On Friday (April 18), the band shared a post including two images of an iPod sitting in a recording studio. Written on the back of the iPod was the cryptic message ‘CURE MOALW’, with the screen of the iPod showing a selection of tracks by the band.

A 14 second video of mysterious music was also included in the post with the same letters, ‘MOALW’, appearing. The post was captioned ‘IV-XXI-MMXXV’ which most likely references the date of today (April 21 2025).

Fans are obviously now rife with speculation as they await the nature of the announcement, expecting either a brand new record, tour or remix album.

The relevance of the ‘MOALW’ abbreviation has created the most conversation, as it clearly heavily links to their 2024 album, ‘Songs Of A Lost World’. Many fans have taken to X to suggest the five-lettered teaser could stand for “Mixes of a Lost World” or maybe even “Movie of a Lost World” which would indicate an upcoming film release for the “Just Like Heaven” band.

It is also worth noting that the day of the teased announcement coincides with frontman Robert Smith’s 66th birthday. One X user pointed this out and offered their view on the tease, saying: “Is RS teasing some sort of big announcement on his birthday? The bagatelle image on the lower right is giving me Twilight Zone vibes.

“It reminds me of the classic electronic toy ‘Lite Brite’. I see ‘Moon spelled out somewhere on the multi-coloured screen with random letters. It’s a little early, but are ‘easter eggs’ being hidden in some of these images?”

The rumours of a remix album seem the strongest, as legendary producer Four Tet recently debuted a remix of their single ‘Alone‘ at a recent show at EartH in London. Check out what mxdwn.co.uk had to say about it here.

Although everything is pointing towards a remix album of ‘Songs Of A Lost World’, it wouldn’t be a total surprise if a brand new Cure album hit the shelves relatively soon.

Late last year, Smith stated that he is “already finishing” the band’s next album, teasing a release as soon as summer 2025.

Speaking on X-Posure with John Kennedy on Radio X, Smith revealed: “In 2019 we recorded 24 songs for what was going to be a double album, and those eight have come out.

“I’m finishing the next one [album]. I just can’t decide on the running order. It’s always which ones fit best together… There’s an awful lot of stuff that’s unreleased and I never thought I’d bother kind of revisiting it. But actually with the way this album has been received, I think maybe it’s the right time for me just to go back over stuff and get it out there.”

No matter what this announcement is, fans of the “Boys Don’t Cry” band will be looking forward to it. Whether an album, a tour or a film, it is sure to bring excitement to the music world.

The Cure landed their first UK Number One album in 32 years with 2024’s ‘Songs Of A Lost World’ as it received critical acclaim including a five-star NME review and a sixth placed finish in their Albums of 2024 list.

In other news relating to The Cure, it was announced last month that Robert Smith would be a curator for the 2026 edition of the Teenage Cancer Trust concert series at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

The announcement marks the 65-year old frontman as the successor of series founder and The Who legend Roger Daltrey. Last year, Daltrey announced that he would be stepping down as curator of the Teenage Cancer Trust concert series after 24 years. However, he will continue to serve as the charity’s patron.

Confirmed acts include The Who, The Corrs, James Arthur, Frank Carter, Sex Pistols’ Paul Cook, Steve Jones, and Glen Matlock, as well as a comedy night hosted by Micky Flanagan. Additionally, it’s been announced that the renowned Erased Tapes label will take over March 29, presenting performances from Penguin Cafe, Daniel Brandt, Douglas Dare, and Hatis Noit. ‘Alone’ comes from The Cure’s 14th studio album ‘Songs Of A Lost World’, released late last year. It saw the band earn their first UK Number One album in 32 years, ending a 16 year creative drought. The single has since earned critical acclaim, even landing itself on NME’s Best Songs of 2024.

In the episode that paid particular attention to the pop queens who were at the forefront of music in 2024; Sabrina Carpenter, Charli xcx, and Chappell Roan, Smith revealed an impressive knowledge to the cultural prominence of these woman within the music industry.

Smith prefaced the conversation with the awareness that it would be “unfair and disingenuous” to claim he had “bought into Brat Summer or Chappell Roan” because it’s not aimed at him. He continued to emphasise that he had been aware of Roan’s work “for a long, long time”, recognising the nature of her almost ‘overnight’ success with her debut album, ‘The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess’, despite Roan being present in the industry for many years.

