Saturday 24 October saw the final third drop of exciting vinyl releases mark the end of this year’s Record Store Day events series in the UK. In a unique and somewhat unusual organisation, the 2020 record celebration ran over three separate days spread between August and October in response to the ongoing global pandemic and government restrictions that would have made the traditional single day launch impossible to plan. The event organisers have adapted to the situation in spectacular fashion and managed to host a well planned, smooth and safe run of events that concluded yesterday.

Following the highly anticipated re-scheduled first drop on 29 August and its popular follow-up on 26 September, the initial numbers showed staggering increase in vinyl sales and a very positive reception from the community. We are yet to get the final results from all three events, but so far everything points to a very succesful and beneficial Record Store Days this year, in a particularly difficul time for independent shop owners and record companies. The event organisers expressed their gratitude to everyone who took the time to visit their local shop or get involved online, highlighting the impact it had to the struggling industry and stating that the support “has meant the world to record shops across the UK“.

Yesterday’s final event saw the same measures in place to ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone involved. Visitors to all participating stores were asked to wait in socially distanced queues and book shopping slots in advance to avoid overcrowding, and also had all remaining vinyl and deal available online after 6pm. Subject to availability and terms and conditions, some of the records that have not sold out yet can still be found in your local store or online so it is worth checking RSD’s Store Locator for the remaining titles.

One of the highlights of the October drop was Keith Richard’s rare 7” Hate It When You Leave which was promoted with exclusive new video that premiered last week. Moreover, vinyl lovers queued from the early morning hours to get their hands on special limited offers such as the remastered edition of Prince’s iconic Sign O’ The Times, Frank Zappa’s 2020 collectors’ edition of You Can’t Do That On Stage Anymore, clear vinyl of Lewis Capaldi’s triple platinum Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent, and the unique picture disk version of the critically acclaimed debut album Deep Down Happy by Sports Team. The list of exciting titles went on with the release of exclusive LPs and 7” by Alice Cooper, Eminem, Johnny Cash, Asking Alexandria, Lou Reed, and others.

Following the success of the first two events, and the hype leading to yesterday’s October drop, the event organisers have announced a special Black Friday release for 27 November. With yet another collection of exclusive titles, the event proposes a different approach to the heavily commercialised Black Friday event by turning the idea “on its head by offering music fans a selection of unique records to celebrate record shops and the art of vinyl“. Full list of the upcoming releases can be found online with some very interesting editions by Beastie Boys, Chris Cornell, Corey Taylor, The Weeknd, Dio, George Harrison, Nick Cave, Motorhead, U2 and many more.

After the hugely successful first installment on this year’s Record Store Day on 29 August, the second event is happening today across all participating stores in the UK. Normally held annually during one day in April, a decision has been made to split the 2020 Record Stay Day in three separate occasions to meet government guidelines and huge demand. The next and final date is set for 24th October 2020.

The second RSD20 drop today is going ahead as planned with similar social distancing measures, pre-booked browsing slots and queueing systems to ensure the safety and wellbeing of record store workers and music fans. After 6pm, some limited edition vinyl and exclusive deals will be available online.

Thousands of record lovers and collectors celebrated the August drop that lifted the spirits of all stores’ owners and staff who have been hit particularly hard by the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions. The impact on the first event has been immense, with a staggering 3% increase of vinyl sales against last year, and more than 2.7 million units already sold. The online sales have also seen a massive uplift with business owners like Joe Blanchard from Sheffield’s Bear Tree Records commenting on the “full blown explosion” of the first day and “feeling optimistinc about the months ahead“.

Along with the fantastic physical sales and huge online traffic, the Record Store Day in August was praised nationwide for its organisation and logistics. Following months of lockdown, changing rules and uncertainty, music fans were pleasantly surprised and rewarded with a relaxed day dedicated solely to their shared love of music with sufficient health and safety measures in place to ensure their comfort and wellbeing. The RSD organisers and all participating shops are determined to repeat the success of the previous drop while adhering to all current guidelines.

Join in celebrating this year’s Record Store Day that is finally taking place after being postponed multiple times due to lockdown restriction. Traditionally held at the beginning of April each year, it was initially rescheduled for June and later moved to three separate days as a way to aid social distancing. The first event takes place today, with two more to follow on 26th September and 24th October this year.

Unlike previous years where vinyl collectors all gathered at their favourite local record stores across the UK to celebrate a shared passion for music and vinyl, organisers had to make changes to adapt to the current government guidelines. In order to avoid large gatherings of people, all participating stores offer specific slots for pre-booking and provide socially distanced queues for those who just wanted to drop by. Additionaly, for the first time limited edition LPs and singles will be made available to purchase after 6pm on each of the three days.

In recent years the Record Store Day has become one of the main annual events for music lovers, with fans hunting for exclusive and limited re-issues and new releases by their favourite artists, and bands joining in for exclusive gigs and parties at participating stores and supporting venues. With the long lockdown of 2020 and most live summer events being cancelled, the importance of the day is now greater than ever, in solidarity with record shop owners, musicians and professionals from the live music all struggling in these difficult times.

London-based indie band The Big Moon were selected as this year’s Record Store Day official ambassadors. All members Juliette Jackson, Soph Nathan, Celia Archer and Fern Forn got together in March to record three live tracks at London’s Metropolis Studios, joined by live audience. The recording process reflected the original methods of capturing live music for publishing and is released as exclusive EP available to purchase today.

Organisation UK Music joined in support of the Record Store Day with CEO Tom Kiehl stating that “now, more than ever, it’s vitally important to support music retailers“. Praising the initiative taking place despite all restrictions, he went on to celebrate all record shops and independant music retailers that managed to find a safe way to operate in 2020. Use the official website’s store locator to check the full list of the participating stores or find the closest one to your location.

Among the highlights of today’s event are new releases from veterans The Cure, Welsh rockers Manic Street Preachers, French artist Christine and the Queens, and Biffy Clyro’s 7″ Moderns featuring covers of David Bowie and Frigtened Rabbit. The list for RSD20’s August drop also include exciting new releases from Bastille, Black Sabbath, Elton John, Fatboy Slim, Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes, New Order, Opeth, U2, and many more. Additional listings for all releases expected for the September and October drops can be found on the Record Store Day UK’s official website.
