The 1975’s Matty Healy mentioned collaborating with Charlie XCX back in August 2019, when he tweeted at the time: “Sent her a beat at like 5pm yesterday” –  Healy’s tweet began, “and woke up this morning to a HIT. A MONSTER TUNE!!” Then he added: “I’m prolific but she’s on some shit @charli_xcx”

Speaking to NME that year she said: “We sent some ideas back and forth, and I’m such a fan of him [Matty] and the band. They just get it, and they don’t get it at the same time, which I think is the best way to make music. And I think he’s such a smart lyricist, it’s just very smart and also fun, and I feel like they really love pop music. And I love that, and I’m so inspired by that energy and that uniqueness. So yeah, I don’t know what’s going on. But I really admire their song writing, so hopefully something will come of it.”

It finally happened. Further information about the track had been shared today (1st March) by Matty Healy and the Dirty Hit Label. They disclosed the title, release date and interesting cover of new single –  “Spinning” that will come out on the 4th March:

Charli XCX released her sixth now studio album “How I’m Feeling” last year, all recorded during COVID-19 lockdown. It landed on number 24 on the best albums list of 2020 by NME. Frontman of 1975’s Matty Healy and his band’s latest album – “Notes on A Conditional Form” took Number 43 on NME’s best albums of the 2020. The band announced cancellation of  their entire tour for this year, however confirmed working on a new album. No Rome on the contrary, has released two singles in 2020 : “1:45AM” with Brockhampton’s Bearface and “Hurry Home” featuring Beabadoobee and Jay Som. No Rome and The 1975 collaborated together in 2018 on “Narcissist”.

Healy’s indication towards his other music guise was displayed through social media. The Chocolate singer set up a brand new Instagram account for Drive Like I Do, a move executed by artists who wish to tease fans with the idea of new music. Healy took to his official Instagram, which is posed under the moniker Truman Black, to share a throwback photo of the band, which again is a homage towards Drive Like I Do. 

The Mancunian born artist posted a photograph of himself rocking out fifteen years ago, which received over 149,000 likes from devoted fans. Healy wrote the caption: “Drive Like I Do – Live in Newcastle 2005”. When one devoted fan commented: “we want a new DLID record”, the Girls hitmaker simply responded “ok”.

Following this interaction, Healy sent the link to the fan leading to a brand new Instagram page dedicated to Drive Like I Do.  The new account has two photos only – some vintage looking snaps of a backyard basketball hoop, and an action shot of a football match.

The first post was captioned with an ambiguous caption: “That Wasn’t Even The Craziest Thing That Went Down”, which could possibly be a title of some new Drive Like I Do material. Already, the mysterious account has obtained over 13,000 followers.

Earlier this year, Healy spoke on evolving the sound of Drive Like I Do. The 1975 frontman revealed that he was working on remastering some old Drive Like I Do songs. Healy said: “I’m getting the old stuff remastered and I’m basically going to put out the first album, the album that never was released.”

When speaking on rejuvenating his old band, Healy confirmed that “We will follow that up with a new album. There’s so much Drive Like I Do stuff that was great that there’s not even demos of, so I’m going to record those songs and put them out with the two records that do kind of technically exist in the world.”

Healy also spoke out on his decision to quit social media, saying it has made him a “much better person”. Healy elaborated on the pressures of social media, saying: “It’s such a weird paradox. Sometimes I get it right but sometimes I look like a t*** and that makes my work worse. I found myself asking myself ‘for what?’ some attention in the moment? A short cut towards feeling good about myself?”

The latest album from The 1975 is Notes On A Conditional Form, the fourth studio album from the indie-pop band. The 1975 released the critically acclaimed album on May 22nd. Notes On A Conditional Form features songs such as The Birthday Party, Yeah I Know, Streaming and Roadkill.

A socially distanced performance, Healy played an acoustic reworking of the cherished track from his home. This offering comes as a lovely surprise from The 1975 frontman Healy, who has been noticeably absent from the public eye in recent months.

