Tim Burgess, frontman of The Charlatans and vocal campaigner against unfair venue commission practices, has confirmed that the Merch Market, his artist‑friendly marketplace concept, is heading to London in 2026. The announcement marks a bold expansion of a model designed to let musicians sell direct to fans without paying fees or commission.

The Merch Market is a purpose-built event where bands, solo artists and labels can set up stalls and sell their merchandise commission‑free, meaning 100% of sales go to the artists. It’s a direct response to longstanding complaints about venues taking cuts of merch sales, a practice Burgess has long called unfair and exploitative.

The 2026 edition in London is expected to be the largest yet. While official details are still under wraps, the event is likely to feature artist-run stalls, exclusive merch drops, live music, and panel discussions. Previous editions have included pop-up print shops, real-time custom merch production, and talks about everything from sustainability in merch design to the challenges of touring as an independent act.

Burgess has been clear about his motivation. In interviews, he’s expressed frustration with the current system, where artists often receive less than their fair share. In response, he’s turned to practical solutions rather than just raising awareness. The Merch Market is built on collaboration, community, fairness and its success so far shows that there’s demand for this kind of event.

Still, the London edition won’t be without challenges. Coordinating multiple venues, managing foot traffic, and handling production costs in a city as expensive as London will be no small task. Ensuring that the event remains financially sustainable while keeping it free from commissions will require careful planning.

However, the payoff could be significant. A successful London Merch Market could become a blueprint for fairer merch practices industry-wide. It offers a chance to flip the narrative and to show that artists can take control of their sales, connect directly with fans, and build stronger, more equitable communities.

For fans, it’s an opportunity to support their favourite acts in a more meaningful way. For artists, it’s a chance to retain ownership of their work and earnings. And for the industry, it’s a wake-up call and perhaps the beginning of a long-overdue shift.

Britpop icons The Charlatans have released the first single, ‘We Are Love’, from their upcoming album of the same name.

Frontman Tim Burgess describes the new song as being “like an open top car ride in the credits of your favourite movie, driving along the coast to somewhere amazing”, an anthemic prefix to the 11-track record.

It’s been eight years since the Manchester band released their 13th studio album, ‘Different Days‘ and the band are back with a new album, ‘We Are Love’.

Speaking to NME, Burgess said “I think it’s the best record we’ve done”, describing the new album, which was recorded at the iconic Rockfield Studios. Rockfield Studios represents a solemn time in The Charlatans’ history, as it is where former keyboard player, Rob Collins, was killed in a car crash. Burgess told NME, “There’s a lot of memories there. And in some ways, it was a reason why we didn’t go back for a long time. In fact, it was quite a big reason.”

The Charlatans’ last records featured collaborators Paul Weller, Johnny Marr and New Order, but the new record, produced by Dev Hynes (Florence & The Machine, Caroline Polachek, Chemical Brothers), entertains a much more intimate circle of contributors.

The event was first announced last month by Tim Burgess. The Charlatans frontman aims to tackle the growing problem of venues taking a hefty cut of merch sales, previously stating how “the whole system needs addressing”.

Multiple sites in Manchester will host the market, although they are all within a couple minutes walk of each other. Participating venues include 02 Ritz Manchester, Dog Bowl, Gorilla and more.

Burgess, the organiser of the event, has been speaking out for years about the problems with venues taking an unfair cut of merch sales. In a 2021 tweet he said: “This isn’t about The Charlatans, it’s about those bands who need merch income to survive.”

Big respect to those venues that don’t take a percentage of a band’s merch sales. Every artist ranging from north-east legends such as New Order all the way to new, up-and-coming musicians such as Ruby J will have the opportunity to sell their merch and meet fans.

Ruby J took to Instagram to share her excitement and announce that she will performing at the event in May.

“I can’t quite believe what’s happened with The Merch Market – a New Order stall with Stephen and Gillian doing an on-stage interview would be enough for me but so many amazing artists got in touch, from bona fide legends to younger bands taking their first steps.”

It’s not the first time Burgess has openly tackled this problem, as he has been a vocal supporter of the ‘100% Venues’ campaign run by the Featured Artists Coalition (FAC). This initiative gives venues the opportunity to sign up to give artists 100% of the merch sales.

Over 400 venues have signed up to the FAC 100% Venues directory, and late last year a Government committee backed the campaign, giving hope that true change will eventually happen.

But until legislation is bought in to tackle the problem, Burgess will carry on to lead the charge for a fairer ecosystem for up-and-coming artists.

