Supergrass kicked off proceedings on the Pyramid Stage this afternoon as they celebrated their hit debut album ‘I Should Coco’.

This month marks exactly 30 years since the release of their seminal album – which coincides with the anniversary of the band’s first Glastonbury appearance in 1995. After they performed at Worthy Farm that year, ‘I Should Coco’ went on to hit Number One and sell over 500,000 copies in the UK.

30 years on, they opened up Pyramid Stage at midday today (Friday June 27) where they performed multiple hits from the album. After playing ‘I’d Like to Know’, ‘Caught by the Fuzz’ and ‘Mansize Rooster’, they then broke out into their hit single ‘Alright’. This was when technical problems hit BBC iPlayer, to the demise of fans watching throughout the country.

So, BBC iPlayer shut down midway through Supergrass doing ‘Alright’.

Did they think Kneecap were about to start playing?

Went back on and Pyramid Stage stream was gone, but the signed version was still going.

And it’s ace!#Glastonbury #Glastonbury2025 pic.twitter.com/zsVgbOZOOU

The brief issues were quickly sorted and the broadcast returned as lead singer, Gaz Coombes, addressed the large crowd: “So pretty much 31, 30 years ago, we made this mad little record called ‘I Should Coco’, and we’re gonna be playing most of it for you this afternoon.”

Coombes continued, reflecting on their first Glasto’ appearance 3 decades ago: “30 years ago – 1995. A long time ago. Who’d have guessed? We came in by chopper.”

Although the performance was predominantly a celebration of the Oxford-based band’s debut album, they did also play hits from deeper in their discography.

The set list was as follows:

‘Caught by the Fuzz’

‘Mansize Rooster’

‘Lenny’

‘Sofa (Of My Lethargy)’

‘Late in the Day’

‘Mary’

‘Moving’

‘Sun Hits The Sky’

‘Pumping on Your Stereo’

Supergrass marked the 30th anniversary of ‘I Should Coco’ with a UK tour in May where they visited Glasgow, Nottingham, Sheffield, Newcastle, Birmingham, Manchester, Cardiff, Leeds, London and finally Cornwall.

Speaking about the tour after it was first announced, Coombes told NME: “It’s cool, man. It’s been about a year in the making. It’s just such a great record and really means a lot to us.

“The great thing about it is that this record is part of our DNA. It’s mad that 30 years later, we’re still able to pull off that energetic, youthful chemistry on stage and read each other in that way. Although it’s a 30-year-old record, we all feel really connected to it.”

You can check out Supergrass’ full Glastonbury performance now on iPlayer. Keep an eye on mxdwn.co.uk this weekend to catch all the news relating to the Worthy Farm festival.

The band commented: “The old white mansion in Gunnersbury Park is in one of our favourite films, The Lavender Hill Mob, so we thought we’d bring the Eastern Esplanade mob and some spiky guitars to that Arcadian glade in West London for a good ol’ homecoming knees up.”

“Look forward to seeing you there, along with our friends Supergrass, Soft Play, Hak Baker, Lambrini Girls and Real Farmer. Love Peter, Carl, Gary and John X”

The ‘Don’t Look Back into the Sun’ rockers have recently performed 3 nights in a row at Camden’s Roundhouse and will continue touring until April 2025, including shows in France, Germany, and even Australia. Aside from Gunnersbury Park, the Libs will also headline in Margate on July 5 with a support act from Soft Play, and in Halifax on August 8.

“We first played with The Libertines 22 years ago back in 2002 when we took the fledgling band on tour with us. Wow… time flies when you’re having fun. See you there!”

Tickets for The Libertines at Gunnersbury Park went on sale on November 8 and are currently priced at around £62.

The Libertines are a British rock band formed in London in 1997 by frontmen Pete Doherty and Carl Barât. The band gained a cult following in the early 2000s, becoming a key part of the UK indie music scene with albums like ‘Up the Bracket‘ (2002) and ‘The Libertines‘ (2004). Despite their success, the band faced internal tensions, largely due to Doherty’s well-publicized struggles with substance abuse. These conflicts led to a hiatus in 2004.

