English Pop-Rock Band, The 1975 started the year by announcing their At Their Very Best tour which will take place in the UK for the remaining week. Their latest 2022 album, Being Funny In A Foreign Language will be performed for the first time in Manchester. Their first single “Part Of The Band” was released on July 7, 2022. The second single, “Happiness” was released on August 3, 2022. Their third single, “I’m In Love With You” was released on September 1, 2022, and their fourth single, “All I Needed To Hear” was released on September 21 2022.

The concept of their latest album started during the 2020 lockdown when band’s postponed shows ultimately cancelled in early January 2021. Matt Healy, the lead singer used that opportunity to tease newer music from his band under the previous album name, Drive Like I Do. Unfortunately, the band confirmed that there was no exact day they were going to finish writing, recording and mixing their fifth album.

On February 14 2022, the band had to temporarily deactivate their socials, indicating new material was all set to be released, after a 7 month wait. In terms of musical style, Being Funny In A Foreign Language is a mix of Pop-Rock, Indie Folk, Baroque Pop and Electropop.

English Pop singer, Ellie Goulding makes a comeback following the release of her fifth studio album, Higher Than Heaven which will be released on February 3rd 2023. Her album is preceded by three singles: “Easy Lover”, “All By Myself ” and “Let It Die”. Out of all her three singles, the lead single is “Easy Lover” which was released on July 15 2022. The song features American Rapper, Big Sean who is also one of the co-writers of this lead single.

The concept of her album started around the time she performed at Rock in Rio in Lisbon, Portugal in June 2022. She announced in July, she will release new music and temporarily deactivate her socials, just like The 1975 did. On July 4 2022, she announced the release of “Easy Lover”. 3 months later, following the release of “All By Myself”, on October 7 and “Let It Die” twelve days after the second single. The musical style in Higher Than Heaven is mainly focused on Electropop and Dance-pop elements.

Most of the teasing in the leadup for the album began over a month ago, In true 1975 spirit, June 1st continues to be a bit of an in-joke amongst the fandom. After deriving their name from an inscription in a poetry book that read “1st June, The 1975″, June 1st just seems to be the date where things happen. This time around, the posters started popping up and they also started sharing new images on their socials with the caption “Your new album. Your new era. Your old friends. The 1975”. A handful of other cryptic images and captions later, we come to the present, with the promise of a new album set for release in… October. That’s right, October 14th. You can pre-order the record here. You’ll have forgotten you’d even ordered it by the time the release date actually comes around. Treat yourself. You can watch the video for single 1, “Part of the Band” below.

The 11-track album may come as a warm surprise to some fans as their previous 2 records – A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships and Notes On A Conditional Form – were well received by critics and fans, have been described as a little bloated, and a few too many unnecessary interludes and throw away tracks. Aside from the recurring “The 1975” intro, there’s hardly any space for filler. If the lead single is anything to go by, their now practically trademarked blend of slick and shiny pop-production meets Beach Boys-esque instrumentals has very much been adhered to. You can see the album’s tracklist, as shown on the band’s twitter, below.

As of yet, the band are only scheduled to make 2 appearances in the foreseeable future. This August, both Tokyo and Osaka will be hosting Japan’s own Summer Sonic Festivals. But, that being said, traditional marketing would suggest that they’ll probably announce a few smaller dates, probably around the UK, quite soon. Before embarking on the usual world tour situation… you know the drill. Watch this space.

The ten-second preview- although it is indeed just a preview- feels like somewhat of a departure from the band’s retro-tinged pop sound, featuring a delicate piano and fluttering saxophone lines that almost feel like a score to a coming-of-age film. Healy has also posted lyrics to the song in the caption of the post: “She was part of the airforce, I was part of the band, I always used to bust into her hand, In my imagination, I was living my best life, Living with my parents, Way before the paying penance and verbal propellants.” The forthcoming tune was initially teased last month when posters were put up around London, featuring a black and white photo of Healy. On June 28th, lyrics to the new song began to appear on billboards, pictures of which were shared on Instagram by the record label Dirty Hit.

The group’s last full-length album Notes on a Conditional Form came out in 2020, and since then, a follow-up to the record has been highly anticipated by fans. As far back as last year, members of The 1975 have been alluding to a new album being on the horizon, with Healy saying in a now-deleted Instagram post from last year that he is: “Making another ‘classic record’ smh,”.

Healy has also been teasing new music from his musical project Drive Like I Do, informing fans last year that he has been working on “a little bit of new music” under the moniker.

The 1975 will be returning to live performance in August of this year, with two gigs at Japan’s Summer Sonic festival. This will be somewhat of a post-pandemic milestone for the four-piece, as they have not performed live since their show in Dublin, all the way back in March of 2020. The group are headlining the Summer Sonic bill alongside Post Malone, and are joined by the likes of Carly Rae Jepsen, One OK Rock, The Libertines, Måneskin, Megan Thee Stallion and The Offspring.

After a few weeks of guerilla marketing in the form of mysterious posters and obtuse artwork scattered around the country, beloved (mostly) pop-rock stars The 1975 have confirmed a release date for Part Of The Band, July 7th. I assume we’re being led to believe that this is, in fact, an album drop. But in the later years of the band, their mystery and whimsy seem to be taking centre stage, so until we see it… nothing can be confirmed.

In true 1975 spirit, June 1st continues to be a bit of an in-joke amongst the fandom. After deriving their name from an inscription in a poetry book that read “1st June, The 1975″, June 1st just seems to be the date where things happen. This time around, the posters started popping up and they also started sharing new images on their socials with the caption “Your new album. Your new era. Your old friends. The 1975”. A handful of other cryptic images and captions later, we come to the present. But still, are we just supposed to believe there’s an album coming in less than a month? The link provided by the band just chucks us into a mailing list… what’s the deal guys?

If we want to go even further down the rabbit hole of random, and borderline pointless, speculation then look no farther than an old post on the band’s Instagram account. Prior to taking on the classic “wipe-your-socials-before-releasing-a-new-album” strategy, one of the final things to make it online was a picture with the caption “B F I A F L”. Interesting. It’s clearly an anagram, and as the band are almost famous for their obnoxiously long song and album titles… it’s probably one of them. So, after a bit of searching, we discovered that it wasn’t actually anything we know so far. Interesting. But once the superfans got involved, it was revealed to the collective consciousness that it (probably) stands for ‘Being Funny In A Funny Language’ – which is a song from the Notes On A Conditional Form sessions that never quite saw the light of day. This doesn’t actually mean very much to us… but at least it’s interesting.

Speculation aside, the trend says that we’ll probably end up having information in a week or so anyway. There’s also not long to go before the band’s live return. So far, they’re only set for 2 appearances at Japan’s Summer Sonic Festival and 1 at Mexico’s Festival Corona Capital. But as the old tale goes, a month of guerrilla marketing and album teases always ends up with an album and a few small, intimate shows to make the occasion, then a full-blown tour. Not long now.
