The festival that has started last Thursday 22nd July and was one of the first outdoor shows to go ahead this summer, has been stopped by heavy rain with lightning and floods.
The organisers started to worry as soon as the torrential rain hits the field on Sunday 25th and Twitted:
“The show has stopped due to the storm and the risk of lightning. Your safety is our top priority“. Adding: “In case of lightning please avoid sheltering under trees and metal objects like flag poles. Stay calm and seated until it passes. We will resume once its safe to do so“.

Unfortunately, the weather conditions made it unsafe to continue and organisers had to stop it completely: “Due to flooding we will no longer be able to proceed with the festival. If you can safely leave the site this evening please do so as soon as possible. We are working on getting everyone off site as safely and quickly as possible“. Organisers offered shelter at the Campsite Office for those unable to leave the site due to various reasons: “where we will be providing details on the provisions we will be making for you. In the meantime please stay as warm, hydrated and dry as possible“. Few festival-goers were forced to leave their belongings on-site but were assured they can come back the next day to pick them up. Met Office warning quickly upgraded to yellow with info about “Flooding of homes and businesses is likely and could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater and isolated lightning strikes”. “Heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms are likely to cause surface water flooding“. Among the acts due to play on Sunday was Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Craig David, Primal Scream and De La Soul. Even though the last day of Standon Calling didn’t go as planned, it was a blast for those who attended.

After having to cancel 2020’s event due to the global pandemic, the festival organisers have posed 22nd-25th July 2021 as their date for the festival, in accordance to the governments ‘road map’ out of lockdown, that was announced last week.

In a statement, the festival director and founder Alex Trenchard said,  “It brings me incredible joy and happiness to announce the return of Standon Calling. It’s no secret that the past year has been an incredibly tough one not just for the festival world, but for all of us longing to return to some degree of normality and longing to celebrate and dance together once again.”

The Hertfordshire festival, which originally began as a birthday barbecue and grew in to an annual event, were ‘heartbroken’ to have to cancel their 15th Anniversary, which would have been last year. However, the organisers have stated they are back with an even bigger event to make up for the belated anniversary.

Headliners for the 2021 festival include Bastille, Primal Scream, Hot Chip and Craig David. Mystery Jets, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Biig Piig and many others will also be performing at the boutique music festival. Comedians Ed Gamble and Zoe Lyons will take centre stage in the comedy tent with the annual dog show and costume parade also going ahead. 

Trenchard went on to state, “This year’s line-up is my favourite to date, from huge headliners to some of the most exciting new sounds/artists going and the return of some huge family highlights from over the years – I can’t wait to welcome you all this summer.”

Labelled as one of the friendliest festival crowds, Standon Calling 2021 will certainly be welcomed by music fanatics come July 2021. This is just one of the latest UK festivals that have confirmed their return in summer 2021, with Reading & Leeds, Isle of Wight and Latitude confirming their immense return too.
