Paul McCartney has hinted at releasing a new album in 2025, marking his first studio project since 2020’s McCartney III. During his monthly fan Q&A, McCartney shared his New Year’s resolution: “Finish a new album!” He explained that while he’s been working on new songs, they had to be set aside during his extensive ‘Got Back’ tour, which wrapped up last week in London. Now, he hopes to return to those unfinished pieces and complete the project.

If released, this album would follow the success of McCartney III, which debuted at No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and earned a score of 81/100 on Metacritic. That album, recorded during the pandemic, reflected a stripped-back, introspective approach with McCartney playing nearly all the instruments himself. During promotion, he told DJ Zane Lowe that much of the process stemmed from having time on his hands, using music as “the greatest therapy” by retreating to a quiet space with his guitar to “tell his troubles to it.”

The potential 2025 album, however, comes after a period of live performances and could reflect the energy from shows across North and South America, Australia and Europe. The ‘Got Back’ tour, which began in 2022, saw McCartney revisiting Beatles classics and solo hits, often accompanied by poignant moments such as performing his Christmas classic ‘Wonderful Christmastime’ in Manchester and sharing the stage with Ringo Starr in London. It’s likely that some of the new material was inspired or developed during this tour.

One question on fans’ minds is whether McCartney will continue the DIY ethos of McCartney III or collaborate with other artists, as he did extensively on 2018’s Egypt Station. While McCartney III resonated deeply with audiences for its authenticity, a collaborative effort could open new creative doors, allowing McCartney to engage with younger musicians or experiment with new sounds.

Fans have taken to social media to speculate on what the new album might bring. One fan expressed hope that McCartney would embrace the warmth of his ageing voice, crafting simple, heartfelt songs rather than chasing trends and chart positions. McCartney’s ability to adapt without losing his core identity has been a hallmark of his career, from pioneering electronic music on McCartney II to influencing heavy metal with ‘Helter Skelter.’

While the album’s themes remain a mystery, it will not be a covers or greatest hits collection, according to McCartney’s comments. Instead, it promises fresh material, created in his traditional style of composing with a guitar or piano. Despite his opposition to AI-generated music, McCartney has embraced technology to assist with projects, such as extracting John Lennon’s vocals for the release of ‘Now and Then.’ McCartney gave ‘Now and Then’ it’s live debut back in October, playing it to fans in Uruguay.

A 2025 release would coincide with the 50th anniversary of Venus and Mars by Paul McCartney and Wings, though that album has already been reissued through McCartney’s Archive Collection.

Regardless of timing, a new album would further cement McCartney’s legacy as one of music’s most enduring and innovative artists. At 82, McCartney remains full of surprises, and his next chapter is eagerly anticipated by fans of all ages.

With the funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth II approaching, guidelines have been issued by the government on how the public can participate in the event. Set to take place on the morning of Monday 19th September 2022, line routes in London and Windsor have been established for the public to follow the Queen’s coffin on its journey. The funeral will also be broadcasted on giant screens erected across the country to enable people to watch the ceremony.

Screens for public viewing will be located in London’s Hyde park, centenary Square in Birmingham, Sheffield’s Cathedral Square, Holyrood Park in Edinburgh, Carlisle’s Bitts Park and Coleraine Town Hall located in Northern Ireland. If you are unable to get to one of the Big screens, selected cinemas will also be broadcasting the funeral. For those watching at home, the funeral service and the processions will be available to watch live via BBC one, ITV and Sky.

As the world remembers Queen Elizabeth II for her time on the throne, many are left reminiscing about her influence within the arts, particularly those whom she has knighted and awarded for their service within music. Within Queen Elizabeth II’s long and storied 70-year reign, some of music’s most influential artists have received a royal nod of recognition. Named the Order of the British Empire, it consists of five levels of importance. The first is MBE, otherwise known as Member; the next is Officer (OBE), second to the top is Knight and Dame Commander (KBE and DBE) and the most important is Knight and Dame Grand Cross (GBE).

Here are some of the most notable names to be honoured by Queen Elizabeth II. Many know Bob Geldolf as the organiser and figurehead for Live Aid; not surprisingly, he was given an honorary knighthood by the late monarch on 10th June 1986. Otherwise known as the fifth Beatle, George Martin was given the GBE title in 1996 for his work as a record producer. The Beatles band member and solo artist Paul McCartney was knighted by the late Queen on 11th March 1997, fellow bandmate Ringo Starr joined the knighthood ranks at a ceremony on 29th December 2017.

Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger took the knee in 2003 for his knighthood, fellow singer Ray Davies, frontman for The Kinks, was knighted in 2017. Some inductees are not English but are considered for an Order of the British empire due to their time spent within the UK; Barry Gibb from The Bee Gees is an example of this ruling; although the group are often linked to Australia, Gibb was knighted in 2017 due to the amount of time spent within the UK.

