English music producer James Ellis Ford has released a new single, “Squeaky Wheel”, ahead of the release of his debut album, The Hum. The album, set to be released on May 12th, will be the first solo project Staffordshire-born Ford has worked on, having previously collaborated with other artists in a producer role and as a band member, and will thus see him embark on his very own musical journey wherein he can focus on exactly what he wants to do with his music in his own way.

‘Squeaky Wheel’ – new from James Ellis Ford

— Warp Records (@WarpRecords) April 12, 2023

Ford initiated his music career in 2000 as a founding member of rock band Simian before teaming up with Jas Shaw from the aforementioned group and forming the spin-off duo Simian Mobile Disco in 2003, this time with a focus on electronic music. The duo have enjoyed a fair deal of success since, even amassing somewhat of a cult following, but have been on hiatus ever since Shaw was diagnosed with AL amyloidosis in 2018, which has in turn afforded Ford the chance to think about producing music solo on his own terms.

Watch the video for “It’s The Beat”, the lead single from Simian Mobile Disco’s first album Attack Decay Sustain Release, below:

Ford is also a founding member of The Last Shadow Puppets, formed in 2008 with Alex Turner, Miles Kane and Zach Dawes, yet his musical exploits do not stop there. He has producing credits on 55 albums, most notably Klaxon’s Myths of the Near Future (2007), Florence and the Machine’s Ceremonials (2011), Gorillaz’ The Now Now (2016), and all of Artic Monkeys’ records to date, and plays a multitude of instruments on many, mainly on drums, keyboard and percussion.

Quite the CV then. With this quite frankly stupendous amount of musical prowess Ford naturally sets the bar sky high, and fans of Simian Mobile Disco and The Last Shadow Puppets, and possibly even Artic Monkeys themselves, will undoubtedly be tremendously excited by what Ford has to offer in his first solo outing.

If we are to judge the rest of the album by the two singles released from it already (“I Never Wanted Anything” is the other track), we should expect dreamy, partly funky, partly Pink Floyd-esque vibes. Tape loops are used immaculately in both songs, lending an ethereal touch that allows them to float on and along flawlessly whilst simultaneously giving the tracks a satisfying cohesive arc.

Listen to “Squeaky Wheel” below:

Our country music’s next star, Margo Price, has come forward with a re-invention of her recent release “Change Of Heart” in collaboration with Sierra Ferrell, another big country name. Stolen from her recent album release Stray, they come together to mould the song into a more stripped back and acoustic version.

The original release charted as number 1 during 14 consecutive days in America. While the guitar riffs evoke us into an alt-rock subsequence after following her country voice of silk, you can’t help but fall for the electronic blues smothering, making up the whole song. Never failing to transition her songwriting into novel-like stories, she captured the backbone of the song and has revealed its core meaning in this new collaborative version.

Following her Stray and “Change Of Heart” release, she will be taking to the stage in London. On the 25th of August she will be hosting an intimate show at the Lafayette venue in South London. However, she has just announced an additional gig in the UK, following right after el London appearance. On the 26th August she will be performing at The London Road Festival in Bottesford.

These London appearances aren’t the only plans in her diary, though. The singer has a long journey ahead of her, visiting amphitheatre performances as well as arena bookings of which she will be sharing these dates with artists such as Chris Stapleton, Tyler Childers and Willie Nelson. She is now making her way through the United States and will be wrapping up on the 6th October, alongside Stapleton, at the Bryce Jordan Centre found in Pennsylvania.

Price took to this album in a kind, yet diligent, manner. Praising herself and observing the happenings of the outer world around her from a safe distance. A freedom-filled and mushroom fueled workpiece, taken to an asserted appreciation of her surroundings. This is her fourth studio album and a landmark in breaking the long awaited collaboration between the two country/folk singers on “Change Of Heart”.

During Women’s History Month, Margo Price says, “I’m real excited to share this stripped down take on ‘Change of Heart’ featuring Sierra Ferrell. Sierra is one of my favorite new voices in music and I loved getting to work with her on this acoustic version of the song.” She continues “I love to lift up other women in the genre when I see somebody putting out great art. In an industry that tries to drive us apart, it’s freeing to break down those barriers and say, “there is room for everyone.”

The brits should consider purchasing a London show to see Margo Price because, due to her track record, she doesn’t step on English grounds very often. Her last gig in the UK sits back in March, 2018, when she played at the Country 2 Country Festival hosted at the O2.

Tickets are available here.