Taking to social media last night, Healy announced his virtual homecoming by posting his Be My Mistake cover to Instagram. Dressed in a shirt and tie, Healy takes a quick puff from his cigarette before starting the cover. The beautiful acoustic cover to Be My Mistake can be watched in full below.

Fans were clearly delighted at this surprise share, as the post has received over 280,000 likes since last night. Numerous fans left encouraging comments on the post, one fan writing “Hope you are doing okay Matty, we love you.”

From the moment he plucks the song’s opening notes, the emotivity of Healy’s cover is unignorable. With a soft, delicate voice, Healy sings the emotional song’s opening verse: “Be my mistake/Turn out the light/She bought me those jeans/The ones that you like”

As the Chocolate singer continues on, the stripped-back performance enhances the poignancy of the already solemn song. After the cover concludes, Healy ends the post with a wave to his worldwide fanbase, to the camera, saying bashfully  “Hello, miss you, love you.”

This fresh Be My Mistake cover follows Healy taking part in Season 2 of Art Zoom. Curated by Google Arts & Culture, Art Zoom is a new web series where artists offer a narrative on some of the world’s finest pieces of artwork. 

Healy dissects the work of Dutch painter Piet Mondarian in his episode of Art Zoom, which gathered over 89,000 views on Youtube. The singer-songwriter meditated upon Mondarian’s supreme composition, saying “This painting is a pure idea, an infinite portal.” The singer also spoke on how Mondarian influenced his own work during the episode, which can be watched in full here.

In other news, two tracks from The 1975’s old band, Drive Like I Do, appeared on streaming services on October 4th. Released under the Scary Monster EP, the two songs are entitled Wolves and Scary Monsters.

Incorporated within the letter is the important hashtag, #NoSilenceInMusic. An apt title, the initiative advocates speaking out against any form of racism, homophobia, transphobia and antisemitism present within the music industry. 

Along with being co-signed by hundreds of artists, producers and managers, the #NoSilenceInMusic letter has received support from music label giants Sony Music, Island Records, Warner Music and Universal Music.

The open letter examines the disgusting acts of racism and intolerance towards minorities that the world has witnessed in recent months and the unlawful silence against such awful acts. The letter states: “In recent months through a series of events and incidents, the anti-black racists and antisemites, plus those who advocate islamophobia, xenophobia, homophobia and transphobia, have repeatedly demonstrated that they clearly want us all to fail. Whether it be systemic racism and racial inequality highlighted by continued police brutality in America or anti-Jewish racism promulgated through online attacks, the result is the same: suspicion, hatred and division.”

The letter maintains that remaining silent against such issues is advocating the oppression the music industry is trying to wipe out, saying “We, the British music industry are proudly uniting to amplify our voices, to take responsibility, to speak out and stand together in solidarity. Silence is not an option.”

Presenting a pathos of unity through art and standing together against the systematic oppression of minorities, the letter also says “There is a global love for music, irrespective of race, religion, sexuality and gender. Music brings joy and hope and connects us all. Through music, education and empathy we can find unity. We stand together, to educate and wipe out racism now and for our future generations.” The letter can be read in full here.

Many beloved UK artists, including the Smile hitmaker Lily Allen, pop princess Rita Ora, indie darling Circa Waves and rising stars Sports Team, have displayed allegiance against racism in the industry and co-signed the vital letter. Other industry players that have pledged their support to the #NoSilenceInMusic letter are vocalist Ella Eyre, pop group Years & Years, musician and producer Tom Misch and pop songstress Jess Glynne. On the 22nd July, indie band The 1975 also showed their support for the WarChild UK, a charity that works to protect children against the negative impacts of the coronavirus crisis. Posting to Instagram, the Manchester quartet showed their support to the charity, and included a direct link to the WarChild UK website to help with donations.

