Yesterday afternoon (August 24) Irish rap trifecta Kneecap took the stage in Saint-Cloud, France at the historical Rock En Seine festival. This comes after months of controversy, including being banned from Hungary and a Coachella performance that resulted in some calling for their US visas to be revoked, along with their places on many major festival lineups.

The group played out their set in full despite pro-Israel, anti Kneecap protests within the crowd. Whistles and flags were amongst the methods used by to shortly disrupt the beginning of the gig. The protesters were identified and removed quickly by security, whilst being serenaded with chants of “free free Palestine” by a crowd largely stood in solidarity with Kneecap’s perspective.

Moglai Bap, a rapper from the band, took the opportunity to speak at length on the matter. He said “They wanna try and stop us. They don’t want us to play the festival. We’re not going to allow them to get away. We’re not like them. We’re not like Israel. We’re not here to cause fights. We’re here to have a good time. If anyone blows whistles, let security know, we’ll get rid of them. No aggravation. It’s all love, all support for Palestine”

However it was the inclusion of Kneecap on the lineup that caused the most conversation. Rock En Seine stood with the group despite calls for them to do the opposite and in doing so the mayor of Saint-Cloud redacted €40,000 worth of funding for the festival.

Robert del Naja – one half of trip-hop icons Massive Attack – has criticised the UK government following the arrest of over 500 people at a demonstration in support of Palestine last Saturday.

According to The Guardian, over half of the 500 protesters arrested in Central London were above 60 years old as thousands gathered in a demonstration organised by campaign group Defend Our Juries. The arrests were made due to the widespread support of Palestine Action – an organisation that has recently been proscribed as a terrorist group in the UK.

Robert del Naja – who has been vocal in his support of Palestine and activism for decades – took to Instagram to share his thoughts on the arrests, claiming: “UK civil liberties are trapped in a deeply cynical, manufactured crisis.”

In a post which he captioned with “This kept being taken down…”, del Naja attacked the UK government aswell as the actions of the police last weekend: “The ultimate truth though is that this is not really about silent, crouched citizens surrounded by packs of 10 burly British police men & women & thrown in caged vans, nor the politicians with the masks of corporate lobbying & genocide complicity torn from their faces.

“It’s about trying to fill with distractions the vast & expanding gulf between the horror of the British public – of more than 2 years of the citizens of Gaza, burning alive in tents, being shot dead in food queues, or dropping dead where they stand from starvation – and the duplicitous, arrogant & cowardly complicity of their government.”

Massive Attack recently joined forces with the likes of Brian Eno, Fontaines DC and Kneecap to create a new alliance aimed at supporting musicians speaking out about Gaza. The trip-hop pioneers spoke to The Guardian about why this alliance is needed, saying: “This is about solidarity with artists being crushed under legal threats – while witnessing genocide unfold in real-time on their screens.”

Del Naja ended his recent Instagram post by calling out the Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, for her role in proscribing Palestine Action, saying: “On Saturday, 521 distressed citizens peacefully & reluctantly wasted police time; because wasting police time is now the official policy of Yvette Cooper; a Home Secretary who views your civil liberties as a useful political device.

“Those 521 people are willing to pay with their liberty for the vindictive shame of those they elected to power. I hope none of us repeat that mistake at future elections.”

Prime Minister Keir Starmer recently spoke out about the wave of young people and artists showing support for Palestine, where he claimed he welcomed the sympathetic attitude towards Palestine, but is against “incitement to violence”.

He told NME: “Kneecap shouldn’t be performing at Glastonbury, and I don’t support inciting to violence as free speech… There’s a huge difference between speaking out about what’s happening in parts of the world. All of us are concerned by what we’re seeing in Gaza.”

Speaking at the same event, Starmer confirmed his support of the proposed £1 ticket levy, which is aimed at supporting the UK grassroots music scene, where he said “venues need not just to survive, but to thrive.” Check out the mxdwn.co.uk coverage of the PM’s interview with NME here.

The line-up for Brian Eno’s benefit show at Wembley Arena has been announced, with the likes of Damon Albarn and Bastille set to perform at the gig aimed at sending “a message of love and solidarity to the people of Palestine”.

‘Together For Palestine’ will take place at Wembley Arena on September 17 with Albarn and Bastille being joined by Greentea Peng, Hot Chip, James Blake, Jamie xx, King Krule, Paloma Faith and many more.

They will also be joined by Palestinian artists Adnan Joubran, Faraj Suleiman and Nai Barghouti, with more names due to be announced at a later date.