Even though most artists put forward for the award accept the invitation, many have refused to accept the Order of the British Empire. Famously David Bowie refused a CBE in 2000 and a Knighthood (GBE) in 2003. Speaking on his decision, the “Starman” singer gave the following statement, “I would never have any intention of accepting anything like that. I seriously don’t know what it’s for. It’s not what I spent my life working for. It’s not my place to make a judgement on Jagger, it’s his decision. But it’s just not for me.“

Sir Paul McCartney has treated fans to a once in a lifetime event during a performance in Washington. McCartney sang along with a video of his late bandmate John Lennon. Within the singer’s “Got Back” tour, the audience could see the duo perform the classic hit “I’ve Got A Feeling” together.

The atmospheric performance was made possible by a video of Lennon’s isolated vocals, footage used in Peter Jackson’s hit docu-series The Beatles: Get Back was also played in the background. McCartney has revealed that the notion of having Lennon sing with his band was first actioned by Jackson, the idea led the filmmaker to create a track of Lennon’s isolated vocals. The famed artist recalls a text message from Jackson concerning the proposal, “We can extract John’s voice, and he can sing with you. (I replied) ‘Oh, yeah!”

This was not the only tribute made to Lennon, McCartney also dedicated the track “Here Today” to the musical icon. The song was originally written in 1982 by McCartney, and although not released as a single, the track is an important item within the singer’s lengthy solo discography. The song was written shortly after the tragic passing of Lennon and was penned as a tribute to the singer and the pair’s relationship. McCartney shared with the audience his feelings concerning Lennon’s passing, stating that he regretted that he had not “properly told (Lennon) he loved him while he had the chance“.

The death of Lennon is widely known as a pivotal and tragic moment within cultural history; his murder sent shockwaves of grief and disbelief around the world. The singer was shot on 8th December 1980 by an apparent fan whom he had autographed a book for earlier in the day, The 40-year-old singer’s ashes were scattered within a section of New York’s Central Park, the iconic Strawberry Fields memorial was later created to honour Lennon’s legacy.

The concert also saw McCartney pay tribute to fellow Beatle George Harrison; the singer used a ukulele which Harrison had gifted him for the song “Something”. The track was originally written by Harrison and is included within the group’s 1969 album Abbey Road. Conspiracies concerning the song’s meaning have often surfaced, a leading notion states that the track was written as a love song to Harrison’s first wife Pattie Boyd.

The 2021 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony took place on Saturday 30th October in Cleveland, this year saw the ceremony return as a live event after previous years live-streamed due to COVID-19. The night also boasted an array of special guests, memorable performances and of course the winning inductees and more awards. During the induction of Foo Fighters McCartney took the stage to sing their praises. The former Beatle gave his impassioned speech before closing the evening with an unforgettable performance. McCartney and the Foo Fighters concluded the ceremony with a now legendary rendition of the Beatles track “Get Back”. The performance saw McCartney and frontman Dave Grohl showcase their vocal prowess.

Within McCartney’s speech, the singer drew comparisons between himself and former Nirvana drummer, Dave Grohl. He noted the similar journeys which both have taken and the tragedies in which they both suffered. In 1980 the world stood still when it was announced that Beatles member John Lennon had been shot. Grohl also lost a friend and bandmate, fourteen years after Lennon’s death the news of Kurt Cobain’s suicide left everyone in shock. Before they took the podium to make their own speeches, the Foo Fighters performed three of their most loved tracks, “Best Of You”, “Everlong” and “My Hero”.

McCartney discussed the pair’s connection, “I fell into rock and roll, I joined a group. My group was the Beatles. Like I say, the world changed. Dave did a similar kind of thing. He joined a group, Nirvana. We had a great time with our groups, but then eventually tragedy happened, and my group broke up, The same happened with Dave: His group broke up under tragic circumstances. And so then the question is, what do you do now? And we both were presented with that question. In my case, I thought, Well, I’ll make an album where I play all the instruments myself. So I did that. Dave’s group broke up, what’s he to do? He makes an album where he plays all the instruments himself. Do you think this guy’s stalking me?”

Another highlight of the evening was the induction of powerhouse Jay-Z, the artist’s introduction video included a list of the world’s most talented individuals. The video featured Beyonce, Samuel L. Jackson and comedian Chris Rock with the official induction speech given by Dave Chappelle. However, the real surprise came after the video. A pre-recorded message by former President Barack Obama left audience members in awe.

The politician had this to say, “I’ve turned to Jay-Z’s words at different points in my life, whether I was brushing dirt off my shoulder on the campaign trail, or sampling his lyrics on the Edmund Pettus Bridge on the 50th anniversary of the Selma march to Montgomery, Today, Jay-Z is one of the most renowned artists in history and an embodiment of the American dream, a dream he has helped make real for other young people like him.”

