Pink Floyd genius David Gilmour’s “Black Strat” has participated in more of rock music’s history than possibly any other singular instrument. Heard throughout 1973’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon’, the fourth best selling album of all time, it painted its legacy through Pink Floyd’s music in the 70s and 80s, as well as Gilmour’s solo work. This week it sold at auction for the second time, raking in a record-breaking $14.5 million.

David Gilmour joined the fledgling Pink Floyd as singer and guitarist in 1967 shortly before the departure of maverick Syd Barrett. Following an incident in 1970 where the band’s gear was stolen in New Orleans and they cancelled their US tour, Gilmour purchased the fairly nondescript black Fender Stratocaster in Manny’s Music, a New York City guitar dealers. After several modifications to the paint and the features of the guitar, it was ready to make its mark on the world.

The Black Strat- David Gilmour’s well-worn 1969 Fender Stratocaster

Speaking to Prog Magazine before the Black Strat’s initial sale in 2019, Gilmour said “it became my main guitar, the one I used pretty much on everything, unless there was a reason to want a different sound. So that’s definitely on ‘Meddle’, it’s on ‘Dark Side of the Moon’, ‘Comfortably Numb’. The four notes at the beginning of ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’ popped out of this very guitar, because it was there and in my hands! What can you say? It’s definitely earned its keep.”

After rifts with Pink Floyd founder Roger Waters, Gilmour reignited his solo career with UK number one album ‘On An Island’ in 2006, which saw the restored Black Strat in use for recording and touring. In 2008, Fender’s Custom Shop created a Signature Black Stratocaster in its honour, fitting to Gilmour’s specifications. His guitar tech Phil Taylor, who was responsible for its modifications and upkeep, published ‘The Black Strat’ in 2007, a chronicling of its physical evolution.

In 2019, David Gilmour parted with the guitar at a charity sale in New York, at the famed Christie’s auction house. It sold for a then-highest value of $3.975 million (currently just shy of £3 million) to US billionaire Jim Irsay, whose collection also contained other top-selling guitars from Gilmour, Kurt Cobain, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, George Harrison and John Lennon. Its value was surpassed in 2020 by the $6 million (£4.5 million) sale of Cobain’s 1959 Martin D-18E acoustic guitar, best known for its use on Nirvana’s 1994 ‘MTV Unplugged’ set.

Following Irsay’s passing in May last year, his collection estimated to be worth over $1 billion is currently being auctioned off, again at Christie’s. According to Billboard, the Black Strat was the subject of an intense 21-minute bidding war, before being sold to an as-yet unnamed online buyer for a staggering new peak of $14.5 million (£10.9 million). Also sold this week was Grateful Dead legend Jerry Garcia’s custom-made “Tiger” guitar, which went for over $10 million (£7.5 million).

David Gilmour celebrated his 80th birthday last week, on the 6th of March, also the 20th anniversary of ‘On An Island’. His latest release is 2024 album ‘Luck and Strange’ and it’s 2025 live performance recording ‘The Luck and Strange Concerts’, both of which are available for purchase on his website.

Pink Floyd have released the second single from their upcoming concert film remaster, Pink Floyd at Pompeii MCMLXXII. The concert version of ‘One Of These Days’, which opened up the then recently-released ‘Meddle’, follows ‘Echoes – Part One’, which was released in February. The singles are taken from a soundtrack album, set for release on 2 May, supporting the limited theatrical run for the film, beginning on 24 April.

The restoration effort uses the original 35mm footage, accompanied with newly mixed audio, courtesy of Steven Wilson. The 2025 version of the film will be the fourth iteration, and with the upcoming film featuring documentary footage of the band working on ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’, it seems it will be a remaster of the 1974 edition, which was the most commercially successful cut too. The accompanying soundtrack album marks the first time that an album has been released alongside a theatrical cut too.

The film was directed by Adrian Maben, who also conceived of the project. Maben envisioned the would-be concert as an “anti-Woodstock”, where the amphitheater itself could be used as an instrument, and the band would play amongst the natural sounds of their environment. Drummer Nick Mason revealed that Maben described the idea as being “where there would be nobody present, and the music and the silence… would mean as much as, if not more than, a crowd of thousands.”