Legendary producer Brian Eno has organised the benefit gig, with “every penny donated” going to Palestinian partners through UK charity Choose Love.

Speaking during the announcement of the event in July, Eno said: “I’ve had the good fortune to work with some of the world’s most remarkable artists for over 50 years. But one of my biggest regrets is that during that time so many of us have remained silent about Palestine.

“Often that silence has come from fear, real fear – that speaking out could provoke a backlash, close doors or end a career. But that’s now changing – partly because some artists and activists have lit the path, but mostly because the truth of what’s going on has become impossible to ignore.”

Former Blur frontman Damon Albarn recently spoke with Channel 4 News ahead of the show in support of the Palestinian people. This comes after Albarn was called out by Bob Vylan as an “out of touch 90s musician” after the ‘Parklife’ singer criticised the punk duo’s controversial Glastonbury set.

Albarn said in the interview: “I, like everyone with a heart, have felt despair and helplessness at the reports coming out of Gaza and the West Bank over these last days, months, years.

“A genocide unfolding in real time on our screens. I come from a family of pacifists. I have been taught, and I believe, that pacifism is an action. Peace is an action. To live peacefully requires vision and commitment. To act with humanity towards one another, that too is a decision. Music has taken me around the world, it is the sum of everything I know and trust and believe in – respect, collaboration, shared experience.”

As mentioned earlier, Eno has confirmed that “every penny donated” will go to Palestinian partners through Choose Love, which is a UK charity focused on supporting local humanitarians in conflict zones. However, the gig is about far more than just financial support, according to Eno, as it is all about “sending a message of love and solidarity to the people of Palestine – that they haven’t been forgotten.”

Massive Attack told The Guardian that the new initiative was sparked by the increasing fear artists are facing when expressing pro-Palestine views. “This is about solidarity with artists being crushed under legal threats—while witnessing genocide unfold in real-time on their screens,” the band said.

As the global music scene continues to wrestle with how and when to speak on political issues, Massive Attack and their allies have made their position loud and clear: art is not apolitical, and silence is not an option. The group called out organisations such as the UK Lawyers for Israel (UKLFI) for their “aggressive campaigns”. The UKLFI are the group who were responsible for reporting punk duo, Bob Vylan, to the police after their Glastonbury performance this year. Massive Attack have already received massive support on their recent Instagram post:

In a joint statement posted across social media, the artists say they’ve “watched in horror” as Gaza has become “a slaughterhouse”—and they’re done staying silent. What’s more, they’re calling out what they describe as a rising wave of intimidation within the music industry.

“We write as artists who’ve been threatened into silence or career cancellation,” the statement reads. “We won’t stand by as voices are silenced under the weight of legal threats, cancelled bookings, or police investigations.”

Massive Attack are one of many artists who are speaking out against atrocities in Gaza, risking career opportunities, read more about those speaking out, here.

Police are reviewing both Kneecap and Bob Vylan’s performances at Glastonbury 2025 to assess whether any offences have been committed.

Both artists performed on Saturday afternoon (June 28), playing back-to-back sets on the West Holts stage.

Bob Vylan came on first, with a set that saw frontman Bobby Vylan speak out in solidarity with bands that “use their platform to speak up for the Palestinian people”, mentioning Kneecap, Amyl & The Sniffers and The Murder Capital.

@gbnews Punk band Bob Vylan have sparked uproar after they used their Glastonbury set to leads chants of “Death to the IDF” and “Free, Free Palestine”. The group also expressed solidarity with Irish rap trio Kneecap, who were scheduled to perform 30 minutes after them on the West Holts stage, after it was confirmed the BBC would not be broadcasting their set live. #Glastonbury #BobVylan #Israel #Gaza #BBC #GBNews ♬ original sound – GB News

During their set, the crowd started a chant of “free, free Palestine”. In response, Bobby asked, “Have you heard this one?”, before leading a new chant saying “death, death to the IDF”, in reference to the Israeli Defense Forces, the armed forces of Israel who are currently part of the war in Gaza.

Kneecap’s set saw them take aim at their critics and opposition, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Sharon Osbourne. While onstage, they thanked Glastonbury for keeping them on the bill and told the crowd that the “prime minister of your country, not mine, said he didn’t want us to play”, referring to Starmer.

They also touched on the ongoing war in Gaza, with Mo Chara saying “We understand colonialism and we understand how important it is to support each other internationally.” He then led the crowd into another chant of “free, free Palestine” after accusing Israel of genocide.

