After releasing a suitably emo video statement filmed in a graveyard, You Me At Six announced that the time has come for them to bid farewell to the band. However, after keeping this a secret for some time, Franceschi told BBC “I’m grateful that we’re in a position where we can celebrate, in real time, with our fans.”

Throughout their career, the “Stay With Me” singers have released 8 studio albums, 2 of which (2014’s Cavalier Youth and 2021’s SUCKAPUNCH) reaching number 1 status, toured extensively and received glowing recognition through a variety of awards. These accomplishments have not gone amiss with the band members, as frontman Franceschi told NME “The thing that mattered the most is longevity, getting closer and closer to that 20 year mark. We don’t need this band for self-indulgent reasons. We’re all really satisfied with what we’ve done, let’s just tie a nice little ribbon or bow around it. You don’t want to be the last ones hanging around at the party. We want to be a band that bowed out, not one that was kicked out.”

When asked about plans for their upcoming farewell tour, the 33-year-old stated “We’ve worked out that our final gig is going to be 20 years to the day since our first ever band practice, which is wild. It wasn’t even deliberate.” However, fans will have to be patient for any more information regarding the tour, as dates are set to be announce in “a couple of months”.

The official update by the OCC confirmed 85% of the sales in the first week came from physical copies, half of which bought at independent stores, and showed frontman Josh Franscechi thank both their fans and haters, and say: “A truly incredible moment for our band. Our love for our fan base, and their support, is endless. They have been the light at the end of a tunnel of a pretty rough time. The support of our loved ones, family, partners, friends. Everyone who worked on this record. Dan Austin and the rest of our studio family who worked relentlessly to make this with us. Our second number one almost seven years later is just madness. In its strong debut week SUCKAPUNCH beat Barry Gibb’s third solo release Greenfields for the top spot, with Eminem’s acclaimed eleventh album Music To Be Murdered By left at third place with 35 consecutive weeks in the charts. At number 4 this week is Sleaford Mods’ Space Ribs that also premiered last week and is their first ever top 5 record, followed by The Good Times And The Bad Ones by Why Don’t We. The rest of the Top 10 album include Pop Smoke’s Shoot For The Stars Aim For The Moon, Harry Styles’ Fine Line, Shame’s Drunk Tank Pink, Taylor Swift’s Evermore and Little Mix’s Confetti.

SUCKAPUNCH came out last Friday via Underdog Records and AWAL, and includes a total of 11 tracks, composed and performed entirely by the band and produced by Dan Austin (Twin Atlantic, Pulled Apart By Horses, Maximo Park). The record features the previously released ‘What’s It Like‘ from 2019, their three 2020 singles ‘MAKEMEFEELALIVE‘, ‘Beautiful Way‘, ‘SUCKAPUNCH‘ all accompanied by official videos, as well as their latest New Year’s Day track ‘Adrenaline‘.

Straight upon its release, SUCKAPUNCH received predominantly positive reviews from all rock outlets, and huge praise from their loyal fan base. Clash points out that the passion and experimentation behind the record “could be what allows them to continue to brave the storm of the music industry for another fifteen years, should they still want to“. Giving it a solid 4/5, Kerrang! states that it “jabs with style, and demonstrates that, far from running out of ideas, this band remain intent on staying at the cutting edge of modern British rock“. Similarly, NME states that “it’s rare for a rock record to feel this exciting, especially coming from a band seven albums deep and, y’know, from Surrey, but every track ‘SUCKAPUNCH’ feels inspired in some way […] and you’d be hard-pressed not to keep the faith too“.

In addition to their admirable physical sales performance, the record also passed 10 million streams on Spotify, with similar achievement across all other major digital platforms. If government guidelines allow live events to go through later in the year, You Me At Six will embark on a busy Summer tour across the UK and Europe, with more information and tickets available at their website.

The event will include a Q&A with band members Josh Franceshci (vocals), Max Helyer (guitar), Chris Miller (lead guitar), Matt Barnes (bass), and Dan Flint (drums). Furthermore, viewers will be treated to exclusive footage from their 2019 Live From Gunnersville show at Gunnersbury Park in London.

After the release of the ‘Live From Gunnersville’ EP bundles – available only from the official website – sold out, the virtual evening with You Me At Six was arranged as a “thank you” to their fans who bought it. Now that the EP bundles have all sold out, which the band said they “didn’t really think would happen”, anyone who pre-orders the new album ‘SUCKAPUNCH’ by 4pm GMT on Saturday 16th January will also gain free access.

Along with both the live footage and chat with the band, attendees will be able to watch 20-minute documentary ‘Made In Thailand’ about the process of creating the new album, shot by Amazon Music. They posted all the information to Twitter today, while Max Helyer wrote, “Thanks to everyone so far who’s pre ordered the record!! Hope you guys enjoy it as much as we had making it and can’t wait for you all to hear it finally!”

The documentary uses the previously released songs ‘What’s It Like?‘, ‘Beautiful Way’ and ‘MAKEMEFEELALIVE‘ as soundtrack and serves as the final promotion before the official premiere of SUCKAPUNCH. The album drops next Friday and is available to pre-order on various formats and bundles here.