Moles has been a staple in the Bath music scene, known for its intimate atmosphere and dedication to showcasing emerging talent. The venue’s closure marks the end of an era for both musicians and fans alike. Throughout its 45-year history, Moles has played a crucial role in nurturing local talent and providing a platform for artists to gain recognition. Many bands and artists have credited the venue for kickstarting their careers and helping them gain exposure in the industry.

Oasis, one of the most successful British bands of all time, performed at Moles early in their career, and the venue is often credited as being instrumental in their rise to fame. Similarly, Ed Sheeran, who has become a global superstar, also graced the stage at Moles in his early days.

Oasis Ed Sheeran

The impact of Moles extends beyond just launching successful acts. Manic Street Preachers, a Welsh rock band, secured a record deal after their performance at the venue. Supergrass, another popular British band, even used Moles’ dressing room for the cover shoot of their debut album, highlighting the venue’s significance in the music industry.

Manic Street Preachers Supergrass

The closure of Moles is a devastating blow to the local music community. The owners’ decision to file for insolvency reflects the harsh reality of the financial challenges faced by grassroots venues. The rising cost of living and increasing bills have made it increasingly difficult for small venues like Moles to stay afloat.

Co-owner Tom Maddicot’s statement about the economic viability of grassroots live music is a sobering reminder of the challenges faced by these venues. Without adequate support and a sustainable financial model, more small venues may face a similar fate. Tom said “Making the decision to close Moles was horrendous, but the reality is that live music at grassroots level is no longer economically viable.”

Moles’ rich history and contribution to the music scene in Bath cannot be understated. From hosting early performances by iconic bands like Blur, The Cure, and The Smiths, to providing a platform for up-and-coming artists, the venue has left an indelible mark on the industry.

As the doors of Moles close for the final time, the music community mourns the loss of a beloved institution. The memories and impact of this iconic venue will live on, but its closure serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by grassroots music venues in an increasingly challenging economic climate.

Recently, Moles hosted Slowthai, and the fast-rising indie band The Last Dinner Party. Unfortunately, the closure of Moles adds to the growing number of losses in the UK’s live music circuit.

Mark Davyd, the CEO of the Music Venue Trust, believes that the closure of Moles reflects a larger failure by the music industry and the government to invest in venues that support emerging artists. The Music Venue Trust is looking to France as an example, where the government has implemented a ticket levy on arena shows to provide financial support to smaller venues and up-and-coming artists. Davyd has reached out to the UK government and opposition parties, urging them to take action and support the grassroots live sector. He said “Unless it gets serious about its responsibilities to encourage, nurture and develop the grassroots live sector, the music industry as a whole will face a catastrophic failure of artist development,”

Gaz Coombes has announced he is set to embark on a solo UK tour. The frontman of alternative rock band Supergrass will be testing out some of his new solo material on the tour, whilst also treating fans to cuts from his records Matador (2015) and World’s Strongest Man (2018).

Kicking off in London at The Lexington on April 14, Coombes will then visit intimate venues in Bath, Tunbridge Wells, Hebden Bridge and York before the tour concludes on April 23 at the Brudenell in Leeds. These solo dates will follow on from a pair of Supergrass gigs which will take place on April 4 and 5 in London and Oxford. The shows were previously rescheduled last month due to the rise in coronavirus cases in the UK.

Supergrass said in a statement at the time. “A lot has changed over the last few days with the rise in Omicron cases, It’s been an incredibly tough call to make but we feel to play these shows at this point in time would be the wrong thing to do for all concerned.”

So gutted to announce this. Looking to reschedule asap in the new year. pic.twitter.com/cOWS93LNRA

In addition to the aforementioned dates, Supergrass will also be playing in Glasgow and Falkirk on June 6 and 7 respectively.

