The London based noise-rock band Green Star have shared a hypnotic and ethereal new music video on 6 May for their single ‘Spider’s Without Eyes’. The song features as the final track on their latest EP release ‘Bleeding Swirls’, released on 3 May.

From the underground warehouse scene, Green Star have emerged to share their haunting artistry in the rock scene. With strong experimental and shoegaze influence, their latest music video reflects the sombre artistry of the band. Their single comes with shots of vocalist Lilah Bobak running through foggy English fields in a gloomy aesthetic reminiscent of several pieces of popular British media including British TV show Skins.

The London gloom aesthetic is of great importance to the band’s image and sound, with their life in England inspiring the production of ‘Bleeding Swirls’.

The band was formed in 2024 by Spanish musicians Pedro Soler and Albert De Torre who initially played together in the ambient-noise band Soft Nukes. The two then met Bobak on the website joinmyband.com and they began incorporating an experimentalism to their sound. Since then they have taken the scene by storm, amassing over 3,000 listeners on Spotify and a dedicated fanbase on social media with their debut single ‘Blades Of Steel’ earlier this year.

In an interview with The Rolling Stones, the band share their lyrical influence, stating that “Everything seems like it’s collapsing, but at the same time, there’s, some certain light always there.” Their sound reflects this with a rough noise edge and tender ambience which has been prevalent since ‘Blades Of Steel’.

The band shared their creative thoughts and inspirations for ‘Bleeding Swirls’ in an interview with Dork magazine. When explaining their relationship with noise rock, they share “It embodies disruption, intuition, and a certain rawness that helps us communicate—it’s a visceral language.” Lyrically their music challenges an existentialism, a theme they describe as “introspection and searching”. With the band originating in the warehouse scene, they share how their sound ties in with their lives, explaining “the city’s often gloomy nature heavily influences how we write and envision the world in which our music exists.”

Their music videos also exist in this space, with Bobak’s background in dance and Soler’s in filmmaking, this creative magnetism runs through their projects. Their artistry can further be seen in the music video for their single ‘Four-O-Five’.

Today (7 May) they will be hosting a release show with So Young Records at The Social, London as part of their UK tour which commenced on 4 May in Leeds. Tickets are available here.

The tour will include stops in Dublin, Manchester, London, and Glasgow, marking a highly anticipated return to the stage for the influential band. Fans of the Dublin-formed quartet have been eagerly awaiting new live performances, with their last UK headline tour taking place in 2013. The announcement follows subtle hints from frontman Kevin Shields about the possibility of new music in the near future, though no official release has been confirmed.

Known for their groundbreaking sound and layered, immersive production, My Bloody Valentine reshaped the alternative rock landscape with their 1991 album ‘Loveless‘, widely regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time. It peaked at #7 on the UK Album Chart. Their signature blend of distorted guitars, ethereal vocals, and intricate production techniques made them pioneers of the shoegaze genre, inspiring countless artists in the decades since.

While My Bloody Valentine is more known for their critically acclaimed albums than chart-topping singles, ‘Soon’ from ‘Loveless‘ remains one of their most iconic tracks. The song, featuring swirling guitar loops and a hypnotic dance beat, was revolutionary for its time, blending elements of shoegaze and electronic music in a way that was years ahead of its era.

Tickets for the tour go on sale April 4, and given the band’s cult status, they are expected to sell out quickly. There is also an opportunity to sign up to the band’s newsletter for pre-sale options before March 31.

Scottish shoegaze band The Jesus And Mary Chain have released another single ahead of their upcoming album drop later this year. “Chemical Animal” will feature on the band’s eighth studio album to date, Glasgow Eyes, which is set to be released on March 8 via Fuzz Club.

This LP, announced back on November 29 with the release of the record’s lead single “Jamcod”, will be the band’s latest release since 2017 and will be followed swiftly by a UK and European tour, commencing with two dates at the Albert Hall in Manchester on March 22 and 23 respectively, and ending at Den Atelier in Luxembourg on April 25.

Listen to “Chemical Animal” below:

“People should expect a Jesus and Mary Chain record, and that’s certainly what Glasgow Eyes is,” Jim Reid said in a statement. “Our creative approach is remarkably the same as it was in 1984, just hit the studio and see what happens. We went in with a bunch of songs and let it take its course. There are no rules, you just do whatever it takes. And there’s a telepathy there—we are those weird not-quite twins that finish each other’s sentences.”