UK Tour Dates:

25/08/2023 – Lafayette – London

Harvey has released the demos for Dry, among other previously released demo vinyl’s last year and the track The Mess Were In. The demos are available in vinyl and also for streaming on YouTube as of yesterday January 5th, 2021.

Despite the promotional effort with the 2020 and 2021 album and demo reissue series, PJ Harvey has not had any recent performances or new music and does not have any shows coming in he 2021 year as of yet. This is likely due to safety concerns surrounding the growing global health crisis Covid-19, especially with the new lockdown laws that were announced last week in the UK

Manchester rockers, Prognosis, have announced a brand new line-up of musicians for their band and simultaneously released the new group’s first single together Dark Waters. The new track was released with a YouTube official music video set to red lighting, fittingly festive. On a social-media post announcing the news, original members Danny Daemon and Phil Weller named the new additions with please welcome the crazily talented Lewin Cantor (guitar) and Yan Akoya (drums) to Prognosis and check out our first song together!

Dark Waters is the second single released off the group’s forthcoming second album which is still in the process of writing. Prognosis released Into The Grey 3 months ago, along with a music video of its own, however, Dark Waters still appears to be the first song that the new members Cantor and Akoya have contributed to.

Upon discussion of the decision to add new members to Prognosis, founding member Weller noted that 2020 was a shock to the system for every band, but amidst all of this pandemic, changing half of our line-up was something none of us expected. Weller continues on a hopeful note, saying that ultimately though I think the shake up has done us the world of good. We feel revitalised; it felt like the stars aligned for us with Yan and Lewin joining the band. They’re exceptional talents and we feel pretty invincible right now!

Prognosis was forced to cancel all live performances, for which they made their career, due to safety concerns surrounding the current Covid-19 global pandemic. The group has not made any plans to return to the stage in 2021 as of yet, however, they have described this latest single as being incredibly relatable to issues around the pandemic.

When describing Dark Waters, Prognosis stated that lyrically, the song talks about dealing with and reflecting on everything we’ve been through in 2020. The overarching message is one of rebirth; coming through hard times – rising out of dark waters – with a greater strength and self-confidence having survived the experience. And away from the band, we feel it’s something everyone can relate to as we enter the final weeks of a really dire year. We are all emerging from out of dark waters right now.

Prognosis has not ruled out live shows in 2021 however, stating that of course we’ll be back playing shows when the time comes. We miss live music and we miss our fans, but we’re incredibly excited for the future of this band. With the additions of guitarist Cantor and drummer Akoya, the band looks to the future as they describe their future after Dark Waters saying that behind the scenes we’re using Dark Waters as the cornerstone to our second album, which we are deep into writing.

Dark Waters is available on YouTube in the form of the group’s newest music video and will be available for download and streaming on December 24th, this Thursday. Their first single, minus the new line-up, Into the Grey is available on YouTube and for streaming now.

After a long break following their second album ‘All Your Happy Life,‘ and an even longer break since their debut ‘Annabel Dream Reader,’ The Wytches have finally returned with a third effort, called ‘Three Mile Ditch,’ which they believe to be the ‘best yet’ as they state themselves, announcing the news on their instagram page. While the news will not come as a surprise to some of their fans, many of whom will have tuned into their halloween performance which was livestreamed in IGTV on the last day of October, it will certainly be welcome news to those eager to get their hands on a pre-ordered vinyl copy, especially now that we are in lockdown once again.

The Brighton Surf-Doom rockers have righteous pride in this new work which has all the sinister edge and grizzly snarl of their debut with an even spookier halloween feel in tracks like ‘Cowboy,’ which have the atmosphere of a cowboy zombie apocalypse. The trio have always had a dark, despondent outlook and their music reflects this. However, until now they always seemed out of step with the world in their darkness. Now The Wytches are oddly comparable with the mood of the times, the dark and shadowy wails which they have been making since 2014 are likely very similar to the noises circulating through the minds of all of us trapped in this global nightmare.

Although tracks from the album have been available to listen to on Bandcamp for a little while now, the coming of the official release day will be the cause of much excitement amongst die hard fans of the band who are part of a very special movement, the vinyl revival. The Wytches fit into that unique category of Brighton bands in the Indie or Alternative journal which attract the type of fans who are true believers in the ideology of vinyl superiority over all mediums, as well as a good understanding of the economic nightmare which faces artists trying to live on streaming royalties alone.

