We are changing our band name. We are also playing some shows in Dublin in January. pic.twitter.com/PNhZ19dL2m — Gilla Band (@GillaBand) November 16, 2021

Gilla Band, formerly Girl Band, changed their name last November, apologising to anyone who may have been hurt by the band’s original name. The four Irish men released a statement via Twitter at the time, stating: “We will no longer be performing or releasing records under the name Girl Band. We apologise for choosing a misgendered name in the first place and to anyone who has been hurt or affected by it.”

Continuing: “When we were starting off it was chosen without much thought. From a place of naivety and ignorance. We had no grasp of the weight of it at the time and in the past few years have found it impossible to justify or explain.”

They went on: “Regardless of our intention the effect of the name has been damaging to individuals. To try and negate any unfortunate role we’ve played in propagating a culture of non-inclusivity in music or otherwise. We have decided to change it.”

Finishing with: “Thank you to those who spoke up about it and educated us on this. Either directly or indirectly. Moving forward we will be performing and releasing records under the name Gilla Band. Gilla being a given name taken from old Irish.”

Gilla Band will be releasing their new record, Most Normal on October 7th via Rough Trade Records. Earlier this summer the band released the second single off the album. The track titled “Backwash” was available as a Big Love exclusive 7’, limited to 120 copies and a video animated by Mortis Studios accompanied the release. You can watch the video below.

Speaking to Hot Press singer Dara Kiely revealed the inspiration behind the song: “The initial idea for the whole album was that it would loosely sound like a dream. We didn’t really stick to the brief but it lead us down different sonic avenues. ‘Backwash’ is one of the few tracks where the words represent a dream-like circumstance. The lyrics are from a stream of consciousness rant, weird imagery and all that. The track is about attraction – fancying someone and not knowing what to say exactly. It’s an indirect love song, knowing you like someone but can’t quite articulate it. Thinking that you have already expressed your feelings, but like waking up from a dream you’ve forgotten what you actually have said or felt.”

London residency dates:

16/09/2022 – The Windmill Brixton – London
08/10 – Peckham Audio – London
21/10 – Moth Club – London
09/11 – Studio 9294 – London

London trio deep tan have shared the latest single in the run up to their debut EP. ‘hollow scene’ is the final release before EP ‘creeping speedwells’ drops in July.

deep tan are without a doubt one of the coolest bands on the scene right now and their star is in the ascendency. Fresh off the back of some very strong singles (‘camelot’ and ‘deep fake’), they’re being booked for festivals up and down the country as well as supporting Leeds post-punkers, Yard Act for a leg of their 2022 UK tour.

The track itself lays melodic vocals over a brilliantly catchy beat. Add in the math-rock style guitar and deep tan are really on to a winner here. If this is an indication of what’s to come, then ‘creeping speedwells’ is due to be a real treat. The cut has already picked up traction, earning itself a spin on Steve Lamacq’s BBC 6 Music show last night.

The trio are set to play a whole host of UK festivals, including Truck Fest, Lets Get Together and The Manchester Psych Fest: they are due to share the stage with a number of post-punk big hitters like IDLES, Do Nothing, Billy Nomates and many more.

deep tan have a gig scheduled at the legendary Windmill in Brixton – the venue is famous for incubating the scene that helped bands like Black Midi, Squid and Black Country, New Road go from cult heroes to big hitters in the indie scene. Their brand of angular rock, combined with the Poly-Styrene attitude is sure to win over fans across the post-punk-revival scene that is so prevalent right now.

Their striking style and sound draws inevitable comparisons to Bowie, Robert Smith and Bolan. deep tan have the tunes and the talent to back these comparisons up – they’re bound to go from strength to strength and are one to watch for the future.

Sorry have announced they will be releasing a new live album, ‘A Night At The Windmill’, in which the proceeds will go to saving The Windmill in Brixton. The popular backstreet music venue, which has hosted many up-coming indie bands, has been identified as one of the 30 venues in critical need of funding. This comes from Music Venue Trust’s ‘Save Our 30 #TrafficLight’ campaign, which raises money for the 30 grassroots music venues that are in critical need of donations and support.

The North London based band will be releasing 500 vinyls on Bandcamp, with all the proceeds going to The Windmill. Sorry have taken to Instagram to promote their new live album from their November show at the mentioned music venue. They said, ‘We’re releasing this live show we did last Nov at the Windmill exclusively on Bandcamp this Bandcamp Friday! 500 vinyl copies only.
The albums tracklist is from their debut album released in 2020, ‘925’, plus a further two bonus tracks as promised by the band. The album has been hailed as ‘unashamedly experimental and woozy, without having a bad track on it’ with added help and expertise from Gorillaz producer James Dring during production. Started by best friends Asha Lorenz and Louis O’Bryen, the experimental indie quartet will be charging £20 for the live album as well as donating £925 themselves to the worthy cause.

The Windmill has been described by Billboard as “a divey hangout for indie-spirited DIY musicians”, presenting a welcoming space for musicians to experiment with their sound to a music-fanatic audience. The Windmill have their own fundraiser set up too, which has raised up to £65,000 of the desired £72,000 target.

This is not the only time Sorry have participated in fundraising to save music venues from closure. During May 2020, they and other bands such as Shame and Porridge Radio, participated in a charity compilation, ‘Group Therapy Vol.1’, which raised funds for Music Venues Trust and NHS Charities Together.