The podcast’s presenter, Annie Mac went on to ask The Cure frontman if he was aware of a recent incident where Roan called out the behaviour of her fans by posting two videos on TikTok, and how Roan calling out this behaviour marked a wider cultural shift regarding para-social relationships between celebrities and their fans.

Roan declared online back in August: “I don’t want whatever the f*** you think you’re supposed to be entitled to whenever you see a celebrity. I don’t give a f*** if you think its selfish of me to say no for a photo or for your time or for a hug. That’s not normal. That’s weird. It’s weird how people think that you know a person just because you see them online and you listen to the art they make. That’s f***ing weird! I’m allowed to say no to creepy behaviour, ok?”

Smith empathised with Roan: “it’s a tricky one because it’s a complicated subject. I think what you’re doing as an artist, you want people to feel like they’re engaging with you, but it is a modern world phenomenon that there this a sense of entitlement that didn’t used to be there amongst fans.”

As an individual with over four decades worth of experience in the industry, Smith compared Roan’s experience to his own encounters with fans: “When we started out, it was kind of enough, we did what we did, and people didn’t expect more”.

He continued: “whereas now it seems almost like that is part of the deal and as The Cure became more popular, we obviously have experienced quite a lot of obsessive behaviour down the years”.

The ‘Alone’ singer expressed his support to Roan’s comments, recognising the “very strange culture” that encompasses modern fan culture where “obsessive behaviour” is somewhat normalised despite being “quite threatening” to artists.

Smith recognises the difference in The Cure’s and Roan’s emergence to fame, with the latter being more rapid, has exacerbated the difficulties in adjusting to the spotlight, when artists are catapulted into fame almost overnight.

As the trio’s conversation began to quickly change topic, Sidetracked saw Smith tease the unreleased second part of ‘Songs of a Lost World’ and divulge in his listening habits which surrounded owning many iPods with their own distinct genres to suit his moods and consciously avoiding streaming services, and being “bewildered” at the public response to The Cure’s latest release.

The Cure are renowned for their emotionally provoking lyricism and dark tonal melodies which continually resonate with audiences. Smith recently spoke to Radio X during a track by track analysis of The Cure’s latest album, where the frontman went on to confess that he’s written a “really catchy pop song”.

Pop songs are not a typical feature in The Cure’s discography, as Smith prefers an “emotional response” from his music, which is telling given the ever-present themes of loss, isolation and angst within ‘Songs of a Lost World’.

The ‘And Nothing Is Forever’ singer stated: “I always just want an emotional response from what I write… Unless I think, ‘This is a catchy idea’, but those days have kind of gone a little bit’”.

The frontman continued: “Although I have written a really catchy pop song! I’m struggling to figure out how I’m gonna release it. Having been up in town all day, the amount of times I’ve heard [Wham!’s] Last Christmas. I think I just need to stick some Christmas words on it and get it out there!”

It wouldn’t be surprising Smith taking inspiration from Wham!’s ‘Last Christmas’ given its continued success 40 years on. After all, it’s not unlikely for melancholia to meet festivities, given George Michael wrote the most heart-wrenching lyrics and paired it melodically with sleigh bells to produce one of the most memorable festive tracks of all time. In the same way, Smith could utilise his emotionally vulnerable lyricism sprinkled with Christmas vocabulary and instrumentation to make the next big festive hit.

Although the conversation did not go any further into the specifics of this potential festive track, The Cure are in the momentum of releasing more music, after their 16-year hiatus from releasing albums prior to ‘Songs of a Lost World’. Smith unveiled “there’s 32 unreleased songs at the moment sitting in my house… There are two eight track albums if we wanted”.

Their next album which the ‘Alone’ singer anticipates will have 10 songs, be released next summer and exist as the “companion piece” to ‘Songs of a Lost World’, while the other tracks are “completely random stuff”.

It’s clear The Cure are planning on making a substantial comeback not only with a follow up album to ‘Songs of a Lost World’ on the way but an exciting, experimental festive track that could be gifted to us in time for next year’s festivities.

The album, titled ‘Songs of a Live World Troxy London MMXXIV’, will be released on vinyl, CD, and cassette on 13 December by Fiction/Polydor. It can be purchased here.

They went on to confirm that all band royalties from the live release will be donated to War Child – a charity who specialise in aiding and protecting children caught in conflict and war zones – The Cure has previously worked with War Child UK through the Record Store Day campaign which brings together independent record stores, record labels, and artists once a year in hopes of raising money and awareness for the charity. This year they raised £42k in aid of children in conflict zones.