Whilst the Supergrass reunion has been the main focus apart from the pandemic during the past couple of years it is good news for fans that the musician hasn’t been neglecting his solo career. After the band originally split in 2010 due to musical differences, Coombes announced the next year he was set to release a solo project and performed his first solo shows in December of that year. Shortly after as promised he released his debut solo single “Hot Fruit” in March 2012 followed soon after by his debut album, Here Come the Bombs. Both releases were well received by critics and fans.

Oxford-bred bands including Radiohead, Supergrass, Foals and Glass Animals helped local music publication ‘Nighshift‘ by donating prices to crowdfunding.
Oxford’s monthly music magazine helped many bands with their big break since 1995 when it first went on print. It was started by editor Ronan Munro in 1991 under the name ‘Curfew‘ to cover and promote Oxford bred musicians.
‘Nightshift‘ has helped many musicians for the last 30 years buts it’s been on hiatus since April 2020. The free publication relies highly on advertising and that went down due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

They needed to raise £12,000 to cover printing and distribution. “It doesn’t matter how many global superstars we produce, they don’t forget their roots” – said Munro.
Famous bands, that featured in the magazine in the past and sprung to stardom, donated various items to the prize draw to help raise the money. Oxford bred acts like Radiohead, Foals, Glass Animals, Supergrass, Ride, Stornoway and Young Knives all contributed. Munro commented: “I went to the most successful bands in Oxford and asked them if they would help and every single one of them said yes straight away which was fantastic“.

The prizes included: “a test pressing of Radiohead rarities, a deluxe boxset of the Supergrass Strange Ones greatest hits, and a signed Ride album plus Andy Bell demos. Radiohead, Ride, Glass Animals, Stornoway and Young Knives have also signed rare copies of their magazine cover debuts“. A full list of donated items can be found here.

The prize draw runs until 29th July and even though the target has been met donations and support is always needed.

2021 will mark the festival’s fifteenth anniversary, with the annual Cumbrian bash kicking off back in 2006 with headline sets from Pendulum and British Sea Power. Since then, the Kendal Calling stage has been graced by the likes of Manic Street Preachers, Suede, Echo & The Bunnymen, Calvin Harris, Nile Rodgers and Chic, Snoop Dogg and Public Enemy.

Festival co-founders Andy Smith and Ben Robinson spoke to NME about their building excitement for the festival’s return after a Coronavirus-enforced hiatus in 2020. They said “It’s a great feeling to be able to announce the return of Kendal Calling in 2021. Not being able to celebrate together in the fields last year has only heightened anticipation for our return this July with a lineup that truly captures what Kendal Calling is all about…It’s sure to be an unforgettable moment stepping back into Lowther Deer Park this July and we can’t wait to have you all join us.”

Stereophonics, who headlined Kendal Calling in 2017 as part of a triple-bill with compatriots the Manics and Scottish art-rockers Franz Ferdinand, will return to the live stage fresh off the back of frontman Kelly Jones’ reflective solo album Don’t Let The Devil Take Another Day. The LP, released last December, included reimagined versions of a clutch of the Aberdare band’s classic hits – including Hurry Up And Wait, Mr Writer, Local Boy In The Photograph, Maybe Tomorrow, Traffic, Just Looking and Dakota – as well as a series of covers. Jones told fans that the track selection for the record – which came ten years after the tragic death of the band’s charismatic and much-loved original drummer Stuart Cable – “pulled together the songs that got him through the worst of times, whilst telling stories of how those songs came about.”

Supergrass‘ set at Kendal Calling will form part of a busy summer schedule for the Oxford outfit, who are also due to perform at Nottinghamshire’s Splendour Festival, Camper Calling in Warwickshire and the South Facing Festival at Crystal Palace in London. The band reformed in 2019 after a nine-year break.

Fellow South Facing headliner Dizzee Rascal‘s appearance at Kendal Calling will provide the festival veteran with an opportunity to perform songs from his well-received 2020 album E3 AF. In their review of his seventh studio LP, Clash praised the Bow product for “navigating the perilous landscape of 2020 with remarkable assurance“, adding that “few other UK rappers can genuinely say they’re making some of their best work 20 years in the game – staying true to his roots while absorbing the sounds that currently defined East London, Dizzee has pulled off something special.”