With the market being free to attend, be sure to get down to Central Manchester on May 25 to check out this exciting event. Artists and businesses looking to get involved can still sign up to request a stall. This can be done via the Help Us Help Bands website.

The Record Store Day edition will see the band put a fresh spin on the track through their collaboration with Beggars Arkive, marking another collaboration between the pair following their rendition of breakthrough single, ‘Indian Rope’ for last year’s event.

Remastered by Frank Arkwright and Abbey Road Studios and released via Beggars Banquet imprint Situation Two, ‘The Only One I Know’ vinyl will be accompanied with two other tracks, ‘Imperial 109’ and ‘Everything Changed’.

Comprising of lead vocalist Tim Burgess, guitarist Mark Collins, bassist Martin Blunt and keyboardist Tony Rogers, The Charlatans captivated listeners with their second single, ‘The Only One I Know’, from their 1990 debut album ‘Some Friendly’, securing them a spot at no. 9 on the UK Singles Chart. Over 30 years since its initial release, the single has become a nostalgic track which soundtracked the 1990s with its mind-blowing basslines, electrifying melody and Burgess’ euphonic vocals.

According to a press release for the announcement, the exclusive vinyl marks one of two special releases in collaboration with Record Store Day 2025.

While referencing the prominence of the track, the press release stated it was “a defining moment in the baggy era, it remains a club favourite and a key part of the band’s legacy. Over 30 years later, now remastered and available on picture disc, its hypnotic groove is set to captivate listeners for decades still to come.”

The latter has revealed a limited-edition six-track EP, ‘Me And The Dog’ will be released on 12” vinyl, following the scheduled release of his third album ‘People Watching’, set to release 21 February. The West Midlands rockers and Fender will join an already extensive list of UK artists that have released exclusives for previous Record Store Day‘s, including: The 1975, Kate Bush, Noel Gallagher and Elton John (to name a few).

Tim Burgess, a member of The Charlatans, created this unique listening experience when the UK was plunged into lockdown in March 2020. Realising the loss of live music, he wanted to recreate this experience.

Tim used his Twitter platform to create the incredible show at the end of March 2020. Tim’s Listening Party saw huge success and in March 2023 he took the show to Absolute Radio.

Content Director for Absolute Radio, Paul Sylvester, said “Tim’s Listening Party has become a phenomenon. Giving audiences the chance to listen to the music and conversation while engaging with other fans on social media ties everything together.”

After 3 years of amazing success, at a time when the UK was down on its luck, Tim brought new meaning to live music. Inviting listeners to stream the album and follow along with him, joining other like-minded souls to converse about the songs and albums in real time.

Following on from his recent tweet, Tim reminded fans that there are over 1000 listening parties available to replay on their website.

He also added a further tweet, confirming there would not be a show on Absolute Radio this coming Sunday the 3rd September; however, the former Charlatan member told his listeners that next Sunday the 9th September at 10pm, there would be a special episode and he would be filling that guest spot and the show would be hosted by Danielle Perry.

It is still uncertain, if this will be the final Tim’s Listening Party show or not.

There’s no @LlSTENlNG_PARTY on @absoluteradio tomorrow but back next Sunday at 10pm with a special episode. @danielleperry will be the host, I’m the guest and Tellin’ Stories is the featured album.
Fans and listeners took to Twitter in reply to Tim’s recent news, that it would be the end of Tim’s Listening Party.

One listener tweeted “A sad day if this is how it ends. You made a beautiful thing, Tim. I don’t think any of us who ever took part will ever forget it. A true beacon in dark days. Thanks so much and all at @LlSTENlNG_PARTY.”

The View have released their much-anticipated new album, Exorcism of Youth, with this being their first album released in 8 years.

Speaking on Exorcism of Youth, frontman Kyle Falconer said, “This is my baby.” The album delivers the classic indie-rock tracks that the band are known for but also promises to show off a “new-found maturity and darker undercurrent” as told in a press release.

The album has already garnered glowing reviews, with The Daily Star writing “The indie veterans managed to get the chemistry cracking back in the studio after years apart. Calm ballads and energetic synthpop show they’ve learned new tricks… they’re still capable of delivering a knockout blow.”

Similarly, Northern Exposure wrote, “Their most vulnerable album yet… Every listen will uncover fresh little gems.”

The album includes their latest single, “Black Mirror,” with frontman Kyle Falconer explaining in a press release that the tone of the song is closer to revenge than romance.

