The headline acts for Deva Fest 2024 have been officially unveiled, with The Human League, Ocean Colour Scene, and The Coral set to command the stage. Cheshire’s picturesque Cholmondeley Castle is gearing up to host the festival for its fourth consecutive year, promising a “family-friendly” experience. The upcoming festival is scheduled to unfold over an expansive weekend, commencing on August 8 through to August 11.

Tickets for the general public are currently on sale here, with a variety of ticket options available, including single-night camping, day passes, weekend passes, and family packages. The introduction of a Family One ticket provides families with one child a discounted rate on individual ticket prices. Ticket purchasers also have the option to pay off the balance in installments.

Deva Fest has gained popularity for its diverse lineup, bringing together a mix of established and emerging artists. Acts slated to appear alongside the headliners include Rebecca Ferguson, Toyah Wilcox & Robert Fripp, East 17, Sleeper, and Symphonic Ibiza.

Founder Phil Marston expressed excitement about the festival’s return to Cholmondeley Castle, stating, “After the huge success last year, we didn’t think we’d be able to top it, but we’re confident this is our best lineup yet. We’re delighted to have already sold thousands of tickets in our pre-sale and it’s great to see so many people will be returning to the festival for the fourth time. Deva Fest aims to bring you a festival that has top quality musicians and comedians, fantastic street food and drink from local vendors, and entertainment the whole family can enjoy together.”

Deva Fest attracted 15,000 visitors over the course of the three-day weekend event in 2023. Consequently, this year, organisers have introduced a fourth night on Thursday, August 8, featuring performances on the Heart and Soul Stage, including pop singer and songwriter Tom Speight.

The festival’s diverse lineup spans multiple genres, with Friday featuring rising Country star Harleymoon Kemp, electronic duo Utah Saints, and the return of Symphonic Ibiza. The Coral are set to headline Friday’s events.

Saturday’s lineup includes tribute bands Oasis Ltd and The Amy Winehouse Band, as well as performances by British legends East 17 and Rebecca Ferguson. The Human League will close the Saturday night lineup.

Sunday will see the return of festival favourite tribute band Foo Fighterz, blues and roots rock duo When Rivers Meet, Brit Pop legends Sleeper, and Toyah Willcox & Robert Fripp. Ocean Colour Scene are set to close the festival with their ’90s hits.

Rebecca Ferguson, who previously brought to light the poor treatment she faced as a young artist within the music industry has decided to take her fight forward. The singer is demanding the British Parliament to take more active measures to regulate the treatment of artists within the music industry. The singer has been using her social media and celebrity platform to disclose her experiences in the music industry. And now, within a series of Tweets and further communication, Ferguson is getting serious and gaining traction within Government already.

Alongside her call for action from Parliament, the singer has taken to Twitter to voice her demand for a music industry ombudsman.

At one point in my career I collapsed 3 times in a day I was unconscious! My head hit the floor! No ambulance was called! This is one of many stories. This is the reality of artist mistreatment this is why I fight! #musicindustryombudsman

Ferguson later posted amended Tweets in which the singer calls for an ombudsman to oversee all creative and artistic industries, not just within the music industry but also the fashion industry, after citing conversations with individuals who have expressed that they have suffered similar experiences to Ferguson’s.

I have had some ‘Fashion Models’ approach me and ‘Photographers’ they have also been mistreated I’m shocked at the stories! The Ombudsman should cover all Creative industries! ‘All’ Artists and creatives should be protected. — Rebecca Ferguson (@RebeccaFMusic) April 7, 2021

Ferguson is set to meet with Britain’s Secretary of state for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Oliver Dowden. The meeting will take place in May and will allow Ferguson to discuss the need to protect and ensure the welfare of musicians and artists within the music industry. The ‘Too Good to Lose’ singer took to Twitter to share her joy over the progress made and confirming her meeting with Dowden.

Great news! Some really positive progress…

Thank you ‘Secretary of State’ @OliverDowden for coming back to me.
I look forward to meeting with you about Artist Welfare and my proposals/recommendations to have a Music Industry Regulator/Ombudsman. https://t.co/wYHjqX9Vrr

A letter on behalf of Ferguson, written for a call for action from Parliament, states, “The music industry is currently very much front of mind with the Commons Select Committee as the economics of music streaming is in the process of an investigation. Rebecca is calling for the Select Committee to extend the interrogation beyond just streaming and for artist welfare to come under the microscope.”

The letter also informs of the singer’s actions entailing contacting ‘a major UK broadcaster’ and Ofcom, The Office of Communications, a government-run authority that regulates TV, Radio as well as similar media. Ferguson hopes that in making contact with the broadcaster and Ofcom, they will launch a serious investigation into the care of artists, musicians as well as those involved in reality media. The letter also speaks of the seriousness of Ferguson’s proposals and demands, “My proposals are not very different to other businesses, I just want the people working within the industry to have somebody above them, so they can never become so powerful that their actions are unpunishable.”

The X factor finalist has not been alone in being outspoken against the industry – the singer’s colleagues John and Edward Grimes have also voiced their disapproval over the treatment of artists they have witnessed throughout their career. The Jedward singers, whose career was also launched by the talent show X-Factor, took to Twitter to also make a stand.

Ferguson, who has been readying herself to take on the world for the cause, started the fight last month when the singer launched her petition. The petition called for a change within the music industry and so far has acquired 63,662 supporters.

The petition can be signed here.

Rebecca Ferguson has bravely spoken out concerning bullying, blackmailing and misconduct from music bosses during her career through a series of tweets, and promises that she will not stay silent about her experiences anymore.

The 34-year-old singer-songwriter has used her Twitter platform to convey how she was mistreated by various music bosses within the music industry.

