Former Kasabian frontman Tom Meighan has announced his first festival date since his sacking from the band last year. Meighan parted ways with the band in 2020 after it was announced they had ordered him to leave the group. The main cause for the band’s decision was the charge against Meighan for the assault of his partner Vicki Ager. The rocker appeared to the Magistrates Court at Leicester on 7th July 2020 to face said charge of assault against his partner Ager and he pled guilty to one count of assault by beating and was sentenced to 200 hours of unpaid work.

The singer has since married Ager and relocated to Cornwall as well as releasing new music as a solo artist, most recently playing string of headline gigs, which included a show at at O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire. He is now set to headline Looe! Live Festival from September 16-18 alongside Lightning Seeds. Tickets for the festival are on sale now and you can view the full line-up below.

In an interview with Cornwall Live last December, Ager and Meighan described the incident as a “one-off” and a “drunken squabble” and the singer apologised once more. “We had too much to drink,” said Meighan. “I regret everything that happened that night – what I can remember of it. I don’t condone it – it’s horrific. I love my partner to pieces.” Despite the fact the bandmates haven’t seen each other since the rocker left the band he remains hopeful about a reunion with his former friends.

Last October, Meighan shared his debut solo single “Would You Mind”, writing to fans on his social media: “It’s no secret that I’ve been struggling for the last few years. Music is my therapy and I have have been recording some songs that I now feel ready to share.” The singer said that he decided to release the song as a free download due to the “amazing response” that his teaser of the single had on social media. “I didn’t plan on releasing this song until next year, but due to such an amazing response on social media, I have decided to make it available and free for anyone who wants to listen,”

His former band Kasabian, meanwhile are set to release their new album The Alchemist’s Euphoria in August which will be their first with Serge Pizzorno as frontman.

Yesterday it was announced that lead singer Tom Meighan would be leaving the band, this was widely reported on and had fans reeling from the news and rushing to support him. Today though, after appearing in court and pleading guilty to assaulting his former fiance, he has been sentenced to complete 200 hours of community service.

The court heard that on the night of the 9th of April a child called the police and when they arrived Meighan “smelt heavily of intoxicants” and Mrs Ager was “visibly upset” while Meighan was “aggressive and un-cooperative”. Mrs Ager suffered bruising to multiple parts of her body as well as reddening around her neck, which she confirmed to police was sustained through the attack.

The judge commented at the trial on the severity of the offence saying “I could send you to jail for this” and “it could be argued to be relatively serious.” This demonstrated how serious the trial was with Tom being threatened with jail time. It comes a day after he left the band and said he is going to “concentrate all his energies on getting his life back on track”.

Understandably, this news has been met with outrage from a lot of people. People are also taking to criticising the band on the way they have dealt with the departure of Meighan and the revelations that have been discovered today.

Previous to this week, Meighan had been with Kasabian for 23 years and he had seen it change from his small band with his mates to one of the biggest acts in English rock right now. Serge and the other two members, Chris Edwards and Ian Matthews, remain in the band. It is yet to be seen whether the band will continue as a three piece, hire a new singer or just call it a day. Serge already has a second project, in his solo outfit The S.L.P. It is yet to be seen if Kasabian will continue with their tour and record new music after COVID-19 goes.

In a move completely out of left field, talismanic lead singer Tom Meighan has taken time away from the Leicester band. This has been announced this morning and was posted in a short message on all the bands social medias and has left fans stunned. In the statement they said he “wants to concentrate all his energies on getting his life back on track”.

This has come so far out of the blue as only a few months ago he spoke about releasing solo material and even making a new Kasabian album. This goes to show how serious we now have to be about mental health and how quickly it can turn. Tom had previously opened up about his mental health issues saying “In every way, 2016 was great for Serge, great for Leicester City, shit for me”.

Tom Meighan is stepping down from Kasabian by mutual consent. Tom has struggled with personal issues that have affected his behaviour for quite some time and now wants to concentrate all his energies on getting his life back on track. We will not be commenting further.

— KasabianHQ (@KasabianHQ) July 6, 2020

Tom was one of two founding members of Kasabian and has seen it go from playing at his mates 18th birthday to headlining Glastonbury. He also achieved a lifelong dream of playing at Leicester City’s victory party after seeing almost the impossible when Leicester won the league.

Understandably fans are very shocked at this move as there has been nothing that would indicate this happening. But they have been supportive of Tom and hope that he is able to join back up with the band for their new material.

Tom has become synonymous with the band with some fans going as far as saying “No Kasabian without Tom”. Having seen the band grow since its inception, saying it would be a shame if he does not join back up with the rest of the band would be an understatement.

This year was shaping up to be a big year for Kasabian as they were booked to play a massive homecoming show in Leicester’s Victoria Park before it got cancelled due to Coronavirus. There was also talk of them getting back into the studio to record their seventh album, this was then confirmed by both Tom and Serge.

Last year we got to see what Kasabian would be like if it was just Sergio Pizzorno after he released his debut solo album under the pseudonym The SLP. Now it seems to be the band’s lead singer, Tom Meighan’s, turn as he has teased fans that we may be hearing solo material from him sometime soon.

In a new interview with Sky News, he has explained that during lockdown he has taken it as an opportunity to spend more time writing his own music. He is quoted as saying “I’m writing loads of music at the minute, we’ll see what happens”. This comes after the Leicester band took their first break after a six album run so Pizzorno could try his own music in which we got the album The SLP which featured the successful single “Favourite” which featured Little Simz.

But to Kasabian fans reading this, do not despair! He also confirmed that the band are not split up and they have no plans to in the near future either, in fact, the band were planning on working on their seventh album before Coronavirus brought everything to a stand still. So in the space of under two years we have Sergio solo work, Tom Meighan solo work in the pipes and news that Kasabian are working on a new album. All good news although they had pushed back their live shows.

We are very sad to announce that Kasabian’s Leicester Victoria Park Show on June 20th has been cancelled as a result of the current COVID -19 pandemic. pic.twitter.com/4kCrryyKJY

More recently the singer had released covers of “Imagine” and “Daydream Believer” in his own personal thank you to the workers of the NHS in keeping us afloat in these trying times. In the interview he did, Meighan explained that the songs he has written are very “autobiographical” and “heartbreaking”. I know that, personally, I am very interested in seeing his work and how he has managed to get his personal artistry across after hearing his counter-parts more experimental effort last year.

This comes as welcome news to fans of the band, as people have wanted to hear what Meighan has in his locker as Pizzorno is usually seen as the more musically inclined one out of the two of them. But as he has set no date or officially said if we will ever hear them, it is all just speculation as of yet but, all the while, still promising.