The 1975 posted a short clip from Don’t Worry on social media to relay the news of the music video’s drop to a whopping 2 million followers. Posted on the 7th July 2020 to Instagram, the content was met with over 125,000 likes and views in just 24 hours, receiving an overwhelmingly positive response from the band’s giant fanbase. 

Dreamy and romantic, Don’t Worry is a ballad that is as warmly reassuring as its apt title. Frontman Matty Healy’s delicate, layered vocals soothe you: “When you feel no one knows just what you’re going through/When your insides feel much colder than snow/Don’t worry, darlin’/’Cause I’m here with you”, whilst the stripped back, but powerful piano moves you. Don’t Worry’s empathetic lyrics certainly strike a chord with anyone who has felt unconditional love for another, giving the song relatability and depth. 

With similar visual stylings to The 1975’s previously released songs, Yeah I Know and The Birthday Party, also directed by Ditto, the video is a CGI-charged dreamlike sequence. Sweet and simple, the music video is the perfect visual complement to its sonic counterpart Don’t Worry. 

Beginning with a beautiful, isolated piano intro not dissimilar to a film score, the first rear shot displays a lonely, animated man. The camera steadily zooms out and displays a high definition, Utopianistic world. Rife with greenery, solar panels and windmills, the CGI world is a vision of sustainability. The shot follows the lone walker strolling through pristine HD surroundings, until the camera rests on a dancing woman, as seen through her window.

Following the main character’s vision, Healy’s intricate harmonies swell with synth-tinged wisps, complementing the on-screen action brilliantly. The viewer is drawn into this bright, animatronic world, and goes willingly. By the end of the video, we are completely invested and when the two animations acknowledge each other and smile, the video is ended on an endearing note, much like the song itself.

Released on the 22nd May, Notes on a Conditional Form is an eclectic twenty-two track record. Described by NME as “the sound of a band with no sonic boundaries”, The 1975’s non-committal to one specific genre comes at no surprise. 

Following the release of Notes… The 1975 were previously scheduled to perform their new album on 11th June 2020 at London’s Finsbury Park music event. With a revised date due to the coronavirus pandemic, the show will now take place on the 10th of July, 2021. Supporting acts originally announced for the event include Charlie XCX and Phoebe Bridgers, but whether they’ll return for the 2021 installment remains to be seen. Nevertheless, indie music lovers everywhere have something else on the horizon to look forward to. 

Notes on a Conditional Form is out now.

During his interview on Radio 1 last night, Healy said: “Like everybody else, I’m in the same situation and taking it day by day,” 

The ‘Frail State Of Mind’ frontman added: “I feel really, really lucky to keep being able to do what I do, when so many people can’t. I’m just trying to not take that for granted.”

Healy also talked working in quarantine. He said: “As soon as [lockdown] started to happen, I know that it was a safe, boxed-off area that I could go. I’ve been here ever since.”

“We didn’t have any plans to be making our own music right now, because we were going to be on tour, but we managed to make this place a little Dirty Hit thing.”

He added: “We’ve been self-isolating with a couple of people from the label. We’ve been working on their music and working on our music.”

Healy shared his thoughts on the process behind making new music. To which he said: “It’s been natural, but it’s been productive. It’s a weird time, and I didn’t think this was gonna happen. With such a massive seismic shift, I’m very into narrative and drama, and [I was originally thinking] ‘Is this the last thing for the band? Is this the end of an era?’”

“I do get turned on by all those ideas, but now there’s been a massive reset. It feels like a different world already. If we wanna exist in this world, we’re gonna have to do something else.”

Recently, The 1975 unveiled the tracklisting to their forthcoming album, ‘Notes On A Conditional Form’. Check it out here. Sadly, the album has been delayed once again. Originally slated for today, the album’s new release date has been set for May 22.

Come on, the wait will be worth it.

Described as “The greenest show Finsbury Park has ever seen”, The 1975 are due to headline the event on July 11.

