The Smile took to twitter today to announce a curious looking new video for their song “Pana-vision”. A teasing nine-second clip with the Peaky Blinders actor Cillian Murphy in character as Tommy Shelby, ominously flipping a coin seemingly in the middle of nowhere was posted on their Twitter feed. The coin lands on heads; he sighs and disappears into the shepherd hut behind. What could this all mean? For the more perceptive amongst us, it won’t come as much of a surprise as the song debuted in the season finale of Peaky Blinders back in April, with the song appearing online a few hours before the episode.

Back in February director, Anthony Bryne told NME, “Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood contributed some original stuff. I’m over the moon about all of that. The music has always been really important historically, and I was keen to bring a dramatic score into it. We’re using that much more in this season. It’s a much heavier season so the score is taking things in a very different direction.”

Talking about the music for the show, Murphy said, “You just know when a song is ‘Peaky’. The artists are outsiders. They have resisted the tyranny of the mainstream, shall we say?” Yorke and Greenwood have spent a career running from the mainstream success of the Radiohead song “Creep” and despite playing stadium shows the world over would happily wear the title of outsiders.

The Smile came into fruition over lockdown from Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood’s desire to make music together, and they soon were playing Glastonbury’s Live at Worthy Farm in 2021 with Son’s of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner. The band’s debut album, A Light for Attracting Attention, was released via digital formats on 13th May 2022 and given a physical release on 17th June 2022 via XL Recordings. The track was produced by long-time Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich. Godrich first worked with Yorke and Greenwood on Radiohead’s second album The Bends as an engineer and then becoming co-producer on Ok Computer.

A Light for Attracting Attention received universal acclaim receiving 86 out of 100 on Metacritic and Ryan Dombal of Pitchfork saying that the album is, “unmistakably the best album yet by a Radiohead side project.”

Since their appearance at Worthy Farm, “Pana-Vision” is the fourth single to be released from the band and is the fourth track to be taken from A Light for Attracting Attention. Tyler Golsen of Far Out magazine gave the song 7.2 out of 10 saying, “The new track is the most nebulous track that The Smile have officially released so far.” The song is a definite shift in tone from the opening three tracks and showcases Greenwood’s film composer alter ego.

“Pana-vision” originally appeared on April 3 2022 with an animated video directed by Sabrina Nichols, using imagery by Yorke and Radiohead artist Stanley Donwood.

Thr Smile’s only UK show will be at London’s All Points East, tickets available here.

Anthony Byrne, director of the acclaimed television show Peaky Blinders, has confirmed that Jonny Greenwood and Thom Yorke of Radiohead have written original music for the show’s upcoming sixth (and final) season. The first episode of the new season will air this Sunday (February 27th).

Peaky Blinders has featured a great deal of well-loved music over the years; for example, Nick Cave’s classic track “Red Right Hand” serves as the show’s main theme song, and tunes from IDLES, David Bowie, PJ Harvey, Arctic Monkeys, Iggy Pop, Foals and Royal Blood have also been featured on the soundtrack over previous years.

According to NME, Byrne said: “Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood contributed some original stuff…“I’m over the moon about all of that. The music has always been really important historically, and I was really keen to bring a dramatic score into it. We’re using that much more in this season. It’s a much heavier season so the score is taking things in a very different direction…It’s always about Tommy and his headspace. That’s what I keep going back to.” Byrne has also revealed a few other details of the content of season six’s soundtrack, saying that Sinead O’Connor, Joy Division and Patti Smith will be making an appearance.

Composer Anna Calvi has returned once again to compose the score for the sixth season, and this time she has teamed up with Nick Launay, who frequently collaborates with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds as their producer.

In Yorke and Greenwood’s world, the two have recently established a new band with Sons of Kemet’s Tom Skinner called The Smile. The group recently released their first single entitled “You Will Never Work in Television Again”, and also debuted some new tracks at recent live performances, including three live shows at Magazine London on the 29th and 30th of January, which were performed to a small audience and also livestreamed. The single can be found on all streaming services.

