American singer-songwriter Sophia Allison, better known as Soccer Mommy, has shared her take on the iconic 2002 Sheryl Crow song “Soak Up The Sun”. Allison, who is currently on tour in support of her critically acclaimed album Sometimes, Forever, recorded the cover in recognition of an artist she deems a major influence. In an interview with The New York Times, the singer voiced her admiration for Crow:

“She has so many songs that are these massive hits that, at least for someone my age, you can’t have grown up and not heard those songs. She has a knack for saying something hard, but making it feel like she’s ready to acknowledge it and be cool with this hard acceptance.”

Listen to Soccer Mommy’s cover of “Soak Up The Sun” below:

Allison, however, is also a brilliant songwriter in her own right. The 26-year-old, who was introduced to the guitar at age six, began posting songs as Soccer Mommy in 2015, before landing a recording contract with Fat Possum. In 2017, she dropped out of college to pursue a full-time music career and has gone on to release three albums, the most recent of which was named one of the best albums of 2023 by the likes of The New York Times, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Billboard, Stereogum, and more.

The Line Of Best Fit described Sometimes, Forever as “an astounding artistic accomplishment that deserves to propel Allison to the very highest ranks of the indie world”, while The New Yorker pronounced the record Soccer Mommy’s “gnarliest and most resplendent, fashioning poppy melodies, disarming lyrics, and twisted sounds into dismayed songs of young adulthood.”

Listen to lead single “Shotgun” below:

The Daniel Lopatin-produced album sees Allison explore new sonic landscapes, including shoegaze and industrial noise, cementing her status as one of the most gifted songwriters making rock music right now. Once again, the singer taps into the turn-of-the-millenium sensibilities and confessional lyricism she’s known for, this time inspired by the idea that neither sorrow nor happiness is eternal. Sometimes, Forever is a glimpse into the mind of an artist who synthesizes everything — retro sounds, personal tumult, the relatable disorder of modern life — into original music that feels built to last a long time.

In 2022, following the release of the album, Allison completed a largely sold-out international headline tour and hosted Roblox’s most successful Listening Party to date with 10.8 million unique visitors.

American singer-songwriter, and all-around indie icon, Soccer Mommy has shared a new single from her forthcoming 5th studio LP Sometimes, Forever. The single comes as the 3rd offering from the album so far after ‘Unholy Affliction’ and ‘Shotgun’ were released earlier this year. Set for release on June 4th, the album was produced by Daniel Lopatin – more popularly known by his onstage persona Oneohtrix Point Never. You can look into pre-order information here, and check out the Alex Ross Perry directed cemetery-ridden music video below.

Sometimes, Forever will act as a follow-up to 2020’s critical success that was color theory. The critical success of that album confirmed Soccer Mommy to be slightly more than the bedroom indie staple that her other albums like Clean may have led us to believe. In a conversation with NME, Soccer Mommy – this time less popularly known by her offstage name Sophie Allison – commented that ‘Bones’ was initially drafted to be a part of a rom-com. But since the song’s creation, Allison decided to keep it for herself. When questioned about the song’s meaning she explained it was basically, “about struggling with the parts of yourself that you don’t like in a relationship.” Before lightening the mood a little with, “It’s about wanting to become better for someone and feeling like you’re standing in your own way.”

Allison will also be taking the new tunes to a few UK in-store gigs shortly after the release of the album. Fans in Leeds, Liverpool, Brighton, and Bristol could get some of the earliest tastes of the new sounds this June before the tour kicks off in the states in October. It was also announced that the pre-sale for the rest of the tour (which unfortunately already kicked off this morning (May 19th)) would donate a portion of its proceeds to Planned Parenthood. While the presale has already come and gone, the remainder of the tickets go on sale tomorrow morning (May 20th) at 10am. With additional support on the US leg from a pair of Canadian artists – Singer-songwriter Helena Deland, and indie rock outfit TOPS – the UK’s support slots are yet to be filled.