Filmed in 1971 and released in 1972, the first version of the film featured just the performance. Two years later, at Maben’s suggestion, the film was recut, now including 20 minutes of documentary footage of the band in the studio recording ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’.. In 2002, a special director’s cut was released which introduced new edits, including footage from the Apollo missions, and heavily edited the setlist included from the performance, including omitting some songs entirely.

The music video for the recently released ‘One Of These Days’ has racked up 300k views on YouTube in four days, and has been noted for its focus on the drumming of Nick Mason. One X user noticed the lack of footage of the rest of the band, which consisted of Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Richard Wright, and Mason. Another Floyd fan responded that the original footage had been lost before the original cut had even been released. Still, the video gives one of rock’s greatest, yet often under-appreciated drummers, his dues.

Despite the various revisions of the order in which the tracks appear in the film, ‘Echoes’ always bookends the film, with the first part always appearing as one of the opening two tracks, and part two as a finale. The accompanying soundtrack album seems to match the original cut’s track listing, meaning ‘Echoes – Part One’ will play after the opener, ‘Pompeii’. It also appears that all of the tracks have gone under a remastering process too, with all album tracks labeled as ‘2025 Mix’ on streaming platforms.

Pink Floyd’s performance in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius remains one of the band’s many iconic moments, and has inspired a range of artists, including Radiohead, Beastie Boys (whose inspiration is evident in the music video for ‘Gratitude’), and even David Gilmour, who returned to the venue in 2018. In Nick Mason’s own words, the film is a “rare and unique document of the band performing live in the period prior to ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’”.

The Milton-Keynes five-piece have been teasing new material for some time now and fans of the band will rejoice at the news that Tesseract will be releasing War of Being 0n 15th September. The group have also just dropped their first single of the new record- accompanied by a video-also called “War Of Being.”

The new album is set to be the band’s most ambitious and conceptual record to date. Tesseract, always a band noted for its intricate musical patterns and originators of the Djent metal style, are continuing their all-immersive, story driven sonic adventures. “War Of Being” is an eleven minute mammoth of a song-the story of which is set in the fictional world of Strangeland. The two protagonist characters ‘ex’ and ‘el’ have crash landed in the world and separated, all while having to face a new foe called ‘Fear’.

For many bands, concept projects can be a hit or miss success but Tesseract are well-versed in the art of telling a compelling story to match their aural capabilities. 2020’s cinematic experience titled, Portals, pushed the band into uncharted waters, as the group filmed themselves performing songs that spanned their entire discography.

Speaking about the new album, bassist Amos Williams said, “War of Being has been all-encompassing for us since late 2019. After I returned home from filming Portals, I found myself in such a deeply introspective headspace. The scale of work and reward from that project kind of set this up to be inevitable. We simply had to try and see how far we could take a concept album with Tesseract.”

Began in 2003 by guitarist Acle Kahney, Tesseract gained world-wide attention with the release of their third studio album Polaris. Since then, the band have been growing from strength to strength, pushing themselves to continue to expand the band’s limits with each release. With a 5 year gap between Sonder and War of Being, Tesseract are ready to pick up where they left off-cementing themselves as one of the most important bands in modern prog-rock.

English experimental rock band Squid have announced a tour of North America, following the release of the single “Undergrowth” yesterday. The track is off the group’s second album, O Monolith, which is scheduled to be released on June 9th on Warp Records.

The tour will see Squid travel to North America for the fourth time following visits in November 2021, March 2022 and September 2022, and will commence in Austin, Texas on February 2nd 2024 and will conclude in Los Angeles, California on March 1st. The tour will be the first time Squid have the chance to showcase live performances of tracks from O Monolith for their American and Canadian fans.

The highly anticipated new album has already been performed live in the UK (see below) and will see a continuation of Squid’s experimentation with a multitude of differing rock genres. Speaking to NME, Ollie Judge, the group’s lead singer and drummer, states that the band have been “leaning a lot more into experimental song structures“, further adding that the album is “quite proggy – for better or worse“.

See O Monolith being performed live below:

Judging from their latest release, “Undergrowth“, “quite proggy” seems quite the understatement. An initial simple drumbeat and bassline is interrupted by a funky guitar section before Judge begins with his abstract lyrics, his vocals seemingly Hugh Cornwell-esque as we get into the chorus. The bassline returns along with the introduction of the brass and keyboards, and then returns the funk-rock of the guitars, and, slightly further on, a Black Midi-esque noise-rock section encapsulates us. All this and we are halfway through the six minute thirty five seconds song.