Since both politically charged performances, Avon and Somerset Police have said they will be investigating both sets from Bob Vylan and Kneecap. On social media, they posted: “We are aware of the comments made by acts on the West Holts Stage at Glastonbury Festival this afternoon.

“Video evidence will be assessed by officers to determine whether any offences may have been committed that would require a criminal investigation.”

Lisa Nandy, the Culture Secretary, has ordered Tim Davie, the BBC’s director-general, to explain why the performance by Bob Vylan was streamed on iPlayer.
In response to the controversy around Bob Vylan’s onstage comments, a BBC spokesperson has said that their set, which was livestreamed on iPlayer, won’t be available on demand: “Some of the comments made during Bob Vylan’s set were deeply offensive,” they told the Independent.

A government spokesperson has also provided a statement against Vylan’s controversial crowd chant: “We strongly condemn the threatening comments made by Bob Vylan at Glastonbury.

“The Culture Secretary has spoken to the BBC Director General to seek an urgent explanation about what due diligence it carried out ahead of the Bob Vylan performance, and welcomes the decision not to re-broadcast it on BBC iPlayer.”

Massive Attack have threatened legal action against an Israeli influencer and author after being accused of “incitement” for displaying footage of late Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar on a screen during a concert.

The group were performing at Manchester’s Co-op Live arena when Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli troops last year, appeared on screen during a montage featuring other world leaders such as Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.

This lead to Hen Mazzig, an Israeli writer and influencer, taking to social media where he directly called out the trip-hop veterans and accused them of “celebrating” the former Hamas leader.

Mazzig shared an 11-second clip from the live show and captioned it with: “Why is the self proclaimed ‘pro peace’ band @MassiveAttackUK screening footage of Yahya Sinwar during their concert? Sinwar masterminded the slaughter of innocents at a music festival, yet they’re celebrating him at a similar event.

“If you’re booking the UK’s largest arena, you should care a lot more about the message you’re spreading. Encouraging 23,000+ people to sympathise with Hamas is more than irresponsible – it’s incitement.”

As expected Massive Attack did not take this claim lightly and responded within hours, warning Mazzig to delete the post or risk legal action: “@hearnimator must delete the original post & issue an apology or further action will follow.”

The post has since been deleted.

The Bristol band did not stop there though. As a group known for their activism and especially their support for Palestine – they have boycotted performing in Israel since 1999 – Robert Del Naja and co issued a further statement, calling out their critics for “deliberate context removal”.

The statement explained in detail what was intended by the footage being played at their Manchester show, saying: “In the specific case of the film loop that includes reportage of Yahya Sinwar, the entire sequence interplays with scenes from Jean Cocteau’s film Orpheus, creating both a placement and implicit tone of horrified lament; that an individual of power can take people down to hell.”

They continued: “It would be bizarre (and perhaps revealing) that any observer of the live show films would solely home in on the Sinwar/IDF footage and completely overlook all other controversial figures feature in the reportage loops.

“Would ‘x’ observer suggest we sought to glorify Vladimir Putin, who appears in four loops? Or Donald Trump who appears in several? Or J Edgar Hoover? Or indeed the IDF soldiers who feature in the exact same location reportage as the Yahya Sinwar footage cited by various social media accounts?”

Massive Attack are not the first group to be ‘targeted’ for showing their support for Palestine. Irish rap trio Kneecap and their controversies have been extensively talked about since they called for a “Free Palestine” at Coachella.

The Bristol group ended their statement with a message relating to Kneecap’s recent ordeals, saying: “In a highly charged atmosphere, public figures including artists who consistently speak out against Israeli war crimes, apartheid and human rights abuses, and in defence of the Palestinian people are subjected to determined and spurious attempts to discredit us, as a deterrent to us from speaking out.

“These spurious attempts will always fail.”

Even before taking to stage in Manchester, the show was already marred in controversy. The recent sponsoring of the venue by Barclays led to Massive Attack almost cancelling the gig, check out mxdwn coverage of what transpired here.

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has issued a lengthy statement regarding his stance on the Israel-Gaza conflict.

The British rockstar has been criticised and questioned before by fans for his silence on the issue. Yorke was heckled at a solo gig in Melbourne last October, where a crowd member screamed at the singer, “How can you be silent?”. Yorke then invited the heckler up to say his piece, before leaving and then returning to the stage to play the Radiohead hit ‘Karma Police’.