Stockport alt-rock merchants Blossoms will take to the stage at Kendal Calling with a 2020 hit record of their own under their belt. Their third LP – Foolish Loving Spaces – was their second UK chart-topper. The group will tour Britain and Europe next autumn before providing support to The Killers on their 2022 UK Tour. The Streets also take to the festival circuit with new music in their locker. The Mike Skinner-led unit released their first new mixtape in nine years in 2020 in the form of twelve-track collection None of Us Are Getting Out of This Life Alive, which reached number #2 in the Official UK Albums Chart.

Welsh rock legends Manic Street Preachers are set to top the bill at this summer’s Camper Calling Festival. Supergrass and Pixie Lott are among the other headline acts to feature at the three-day showcase, which takes place during the August Bank Holiday weekend (27th-29th August) at Ragley Hall in Warwickshire. The Manics and Pixie Lott had been due to headline Camper Calling in 2020 before it was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In a press release shared with local paper the Stratford-upon-Avon Herald, festival organiser Shelley Mears said “The sense of community, joy and togetherness that festivals bring is something we are all longing for right now. Following the recent government announcement we are optimistically moving forward and planning for the best Camper Calling yet. We can’t wait to be back in a field dancing with you and your loved ones under the sun!”

Manic Street Preachers‘ performance at Camper Calling could coincide with the release of their highly-anticipated fourteenth studio album this summer. The Manics drip-fed early details of the as-yet-untitled LP via social media in January, telling fans to expect an ‘expansive‘ and ‘broader‘ record than 2018’s Resistance Is Futile.

The Blackwood trio, who recently marked the 20th anniversary of their historic 2001 gig in Cuba and their cult sixth record Know Your Enemy, are also due to perform two sold-out concerts in Cardiff this summer in support of the NHS. In an interview with NME last year, frontman James Dean Bradfield – fresh off the back off his acclaimed Victor Jara-inspired solo album Even In Exile – said: “The NHS is the biggest employer in Wales, and all around us we saw people giving and giving and giving and not getting enough back. We just thought that this should be for them.”

Supergrass, who are also due to perform at Nottinghamshire’s Splendour Festival and the South Facing Festival at Crystal Palace in London this summer, reformed in 2019 after a nine-year break. The Oxford outfit had been scheduled to tour the USA, Australia and Europe last year – topping off what was set to be a bumper 2020 with a comeback gig at Glastonbury – prior to the pandemic scuppering their plans. It has yet to be confirmed whether the group will bring new material on the road this summer, with thirteen years having passed since their last LP Diamond Hoo Ha (2008).

Pixie Lott can add to Camper Calling to a growing roll-call of festival commitments this year, with sets at Park Proms in Hampshire and Cleethorpes’ new POP-Live 2021 showcase already in the Mama Do star’s calendar. The Essex-raised singer is currently at work on her fourth studio album, which will be her first record in nearly eight years.

Other artists set to feature at Camper Calling include West Yorkshire pop-rockers Embrace, dance collective Symphonic Ibiza, Leeds indie five-piece The Pigeon Detectives, DJ-drummer duo The Stickmen, sibling folk-pop troupe The Magic Numbers, and Dodgy, who are best known for 1990s’ hit Good Enough. Tickets for Camper Calling are available through the festival website.

— Splendour Festival (@splendourfest) March 5, 2021

The Splendour Festival dates back to 2008 when it kicked off as a two-day event with performances from the likes of Ocean Colour Scene, Kate Nash, Rufus Wainwright and Paolo Nutini. The festival has grown exponentially since then, and the last Splendour in 2019 was the biggest to date, with 25,000 in attendance to see headliners Manic Street Preachers, The Specials, Rag’n’Bone Man and All Saints.