Watch the music video for “Undergrowth” below:

O Monolith will therefore be an expression of experimentation, blending together post-punk, art-rock, funk-rock and prog-rock to create an immaculate example of artistic brilliance.

Squid were formed in Brighton in 2016, releasing their first EP, Town Centre, in 2019 and their debut album, Bright Green Field, in 2021, the latter of which receiving widespread critical acclaim and reaching number four on the UK Albums Chart. The group consists of Ollie Judge on lead vocals and drums, Louis Borlase and Anton Pearson on both guitar and bass guitar, Arthur Leadbetter on keyboards and strings and Laurie Nankivell on brass.

Pre-order O Monolith now here.

British art-punk band HMLTD get fantastical on their sophomore album The Worm released on the 7th April. The Worm is a concept album, reminiscent of Ween’s The Mollusk (1997), exploring what a medieval England swallowed by a humongous worm would be like.

The band, who have been known in the past to take delight in the absurd, combine glam and prog rock to create a chaotic 40-minute epic. Inside the belly of the worm, England has evolved into a feudal system ruled by “the Devertebrates” – lords who have removed their spines to honour the great beast. Henry Spychalski, the lead singer of the ensemble, transforms himself into the heroic leader of the counter-resistant group called “the Grunters” who attempt to escape from the creature.

The frontman explained: “The Worm here is both a metaphor for capitalist greed, and the embodiment of a whole generation’s anxiety, dread and fear in the face of ever-looming apocalypse and world-ending natural disasters”. A manifesto further explaining the great mythical lore behind the album is also available to purchase alongside a physical copy here.

Music videos for “The End Is Now”, “Wyrmland”, and “The Worm” have brought to life the nightmarish England all directed by Spychalski.

Watch the video for “The End Is Now” below:

HMLTD started off as Happy Meal Ltd. in London in 2015. However, the band didn’t release their debut EP, Hate Music Last Time Delete, until 2018, and their debut album, West of Eden, until 2020. Having signed to the major label Sony in 2017, the band were dropped after inconsolable disagreements between the label and the band on their image and direction. Their first and second albums have been released through the London-based independent label Lucky Number.

Back in 2017, the flamboyant band, who often play with gendered dress codes, came under fire for what some perceived as queer baiting. “We’re trying to challenge toxic masculinity and we’re doing that from the perspective we can do that from, as the human beings we were born into being, which is predominantly straight cis men,” lead singer Henry Spychalski told DIY Magazine. “But I don’t think having that role should exclude or prohibit you from taking on that political perspective and from taking on what is probably the most violent, toxic, cruel force in our society. We’re learning from queer methods and we always try to express that indebtedness”.

The theatrical band is sure to put on a show during their two consecutive dates at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London this May. They will also be taking the stage at End of the Road Festival this summer. For tickets see here.

Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters shared the first snippet of his reworking of ‘Us and Them’ on YouTube this week. This is part of Waters’ project of reworking Pink Floyd’s iconic The Dark Side of the Moon, the band’s best-selling album released 50 years ago on 1st March.

Waters spoke to The Telegraph about embarking on this project, saying, “not enough people recognised what it’s about, what it was I was saying then.” He believes this to be the perfect opportunity to point fans in the right direction, stating in the accompanying caption to the snippet of ‘Us and Them’ that reworking the album would provide a good opportunity to “re-address the political and emotional message of the whole album.”

Waters acknowledged that “it’s not a replacement for the original which, obviously, is irreplaceable.”

He continues, “But it is a way for the seventy nine year old man to look back across the intervening fifty years into the eyes of the twenty nine year old and say, to quote a poem of mine about my Father, “We did our best, we kept his trust, our Dad would have been proud of us”. And also it is a way for me to honor a recording that Nick and Rick and Dave and I have every right to be very proud of.”

Relationships between the ex-band members haven’t always been the best since Waters’ exit in 1985, with Waters anticipating backlash to this rerecording project. He told The Telegraph, “I wrote ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’. Let’s get rid of all this ‘we’ crap! Of course we were a band, there were four of us, we all contributed, but it’s my project and I wrote it. So… blah!”