@apnewsentertainment Thom Yorke left a stage mid-show in Melbourne, Australia after challenging a heckler to take his mic over comments on the Israel-Hamas conflict. #thomyorke ♬ original sound – AP Entertainment

In a long post on Instagram, Yorke addressed the Melbourne moment: “Some guy shouting at me from the dark last year when I was picking up a guitar to sing the final song alone in front of 9000 people in Melbourne didn’t really seem like the best moment to discuss the unfolding humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

Afterwards I remained in shock that my supposed silence was somehow being taken as complicity, and I struggled to find an adequate way to respond to this and to carry on with the rest of the shows on the tour.

That silence, my attempt to show respect for all those who are suffering and those who have died, and to not trivialize it in a few words, has allowed other opportunistic groups to use intimidation and defamation to fill in the blanks, and I regret giving them this chance. This has had a heavy toll on my mental health.”

Later in the statement, Yorke criticized Israeli prime minister Benjam Netanyahu and his administration: “I think Netanyahu and his crew of extremists are totally out of control and need to be stopped, and that the international community should put all the pressure it can on them to cease. Their excuse of self-defence has long since worn thin and has been replaced by a transparent desire to take control of Gaza and the West Bank permanently.

I believe this ultra-nationalist administration has hidden itself behind a terrified & grieving people and used them to deflect any criticism, using that fear and grief to further their ultra-nationalist agenda with terrible consequences, as we see now with the horrific blockade of aid to Gaza.”

He also condemned Hamas, similarly calling out the militant movement/terror group for using Gaza’s pain to further their own agenda: “Why did Hamas choose the truly horrific acts of October 7th? The answer seems obvious, and I believe Hamas chooses too to hide behind the suffering of its people, in an equally cynical fashion for their own purposes.”

Radiohead have a long history with Israel – it was the first country to give widespread radio airplay to their debut single ‘Creep’ after it failed to generate buzz anywhere else.

In 2017, the band played a concert in Tel Aviv against the advice of the pro-Palestine BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) movement. After BDS director Ken Loach wrote an op-ed for The Independent pleading for Radiohead to join the boycott, Yorke stood firm in his impartiality to Israel’s conflict: “Playing in a country isn’t the same as endorsing the government.

“We’ve played in Israel for over 20 years through a succession of governments, some more liberal than others. As we have in America. We don’t endorse [Israeli prime minister Benjamin] Netanyahu any more than [Donald] Trump, but we still play in America.”

Recently, Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood has had to cancel UK shows with Israeli-born rock musician Dudu Tassa due to “credible threats” to their safety. You can read more on that here.

Superstruct – the company that own Field Day and many more festivals across Europe – was acquired by KKR for $1.3 billion in June 2024. As the world’s second largest investment firm, KKR has ties to several Israeli corporations that allegedly operate in occupied Palestinian territories.

The letter states: “The consequences of KKR’s complicity in Israel’s genocide in Gaza and apartheid regime against all Palestinians are not only countless violations of human rights and international law, but the systematic destruction of Palestinian life and society.

“KKR invests billions of pounds in companies which, for example, develop Israeli underground data centres, and advertise real estate on illegally occupied land in Israeli settlements in the West Bank.”

Since the acquisition of Superstruct, The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) have led the calls to boycott any festival under the companies umbrella, including Boiler Room.

Now the attention has turned to Field Day, with the open letter demanding that the festival adopts an ethical programming and partnerships policy.

Although the letter states that they understand the difficult position the festival has been put in, the collective of artists have called on Field Day bosses to have an open dialogue with musicians, saying: “While we understand that this acquisition was not the choice of Field Day, it nonetheless means that the festival is now implicated in the crimes against humanity of apartheid and genocide.

“We are open to constructive dialogue with the Field Day team about how to urgently and most effectively achieve these demands, given the challenging position they have been put in.”

Field Day have yet to respond to the demands, but will be expected to tackle it in a similar fashion to how Boiler Room did earlier this year.

After receiving similar criticism, the electronic festival was quick to respond with a statement reaffirming it’s “unapologetically pro-Palestine” stance, saying: “We continue to adhere to BDS [Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement] and PACBI guidelines regarding artist programming and brand partnerships and engage with Palestinian artists and organisers in order to formalise our internal policies in line with this commitment.”

Following Boiler Room’s publicised distancing from KKR, the PACBI called on “all other Superstruct-owned live music events to distance themselves from KKR’s investments in Israel’s complicit tech sector.”

Only time will tell if Field Day accept the demands of the Sisu Crew and PACBI.