The recorded performance that has made it to vinyl took place on the album’s release date, 1 November, at London’s Troxy. While 3,000 people attended in person, the event was also streamed live on YouTube, reaching an even wider audience. The stream, which remains available online, has since garnered over 2.2 million views. This level of interest reflects not only the band’s enduring popularity but also their ability to attract a new generation of fans, many of whom were not even born when their debut album was released in 1979.

At the gig, the six-piece lineup – Robert Smith (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboard), Simon Gallup (bass), Jason Cooper (drums), Roger O’Donnell (keyboard), Reeves Gabrels (guitar), and Perry Bamonte (guitar, bass, keyboard) – performed ‘Songs of a Lost World’ for the first time in its entirety, interspersed with old favourites and big hits. A highlight of the evening was the celebration of the 45th anniversary of their second album, ‘Seventeen Seconds.’ However, the live album will include only tracks from ‘Songs of a Lost World.’

The performance has been widely praised, in part due to the strength of the album itself. ‘Songs of a Lost World’ is The Cure’s first album in 16 years and was highly anticipated. Both The Guardian’s Alexis Petridis and Neil McCormick from The Telegraph awarded it five stars, with McCormick describing it as the band’s best work since their debut.

The Troxy performance appears to be their last live show before the accumulative world tour rumoured to be starting in late 2025.

The album secured The Cure their first UK Number One in 32 years, outselling artists such as Sabrina Carpenter, Tyler, The Creator, Ed Sheeran, and Charli XCX. 

Frontman, Robert Smith, expressed his gratitude, saying: “It is enormously uplifting, genuinely heartwarming to experience such a wonderful reaction to the release of the new Cure album. To everyone who has bought it, listened to it, loved it, believed in us over the years – thank you!” 

The album has gone on to top five US Billboard Charts, building even further on the success that the band has found at home.

Fans of The Cure can look forward to 2025, with Smith revealing that another album is virtually finished, and a third expected to follow soon after. 

The gig was announced alongside the British rock band’s resurgence into the industry for their first album in 16 years, Songs of a Lost World, which is set to be released on November 1.

Despite the prominent 1980s band being familiar with selling out arenas, the performance at  Radio 2 for the BBC will feature a very small audience in an intimate setting, where tickets will be allocated via ballot, were registration closes October 9 at 9pm UK time.

During the ballot, fans can apply for a pair of tickets, which if they are chosen from the randomly selected ballot, they will be notified by text message with tickets being emailed over.

The Cure’s performance for Radio 2 In Concert will take place at the BBC Radio Theatre on October 30. The concert will be officially broadcast during Jo Whiley’s show on Radio 2 and BBC Sounds on October 31, between 7 and 9pm. This broadcast will also feature Whiley’s exclusive interview with The Cure frontman Robert Smith.

Both sets from the ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ band will be recorded at the BBC Radio Theatre in London’s Broadcasting House. It is evident the band will perform their greatest and most-loved hits, along with new songs from their unreleased album, Songs of a Lost World.

The Cure’s set for 6 Music will be available on both 6 Music and BBC Sounds. It will feature The Cure’s intimate session, ‘6 Music Session: The Cure Live’ along with an exclusive interview between Huw Stephens and Robert Smith. This interview will be broadcast during Huw Stephens’ show on October 31 (4-7pm).

6 Music have been fundamental to The Cure’s return, having debuted the world exclusive first listen to the first single of Songs of a Lost World, ‘Alone’. The track was played on September 26 during Anne Hobbs’ show.

When speaking to the BBC about the upcoming free gigs, Robert Smith stated: “It’s not often we perform such intimate shows, so we’re really looking forward to this, and to sharing more tracks from the new album for the first time on 6 Music and Radio 2”.

Fans can expect more from The Cure and BBC crossover given, the Radio 2 Breakfast Show hosted by Zoe Ball on November 1 will feature some exclusive tracks recorded from the gig. Along with this, The Cure’s Radio 2 In Concert and 6 Music performances will be available on BBC iPlayer from October 31.

Additionally,  November 2 will see the BBC will air The Cure’s Radio 2 performance alongside a new and exclusive The Cure at the BBC compilation along with That Was Then: This Is Now: The Cure, The Cure at Glastonbury 2019 and Rock Around the Clock: The Cure.

