After securing her win as ‘Best Hip Hot Act’ at Wednesday evening’s 26th annual MOBO Awards, Mercury Prize-winning UK rapper Little Simz has unveiled her latest EP, ‘Drop 7’, her first major release since ‘No Thank You’ in December 2022. ‘Drop 7’ follows ‘Drop 6’ which was released in 2020, making ten years since the musician shared ‘Drop 1’ in August 2014. The London-based artist has also been nominated for a staggering three BRIT awards this year, including Best British Album, Best Hip Hop/Rap/Grime Act, and the prestigious British Artist of the Year.

Simz took to Instagram to voice her thoughts on the release, as well as her love for her fans, commenting: “Love you all, I need you to know. Your continued support gives me the confidence to step outside my comfort zone and experiment with the thing I love most like any true artist should. So thank you for giving me grace and allowing me the space to do so. hope you enjoy.”

She also revealed her excitement surrounding her new website visuals, adding: “Also my website is fire. Will be giving exclusive news and more only to those signed up to my mailing list so be the first to get the latest”.

The EP was co-created by music producer, songwriter, and DJ James Jacob, who composed the soundtrack for A24’s exhilarating, coming-of-age film How To Have Sex. Crafted by artists Marco Grey and Jeremy Cole, the black and white artwork depicts Simz wearing some kind of futuristic, chrome armour with a butterfly floating next to her, with her new highly stylised website showcasing the same sci-fi, avant-garde imagery. Once on the explore page, the site presents fans with a series of different symbols with options to buy merchandise, stay connected on her social media pages, join her mailing list or stream the new EP, which can be selected by clicking the same butterfly symbol, a thread in the album’s storyline that remains unclear thus far.

Following a sold-out UK tour last November, the British Vogue cover star appears to be at the top of her game, with plenty more exciting announcements planned for the year ahead. ‘Drop 7′ is out now on Forever Living Originals via AWAL Recordings.

At this point, she literally needs no introduction. But now, after missing out on the award in 2019, Little Simz has claimed her well-earned trophy at The Mercury Prize. The coveted ceremony filters through the mountains of incredible British music from the last year and chooses a highlight that has defined the sonic landscape for the age. Dave may have been a sensible choice back in 2019; but in 2022… Little Simz was the only choice.

And the winner of the 2022 Mercury Prize with @FreeNow_UK is… @LittleSimz – ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introvert’ #MercuryPrize pic.twitter.com/PqMWA59e0C

— Mercury Prize (@MercuryPrize) October 18, 2022

This puts Little Simz in a very respectable position this year after she also bagged the title of best newcomer at the Brit awards earlier this year – despite it being more than 7 years since she crashed onto the scene – as well as her appearances at Reading and Leeds Festival. Simz well deserved recognition was met with rapturous applause as she gave her short and sweet acceptance speech, “There was times in the studio when I didn’t know if I was going to finish this record, I was feeling all the emotions and really going through it. He stuck by me and pushed me to deliver this album for you guys.”

In a statement made by the Mercury Prize judges, they explain, “This accomplished and complex yet entirely accessible album is the work of someone striving constantly to push herself.” Continuing, “It deals with themes both personal and political while putting them against music that is as sophisticated as it is varied. The Mercury Prize is all about shining a light on albums of lasting value and real artistry. Sometimes I Might Be Introvert has both.”

The original performance night was supposed to take place 6 weeks ago, on September 8th, but the night was postponed after the news broke of Queen Elizabeth II’s death. In the days following the announcement many members of the public, as well as revered artists, made their respects to the Queen. You can take a look at a select few of those moments here.

My fundamental belief that Simz is the deserving winner of this prize doesn’t mean to take away from the achievements of all of the artists that even managed to be nominated for the award. Yard Act, Self Esteem, Nova Twins, Kojey Radical, and all of the other names featured here have given massive contributions to the ever-expanding repertoire of fantastic British music. But when you boil down thoughtful lyricism, creative production, and a bizarrely effective portrayal of a political system… you’ve just got to give it some credit.