In an interview with the Nottingham Post, Splendour organiser Anton Lockwood explained that the festival would comply with the most up-to-date public health guidance. He said “We are working on the best information we have. Obviously there will be more detailed work on guidelines and protocol for events like Splendour. We are monitoring that and contributing to that and as those guidelines come out we’ll obviously follow those and abide by the legislation and all the guidelines. We are able to go ahead thanks to the amazing work of everyone getting the vaccine out there and a shout out to Nottingham Professor Jonathan Van-Tam (Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England) – I think he is brilliant – we will listen to his advice but we want to have a big party.”

Lockwood added “We want people to come out and see some great live music – that is what we are trying to achieve. I am really excited to be going to a gig to be honest and go and see some live music. We obviously want it to be safe, obviously we are going to follow the legislation and the guidelines that are in place that people far more expert than us are developing.”

Richard Ashcroft‘s headline set at Splendour was set to follow two sold-out comeback gigs at the London Palladium in May. The Wigan vocalist – who is currently working on an acoustic greatest hits album – returned to action last month with a cover of John Lennon’s 1973 track Bring On The Lucie (Freda Peeple).

Fellow Splendour headliners Supergrass, who reformed in 2019 after a nine-year hiatus, will eagerly await a return to the stage this year. The indie veterans had been due to tour the United States, Australia and Europe last year – topped off by a fifth scheduled appearance at Glastonbury – before all their live commitments were scuppered by the pandemic. The Oxford rockers, who produced one of the defining singles of the 1990s in Alright, last released an album in 2008 (Diamond Hoo Ha).

1980s pop icon Rick Astley continues to defy expectations (most recently by covering Slipknot and The Strokes on his TikTok account) and has enjoyed a steady period of critical success ever since his well-received 2016 comeback LP 50. The Lancastrian singer’s appearance at Splendour will compliment seventeen separate UK tour dates scheduled for this year, culminating in a gig at Newcastle’s Utilita Arena on November 12th.

Becky Hill‘s performance at Splendour should coincide with the release of her as-yet-untitled debut studio album this summer. The former The Voice UK contestant, who scored a 2014 number #1 single with Gecko (Overdrive), most recently provided vocals for Bruno Martini and Magnificence’s January release Wake Up With You.

Other acts confirmed for Splendour 2021 include British pop-rockers The Vamps, Heaven Is A Place on Earth singer Belinda Carlisle, London indie outfit Sleeper and up-and-coming Nottinghamshire artist Tori Sheard. Tickets for Splendour are available through the festival website.

After a very messy break-up and nine years out of limelight, it seems that Supergrass have now got back in their stride. Formerly one of the 90’s favourite bands, Supergrass went through a tumultuous period in the late 2000’s with the split spilling out onto social media. But, now they seem to be back and stronger than ever.

The gig will take place on the 21st of August and it will be performed from nowhere else than Manchester’s iconic 200 year old venue Band on the Wall. It will be for Goose Island and viewers will have to pay a £2 entry fee. If you do buy a ticket you will be in with a chance of winning a Virtual Reality headset and a four pack of Goose Island beer. There are five chances to do a virtual meet and greet with the band. The proceeds will go to a music therapy charity and CALM, the bands chosen charity.

After having nine years of not being together, it does not seem to have had an effect on Supergrass. Since having one of the messiest splits in recent memory, they seem to have brushed everything under the carpet and carried on as normal. Having played a string of sold out shows at Alexandra Palace and being scheduled to headline Kendal Calling festival until its cancellation this year.

Hopefully this drives the band on to want to actually get to play the live shows they have booked. So personally, I hope that we get many more chances to see them actually play live. But, I think that the chance of new music being released still feels miles away. Having only recently connected again, I would not want them to compromise anything by forcing the new music.

This though, can only be seen as a good thing as personally I never thought we would get to see the band back together again. Lucky for us though, it seems as though they have managed to quell any lingering embers from the fire that was their breakup. That only means that forward is the only direction for the newly reinstated Britpop gang.