Other inductees included Tina Turner, Carole King, The Go-Gos and Todd Rundgren. Other winners included Clarence Avant, who was given the Ahmet Ertegun Award. The prize is given to those who not performing industry professionals but who still embody passion and hold musical influence. The Musical Excellence Award was given to three highly influential acts, LL Cool J, Billy Preston and Randy Rhodes. The Early Influence Award was handed to pioneers Kraftwerk, Charley Patton and icon Gil Scott Heron famed for his poem, “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”.

The ceremony is available to watch on HBO on 20th November, the event can also be streamed via HBO Max.

Tributes have been pouring in for music legend Charlie Watts, The Rolling Stones drummer tragically lost his life on Tuesday.

It was announced this week that the iconic musician passed away peacefully at a London hospital at the age of 80 whilst surrounded by his family. The news came just three weeks after it was announced that Watts would not be playing with the band on their US tour No Filter due to health issues. The famed drummer’s health issues were reported after an emergency medical procedure, the band had expected the issue to be temporary and that he would later re-join them.

No official cause of death has been announced, a spokesperson for Watt’s released the following statement announcing the musician’s tragic passing. “It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Charlie Watts. He passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family, Charlie was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also, as a member of The Rolling Stones, one of the greatest drummers of his generation. We kindly request that the privacy of his family, band members and close friends is respected at this difficult time.”

Watts was often regarded as the cool member of the Rolling Stones and described as universally likeable by all. Watts was a long-standing member of the band and was the Rolling Stones’ drummer for all 30 albums and tours. Watts’ talent can be heard on celebrated albums such as the 1968 release Beggars Banquet and the band’s most recent release Blue & Lonesome released in 2016. The English musician made his first appearance in the stones in February 1963 and remained a member until his death. Along with other musical icons such as Sir Paul McCartney and Elton John, Watts’ bandmates have been posting heart-warming tributes to their fallen band member and friend.

Jagger took to his Instagram to share a simple and emotional post that features a photo of Watts behind a drum set, the post does not include a caption but features an array of comments leaving their condolences.

Born on 2nd June 1941 Watts is best known for his time as the Rolling Stones’ drummer, but the multi-talented artist also held a passion for Jazz. Watts also performed with his own band called the Charlie Watts Quintet whilst touring and recording with the Rolling Stones. A man of multiple talents, Watts originally sought a career in graphic design and was trained within the field, but his love for Jazz pulled him towards his passion for music and the drummer joined the band Blues Incorporated. Within his performances at various rhythm and blues bars and clubs across London Watts would meet future bandmates Jagger, Richards and Jones. Watts is often regarded as one of the greatest drummers of time, he can be found within various top 100 lists complied by multiple publications and institutions. As well as his musical talent Watts was repeatedly recognised for his fashion prowess, The Daily Telegraph has included the drummer within their list of the World’s Best Dressed Men. Fashion bible Vanity has also confirmed his firm standing in fashion, he was included in the International Best Dressed Hall of Fame List.

In a further emotional tribute, The Rolling Stones official website has removed all of its content. The site now features a black screen with a photo of Watts prominently centre in celebration of his influence, passion and enduring legacy.

Two rare handwritten setlists from British music legends Beatles are to be auctioned, the auction will take place on 28th October 2021.

The lot comprises of two setlists, the first setlist dates to the early stages of the band’s career from a concert during their early performing years. During this infantile stage of the group’s progression the band’s name was The Silver Beetles and the band’s line-up was also different, Sir Paul McCartney was not the singer and bassist within the line-up but was the drummer. The first setlist is from 1960 and is written by McCartney, the setlist is for a performance at Liscard’s Grosvenor Ballroom located in the town of Wallasey within the English county Merseyside. The setlist includes various covers played at the gig including the Elvis song ‘Stuck On You‘, as well as Beatles original ‘One For 909‘.

The year of the setlist is a mere three years before the initial formation of what would become the multi-hitmakers Beatles. The second setlist is dated from 1963 and is also from the early years of the band’s career. A year before the writing of the setlist Sir Ringo Starr joined the group as their drummer, completing the group and cementing the band line-up with which they rose to fame. The setlist is from a gig held on 17th April 1963 at the Majestic Ballroom located in Luton and was written on the back of a publicity postcard belonging to record label Parlophone. Signed by the four band-members, included in the setlist is ‘Love Me Do‘ and cover of Little Richard hit ‘Long Tall Sally‘.