Little Simz has made her directorial debut with a new short film titled ‘I Love You, I Hate You’. The track, taken from her critically acclaimed album Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, does not actually feature in the music video; ‘I Love You, I Hate You’ recieved its own official video 3 weeks back. Watch the new short film below:

The title is mildly deceiving, as it is not an extended music video for the track, but simply a short film with the same title as the track. Instead of acting as visuals or a music video for ‘I Love You, I Hate You’, the film decides to deal with themes presented by the track, namely loving in an on-and-off manner.

At 22 minutes in length, it features Little Simz taking to acting, playing a character named Sage who is a stand-in for Simz herself. It features an intimate scene with a loved one, bumping into an old friend, and the three of them chilling looking at baby pictures. The film is stripped back, minimalistic, focusing on the minutiae of daily life, or more specifically, her creative struggles in writing for her then-upcoming album. Moving headfirst through a writers block, Little Simz semi-reluctantly agrees to take shrooms with a friend to break through the rut. Balancing maintaining friendships and relationships with keeping up her artistry, the struggles that the film deals with are grounded, making the stuff of life into the stuff of art.

Additionally, the film deals with themes mentioned in the original track. Unpacking abandonment she felt as a child, with scenes of her running through forests as a child and as an adult, the film reflects the tracks discussion of her absent father. The track is much more punchy and aggressive in sound than the film, which mostly has a serene vibe, reinforced by the location; a remote house in the country, serving as her writers retreat.

It is an ambitious piece, made possible by WeTransfer and featuring an extensive crew. Little Simz is proving herself to be an adaptable and adept creator, now adding director to her CV. The video, which does not feature the eponymous track, instead features another track from the album, ‘I See You’, over its credits. The film also features ‘Red Lights’ by SAULT, who Simz collaborated with on the track ‘You From London’ on the album Nine. It also features three tracks from Nala Sinephro, as well as a track from Simz’s first EP titled ‘Piece Of Mind’.

UK rapper Little Simz has released her new single ‘Rollin Stone’ ahead of her fourth studio album ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introvert‘.

‘Rollin Stone’ is the third single to be released from Little Simz’s upcoming album, following on from the singles ‘Introvert’ and ‘Woman’. The new album, which is the artists first since 2019’s ‘Grey Area’ is due to be released this September 3rd. Simz’s new single has set the bar high for her anticipated album. The unique beat and direct, honest bars in ‘Rollin Stone’ means we can only expect promising things from the entire album.

Back in April this year Little Simz spoke to Simran Hans from ‘The Observer‘ about her upcoming album ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introvert’. Simz revealed that the album was predominately written during lockdown. Each single released so far expresses the vulnerability of the rapper in the public eye, through evocative and politically charged lyrics. ‘Rollin Stone’ captures her talent for bold, hard-hitting lyricism. To the Observer, Little Simz explained that “I’m just very to myself and I didn’t know how to really navigate that, especially coming in this industry where you’re expected to have this extroverted persona all the time.” The new album, which will feature ‘Rollin Stone’, is titled appropriately. The theme that will run throughout is that Little Simz is an artist defying the extroversion that is expected in the music industry. It is no. wonder that ‘Introvert’ which was released in Aprils set to be the first track on the album. Political charge within Little Simz’s music is nothing new and is what has drawn people to her music. Her single ‘Venom’, featured in the album ‘GREY matter’, discusses feminism and mental health. The track’s popularity was boosted by its inclusion in the soundtrack of British Netflix show Top Boy – which she herself acted in. ‘Venom’ then went viral on Tik Tok in April 2021. The far-reaching reception of her music, which include important and relevant topics, show the magnitude Little Simz has in the UK music scene. It will be interesting to see the response that ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introvert‘ receives. Little Simz has been added to headline at this years All Point East Festival, in London’s Victoria Park. The headlining of this festival will come at the perfect time to celebrate the musical talent and energy of the brilliant artist.