Kharma Studios is a little piece of paradise, located not too far away from the capital Bangkok and overlooking the Gulf of Thailand, providing first-class writing, recording and mixing facilities alongside private pool, bar and gym. The video immediately reveals You Me At Six have bassist Matt Barnes to take for arranging the breathtaking rental in the jungles of Thailand over studios in Wales and Belgium. Most of the documentary revolves around the unique setting of the studio with no distractions or stress where the band could simply focus on making the best music they possibly can do.

Rhythm guitarist Max Helyer reveals that the writing process started straight after releasing their previous record VI in October 2018. All band members talk about taking on new challenges, experimenting with new techniques and spending a lot of time working on the current body of work, all a result of being together for so long without any line-up changes and having already worked on six albums prior to SUCKAPUNCH.

Huge credit for the final result goes to producer Dan Austin who first collaborated with You Me At Six back in 2012 for the standalone single ‘The Swarm‘. Having previously worked with the likes of Biffy Clyro, Queens Of The Stone Age, Massive Attack, Doves and many others, he also produced the band’s sixth album VI (2018). The documentary portrays him as the sixth member of the Surrey quintet and someone they already know so well that working together feels like “being at home“, always pushing each other further and aiming to go as far as they can.

Last week, and exclusive video chat with singer Josh Fransceschi for NME revealed more details about the recording in Thailand and him almost leaving the band. The frontman also discussed writing in such isolated studio and the personal significance of SUCKAPUNCH: “It’s turned out that maybe I needed this record more than any of the other guys in the band. It’s been a great help to me actually listening to our record quite regularly, I’m not ashamed to say I listen to it a lot […] It takes me back to there and being part of it, and it also it helps me mull over some of the things I was feeling then, looking at it retrospectively.

Meanwhile, as the UK entered another nation-wide lockdown, You Me At Six were forced to postpone their socially distanced album launch on 14 January at Pryzm, Kingston and “will be rescheduled for when it’s safe“. However, the band’s Twitter post went on to reassure their fans that “the power behind this band has always been you guys and we will be making this the best album release that we can for you“.

You Me At Six have had a very busy and productive 2020 releasing a total of five new tracks, announcing their forthcoming album and engaging in various promotional activities. The band followed the momentum set by their previous release VI from October 2018 that peaked at #6 in the Official Album Charts, and the standalone premiere of the song ‘What’s It Like‘ that showcased a fresh new approach to their sound.

2020 started with the powerful ‘Our House (The Mess We Made)’  released in support of the Australian bushfire relief charity WIRES, the only new song to not be included in SUCKAPUNCH. In August 2020 the band dropped the explosive single ‘MAKEMEFEELALIVE‘ accompanied by a chaotic one-shot video. The official album and tracklist announcement came in September alongside the melodic and uplifting ‘Beautiful Way‘, shortly followed by the title track ‘SUCKAPUNCH‘ in November.

You Me At Six are celebrating the beginning of 2021 with the catchy and atmospheric ‘ADRENALINE‘, track 8 of the upcoming record and one of the first releases to kickstart the new year straight from 1 January. In addition, the Surrey rockers have donated a signed and personalised 12” copy of SUCKAPUNCH for the Teenage Cancer Trust’s Christmas Rocks initiative. The band came to Instagram to let fans know, saying that despite the anniversary being this year, they want to be with fans and hold an event to truly commemorate the event. They also confirmed that they’ll play the full album, which includes fan favourites ‘Underdog’ and ‘Stay With Me’.

Not only this, but fans will be treated to an additional few songs from You me At Six’s new album, ‘Suckapunch’ which is due on 15th January 2021. Tickets go on sale tomorrow, Thursday 16th December, at 11am.

The upcoming work is the band’s seventh LP since 2008 album ‘Take Off Your Colours’, and the title track was shared in late November as the fourth single. The group explained via Twitter that it was written about “reclaiming your own consciousness when you’ve lost it along the way.”

The dynamic and sci-fi-inspired music video premiered live at 8pm on YouTube. Director of the dystopian short film is Cass Virdee, also responsible for the visuals behind You Me At Six’ previous single ‘Beautiful Way‘. Additional credits go to Maria Salcher (producer), David Giles (co-producer), Alasdair Boyce (director of photography), Miles Berkley-Smith (editor) and Andi Chu (grading). This social media post from earlier today shares more details about the video: 

“The official video explores the idea of unplugging from the grid. A group of people attempts to break free from ‘the network’ only to be hunted and fought by its protector. Heavily taking influence from science fiction this video investigates life, freedom and addictionto technology. Experimenting with time itself SUCKAPUNCH switches between reversed and real-time sequenceelevating the surreal aesthetic“.

‘SUCKAPUNCH‘ is the third official single released so far this year from their forthcoming seventh studio album. At the end of August, You Me At Six premiered the chaotic video for ‘MAKEMEFEELALIVE‘ – the heavily distorted and punky anthem of feeling alive and in control, followed by the significantly more melodic and instrumentally complex ‘Beautiful Way‘ a month later.  Musically, the new single is a lot different and offers a completely different approach, sharing similarities with the more electronically-influenced ‘What’s It Like‘ from 2019 (also confirmed to feature on the upcoming record) and ‘Our House (The Mess We Made)‘ (released in February in support of Australian charity protecting endangered wildlife during the disastrous bush fires).