Within this same year of 1963, the group released two studio albums, the first being their debut album ‘Please Please Me’. The album was produced by their long-term collaborator, producer George Martin, who is often referred to as the fifth Beatle due to his heavy involvement within the band’s sound and career. Eight months after the release of the Beatles’ debut studio album the second album of the year ‘With the Beatles’ was released on 22nd November 1963, the album featured George Harrison’s first solo composition, ‘Don’t Bother Me’.

The importance of the setlists’ worth is clearly due to the rarity in which each holds, there are only eight setlists by the Beatles which currently exist. Both setlists are predicted to sell for between $150,000 and $250,000, the auction is being held by international auction house Bonhams. Howard Kramer, the Senior Specialist responsible for the music lots within the auction houses’ Popular Culture department has spoken to Rolling Stone concerning the first setlist. “At this point, the Beatles were about to become a band in the truest sense, Pete Best had yet to join the band and the first Hamburg engagement was about two months out. Pretty soon, there was no looking back.”

Kramer has also spoken to Rolling Stone concerning the second setlist, “This setlist shows them as a working band that understands their role as entertainers, This is just one set of two played that night but we can see that they are still balancing their own developing work with songs from other artists and diverse sources.” The Senior Specialist also provided the following comment on the band’s career and the scope in which the setlists hold within their value. “Setlists generally have a short life, Once the gig is over, they’ve served their purpose. Collecting scraps of paper from pop bands wasn’t a thing yet in 1960 and 1963. That scarcity is what makes these setlists so interesting. “The Beatles’ career was relatively brief and there’s very few tangible, physical items directly used by the band that become available to the public, The Beatles are still the most collectible

A rare Beatles demo has gone to auction today, the demo features recordings made at the famous Abbey Road studios during the 1960s.

The collection is said to have been left by members, John Lennon, Sir Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Sir Ringo Starr at Abbey Road Studios during the recording of their first album ‘Please Please Me’. The group’s debut studio album was released through EMI’s partner label Parlophone records on 22nd March 1963 and was produced by the group’s long-time producer George Martin, often known as the fifth Beatle.

The lot’s listing states the following concerning the tape’s origins: “Gifted to the vendor, a bass player in a rock band that has sold over 20 million albums. Presented in 1971 while recording their first LP at Abbey Road Studios by a sound technician, the demo itself recorded in the 1960s.”

The lot contains a collection of unreleased and unheard tracks including early recordings of ‘I Me Mine’ with Harrison’s vocals, the Lewis Carroll inspired ‘I Am The Walrus’, featuring Lennon’s vocals and ‘The Fool On The Hill’, featuring McCartney on the piano. All three tracks were later recorded as finished products and released, ‘I Am The Walrus’ and ‘The Fool On The Hill’ were released in 1967, ‘I Me Mine’ was released in April 1970 and was the group’s final new song they worked on as a band before their breakup. The anonymous seller has also stated in a note that the collection features a recording of ‘The Fool On the Hill’ with an alternate ending.

The studio formerly known as EMI Recording Studio was opened in 1931 by the famed conductor Sir Edward Elgar. The studio saw the making of many famous and paramount releases, including ‘The Piper at the Gates of Dawn’ by Pink Floyd and more recently the 2011 album ‘Ceremonials’ by Florence and the Machine. The studio is also famous for the home of many Beatles’ albums including the 1969 release ‘Abbey Road’, famed for the cover art which shows the band outside of the studio. The album’s title was named after the studio’s street, after the album’s release the studio was officially renamed Abbey Road Studios in celebration of the record. In 2010 the studio was protected from property developers by being granted English Heritage Grade ii listed status. The studio’s legacy was further developed in 2015 when the Abbey Road Institute was founded, formed as an educational programme for production and engineering within the field of recorded music.

The unnamed seller’s note concerning the lot states the physical history of the tape and describes the content. “The cassette was transferred to a newer style cassette, as the old style cassettes tended to break and lose Chromium Dioxide causing dropouts. Even though there are some minor drop outs, please enjoy the tongue in cheek ending to ‘Fool on the Hill’ and the almost final version of ‘I am the Walrus.”

The collection has been put on auction today through the auction house, Sworders Auctioneers. A price of £500- £700 has been given as the estimated selling price of the collection. The auction house was founded in 1782 and has experience within specialist objects, including European and British paintings and furniture.

In other news, Starr has spoken on the secret to the band’s success and how other bands would not be able to reach their iconic status. The drummer has equated their influence and success to a telepathic bond which greatly benefited the band while performing live. “When we were playing together as a band, we were the best band in the land. I don’t care what anyone says. We knew each other and it was like psychic. I would be playing drums with my eyes closed and the headphones on and would know John was going to go somewhere. I’d drum in that and hold it together while they went mad and then bring it back.”

The tape is not just an incredible item of Beatles memorabilia but also marks an important point in musical history. The demo provides an intimate snapshot into the incredible influence in which Abbey Road Studios held within music and culture.
