An exclusive report from Page Six revealed that Britney Spears may make her long-awaited return to music by collaborating with British icon, Sir Elton John. Rumour has it the pair are working on a new rendition of his 1971 song “Tiny Dancer”. Reportedly, Elton met with Britney at a recording studio in Beverley Hills last week to work on the track which could be released in August.

The Page Six source said, “This was Elton’s idea, and Britney is a huge fan. They have recorded a remix of ‘Tiny Dancer’ as a full duet — and it is incredible,” “Britney was in the studio in Beverly Hills last week with Elton for the super-secret recording session overseen by uber-producer Andrew Watt.”

Watt won the 2021 Grammy Award for Producer of the Year and has worked with megastars like Pearl Jam, Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber. He also worked with Elton John on his collaboration album The Lockdown Sessions which features his hugely successful single “Cold Heart” featuring Dua Lipa.

This would be Britney’s first release since her 2016 song “Slumber Party” from her ninth studio album Glory. The song hit number one on the US Billboard Dance Club Songs Chart and Britney met her now husband, Sam Asghari, when shooting the music video.

Spears’ private life has dominated the headlines over the last couple of years due to the battle against her conservatorship. In June of last year, Britney spoke publicly for the first time and stated, “I just want my life back.” In 2021, she posted to her Instagram telling fans “I’m not gonna be performing on any stages anytime soon with my dad handling what I wear, say, do, or think.” The controversial conservatorship was terminated late last year and Britney has given few hints about returning to work.

On 15th July, the star took to social media to share two short videos to her Instagram page featuring herself singing a new rendition of her 1998 single “…Baby One More Time.” The caption reads, “I haven’t shared my voice in an extremely long time … maybe too long.” She explains how she wanted to release this darker version, but she was told “no” by her team.

Page Six reports that the “appetite for Spears’ comeback is so big that she also scored “a record-breaking deal” from the label to record with John,” which could mean this is the start of an even bigger comeback. Since her debut in 1998 Britney has earned a Grammy, fifteen Guinness World Records, six MTV Video Music Awards and seven Billboard Music Awards, including the Millennium Award.

Representatives for Spears, John or their record label are yet to comment on the report.

The news comes from an interview with The Daily Star, relayed via NME.

Earlier this year, Elton John released his collaborative album The Lockdown Sessions, which featured contributions from a wide spectrum of artists, some of whom were active alongside John in the 1970s such as Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks and Stevie Wonder, as well as newer artists such as Dua Lipa, Years & Years, Young Thug. The album also featured contributions from Metallica bassist Robert Trulijo, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder. The album was generally well-received, with NME calling the album a “genre-hopping delight” in a four-star review published back in October.

Despite featuring a myriad of well-celebrated new artists on the album, it was perhaps surprising to some that indie rocker Sam Fender did not appear on the roster, especially given his recent success.

Fender revealed in an interview last month that he was indeed asked to contribute to the album, however he was forced to turn down the opportunity due to how busy he was working on his new record Seventeen Going Under, which was released on the 8th of October to wide acclaim. The album has found its way to the number one spot on NME’s Best Albums of The Year 2021 list, with the publication saying: “Geordie hero’s heartfelt second album cements his place as a British guitar great”.

Although Fender was unable to collaborate with Elton John on The Lockdown Sessions, he has recently expressed that he is keen to work with the legendary singer when they can make it happen, saying: “Me and Elton will definitely happen at some point. We just need to find time to get into the studio…We want to make something special together. I’d love us to make something stripped back, that sounds organic with a band.” John has spoken highly of Fender in the past, calling him “the best rock and roll artist there is”, and the two have collaborated previously in a live setting, performing Fender’s single “Will We Talk” in February 2020.

In other news regarding Sam Fender, the singer-songwriter will be headlining Finsbury Park next Summer alongside the likes of Declan McKenna and Fontaines D.C. Fender’s acclaimed second album Seventeen Going Under is available via all streaming services, and physical copies can be found here.
