Speaking about the Reading and Leeds Festival 2019 earlier this year, festival boss, Melvin Benn, said: “The key thing about any festival is that you don’t stand still. I’m very clear on that. You can’t keep drumming up the same acts and expect people to continue to come and see them. Festivals have to be a reflection of what the public are listening to.”

Despite this being the first headline show at Reading & Leeds for the majority of the acts, this will be the fourth headline performance by Foo Fighters. Following their previous shows in 2002, 2005, and 2012. It will also be the fourth performance by the 1975, who have played the festival three times in total, with the last time in 2016, which saw the group headline the NME/Radio 1 Stage.

Matty Healy, frontman of the Manchester-based band The 1975, spoke to NME about how their performances at the festival have fulfilled a childhood dream. “The reason we’re doing it is I need to headline Reading and Leeds festival, because we went there as fans when we were kids,” Healy told NME. “Every time I [play] it, it’s like I might as well have just been there in the pit, jumped over the barrier and grabbed the mic. That’s how I feel at that festival. It’s sick. We went to Leeds like 10 times when we were kids.”
