First aired in 1992, Clapton’s Unplugged session remains one of the most famous in the series, alongside Nirvana’s iconic performance. Clapton’s performance was a personal triumph, featuring a poignant rendition of ‘Tears in Heaven,’ written in memory of his son Conor. The performance also reworked Clapton classics such as ‘Layla’ into stripped-back, acclaimed masterpieces.  

The accompanying album, Eric Clapton: Unplugged, became the best-selling live album of all time, with over 26 million copies sold. It won three Grammys, including Album of the Year, and helped solidify the Unplugged series as a cultural touchstone, able to attract the likes of Nirvana, Oasis and Bob Dylan in the years following. Clapton’s performance marked a turning point in his career, paving the way for personal, blues-focused albums like ‘From the Cradle’. It also sparked a shift in his guitar technique, as he began re-embracing fingerstyle playing—a method he described as offering “a beautiful sound” and greater tonal control.  

A statement from the event’s website, claptonunplugged.com, suggests that viewers will see the version that was released in 2013, which included 60 minutes of bonus footage, as well as “unaired interviews”. This will make the ‘Over 30 Years Later’ version the most complete show yet.

Screenings will take place across 13 UK cities, including locations in Scotland and Wales. However, fans in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are currently left out of the release schedule. Tickets range from £14.99 to £27.99, depending on venue and seating, and can be found here.  

Reaction to the announcement has been enthusiastic on social media. One fan on X wrote: “This is an iconic concert. It introduced so many people to the other side of Mr. Clapton. Classic!”

Paramount+, the platform behind this re-release, continues to expand its catalogue of music-focused programming. Recent additions include documentaries on Lollapalooza and Willie Nelson, as well as a show featuring Rush’s Geddy Lee. Though the platform’s music offering is fairly limited, investment in musical shows reveal that they want to go toe-to-toe with the bigger streaming services, such as Disney+, the platform home to documentaries on The Beatles, Elton John and Taylor Swift.

Paramount Co-CEO Chris McCarthy recently affirmed the company’s confidence in its streaming position amid reports of them exploring deals with other streaming giants. With 72 million subscribers, Paramount+ is the fourth largest streaming service in the world.

‘Eric Clapton Unplugged…Over 30 Years Later’ will offer fans a chance to relive one of the most celebrated live performances in music history, and, like it did back in 1992, may introduce a new generation to the man affectionately known as ‘Slowhand’.

Madonna Louise Ciccone, known as Madonna and dubbed the Queen of Pop, is an Italian-American singer, songwriter, dancer, actress and mother. The singer came to the attention of the music world with her self entitled debut album Madonna in 1983 and is known for her earlier popular hit singles “Lucky Star” (1983), “Holiday” (1983), “Material Girl” (1984), “Like A Virgin” (1984) and “Into The Groove” (1984) to name only a few.

The musician has sold over 300 million albums worldwide, has the most UK number-one singles for a female artist and is noted for being the best selling female recording artist of all time in the Guinness Book of Records. The singer’s Madame X tour was an all theatre tour, that ran for 75 dates from September 17th 2019 to March 8th 2020. The tour saw the musician perform in smaller venues for the first time since The Virgin Tour in 1985.

The musician explained during an interview with BBC News that her reasons for opting to perform in smaller venues, were due to her doing so many large scale tours and now wanting to connect directly with her audience. The singer’s tour was unfortunately plagued by an ongoing knee injury which features in the documentary and resulted in cancellations of tour dates to support her recovery. The tour ended three days earlier than planned due to the Covid 19 Pandemic on March 8th 2020. The Madame X documentary was directed by Ricardo Gomes and was filmed in Lisbon (Portugal).

The documentary details the singer’s life on the road during her tour and shows the singers alter ego, Madame X who dons an eye-patch. The musician said of her documentary “There was nothing between me and the crowd, and that was an incredible experience,” “I needed to document that — the process, the rehearsals, the show itself, what was in my mind, what inspires certain songs” The singer’s children feature in the documentary which showcases her performances with 48 dancers and an all-female Orquestra Batukadeiras.

The musician recently forged a partnership with Warner Music Group in August thus following in the footsteps of other musical artists. The partnership encompasses 17 studio albums including the singer’s recent albums “MDNA”, “Rebel Heart” and “Madame X”.

The musician’s Madame X Tour was named the highest-grossing theatre tour of all time and she has had a 40-year relationship with MTV following her early musical career success. The relationship was celebrated in September with this tweet.

The singer’s Madame X documentary in association with Paramount + will be shown tonight, October 8th at 10.00 pm on MTV UK ending the wait for the musician’s followers.