I am not even being silent anymore, You forced me to sign contracts, blackmailed me, bullied me, robbed me, I am not even being scared anymore I have looked back and I am disgusted in how you all treated an innocent young woman! who just wanted to sing! shame on you!

— Rebecca Ferguson (@RebeccaFMusic) March 6, 2021

She continued to add how due to an incident with a certain individual, the singer was blocked from initially finding success in the US, which is extremely hurtful to any artist’s career “Up until 3 years ago, my music was blocked In the U.S because I offended a music boss!! what type of man would bully a young innocent girl? I had to request for the ban to be lifted!”

Ferguson continued to post tweets about her experience within the music industry, leading the singer to apologise for her Tweets whilst reflecting on her career during her younger years “Sorry for the rant, I am in a good place now thankfully! I was looking back tonight at my old videos and it brought up so many emotions and it broke my heart seeing how crushed I was and what they did to me, and I can’t believe people stood back and allowed that to happen.”

She also gave thanks for her life now as well as her support system.

On a final positive note, I have a great and loving team around me now and I have found happiness which I am really proud of, I overcame and I survived it! and I am proud of myself for that and thankful to my fans and the people that supported me throughout. x

— Rebecca Ferguson (@RebeccaFMusic) March 6, 2021

Rebecca Ferguson started her career as the first female runner up of the British talent show, ‘X Factor’ losing the competition to Matt Cardle who won the seventh series in 2010. Her debut album ‘Heaven’ was released in December 2011 and peaked at Number three in the charts. The singer’s debut went platinum twice in the UK and at the time of release was the fastest selling debut album from a solo artist from the years of 2007-2017. The singer won the nation over quickly and became an audience favourite on show. She famously blew the judges away with her final performance with a cover of Duffy song, ‘Distant Dreamer’. Her most recent release was the single, ‘No Words Needed‘, which saw the songstress reunite with Nile Rodgers, Legendary Chic co-founder, whom she has worked with prior.

In response to Ferguson’s experience the singer has started a petition for a regulatory body whose aim is to protect artists, namely young or inexperienced artists whom would otherwise get taken advantage of or mistreated just how Ferguson was. Many artists have come to the support of the petition, particularly Lily Allen who retweeted the singer’s post urging for signatures.

With Ferguson’s fearless attitude gaining more likes and comments as the days unfold, inspiration will no doubt spark more victims of such abuse to come forward.

The list of performers for the virtual concert includes Cliff Richard; Rod Stewart; Robbie Williams; Manic Street Preachers frontman James Dean Bradfield; Simple Minds; Neil Young; Tony Bennett; Kaiser Chiefs; Rebecca Ferguson; Freya Ridings; Jack Savoretti and soul songstress Mica Paris. There will also be appearances from Led Zeppelin troubadour Robert Plant, The Who’s Roger Daltrey and Coloradan pop-rockers OneRepublic.

The musical sets will be interspersed with traditional and topical Christmas readings from British stars of stage and screen. Speakers will include Bill Nighy; Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and Rebecca star Lily James; actor, playwright and singer Kwame Kwei-Armah; Olivier Award winner Noma Dumezweni; and Freddie Fox.

Nordoff Robbins – founded in 1959 by Handsworth-born special education teacher Clive Robbins and American composer and pianist Paul Nordoff – helps provide therapy to music to those affected by life-limiting illness, isolation or disability. The charity works with over 270 organisations across the UK; including schools, care homes, hospitals, mental health units, hospices, and neuro-rehab centres.

Previewing the gig this week, the charity’s Instagram page states: “Nordoff Robbins has been severely impacted by #COVID-19. Most of our fundraising activities have been cancelled, meaning we are expecting to lose over 50% of our income in 2020, putting music therapy at risk of stopping for the people who need it most. Our #SingForNordoffRobbins online Christmas concert will help raise vital funds for our music therapy.”

Host Nile Rodgers, the guitar behemoth behind the iconic sound of Chic and Sister Sledge, t0ld Music Week that he had a personal connection with the charity. He said “Nordoff Robbins music therapy is a charity close to my heart as I’ve witnessed the power of music first hand. I’ve seen how music connects with people all over the world in a way that nothing else can so when I heard that Nordoff Robbins were taking their annual carol service online, I jumped at the chance to host the event and to bring along some of my closest musical friends to help spread some Christmas cheer.”

The veteran hit-maker added “I know how hard this year has been for everyone, in particular charities. Because of the pandemic, Nordoff Robbins are expecting to lose much of their fundraising income. This means they are able to help less people, including children with autism who rely on music therapy for a sense of connection or those affected by life-limiting illnesses or disability – even though their services are needed now more than ever.“

After finishing in second place on the X Factor in 2010, Rebecca was excited to begin her new music career. However, she made the decision to take a step back from her career two years ago, following attempts to speak out on racial prejudice and abuse of power from higher ups in the music industry, that fell on deaf ears. She spoke to the Metro about that time, saying; “I felt like doors just got closed for me. I had loads of interviews lined up and I was supposed to talk about these matters and every door got closed.”

It was her work with Nile Rodgers that re-affirmed her love for music. Speaking to the Metro, Rebecca spoke about how her work with Nile came at a perfect time in her life, and how his positive outlook helped her make the comeback to her career. She explained; “To then meet Nile, who is so positive about everything – because he’s had such a hard life, he’s fought cancer twice and his outlook on life is you only live once – he changed the way I think about life.”

The pair were introduced by a mutual friend, but finally got together at Abbey Road Studios in London, while Rebecca was attending a meeting there. Nile called her into the studio and asked her opinion on a track. She suggested some things that could add to it and just like that he asked her to go into the studio and sing it. She has said how he then said he wanted to produce her work, in the interview with the Metro she said; “I think it was a bit of luck, me being in the right place at the right time.”
