Billie Joe Armstrong played at ‘The Garage‘ in London last night and was joined on stage by a surprise guest – Courtney Love. Also in attendance were Green Day lead singer Billy Joe’s side project, ‘The Coverups’, and they performed songs by Cheap Trick and Tom Petty.

Last night (the 27th of February), 600 fans were treated to one heck of a show indeed.

The Coverups, who are a cover band, are comprised of Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong and touring guitarist Jason White, plus Bill Schneider and Chris Dugan on bass and drums, respectively – played a hit-packed 24-song set in north London, having only announced the show just last week.

As if that wasn’t enough of a treat, they were joined on stage midway through the show by Courtney Love — who said she’d been “living in a cave in Birmingham for about nine years”.

Lead singer of ‘Hole’ and a legend in her own right, Love joined the Coverups on stage and lent her signature vocals to covers of Cheap Trick’s He’s A Whore and Tom Petty’s Even The Losers, before she came back out again for another Cheap Trick cover, Surrender.

In an eventful night, The Coverups took on a number of hits from The Ramones to Nirvana and threw in a bonus performance of Love Is For Losers by another of Billie Joe’s projects, The Longshot.

The noisy, raw, yet melodic Where You Been arrived on the (freak) scene in February 1993. After J Mascis largely recorded Green Mind himself, Where You Been was the beginning of Dinosaur Jr.’s new lineup with Murph returning on drums, the newly appointed Mike Johnson on bass, and J Mascis leading the trio. “It’s the first time we’ve felt like a band for maybe six years, or something,” Mascis mumbled to MTV’s 120 Minutes in 1993, “[Johnson] adds a lot, just having someone that I can get along with musically and personally. It just makes the record better having all the people there contributing something, rather than the last one.” Watch the interview below:

Where You Been became the band’s most successful record up to that point reaching number 50 on The Billboard 200 and number 10 on the UK charts. Receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews, the album was listed on several music publications’ best album of the year lists and on Select Magazine’s best of the 90s tier list.

Watch the video for the single “Start Choppin'” below:

The band reissued a remastered and expanded edition of the influential album in 2019 including B-sides and peel session recordings on blue vinyl.

J Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph have been the new Dinosaur Jr. lineup since the band’s reunion in 2005. The unit’s most recent record, Swept Into Space, was released in 2021 through Jagjaguwar. Produced by Mascis and the laidback psychedelic singer-songwriter Kurt Vile, the band’s 12th studio LP won over critics and fans, proving the band is still masters of alt-rock.

The three-piece have a packed schedule ahead of them with plenty of US festival and tour dates from June until September planned.

See below for Dinosaur Jr.’s UK shows:

12/11/23 – The Garage – London
13/11 – The Garage – London
14/11 – The Garage – London
15/11 – The Garage – London

Jade Bird has Announced the release of her Debut Album. The 21-year-old British singer, songwriter and musician Jade Bird has announced that her debut album will be released, on the 19th of April 2019, via Glassnote records.

The Northumbria-born, London-based singer released her debut EP ‘Something American’, in July 2017, which was followed by several singles including ‘Love Has All Been Done Before’. The EP caused a stir in America, where Rolling Stone coined her an artist you need to know. The singers British take on Americana has had her labelled as a country singer, which Bird has has deemed a little restrictive.

Speaking about the album, Bird said: “This album is my experience, direct and undiluted, of the past two years. Every decision I’ve made has culminated into this magical process, just as every word I’ve written has spun into these songs. It changes in style, like most of my music, and tries to dodge boxes and genres but the consistency is me – a young woman really trying to figure it out’.

Bird spoke to NME last year about how moving t0 New York City to record her debut album “clarified everything” for her following an “anxious phase in London”. The US has been an “idealistic” place for her to be creative, where, she said, there was a “freedom of eccentricity that I feel is sometimes a bit shunned in the UK”.

Bird has been playing since the tender age of 12, when she first picked up her grandmother’s guitar. She has been writing for several years, to date she’s filled three notebooks with lyrics and ideas. During her teens, Bird played at scores of open mic nights, before winning a place at the notorious performing arts Brit School in London. Jade Bird plays London’s The Garage on January 29 and Paradise Noord in Amsterdam on February 13. Get your tickets here.