Falconer shared, “‘Black Mirror’ isn’t a love song as it may appear on the surface, it’s an anti-hero escape into the consciousness of a person grappling with dark feelings in the early hours of a break-up. It’s schadenfreude, it’s about relishing in someone else’s misery when they have watched your demise. Basically looking at how people can be too afraid nowadays to feel those ugly emotions and just white wash them away but it’s okay to feel that sometimes, but it’s how you act on it that counts.”

The View worked with Grammy-award winning producer, Youth to create Exorcism of Youth, known for his work with The Verve, The Charlatans and Jesus & Mary Chain.

The band’s reunion follows a tumultuous period for the band, during which an on-stage fight took place during a show, leading them to cancel subsequent shows. Speaking on the fight, Falconer said, “It was just personal stuff. We’ve made up about it now. It’s too deep to explain. It’s all good again. I think we’re better for it. We’re all best pals again now.”

He continued, “These things have happened numerous times in every country in the world. Being in The View can be volatile sometimes because everyone’s got their own ideas. But we’ve been through worse than that. We’ve both apologised and it’s fine – if it wasn’t, we wouldn’t still be in a band.”

Despite their self-proclaimed short tempers and ability to clash, The View are quickly approaching their 20th anniversary as a band and are keen to keep going strong.

The View are set to embark on a UK tour across November and December. Tickets are available to purchase here.

With all thirteen of their studio albums charting in the top 40 in the UK, the band from the West Midlands are decade-spanning indie darlings of the UK. Their 1990 debut album, Some Friendly, reached number one in the UK upon its release and has been certified Gold by the BPI.

The current formation of The Charlatans sees Tim Burgess as lead vocalist, Mark Collins on guitar, Martin Blunt on bass, and Tony Rogers on keys. Sadly, the band’s former drummer Jon Brookes passed away back in 2014.

Different Days, the band’s last studio record, was released six years ago on BMG. The neo-psychedelia record in Chester and produced by the band and Jim Spencer (Johnny Marr, The Cribs, New Order, The Vaccines, Echo and the Bunnymen). Paul Weller, New Order’s Gillian Gilbert and Stephen Morris, Johnny Marr, The Verve’s Peter Salisbury, novelist Ian Rankin, and actress Sharon Horgan are just some of the creatives featured on the record.

Sheffield’s longest-running venue The Leadmill is calling on fans to object to the landlord licence application following the team behind the venue being served an eviction notice. The current managers of the venue are asking the general public to object to the premise license application before the 24th May to help save the venue.

On the 17th May, the venue posted on its website and social media accounts the plea for fans to object to the landlord’s licence application writing, “As many of you are aware, our landlords have issued The Leadmill with an eviction notice in order to operate from this location themselves. If they are successful, this would result in The Leadmill ceasing to exist after 43 years.”

Help to save The Leadmill. For more information please visit https://t.co/2YhtkPx7M7 pic.twitter.com/d0wkeKUMbZ

Members of the public can object to the application if they are aware of any relevant reasons as to why it shouldn’t be granted which includes the prevention of crime and disorder, public safety, the prevention of public nuisance, and the protection of children from harm. The Leadmill continued, “You may be assisted in your understanding by Googling relevant reviews and press reports about the operation of the landlord’s current nightclubs. These are; Electric Brixton, SWX Bristol, and NX Newcastle.”

In 2017, Electric Group bought the site’s freehold and announced their plans to evict the current management in order to run the venue themselves under the name Electric Sheffield last year.

Artists and gig-goers alike have been quick to support the preservation of the current managers of The Leadmill on social media. Last year when the landlords announced their plans to evict the organisers, Yorkshire band Kaiser Chiefs took to Twitter writing, “We played The Leadmill in our early days and not only do we have very fond memories, it really helped us, too. It would be a huge loss not just for Sheffield and Yorkshire, but the whole UK music scene.”

Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess also joined the #WeCantLoseTheLeadmill campaign on social media writing, “Such a brilliant venue. Let’s do all we can to stop The @Leadmill from closing.”

Northern Irish rock band Ash joined the campaign too, adding, “This venue has been part of our lives for almost 30 years.
Sheffield’s own Arctic Monkeys have previously shown their support for the venue by launching a Crowdfunder campaign to help with funding in 2020. Alex Turner chipped in by giving away his Fender Stratocaster used in the band’s early days.

Last year, Music Venue Trust launched a new initiative to protect, secure, and improve UK music venues.