Waters also revealed to The Telegraph that this project had been “secretly” in the works for months, reworking the entire track list “from scratch” unbeknownst to ex-band members David Gilmour and Nick Mason.

He is reportedly “planning a lavish vinyl release” of the rerecording, with the release date pushed back from March to May as Waters keeps “tinkering with recordings.”

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of ‘The Dark Side of the Moon,’ Pink Floyd have also announced a reissued version, due to be released on 24th March. The reissue will also include a live recording of Pink Floyd’s 1974 Wembley Stadium show.

A book will also become available on 24th March, titled ‘Pink Floyd – The Dark Side of the Moon: 50th Anniversary.‘ The book will include rare and unseen photos taken during tours between 1972 and 1975.

Additionally, harking back to Pink Floyd’s successful stargazing events at the London Planetarium in 1973, fans will also be able to experience ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ stargazing events at planetariums around the world.

London-based prog metal collective Dawnwalker took to Twitter today to announce the release of their new album House of Sand. The collective is led by songwriter Mark Norgate, their music blending heavy rock and metal with an experimental edge. Not a band to repeat themselves, Dawnwalker features a rotating group of musicians to produce something dark, cryptic and atmospheric.

Addressing the mercurial nature of their process, the band said in the press release for the album: “House of Sand marks a significant change away from the post and folk metal influences of Dawnwalker’s last LP Ages for something darker and more difficult to pin down”. Watch the video for the first track off the album, “R.I.P“, below.

Addressing the pastoral album cover, they continued: ”As pictured on Mitchell Nolte’s cover painting, the album is set against a backdrop of idyllic suburbs and the darkness that may be lurking beneath”. References to the darker side of the human psyche and of human nature run throughout the album. Talking about, “Demon of Noontide”, the second song of the album, they say once it is “contracted gradually destroys all in its path”.

Pink Floyd, Radiohead, and Mansun’s 1998 prog opera “Six” are just a few examples of musical touchstones from the British indie and progressive rock canon, yet these influences are combined with a contemporary heavy sensibility to create a distinctive sound all of its own. The band saying, “It might be thought of as something akin to the lovechild of Opeth and Kate Bush”.

Coming in with a run time of 43 minutes, this is their shortest album by a long way, but that doesn’t mean that each of the thirteen songs isn’t packed with the band’s usual flair for inventiveness.

Talking about the sound they wanted for the new album, the band revealed in the statement: “Together with Joe Clayton of No Studio, they wanted to get away from the overproduced sound of modern metal and computer-generated artifice. As such, no click tracks or synthesized instruments were used at all on the album. Instead, an ensemble of eight musicians wielding acoustic guitars, piano, violins and four vocalist performed whole takes live in the room, choosing to make a feature of their imperfections rather than airbrush them away. The end result is Dawnwalker’s darkest but most human and affecting album to date”.

Metal Injection gave the album 8.5 stars saying: “House of Sand is a mesmerizing journey brimming with countryside chaos and literary meditations…There’s a classiness and scholarliness to it all that keeps you coming back for more, allowing the group to sustain their place amongst the top acts in their field”.

Dawnwalker are:
Chris J. Allan – Drums
Matteo Bianciotto – Guitars, Vocals
Dane Cross – Vocals
Mina Jackson – Piano
Robin Melinda Koob – Violin
Mark Norgate – Vocals, Guitars
Roisin O’Toole – Vocals
and featuring Alastair Mitchell as “The Master”

It has been confirmed that British musician Ian McDonald has passed away at the age of 75. McDonald founded the prog-rock band King Crimson and classic rock group Foreigner. The tragic news was confirmed by McDonald’s son via social media; the post stated that McDonald had sadly lost his battle with cancer.

In the post to Ian McDonald’s official fan page on Facebook, the multi-instrumentalist’s son posted the heart-warming statement. “I’m deeply saddened to tell you that my father passed away yesterday from cancer. He was incredibly brave, and never lost his kindness or his sense of humour even when the going was rough.” He continued to pay tribute to his father, “My father was a brilliant, intuitive musician, a gentle soul, and a wonderful dad. He will live on forever through his beautiful music and the love of his fans. Thank you all.” Al Greenwood, Foreigner co-founder, also posted a touching tribute to his bandmate via Facebook.