The Jesus And Mary Chain, founded in 1983 in East Kilbride by brothers Jim and William Reid, who are responsible for the majority of the songwriting, are the source of inspiration behind the band’s sound, and remain the group’s only ever-present members. The pair enlisted Douglas Hart on bass and Murray Dalglish on drums, who was soon replaced by Primal Scream’s Bobbie Gillespie, and released their debut single “Upside Down” in 1984, which was soon followed by their critically acclaimed debut album Psychocandy the following year, an LP that firmly established the group’s popularity in the up-and-coming UK shoegaze scene and brought with it the much-loved fan favourite “Just Like Honey“.

Watch the music video for “Just Like Honey” below:

Their second album, Darklands, proved to be the band’s most successful, reaching number five on the UK Albums Chart. Four more albums followed before The Jesus And Mary Chain disbanded in 1999, with both brothers starting different, yet ultimately unsuccessful, music projects. The band then reunited in 2007 and released their first material in ten years with the single “All Things Must Pass,” before releasing their seventh studio album, Damage And Joy, in 2017.

The current line-up consists of the Reid brothers, of course, along with bassist Mark Crozer, guitarist Scott Von Ryper and drummer Justin Welch.

Outbreak Festival has officially unveiled the initial lineup of artists set to perform at its upcoming 13th edition. Scheduled to unfold in Manchester from June 28 to 30, 2024, the festival is set to retrace its steps to its original Manchester venue, the Bowlers Exhibition Centre, after its 2023 stint at Depot Mayfield. The announcement comes via an Instagram post from December 15, setting the stage for what promises to be a prominent fixture in the hardcore and counterculture scene.

Rock band Basement are the sole headliner announced so far, marking their third appearance at the festival after performing both in 2015 and 2022. The excitement is only set to escalate as the anticipation builds for the June weekender, with three additional headliners yet to be announced.

The Friday lineup boasts a diverse array of musical talents, featuring JPEGMAFIA, Flatbush Zombies, The Garden, Redveil, MAVI, and King Isis.

The excitement continues with a multigenre array of performances on Saturday and Sunday, showcasing talents like Soccer Mommy, Show Me The Body, Poison The Well, Angel Du$t, Mannequin Pussy, Ceremony, Touché Amoré, Movements, Incendiary, Mindforce, and more.

Other performers include Balance and Composure, Bodyweb, Chat Pile, Demonstration Of Power, Fiddlehead, Higher Power, Hot Mulligan, Teenage Wrist, The World Is A Beautiful Place And I Am No Longer Afraid To Die, amongst others.

Reflecting on the success of the 2023 edition, headlined by US hip-hop acts Denzel Curry and Death Grips, along with Converge and Bane, Outbreak Festival remains committed to its diverse lineup and its roots in hardcore and alternative music. Hailed as “the heart and soul of hardcore” in Huck magazine, it is a staple in the calendar for enthusiasts in the hardcore and counterculture scenes.

Tickets for the highly anticipated 2024 edition are already on sale here beckoning fans to secure their spot for what promises to be an unmissable experience. Fans can expect more announcements, including the other three headliners, in the coming months. Stay tuned for updates.

London alternative rock trio Bar Italia have announced their second full-length album of 2023. The Twits will be released on November 3rd via Matador Records and swiftly follows the release of the band’s debut album, Tracey Denim, in May earlier this year.

With the announcement comes the release of a new single from the forthcoming album, “My Little Tony“, accompanied by a music video.

Watch the music video for “My Little Tony” below:

The new upcoming album marks a period of impressive proficiency for the band, having released their debut full-length studio LP a few months ago in May. Tracey Denim was hugely anticipated and lived up to expectations by all accounts, with the band producing an album that mixed the lofi, shoegaze roots of the group with a more polished, indie post-punk feel, with the tracks “Nurse!” and “Punkt” in particular containing a driven and more focused post-punk approach.

“My Little Tony” appears to suggest that the new album will not shy away from shoegaze completely, being a track that immediately kicks into life with a loud, unceasing and sprawling guitar sound that is permeated throughout with crisp and distinct drum beats.

One thing that has not changed from their debut LP, indeed, and what makes Bar Italia such a unique and uncompromising musical group, is the curious fact that all three members of the band, Nina Cristante, Sam Fenton and Jezmi Tarik Fehmi, retain their vocal roles as well as their instrument playing roles. The fact that all three sing at various points adds a level of sophistication and depth to their recordings that is unparalleled in contemporary indie and alternative rock.

