The comical pair’s new radio show will start on Sunday 8th August 2021 from 7 pm until 9 pm and will run throughout this August every Sunday night. This is not the duo’s first time presenting, Gallagher and Morgan will bring their broadcasting experience and skills from Morgan’s podcast to their new radio series. The podcast titled ‘Matt Morgan’s Funny How?’ sees Morgan joined by special guests each episode, the host and guests engage in a comical QA type of interview which explores whimsical and pop culture fuelled questions. Gallagher has been a guest on the comedian’s podcast several times and joined his long-term friend on the podcast’s first episode, aired on 13th January 2020.

Gallagher and Morgan’s new radio show will no doubt be full of laughs and honest conversation and will see “Noel and Matt setting the world to rights”, the show will also be available to watch on-demand via Global Player. The new series will also feature some specially curated music by Gallagher, the former Oasis member will pick a collection of his favourite music to include within the new Radio X show. Similar to Morgan’s podcast series, the radio series will also feature a QA segment which will see the duo answer questions from fans.

The Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds founder has provided the following description of what listeners can expect from Radio X’s new series, “You lucky little indie kids are getting the pleasure of mine and the thinking man’s fuddy-duddy Matt Morgan’s company for a Residency. You’ll be hearing some great tunes, and a lot of nonsense, being spouted mostly by me! Tune in… you might learn summat. NG.”

Managing Editor for the radio network has also spoken on the exciting news, in the following statement, Matt Deverson describes the station’s history with the musician and hails Gallagher and Morgan for their distinctive manner, “Whether it be through Oasis or the 10 years of his High Flying Birds, Noel Gallagher’s music is part of the fabric of Radio X, and I’m delighted that the man himself will be hosting a show on the station. He’s teamed up with his good mate Matt Morgan, and as a man who’s never short of a word to say, I can’t wait to hear them put the world to rights in their own unique style, as well as pick some of their favourite tunes. Noel Gallagher really does live on Radio X.”

Radio X has been a staple within the alternative and Indie music scene since its inception in 1992, the station was formally known as Xfm until 21st September 2015 when the network was rebranded to Radio X. One of the station’s founders, Sammy Jacob, would go on to co-create NME Radio in 2008 and in 2015 Jacob founded CDNX (Camden Experience), the radio service which celebrates Camden’s heritage and music. Once the station was rebranded to Radio X, the network gained a collection of well-known new presenters such as Chris Moyles, Ricky Wilson, Johnny Vaughan and Vernon Kay, who recently participated in the British reality TV show, ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here’. The arrival of Radio X was fully confirmed by the 2004 Girls Aloud track ‘Love Machine’, which was the first song to be played on the new station at 7 am on 21st September 2021 on Chris Moyles’ show.

Radio X is broadcasted on 104.9 FM in London, 97.7 FM in Manchester and is available to listen to across the UK on DAB digital radio services. The network shows are also available to view on Global Player, the free and downloadable media player on any iOS and Android device. Listeners and viewers can also view the station’s content via the website radiox.co.uk.

It’s almost Christmas time and controversy around the language in The Pogues’ mega-hit Fairytale of New York begins once again as holiday radio nears. BBC Radio 1 has announced that it will air a new censored version of the famous duet with Kirsty MacColl. BBC Radio 2 will continue to air the original explicit version.

The censored version to be played this Christmas will exclude the words ‘slut’ and ‘faggot’. BBC Radio 1 hosts have stated they will be removing these two words in an effort to not offend members of the LGBTQ+ community and younger audiences who might be particularly sensitive to offensive language towards women and especially sexuality.

Fairytale of New York was released November 23rd, 1987 and featured on The Pogues’ album If I Should Fall from Grace with God. It’s original release only made it #2 on the UK Christmas hits, however, since then it has reached triple platinum in sales. In 2019 it was awarded the title of The Most Played Christmas Song in the UK of the 21st Century.

The beginning of the controversy surrounding this Irish Christmas folk-song began in 2007 when BBC Radio 1 released an edited version in an attempt to avoid any offence taken by listeners. The Pogues stated it was amusing and ridiculous to them. After mass outrage, BBC Radio 1 reversed its position and continued to play the original version through the holiday season.

‘Morning https://t.co/xnoWEhjOl1

2018 saw a much wider call to remove the offensive language from the track, or remove it from the radio-stations all together, however, the original version continued to dominate radio plays. MacGowan from the band defended the words once and for all in a statement on The Tonight Show, saying, “The word was used by the character because it fitted with the way she would speak and with her character. She is not supposed to be a nice person, or even a wholesome person. She is a woman of a certain generation at a certain time in history and she is down on her luck and desperate.”

Her dialogue is as accurate as I could make it but she is not intended to offend! […]If people don’t understand that I was trying to accurately portray the character as authentically as possible, then I am absolutely fine with them bleeping the word, but I don’t want to get into an argument.”

In 2019 there was still no censorship on the song on the Christmas radios and mixed reactions and opinions on whether it should be allowed on air was still broadly up for debate. Despite the dispute, the song received its most streams and downloads last year then ever before.

Even now in 2020 there continues to be split beliefs among all generations and communities throughout the UK on whether to censor Fairytale of New York. BBC Radio 1 has made headlines with the call to censor the iconic holiday hit from The Guardian to The Gay Times to CNN and all BBC radios have now been instructed to make the best decision based on their audiences.

On Friday, a new radio station named Union Jack was launched that resolves to only play music recorded by British artists. The station, created by the team behind Jack FM, who have three stations broadcasting in Oxford, Reading and Hampshire, will be available via interactive apps and online at UnionJack.co.uk.

It has been launched by the team behind Absolute Radio and cuts out literally all American hip-hop, European pop and any other non-UK music artists.

The station has a specific target audience of 40-to-54 year-olds and will feature the likes of Tom Odell, Jake Bugg and Biffy Clyro. It was promised that there will be no DJ talking, instead there would just be songs requested by the listeners.

A promotion video was released prior to the launch, you can watch it below.

“We have conducted a huge amount of research and the feedback confirmed that there is a massive gap in the radio for a new national station that promotes the very best of British music,” said Donnach O’Driscoll for the Guardian.

The new station follows the same model as Jack FM, which is popular in the US, where listeners pick from thousands of songs on the station’s app, which then enter its daily playlist according to whichever songs are most popularly picked.

Ian Walker, co-CEO said: “Britain has been at the forefront of groundbreaking music for over six decades. Union JACK will lead the way in celebrating this rich heritage, playing the greatest UK music and also discovering and supporting British new talent.”

Here’s a sample of what the radio station plays:
Madness – Driving In My Car
Cult – She Sells Sanctuary
Keane – Somewhere Only We Know
Status Quo – Whatever You Want
Fleetwood Mac – Go Your Own Way
Yes – Owner of a Lonely Heart
James Blunt – 1973
Bastille – Good Grief
The Undertones – Teenage Kicks
Royal Blood – Where Are You Now