With the The Cure studded lineup set to take over the BBC at the end of the month, the anticipation of fans is high as the band make their musical comeback after 16 years.

The ‘Shows Of A Lost World’ tour also broke the band’s previous attendance best of 402 000, a record set in 1992 during their Wish tour, with an impressive 547 000 tickets being sold for this year’s tour. And all this, incredibly, despite The Cure’s frontman Robert Smith’s campaign to keep concert ticket prices as low as possible.

Taking to Twitter to vent his obvious frustration at ever-increasing ticket prices in general but Ticketmaster in particular, Smith has previously and successfully obtained a discount on his fans’ behalf for their upcoming US and Canada tour, stating on twitter after the fact, “After further conversation, Ticketmaster have agreed with us that many of the fees being charged are unduly high, and us a gesture of goodwill have offered a $10 per ticket refund to all verified fan accounts for lowest ticket price (‘LTP’) transactions”

Smith had more good news, adding, “And a $5 per ticket refund to all verified fan accounts for all other ticket price transactions, for all Cure shows at all venues; if you already bought a ticket you will get an automatic refund; all tickets on sale tomorrow will incur lower fees“.

Smith, who has had previous in letting his feelings known towards “sickening” high fees tacked on to ticket prices, and his beloved band therefore, we can all surely agree, wholeheartedly deserve these unprecedented levels of success. Three dates at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles alone grossed a staggering $4.9 million (£3.7 million) and sold 50 800 tickets, while three shows at New York’s Madison Square Garden amassed a figure of $4.1 million (£3.1 million), selling 44 300 tickets in the process.

Formed in 1978, The Cure, with frontman Robert Smith remaining the band’s only constant member, have become mainstays in the UK alternative rock music scene, having made distinct genres such as, originally, post-punk and later, new-wave, gothic rock and pop rock, their very own. The band garnered a significant cult following following the release of their first four albums (Three Imaginary Boys (1979), Seventeen Seconds (1980), Faith (1981), Pornography (1982)) but did not achieve mainstream success until the late 80’s and early 90’s, with Disintegration (1989) and Wish (1992) cementing their place in UK music history for good.

The auction previously confirmed that all net proceeds will be donated to The BRIT Trust, an esteemed institution which supports charities and establishments involved in the music industry. The trust was founded in 1989 and is partly funded by money raised by the famed BRIT awards and other fundraising events, since its formation the BRIT Trust has raised over £28 million for its many causes. The trust aims to fund educational programmes such as The BRIT School and causes committed to mental wellbeing such as Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy plus many more.

Chair of The BRIT Trust, Tony Wadsworth CBE has given the following statement, “Once again we see people’s love of vinyl combine with the power of music to create something of real worth that will benefit the many causes we support across the UK, whether it’s the next generation of creators from The BRIT School, music therapists from Nordoff Robbins or professionals who work with mental health charities like Mind and Music Support. We are grateful to all the artists and labels for generously contributing their test pressings, and to Johnny Chandler and the Universal UMC team for pulling it all together.”

The auction consisted of 175 lots of White Label LP test pressings, with a large amount signed or personalised by artists many lots sold for four figure sums, the available lots were donated by artists as well as both major and independent record labels. White label LPs are considered vastly valuable by collectors and music fans as they are rarely found and are usually kept in archives. Only a handful are usually produced and provide a special insight into the album’s recording process, the LPs are typically manufactured before the album’s full release.

The highest selling lot at this year’s auction was a white label reissue of The Cure’s 1989 release Disintegration, which was signed by frontman Robert Smith and sold for £5,500. The auction included five lots of The Cure LPs, the total amount raised by the group’s records amounted to £12,250. Further high figures were seen from the record sales of The Sex Pistols, two 7” test pressings of the iconic album God Save The Queen sold for £2,550 combined.

Amongst the 175 lots, many well-known albums and celebrated artist’s accumulated impressive bids. A 6 LP set of The Police’s Every Move You Make sold for £1,200 and Disraeli Gears by Cream sold for £700. Lots consisting of The Spice Girls’ music also contributed to the auction’s large donation, a White Label LP of Spice sold for £440 and a copy of The Greatest Hits brought in £340, totalling an incredible £780.