There’ll be support from artists such as Charlie XCX, Clairo, and Phoebe Bridgers. Others include Pale Waves and Beabadoobee. Of course, with the UK on lockdown and dozens of shows and tours canceled or postponed, nothing is certain.

Jamie Oborne put the question to Twitter on what they’d like to see from Dirty Hit’s forthcoming tenth anniversary. A user replied: “I would like to see an update on what’s happening with finsbury.”

“I’m really hoping they reschedule and let us keep our tickets to go on a new date.” another Twitter user said. To this, Oborne responded: “Yes we are doing this.”

However, in these uncertain times, there’s always some good to balance against the bad. The 1975 very recently unveiled the tracklisting for their long-awaited, fourth album, ‘Notes On A Conditional Form’,

The 1975 were recently announced as headliners for the Boardmasters 2020 festival. Skepta and American rock band Kings Of Leon will also be headlining. The festival runs from August 5-9 at Fistral Beach and Watergate Bay in Newquay, Cornwall.

Skepta performs on Friday, followed by Kings Of Leon on Saturday, before The 1975 round off the proceedings on Sunday. Other acts scheduled for the Cornwall festival include Little Simz, Dizzee Rascal, Mura Masa, Sam Fender, and The Kooks. Indie acts Mabel and Loyle Carner are also billed.

The previous two singles released from their fourth record, succeeding the critically acclaimed A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships, include the self-titled ‘The 1975′, which features a monologue from Swedish climate change campaigner Greta Thunberg.

“For this brand new version of the track, Matty Healy and George Daniel travelled to Sweden to meet with Thunberg in person, recording this brand new, emotive speech that not just shows why she’s become the world’s leading voice on climate change, but challenges listeners to rebel against the establishment.” 

This was followed by ‘People’, a track hailed as “a complete act of sabotage and rebellion.”

The 1975 has subsequently released ‘Frail State Of Mind’, ‘Me & You Together Song’, and just last week, ‘The Birthday Party’. Their fourth album, ‘Notes On A Conditional Form’ is due out on April 24, following a delay to complete production.

“We’ll do what we try and do every year, which is live up to Emily’s idea of a gender-balanced bill,” Bragg said. In discussing the selection for artists, he said: “We aim for as near as possible 50/50 as we can get.”

“To try and reflect society as it is, rather than being just me! I’m really just the front person, our area manager, our head of production, our key person putting together the debates are all female.”

Bragg also praised Emily Eavis, showrunner of Glastonbury, for keeping the spirit of the festival alive. He said: “She’s helped to put her stamp on the festival, the way she’s helped to renew the idea of what Glastonbury is”.

Keeping with the theme of gender-balance, Billy’s beliefs reflect those of The 1975 frontman, Matty Healy. The lead singer declared the band’s intentions to play festivals with gender-balanced line-ups only. 

This was in response to journalist Laura Snapes, over the lack of female and non-binary artists for this year’s Reading & Leeds Festival. As a result, Healy promised: “Take this as me signing this contract – I have agreed to some festivals already that may not adhere to this and I would never let fans down who already have tickets.”

The ‘Frail State Of Mind’ vocalist added: “But from now I will and believe this is how male artist can be true allies.”

Bragg recently performed at Glastonbury 2019. In an NME review of his performance, he was awarded four of five stars.

The review read, “But closing the stage tonight with a cheerfully low-tech performance – just Bragg, his guitar and occasional help from his lead guitarist – the singer-songwriter showed there’s far more to him than barking about politics.”

Frontman Matty Healy described headlining act Rage Against The Machine as a “dope booking”, in response to journalist Laura Snapes.

However, Healy agreed with Snapes, declaring “you are so right”, regarding her views on the sparsity of non-male representation within the festival line-up.

Snapes followed up with a request to Healy, asking him to “add a condition to your rider that says you’ll only play festivals that commit to X% (ideally 50%!) acts that include women and non binary performers,”