The London based trio, named after the popular Soho bar/cafe Bar Italia, had previously worked with producer Dean Blunt, producing two EPs under Blunt’s label World Music (Quarrel in 2020 and Bedhead in 2022). They signed with Matador Records in March of this year and are set to release impressive two albums in 2023. The Twits was recorded in eight weeks in a makeshift home studio in Mallorca and was mixed by producer Marta Salogni.

The releasing of The Twits will also be supported by a European tour. See below for tour dates:

British shoegaze legends Slowdive have announced a UK/EU tour off the back of their new album ‘everything is alive’ which was released last Friday (September 1). Tickets can be purchased here.

The academy sized tour starts at the Parsdiso in Amsterdam on January 24th and commences in Manchester on February 27th. The band announced the tour alongside releasing new single ‘alife’.
‘everything is alive’ marks the band’s second album since reunifying in 2014 and releasing their self-titled album in 2017.

The new album ‘everything is alive’ deals with emotionally heavy themes as band members Rachel Goswell and Neil Halstead both dealt with the death of a parent before beginning to record the album. Halstead has however gone on to say: “I thought it was going to be quite a dark record but once we got together as a band, I think some of that darkness lifted and some of the tunes became a bit lighter,”

The band has gained a big cult-following since disbanding in 1995, thanks to the influence of albums like ‘Souvlaki’ and ‘Just for a Day’. The cult-favourite band also played Glastonbury for the first time ever earlier this year.

We are also very pleased to announce our UK and European tour in 2024. For tickets and further information visit -> https://t.co/IRPFlDHjnH pic.twitter.com/UV1RBM6FW2 — Slowdive (@slowdiveband) August 30, 2023

The first part of the tour consists of dates mostly in Northern Europe in cities like Paris, Stockholm and Copenhagen whilst rounding out the latter half of the tour across academy venues in the UK.

British shoegaze band Bdrmm have started a crowdfunder to fund their upcoming autumn tour after a non-payment following a festival appearance has left them out of pocket. The band claim to be owed an outstanding payment of £6,500, without which they will struggle to continue with their autumn European tour, which is scheduled to kick off in Bruges, Belgium on 17 October and end on 5 November in Nijmegen, Netherlands.

The Hull based band last Friday 1 September issued a statement via Twitter (X) concerning their unfortunate circumstances. It read, “Hello! As a band we’re going through some financial hardship due to non-payment by promoters for a performance outside of the country – a show which heavily cost us to get to. This, paired with inflating tour costs, has left us unable to fund our October/November tour. As an independent band, touring is vital to our survival and we rely on promoters to do the decent thing and actually pay us. This is something that hasn’t happened recently regarding a show that promised a substantial fee and has left us seriously out of pocket.”

It continued, “Therefore, we’ve set up a crowdfund to help us recoup the money we have lost due to non-payment. Anything you can give to help us get this show on the road would be greatly appreciated. As well as this, to raise funds we’ve made all our tour stock of vinyl and tees available for purchase at a discounted price this Bandcamp Friday. Every purchase is greatly appreciated and all the money will go towards helping us eat and sleep comfortably on the road.”

After an extremely positive and uplifting public response, Bdrmm lead vocalist and guitarist Ryan Smith posted a video onto Twitter (X) outlining his appreciation to all those who donated to the crowdfunder appeal and those who purchased band merch in the form of vinyl copies of albums and t-shirts.

Watch the heartwarming video below:

thank you all so so much. people are fucking incredible. x pic.twitter.com/3yTCAQCmJZ

The crowdfunder, appropriately named ‘The “bdrmm got effed over” fund’, has already amassed £4,296 by way of donations, 66% of its target of £6,500. You can contribute by clicking here.

Bdrmm released their second and latest album, I Don’t Know, via Rock Action Records this June, and the band were hoping to showcase this new material on their upcoming tour.

American singer-songwriter Sophia Allison, better known as Soccer Mommy, has shared her take on the iconic 2002 Sheryl Crow song “Soak Up The Sun”. Allison, who is currently on tour in support of her critically acclaimed album Sometimes, Forever, recorded the cover in recognition of an artist she deems a major influence. In an interview with The New York Times, the singer voiced her admiration for Crow:

“She has so many songs that are these massive hits that, at least for someone my age, you can’t have grown up and not heard those songs. She has a knack for saying something hard, but making it feel like she’s ready to acknowledge it and be cool with this hard acceptance.”

Listen to Soccer Mommy’s cover of “Soak Up The Sun” below:

Allison, however, is also a brilliant songwriter in her own right. The 26-year-old, who was introduced to the guitar at age six, began posting songs as Soccer Mommy in 2015, before landing a recording contract with Fat Possum. In 2017, she dropped out of college to pursue a full-time music career and has gone on to release three albums, the most recent of which was named one of the best albums of 2023 by the likes of The New York Times, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Billboard, Stereogum, and more.

