “Pay Your Way in Pain”, and working with literal guitar legend Tom Morello (from Rage Against the Machine of course) on a track from his solo outing The Atlas Underground Flood, The Batchelor. They are even choosing to round out the year playing with The Strokes on New Year’s Eve at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.

The release of CRAWLER back in November was marked with a show at EartH in Hackney, London. IDLES were insistent on making this a show to remember, giving out records at the end of the show, inviting fans on stage, and clambering into the audience themselves to sing Christmas songs in the middle of November.

Regarding the new single, lead singer, Joe Talbot, explained, “When the lights come on. Our third offering from Crawler. A poem of light and sound exploring the cold light of day. Thank you x”.

All the dates to their 2022 tour are sold out, the only exception at the moment being the final Brixton Academy date, see below for more details.

From being a foreign student advisor at the Univ. of Illinois, to teaching in Kenya and supporting the anti-colonial movement there, to teaching African Studies and bringing a radical perspective to a white conservative high school for 30 yrs, to being a member of the Illinois Urban League and campaigning for civil rights, to helping homeless African American men get their GED at the Salvation Army, to telling anybody who came at our family with any racist garbage to go straight to hell, to arming me with pride & confidence, to being a lifelong proponent of racial justice and ruthless critic of racist police.

Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan has gifted their patient fans some good news today, with an update on the progress of the band’s long-anticipated new album. The group haven’t released a project in over ten years, which came in the form of 2006’s monstrous 10,000 Days.

The new album had initially been slated for a release in 2017, but faced severe delays. however Keenan has tweeted some detailed info on the new record’s recording process, revealing that guitarist Adam Jones (referred to in the tweet as AJ) was ‘deep’ into recording his guitars for the project.

Update- Scratch Vox tracked awhile ago. AJ deep in Guitars now. Final Vox after. Step back. Adjust. Mix. Adjust. Re-Adjust. Master. Adjust. Re-Adjust. Long Way 2 Go But Much Closer. #TOOL #2019

— Maynard J Keenan (@mjkeenan) September 10, 2018

Keenan’s tweet did seem cautious in regard to the album’s overall progress, but the tweet seemed to confirm that we can at last expect the project next year. This follows a previous update from the singer in February, suggesting that his “words & melodies” for the album were “100% done on all but 1″ of the album’s tracks.

Keenan has previously blamed the slow progress of the album on his bandmates’ indecisiveness. “I like to release records and write things a little more quickly than those guys like to write,” he said. “Their process is very analytical.” Keenan released new music with his other band A Perfect Circle earlier this year, titled Eat The Elephant, which garnered high praise among many.

In December 2017, Rage Against the Machine, Prophets of Rage, and former-Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello revealed that he had heard new music from the band. He shared an image of himself and the band on his Instagram page, writing “”Had the honour of being the first outsider to hear new #TOOL music today!!” describing what he had heard as “epic, majestic, symphonic, brutal, beautiful, tribal, mysterious, deep, sexy and VERY Tool.”