In addition, Radiohead recently released a B-sides album entitled Kid A Mnesia, which compiled songs from the Kid A and Amnesiac era of the band that did not quite make the cut, and some alternate versions of songs, including a piano arrangement of “Spinning Plates” from Amnesiac, and an alternate version of the song “Morning Bell” also from Amnesiac. Kid A Mnesia can be found on all streaming services, and physical copies of the record can be found here.

Murphy’s timeslot, from midnight to 2am, seems especially to establish and welcome companionship for those who don’t or can’t sleep during those hours.

Samantha Moy, the Head of BBC Radio 6 Music, declared that “we consider Cillian part of our family, so it’s a joy to have him back home on 6 Music. His passion for music is inescapable, his story telling sublime and I know he will make Sunday nights very special for 6 Music listeners.” Indeed, for Murphy, this is a return to familiar ground; he has been presenting on 6 Music since 2013. One of his earliest radio appearances was ‘The Sound Of Cinema’, where he played some of his favourite musical moments in cinema, including Ennio Morricone, Alexandre Desplat and The War on Drugs. He presented a one-off, memorable Christmas special in 2018, tracking some of his favourite songs of the year. Following these appearances, he stood in for Guy Garvey with ‘Cillian Murphy’s Music Mixtape’ in 2019, which you might have caught again this year as it was rebroadcast during the early weeks of lockdown.

His collection is usually pretty varied, but there is a strong 1960s influence that always seems to run through his choices. Across all of these radio appearances, he has maintained the same calm vibe with his gentle voice and his chilled taste, all of which points to this new series being perfect for Murphy’s radio persona.

Cillian Murphy is best known and well loved for his role as Tommy Shelby on critically acclaimed tv show Peaky Blinders – in fact some newer fans of the show might be surprised to learn that Murphy is not originally from Birmingham at all, but from County Cork, Ireland. Before his acting career, Murphy was the guitarist for a number of bands, with his brother Páidi, who was still in secondary school at the time. Their music career was poised to take off, but they never signed the contract offered by Acid Jazz Records. During his first term as a law student at University College Cork, Murphy had set his sights on acting, and the rest is history.

In advance of the premiere of ‘Limited Edition’ next Monday, you can catch Murphy on Steve Lamacq’s show on 6 Music, this Thursday, 4-7pm.

Hunter is an apt name for an album so ferocious and primal as this one. Calvi said that she chose the title because she ‘hate[s] the fact that strong words about going into the world and taking what is yours are so male-gendered‘. This hatred is clear from the first track onward. In As a Man Calvi sings over a repetitive bass-line and war-like drums: ‘If I was a man in all but my body// Oh would I now understand you completely’.

It is an exploration of the still pervasive sentiment that Queen Elizabeth expressed when she defended her status as a female leader with the words ‘I know I have the body of a weak and feeble woman; but I have the heart and stomach of a king‘. Calvi said in a press release that: ‘If a woman wants to be powerful she’s expected to exhibit ‘male’ traits… the woman in the song is trying to understand a man by imagining becoming him, but as it progresses she asks the man to become more like her instead’.

She continues, ‘there hasn’t been enough effort for men to become more like women… Men are brought up believing that to be feminine is to be weak… both sexes need to be able to move to the middle of the spectrum’. This measured and interesting idea runs through the album, especially on the track Don’t Beat the Girl out of My Boy.

This song starts with a doo-doo chorus over upbeat guitar. It is a joyful celebration of gender non-binary ideals, a call to society to let the children be. To let boys cry and girls be bossy in the playground. Toward the end of the track Calvi sings ‘I shout out// Let us, be us’ and lets out a Kate-Bush-esque wail for a full 40 seconds. Her passion and pain toward the subject of gender is evident in her cry, and as a result its sound is enough to send shivers down anyones spine.

The album is a political piece of artistry. It remains as relevant now as it was two years ago, if not more so.