The four confirmed singles offer a rather diverse and fresh approach to the lyrical themes and compositions of their new album, that was also teased by Franceschi earlier this year as their heaviest material since Sinners Never Sleep (2011). With special attention to You Me At Six’s brilliant marketing campaigns and social media activity, and the clever choice of all promotional singles, SUCKAPUNCH is set for commercial success, and potentially becoming their second chart-topper since Cavalier Youth claimed number 1 at the UK Albums Chart in 2014 and is already certified gold. You Me At Six shared a teaser picture of all member crossing the famous road outside the studio, widely known from the cover of The Beatles’ album Abbey Road from 1969 recorded at the same place. The studio famously hosted the Liverpool legends for their innovative recording session in the 60s and remained globally associated with the band ever since. The post below shows the five band members following the steps of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison for an image that speaks volumes without further description.

The band have remained very vague in what is coming out and when, and apart from the ambiguous “coming soon…” in the social media posts there is not any other information yet. It is very likely going to be a new track, or a live recording or rework on their well-known hits or single releases. Most recently, Nothing But Thieves released and orchestral version of their single ‘Impossible‘ off their latest record Moral Panic, recorded at Abbey Road Studios. While it is unlikely that You Me At Six will follow the same aporoach, the teaser does suggest a special new release that is definitely going to capture everyone’s attention.

So far the band have released two powerful tracks of their upcoming album SUCKAPUNCH. At the end of August this year, You Me And Six dropped the punky “MAKEMEFEELALIVE“ accompanied by a spectacular music video suggesting a follow-up to the dynamic story. Most recently, the band released the second single Beautiful Way that offered a more melodic but equally electric sound and lifted the expectations for the new record even higher.

Judging by the first two singles, the band’s upcoming seventh release is going to sound heavier and more focused that ever heard before. In an exclusive recent interview for Calm, frontman John Franceschi discussed the inspiration behind the record, its lyrical themes and how important spending time in Thailand was for the entire recording and production process. He went on to state:

“Music has always been good for the soul. It offers an escapism from reality and has the power to connect people to happy, bad or vulnerable places. When someone is feeling misunderstood, they can feel like music understands and accepts them. It’s an unbelievably powerful thing, but also comes with responsibility.”

‘Beautiful Way’ follows ‘MAKEMEFEELALIVE’, released earlier this month. For a niche and dated cultural reference, it sounds like ‘Planetary (GO!)’ from My Chemical Romance’s Danger Days. Indeed, what with the lyrical themes and the video storylines that You Me At Six have been releasing recently, we might wonder if SUCKAPUNCH is heading in a similar direction to My Chemical Romance’s fourth album – although it is very clear that You Me At Six’s seventh offering is going to be much heavier than we are used to from them.

NME asked lead singer Josh Franceschi whether ‘Beautiful Way’ was a good indicator of how SUCKAPUNCH will sound sonically. He replied with this: “It takes the traditional You Me At Six sound and gives it a fresh feel which is what we wanted for this album.

“On our last album ‘VI’, it felt like we were sparring with the idea of the next step for the band. With ‘SUCKAPUNCH’ it feels like we’re there. We now understand how to implement our interests in hip-hop and R&B without it feeling forced or contrived. I don’t think anybody has heard our band do what we are doing right now.”

Speaking to both Kerrang! and NME, Franceschi has let the word “masterpiece” slip out. We have to wonder if the term is used partly in recognition of the themes that You Met At Six are choosing to tackle on their seventh album. The standalone single that they released earlier this year, ‘Our House (The Mess We Made)’ betrays overwhelming distress at the state of the climate. It was written during the outbreak of bushfires in Australia at the beginning of year, and it strikes me as one of the most sophisticated, ambitious releases I have ever heard from You Me At Six. Little could they have known just how many crises and injustices we would find ourselves facing by now.

‘MAKEMEFEELALIVE’ is concerned for “the lost generation”. The second verse goes, “let’s start the conversation / how do we alienate them / 2020 invasion of the senses”. ‘Beautiful Way’ turns this inward, a song about wrestling with identity, coping mechanisms, mistakes and “the wear and tear of being a human being”.

Both of their latest videos present these heavy themes with dystopian storylines. ‘Beautiful Way’ could be a trailer for a new Mad Max film, set in the middle of a desert, containing intricate and absorbing dance/martial arts routines, while the band powers through their new single on an outdoor set on a different plain. Their stage is marked out with red sand that looks eerily more like blood as the video progresses.

A further recent offering from the band is the lyric video to ‘MAKEMEFEELALIVE’ which contains footage of drummer Dan Flint skydiving (something that makes him feel alive, you see?) Although the song is heavy, the video is seriously feel-good; Flint’s adrenaline feels contagious. Certainly, these are explosive, energetic releases from a band who know exactly where they want to be in the game.