The former flour mill has a long history of hosting gigs having once been the Esquire in the 1960s where the Small Faces and Jimi Hendrix played. The live music venue and nightclub first opened its doors as The Leadmill in 1980 and has since hosted artists including Pulp, Coldplay, The Stone Roses, Arctic Monkeys, Kings of Leon, The Killers, and Oasis. To celebrate its 40th anniversary back in 2021, the venue released a limited edition red vinyl compilation album featuring tracks from the likes of The Orielles, Enter Shikari, and Bedroom High Club.

It has also been confirmed that The View will perform at other live shows. Intimate headline gigs at Manchester’s Deaf Institute (May 10) and London Oslo (May 11) are already sold out. Numerous festivals are scheduled along the way. Calling at: Neighbourhood Weekender (May 27), Darwen Live (May 27-28), TRNSMT (July 7), Greenwich Royal Naval College (July 8 plus Kaiser Chiefs as special guests), The Mighty Boof (August 18-19), Victorious (August 25) and Shiiine (November 19)

After five years of inactivity within the band and the band reconvened, the three old friends came to a realisation of the fact of how much they have missed everything during their time as a band, the rush of the sight of an audience’s reaction to their performances, the thought of staying close together and a simple jam idea evolving into a song within a second.

Their connection gathered place in Granada Spain as they focused on new material with the Grammy Award winning producer, Youth (The Verve, Jesus and Mary Chain, The Charlatans). This resulted in their latest upcoming album, Exorcism Of Youth and it weaves natural-sounding sonic elements into their renowned rock ‘n’ roll feel in the album. Their first new track in 8 years, “Just Like”, gained attention from Jo Whiley at Radio 2 and received a very positive reaction. This was also followed by being named Track of the Week at Amazing Radio. The return of The View continued to gain traction with the follow-up of their song in the album, “Neon Lights”.

Further acts have been confirmed to play Signals Festival; The Charlatans, Tim Burgess and Tim Peaks will take the festival’s stage on 11th June 2022 and join the event’s impressive line-up. The festival will be held to celebrate Nottingham, Derbyshire and South Yorkshire’s music scene and aims to create a fun atmosphere for everyone.

Located in Derbyshire’s Crich Tramway Village, the event promises ticketholders a day full of music, culture and the arts. The one-day festival offers a wide variety of activities for everyone ranging from a woodland diner to a film marquee and bars located within the surrounding forest. Signals Festival is advertised as a family-friendly event which offers a range of activities for kids including an adventure play area with a specialist programme organised.

Also included with a festival ticket is the unique opportunity to stroll the historical village and enjoy a retro pub, old fashioned style sweet shop, Victorian Tramway Museum plus entry to the three acres of picturesque woods which surround the village and festival site. Ticketholders will also have the chance to hop on an original tram which will transport guests to the main festival site after an adventure into the quaint village.

Speaking on the upcoming event, the festival’s directors Gareth Murfin and Anthony Clements have provided further details, “We’ve been planning this for three years now and the result is something really unique that we’re proud of. Where else can you get a vintage tram ride across the Festival site?! Now we just can’t wait for everyone to come and enjoy what we’ve been planning. We fell in love with this charming venue as soon as we saw it, so to be able to programme some of our favourite established artists, alongside some incredible emerging talent that we’ve unearthed locally in the regions, is something very special for us. Expect a beautiful and relaxed setting, where you can take time to explore the Victorian village, before hopping on a tram up to the music stages.”

Along with a traditional stage appearance, Tim Burgess’ brainchild Tim Peaks will perform an in-person version of his Tim’s Twitter Listening Parties. The Charlatans frontman launched the show in lockdown to entertain the public during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the initial Livestream was held in 2020 and featured the group’s 1990 album Some Friendly. The veteran rockers’ performance will also celebrate the 25th anniversary of their fifth studio album Tellin’ Stories and Burgess will perform as a solo artist.

The recently announced acts will join the already confirmed line-up including The Cribs, This Is the Kit, Liz Lawrence, Peaness, Fiona Bevan, Cucamaras, Deja Vega, Rising The Low, Claire Welles, Dirty Laces, The Red Stains, Dean McMullen, Young Decades, The Rosadocs, CatMilk, Shadows Of A Silhouette, King Blonde, Ami Sharpe, Melonade, Alt Blk Era, Estella, Isaac Neilson, Crich Brass, Fellow Braves and a Q and A with filmmaker Mat Whitecross.