McDonald was an accomplished musician, predominately a saxophonist he also played the keyboard, flute, vibraphone and guitar. Before he was making waves in the rock scene, McDonald learnt his craft as an army musician, where he also taught himself music theory. Upon his departure from the Army, he joined forces with Judy Dyble, Robert Fripp and Michael Giles to form King Crimson. The group’s debut album, In the Court of the Crimson King, was released on 10th October 1969 via Island Records, and has proved to be highly influential and is regarded as one of the earliest successes within the prog-rock genre.

After leaving King Crimson, McDonald moved to New York City and in 1976 co-founded Foreigner. The group sired a huge catalogue of hits and became one of modern music’s most popular groups, McDonald played the guitar, woodwind instruments and keyboards. The group released their self-titled debut album in 1977, the ten-track album featured three big hits, “Feels Like the First Time” and “Long, Long Way From Home”. The album also featured the single “Cold as Ice”, the track is highly ranked in published lists of greatest songs and is now regarded a key part of the rock genre’s canon.

McDonald left the group after their third studio album Headgames released in 1979 and saw great success as a session musician. McDonald’s musical talents can be heard on “Get it On (Bang a Gong)” by T-Rex. The talented artist continued to lend his talent to further collaborations and produced several albums. In 1999, McDonald released his solo album entitled Drivers Eyes, the album featured King Crimson band member John Wetton and Foreigner frontman Lou Gramm.

Since the news of the musician’s tragic passing, tributes from McDonald’s peers and fans have been pouring in. Among his bandmates, musicians who have also paid their respect include Gary Kemp, Sid Smith and the classic rock group Asia. The tributes posted to social media all tell of McDonald’s incredible influence and hail his immense musical talent.

Infected Rain has released a brand new single, “Fighter”, the single dropped today accompanied by a new music video. The band’s new impassioned single has been released with an equally intense music video. The video depicts themes heard within the single’s lyrical content whilst curating an artistic aesthetic. The group can be seen performing attached to ropes while shots of a boxing match are implanted between Scissorhands singing and preparing for her own fight.

The group took to Twitter to celebrate the release of their new music video.

The new single’s press release has provided the following statement, “Today, INFECTED RAIN follows up with intense second single, “Fighter”! The aggressive new track showcases the most brutal side of the band, bringing out their ruthlessness in full force with a hardcore-influenced tornado of rhythms and provoking lyricism.”

Frontwoman Lena Scissorhands has also provided the following description for “Fighter”, “Inspired by strong women who never give up, Fighter is a reminder of the here and now! Fighter is a reminder of strength and potential. Today right now, all you’ve got is this!”. The singer also speaks on the upcoming album, “While the whole world was in a deep depression, Ecdysis was slowly but surely maturing. The time in isolation away from all our plans and goals, away from loved ones and the stage, brought out something so new and different in us. A new chapter starts with this album, a chapter of raw emotions and complete commitment.”

The new track is the second single to be taken from the upcoming album Ecdysis, the band’s fifth studio album is set to be released on 7th January 2022. The album will be released via Napalm Records, an Austrian independent record label that specialises in all forms of heavy metal and rock music. The label boasts a roster of some of rock’s most popular acts including Andrew W.K, Hoobastank and Alterbridge frontman Myles Kennedy.

The press release provides the following description for the groups eagerly anticipated new release, “Ecdysis successfully demonstrates ultramodern brutality without sacrificing emotion and melody – showcasing a new layer of INFECTED RAIN that longtime followers and new fans alike will embrace.”

In October the forthcoming album’s first single “Postmortem pt 1” was released, the track was also released with a stirring music video. Much like “Fighter”, the album’s first single also contains thought-provoking lyrical content. The single deals with topics of depression and abandonment and take the listener through an emotional journey filled with catchy guitar licks. Both singles provide a musical snapshot into the band’s first full release since 2019 album Endorphin, the new album is produced by long-term collaborator Valentin Voluta.

The prog-rock and heavy metal band hail from Moldova and consists of vocalist Elena “Lena Scissorhands” Catarga, guitarist Vadim “Vidick” Ojog, bassist Vladimir Babici, guitarist Serghei Babici and drummer Eugen Voluta. The quintet was formed in 2008 and have had a long career that includes five studio albums and various electrifying live performances. The film will document the band’s history, feature behind the scenes footage and includes a full live show complete with special effects and exclusive music.