The White Label auction first took place in 2019 and is the brainchild of Johnny Chandler, the A&R director at Universal Music UK has given the following statement, “Once again the response to the auction from artists, managers and labels has been incredible – today’s wonderful result, which will see funds raised go to support the work of The BRIT Trust and the charities it supports right across the UK, is down to them and the ongoing love affair fans have with vinyl. Special thanks to Dan Hampson, Gennaro Castaldo, and their respective teams at Omega Auctions and BPI, Julian Stockton and all at UMC for helping make this possible.”

In a recent appearance on Shaun Keaveny’s podcast The Line-Up, ironically reported by the NME, the Foals frontman recounts his lack of memory of his awards speech and a rather awkward encounter he had later in the evening with The Cure’s legendary lead singer Robert Smith: “We were at the NME Awards, which is famously sloppy, and I think that I’d quit smoking, and I was drinking quickly, you know. I was really putting them away. And I get kind of nervous at those things anyway, like I think probably most people do. But, you know, I didn’t feel at ease.” Philippakis continued: “I got battered, basically got super drunk, and then we did win something. We went up there and I gave an interview that I think has been sort of scorched like it’s been taken out. There was video, but and I didn’t remember this until the next day, but I was like I was dancing in it and saying all sorts of stuff, but the thing I remember was looking at like some of my bandmates faces and like, you know, I was performing for the for the interview and for the interview and for the camera and then looking over and just kind of getting these mortified looks. But it was mid flow, you know, no one could stop me… I was just charged and I was going, and then we had to do a photo right after. So we’re backstage there where they were doing all the stuff, and Robert Smith’s there and he’s doing photos, and I’m refusing to leave the room in order to get a photo of Robert Smith. And I just remember one point, Edwin [Congreave, ex-Foals keyboardist], who has now left the band, being like, ‘please don’t embarrass me in front of Robert Smith. Please don’t embarrass me.’ I’m like, ‘I’m gonna get us a photo. Robert Smith!” 

He concluded: “So we did manage to get a photo with Robert Smith, but it wasn’t good. And then the next day I woke up and did not remember the interview at all – or the photo! And somebody in the band had to be like, ‘Oh, yeah, I remember. You were showing off and dancing around’. So yeah, it was all in all pretty bad. And I saw and apologised to Robert Smith recently.”

The Icon award has been a category recognized by the event for previous years, in 2018 the accolade was awarded to Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson and in 2020 grunge icon Courtney Love was awarded the prize. The award is bestowed to those who have earned the title through their work within the music, fashion and culture. With a discography full of highly influential records and a career spanning three decades, Cherry is the epitome of an Icon.

The 57-year-old artist has provided the following statement concerning her win, “Life is a series of ups and downs – along the way I’ve tried to get better at loving myself but ultimately it’s the love from others given then received that makes that possible, I’ve just tried to hold my corner and serve with truth, all made possible by the great visionaries I’ve come up and collaborated with along the way – you know what they say… it takes a village. To wake up one day to hear I’m being given an Icon Award seems crazy, but I’ll take it with great honour, so thank you NME.”

Cherry first made her name within the punk rock scene in London, during the early 1980’s she was part of Rip Rig + Panic and the legendary group The Slits. Her first major breakthrough came with the release of her debut album Raw Like Sushi, the 1989 album sired her best-loved track “Buffalo Stance”. The single gained critical acclaim through its incorporation of different genres and is known as a hybrid of hip-hop, electronica and pop.

The Swedish hitmaker is no stranger to accolades, Cherry won two Brit awards in 1990 for Best International Breakthrough and Best International Solo Artist. She was also nominated in 1990 for Best Video for single “Manchild”, Cherry was also nominated in 1991 and 1997 for the Brit award of Best International Female. The singer was also nominated for a Grammy Award in 1990 for Best New Artist and won the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Song for “7 Seconds” in 1994.

The annual awards show continues to be an important tradition within popular music, the show was first held in 1953 and was initially named the NME Poll Winners Concerts. Since its inception, the awards have grown into a British institution and have held importance through various genres of music including the 90’s Britpop era. Through its expansive multiple awards categories were added, the ceremony now includes 34 categories within their global nominations, 6 categories of UK nominations, 5 prizes for nominations in Asia and Australia.

The awards ceremony will be co-hosted by Daisy May Cooper and Lady Leshurr and will feature performances by Sam Fender, Rina Sawayama, Griff, BERWYN and Chvrches. This year’s event will also celebrate another musical icon, The Cure’s frontman Robert Smith will join the other performers in March. Despite many winners already named, music fans are still able to cast their vote for two categories, Hero of the Year and Villain of the year.
