Hitting the charts on the 28th of August, Over Now is the Scottish DJ Harris and Canadian singer The Weeknd at their very best. Ripe with groovy production, bright, layered synth, and a backing track reminiscent of a 1980s soul-ballad, Over Now draws out The Weeknd and Harris’ strengths in a way that is undeniable. 

More than familiar with exploring themes of love and heartbreak in his music, The Weeknd leads the breakup bop as he sings about an unnamed ex. The Starboy beseeches them to leave him alone, emotionally distancing himself as he croons “I don’t really care if the tears fall down your face/You know you play the victim every time.”

The Weeknd’s apathetic lyricism continues when he sings the ice-cold words “You always need that attention/Feedin’ the press, but we don’t speak/But we’re both with somebody else/So please stop callin’ me.” 

Over Now is trademark Harris. The track’s buoyant production gives it a fluidity that spans genres of funk, R&B, and soul/pop ballad. Over Now upkeeps the funk revival present in Harris’ music since his phenomenally successful collaboration album, Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1, and fans would not have it any other way. 

As this is the latest release from Harris since his collaboration with Rag’N’Bone Man on Giant, fans were ecstatic at the arrival of Over Now. Especially with The Weeknd added into the mix, who has seen recent commercial success for his widely popular song, Blinded by the Lights.

An accompanying music video to Over Now was dropped in unison with the brand new track. Harris shared the Over Now video to his official YouTube channel, which has gathered a gargantuan 1.4m views in just one day.

A digitally rendered dream, the Over Now video creates a Blade Runner and Daft Punk inspired world, a visual feast of multicoloured animations and psychedelic avatars. In the video, an avatar of The Weeknd transitions between desert landscapes and a thriving metropolis, drawing fans through a futuristic animated world. Calvin Harris took to Instagram to ring in his exciting new collaboration. The Acceptable in the Eighties hitmaker shared a snap of himself and The Weeknd with his 9.9m followers yesterday, the post has gathered over 57,000 likes from Harris’ worldwide fanbase.

The Weeknd, real name Abel Tesfaye, also took to Instagram to share Over Now with the world. Featuring a short montage clip of wacky Over Now music video, the post has garnered a massive 2.1m views. 

Over Now is not the only project that Calvin Harris has kept himself busy with during lockdown. Recently, the DJ and producer released a series of acid-house EPs under his musical alias, Love Generator. Last month, Harris teamed up with Steve Lacy on Live Without You. Earlier this month Lana Del Rey paid tribute to the late Leonard Cohen who passed away on November 7, aged 82. Del Rey said:

Cohen – and outstanding lyricist – was also a prolific poet and was taught by his muse the legendry poet Irving Layton who passed away in 2006.
Lana Del Rey’s last album was Honeymoon, released in 2015. 2016 saw her touring the festival circuit. Both artists demonstrate how powerful their influences are and prove an apt collaboration.  The lyrics have been described as ‘creepy': judge for yourself.

He will be playing tracks from his latest release Starboy. The album, which will be released on November 25, is his third studio LP and features a guest appearance from Daft Punk on the title track. The single topped the charts in seven countries.

The R&B singer will be performing the tour, called ‘Starboy, the Legend of the Fall, in the UK in early March next year, and will be stopping off in Manchester, London, Glasgow, Newcastle, Birmingham, and Leeds.

It has been revealed that Bryson Tiller will be supporting The Weeknd on the European leg of the tour. According to Metro, he posted details of the full world tour on Twitter, he wrote, ‘NEW TOUR PHASE 1′ alongside 80s sci-fi inspired artwork.

The singer played his first ever London show in 2012 at The Wilton Music Hall. Tickets for these arena shows will sell out fast. Fact magazine states that The Weeknd released ‘False Alarm’ back in September, the second from his latest album.

‘Starboy’ has the catchy potential to rival Daft Punk’s 2013 number one single ‘Get Lucky’ featuring Pharrell Williams, which propelled Daft Punk into a new fan base, and Pharrell Williams with a gigantic international solo career.

Original Daft Punk fans will welcome any return and collaboration. The French duo rose to stardom with the release of their second and third singles: ‘Da Funk’ –released in 1995 – and the catchy ‘Around the World’ (1997) both from their debut album Homework (1997).

Immediately popular in their home nation – Homework reaching number 3 in the album charts – Daft Punk hit the UK music scene with massive acclaim. Daft Punk’s second album Discovery (2001) escalated the duo’s popularity in the UK, reaching number 2 – the single ‘One More Time’ proving a dynamic opening track/single which peaked their popularity in the noughties, and achieved number 2 in the singles chart (the highest charting single by far until the 2013 ‘Get Lucky’.

The Weeknd – Abel Makkonen Tesfaye – is a Canadian singer/song writer/producer and has released three studio albums: Kiss Land (2013), Beauty Behind the Madness (2015), and Starboy (2016). What’s left to see if the collaboration with Daft Punk will propel The Weeknd into the UK music scene.