Three Mile Ditch by The Wytches
Fans of the band are also the type of niche hipster who maintains a very particular nostalgic fondness for cassette tapes. While they must admit to themselves that the sound quality on a cassette is hardly a good enough reason on its own to invest in the dated technology, there is a certain blocky charm to the things and they have a nice satisfying feel in the hands. Cassette tapes, vinyl as well as CDs, T-shirts and Art prints are all available for super fans to purchase directly from the band on their Bandcamp profile, which is one of the best sites out their for ensure that the artists get a fair share of the revenue from their creative works.

In fact, Bandcamp has on a number of occasions chosen to waive their revenue share of sales made on the site meaning that artists get every penny of every sale made on such days. The album can also be purchased on vinyl or CD from independent record stores such as Brighton’s Resident Records.

For Celeste fans, 2020 has been a good year. The London-based singer has released several singles in the past few months. One was a cover of Edith Piaf’s signature song, ‘La Vie En Rose’. This showcased the full range of her voice, while her lyrical song-writing skills shone through in ‘Stop This Flame’ and ‘I Can See the Change’. ‘Stop This Flame’ is a foot-tapping anthem for independent women, fitting for Celeste whose meteoric rise to fame has seen her win awards and gain recognition across the board. In 2019 she was awarded the Brits’ Rising Star Award and this year won BBC Music’s Sound of 2020.

yesterday was surreal I won the BBC Sound of 2020 … I have a NEW song out called “Stop This Flame” and my biggest show yet sold out see you in April if you got tickets I can’t waitttpic.twitter.com/GcZ8HqIh9H

— Celeste (@celeste) January 10, 2020

Celeste has always had a connection with music. She spent her childhood in LA, where she drove around her grandfather’s cherry-red jag listening to Aretha Franklin. Aretha became one of her biggest artistic inspirations. In her interview with the BBC she spoke of her appreciation for Franklin’s ‘raw delivery and emotion‘ as well as her ‘storytelling‘ prowess.

Perhaps this is why Celeste’s own music feels so real and confessional. Annie Mac, BBC Radio 1 host, described the singer’s music as ‘personal‘ and said that she had received ‘countless emotional texts from listeners who have had to sit in their car and loose themselves to her song ‘Strange’ before carrying on with their evening‘.

Unsurprisingly, Celeste draws on personal experience to write her songs. One of her 2019 creations, ‘Father’s Son’, is an ‘emotional ode to absent fathers‘. Celeste’s own father passed away when she was 16, and this jazzy soulful song is an examination of loss and genetics. ‘Maybe I’m an echo…with the same eyes we both see’ she softly sings, followed by ‘Oh I’m nothing like you’. The power of this song lies in its complex exploration of how those who have passed live on in their children, reminiscent in its content to Mike Skinner’s powerful ‘Never Went to Church‘.

There is no doubt that Celeste’s new release will deliver truthful story-telling in jazzy tones, so don’t forget to check it out at 7.30pm tommorow.

You may not know who Lynks Afrikka is yet. His most streamed song on Spotify, How to be Successful, only has 74,779 plays. But it is clear Afrikka defines success in different terms.

23 year old Eliot Brett, the man behind the flamboyant make-up and costumes, says that creating Lynks Afrikka was all about making something ‘entertaining and interesting‘. This has certainly been achieved. Like Grayson Perry, Brett uses humour and bravado to comment astutely on society and politics. The last track of ‘Smash Hits, Vol.1‘, Pandemic, finishes with the words: ‘Boris Johnson likes big business// and if I catch him walking ’round Brixton// I’ll cut his fingers off right at the signet’.

Although Lynks Afrikka may not have entirely hit the mainstream yet, he has already attracted the attention of publications like DIY, Loud and Quiet and NME. NME hailed his humorously titled EP ‘Smash Hits, Vol.1‘ as a ‘thumping success’, drawing attention to deadpan lines like the one describing straight clubs as ‘a lot like a pub but with slightly less chairs’. ‘Smash Hits, Vol 1.5 – All Star Charity Remix Addition‘, dropping today, will be a remix of these socially conscious dance tracks.

The release features remixes from exciting London musicians Happyness (who share a love for drag), PVA and Glows, to name a few. These musicians all have connections with Brixton’s The Windmill, a famed institution that has been fostering and showcasing new British talent since the early 2000s.

‘Smash Hits, Vol 1.5 – All Star Charity Remix Addition‘ is well worth purchasing, especially considering all proceeds go to such a worthwhile cause.