This is not the only open letter signed by Massive Attack this week, as the Trip Hop icons joined a growing list of more than 100 names supporting Kneecap’s “freedom of expression”. This follows alleged attempts from politicians and the media to censor the Irish rap trio after the group showed their support for Palestine whilst performing at Coachella.

The UKs biggest metal, alternative and rock and festival Download is experiencing boycotts from a number of artists and acts over one of its sponsors – Barclays Bank. The festival, which is due to take place this weekend beginning on the 14th of June, is in partnership with Barclays Bank which has been identified as investing in companies that supply weapons to Israel.

The Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) states on their website that the company ‘is bankrolling Israel’s genocidal assault on Palestinians.’ According to their research, ‘Barclays bank now holds over £2 billion in shares, and provides £6.1 billion in loans and underwriting, to 9 companies whose weapons, components, and military technology are being used by Israel in its attacks on Palestinians.’ This, along with the mass walkout by over 100 bands and artists over a similar issue with May’s Great Escape festival has encouraged acts due to play at this weekends Download to boycott the event.

It began with the band Pest Control who wrote in a post on their Instagram that they ‘will not take part in an event whose sponsor profits from facilitating a genocide.’ as well as that they refuse to ‘sacrifice the principles held by this band and by the scene we come from and represent, just for personal gain.’

The Leeds band then created a ripple effect causing punk bands Speed, Scowl and Zulu to pull themselves from the event too and instead have organised a benefit show which will take place at the Centrala in Birmingham on the evening of Friday the 14th. Unfortunately, all tickets for this impromptu show sold out in just 6 minutes but if fans are still wanting to donate you can check out the @birminghamhardcoreshows Instagram page for information on how to do so.

London hardcore metal band Ithaca have also decided to snub Download too and this isn’t the only festival getting the cold-shoulder this summer. Latitude is experiencing a similar situation with a number of comedians refusing to perform at the July event including Sophie Duker, Grace Campbell and Alexandra Haddow, along with many other musicians. To keep up to date with the ever-changing situation, you can follow @bandsboycottbarclays who are leading the movement.

These boycotts have come at a time when Barclays Bank has been attracting increasing outrage from pro-palestine protesters as over 20 Barclays Branches have been defaced and covered in red paint in the last two weeks according to the Guardian. The article also notes that ‘in Edinburgh, rocks inscribed with the names of dead Palestinians were thrown at a bank branch.’

The Leicestershire festival Download and Barclays are yet to comment on the exodus or the protests but fans are hopeful that the continuing growth in the number of acts boycotting the event will push the festival to remove Barclays as a sponsor.

Enter Shikari have just completed a monumental UK arena tour, with the last show of their Great Britain leg taking place at the iconic Wembley Arena in London last night (February 17th). Whilst on stage in front of thousands of fans, lead singer Rou Reynolds took the opportunity to express his lament for the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as well as the band’s solidarity with Palestine.

The St Albans based band started their captivating speech by stating: “We cannot just enjoy this moment without acknowledging the fact that there are children being blown to pieces by a government and a country that has been completely lost in nationalistic and religious fervour.”

Continuing to express his support of Palestine, Reynolds said: “with the activists and actionists up and down the country who have been blocking and targeting the Israeli weapons manufacturing factories. Our country is very complicit in this atrocity, and supports those who are targeting the investment banks that are effectively bankrolling genocide. We have been yelling ‘Free Gaza’, ‘Free Palestine’ for 15 years. I just hope to God that there is still a Gaza and a Palestine left when this fucking nightmare ends. So let us be grateful for tonight, we have safety. We have community, we have love, we have human connection. Let us treasure this feeling that we all have tonight.”

The current death toll of Palestinians in Gaza stands at 28,775, with around 1,410 Israelis killed and around 100 Israeli hostages still remaining in Hamas captivity after the October 7 attacks. Israel is currently being urged by many Palestinian supporters not to send ground forces into Rafah on the Egyptian border, where many of the strip’s citizens are now living after areas closer to their homes became engulfed by fighting. Around 1.5million people are living in Rafah, among fears that there are few to no other places for Palestinians to seek refuge. The BBC reported “tens of thousands” gathered in London yesterday for pro-Palestine rallies.

This is not the first time the British rockers have spoken out about the horrors of war and their distaste for modern day worldwide conflicts. Their 2012 song Stalemate depicts this, with lyrics such as “Money is made when bombs are dropping in Afghanistan, and when phosphorous falls in Palestine.” The four-piece also signed an open letter for ceasefire in November of last year, alongside other artists such as Architects and The Last Dinner Party.