The Line Of Best Fit described Sometimes, Forever as “an astounding artistic accomplishment that deserves to propel Allison to the very highest ranks of the indie world”, while The New Yorker pronounced the record Soccer Mommy’s “gnarliest and most resplendent, fashioning poppy melodies, disarming lyrics, and twisted sounds into dismayed songs of young adulthood.”

Listen to lead single “Shotgun” below:

The Daniel Lopatin-produced album sees Allison explore new sonic landscapes, including shoegaze and industrial noise, cementing her status as one of the most gifted songwriters making rock music right now. Once again, the singer taps into the turn-of-the-millenium sensibilities and confessional lyricism she’s known for, this time inspired by the idea that neither sorrow nor happiness is eternal. Sometimes, Forever is a glimpse into the mind of an artist who synthesizes everything — retro sounds, personal tumult, the relatable disorder of modern life — into original music that feels built to last a long time.

In 2022, following the release of the album, Allison completed a largely sold-out international headline tour and hosted Roblox’s most successful Listening Party to date with 10.8 million unique visitors.

English singer-songwriter Nabihah Iqbal has announced a UK tour supporting the release of her latest album, Dreamer.

The LP, Iqbal’s second to date, was released on April 28th via Ninja Tune and has already attained a good deal of attention and affection in equal measure, with The Quietus praising the record’s “tripped-out sunburst euphoria“.

The five-date tour comes at the end of September, with the first gig in Glasgow at King Tut’s on the 22nd and the final show at EartH in London on the 30th.

London-based Iqbal’s music career began as an aside to her career as a legal professional; in 2013, whilst working as a human rights lawyer, she started releasing material under the alias Throwing Shade, with an initial focus on experimental electronic music. With the release, however, of her debut album, Weighing of the Heart, in 2017, came both a switch in identity and in genre; she had reverted to using her birth name for her musical identity, and had swayed gently towards a more indie rock sound.

Dreamer, as fans who will be in attendance at the series of shows will soon find out, offers a delve into both sets of genres that Iqbal has claimed for herself. The dance floor oriented electronic music that made Throwing Shades known in the first place presents itself again in the tracks “Sunflower“, “Gentle Heart” and “Sky River” in the form of groovy tech-house, while “The World Couldn’t See Us” brings with it an 80s new wave, The Cure-esque vibe, with its fast-paced drums and guitars complimenting each other exquisitely.

Watch the music video for “Sunflower” below:

The title track, “Dreamer“, another fast-paced and high-energy number, strewn together beautifully in a shoegaze fashion and adorned with Iqbal’s almost angelic vocals, certainly fits the title as it draws the listener in and envelopes them with its ethereal nature.

The London based band, consisting of Nina Cristante, Jezmi Tarik Fehmi and Sam Fenton, have hitherto had their promising beginnings in the UK music scene shrouded in obscurity, employing a minimal social media presence and a general sense of not wanting to be recognised.

What we do know about the intriguing trio is this: they get their name from popular Soho bar/cafe Bar Italia (a spot which also inspired the same name for a Pulp track back in 1995), and they are connected to Dean Blunt, musician and record producer, and have previously released two EPs under Blunt’s label World Music (Quarrel in 2020 and Bedhead in 2022). These initial recordings are hugely experimental in nature, incorporating indie rock with shoegaze in a highly lo-fi approach.

This March saw them being signed to Matador Records, and with their first feature length album brings the hope of a knowability that fans of the group have been craving. The two releases from the LP thus far, “Nurse!” and “punkt”, seem to suggest a drift away from the band’s lo-fi, shoegaze roots; employed in both tracks instead is a hypnotic bassline that is accompanied by a driving and constant effort by both rhythm and lead guitars, leading to a sort of indie post-punk feel. In “Nurse!”, however, a noise-rock element is retained, featuring heavy, distorted guitar sounds with each third verse.

Interestingly enough both tracks also feature each member of the band having vocals. “Nurse!” sees each member have two verses each, taking a verse at a time in order and then repeating, all the while having different instrumentation dictating a different mood with each verse, while “punkt” contains a single verse each from each band member, starting with Fenton and finishing with Cristante.

It is distinctly clear to see, then, why there is such an air of excitement around this group. There is a definite sense of the band coming into their own and arriving at their creative peak with this forthcoming release, and I for one cannot wait to taste it.
