Ozzy Osbourne, a titanic figure in hard rock and popular culture who died last year at the age of 76, was subject to a posthumous celebration and award on Saturday night at The BRIT Awards in Manchester. This had been announced before, but few expected the bells-and-whistles display of affection for the ex-Black Sabbath frontman.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was picked up by Osbourne’s wife and manager, Sharon and daughter Kelly after an introduction by country star Dolly Parton. This was accompanied by a four-minute rendition of ‘No More Tears’, one of many anthems penned by Ozzy in his lifetime and the title track from his 1991 comeback album which heralded his place as one of the all-time legacy giants of rock. Performing the track was ex-Take That singer Robbie Williams with Osbourne’s longtime guitarist Zakk Wylde on guitar. Also featured in the performance were Ozzy’s former bassist Rob Trujillo, now in Metallica, keyboardist Adam Wakeman, son of Ozzy’s friend Rick, and former Alice Cooper, Ted Nugent and replacement Sabbath drummer Tommy Clufetos holding the beat. The performance is reported to have been personally put together by Osbourne’s wife herself.

Sharon Osbourne, speaking from the stage, said in praise of the tributes to Ozzy that “we’re one because everyone in this place loves music, and it brings us all together. Such amazing artists tonight. I mean, everyone’s a winner, everyone.” She added “I wish he was here to accept it himself…I know that Ozzy is looking down on us all right now, and I know what he’s thinking. He hated making speeches”. These sentiments had been echoed earlier by Parton. “What an incredible life to celebrate”, she said. “Ozzy Osbourne dedicated his entire life to music, and his legacy has left a permanent imprint on the fabric of music lovers everywhere”.

Reception, as often happens where the Osbourne family is involved, has been mixed. One audience member held up a keffiyah in protest of Sharon’s support for Israel, inadvertently captured on the broadcasted footage of the manager’s speech. Others deeper in the metal community disliked the choice of singer, with one claiming that “we need a singer to do an Ozzy Osbourne tribute….let’s ignore all the proper incredible rock/metal singers and get Robbie Williams on it…. FFS!” One claimed “no disrespect to Robbie, but I wish YungBlood [sic] was doing the Ozzy tribute.” while others dismissed this too. Another claimed to want Metallica to have delivered the performance, despite the fact that the only member of the band that was present was Trujillo.

Darker speculation was aimed at Kelly Osbourne, with some comments about her weight loss prompting a response from the reality TV star. The godfather of metal’s daughter, herself married to Slipknot’s keyboardist Sid Wilson, said in a statement that “there is a special kind of cruelty in harming someone who is clearly going through something. Kicking me while I’m down, doubting my pain, spreading my struggles as gossip, and turning your back when I need support and love most.”

For his entire career, Ozzy Osbourne was a live-wire entertainer, stealing the limelight with his time fronting Black Sabbath, his solo singing career, and his reality TV insanity. Since the man known as the “Prince of Darkness” passed away last year, the world has felt a deep absence. The BRIT Awards have put a special celebration of his life in place for Saturday’s ceremony, including a Lifetime Achievement Award for his nearly 60 years in the industry, as well as a musical tribute headed up by Robbie Williams.

Born in the West Midlands in 1948, Ozzy founded the band Earth with bassist Geezer Butler, drummer Bill Ward and guitarist Tony Iommi, later renaming it to Black Sabbath in 1969. Sabbath became what is widely considered the first heavy metal band, writing music with dark, satanic themes and an evil sound unlike anything else in the 60s or early 70s. Osbourne’s instantly-recognisable wails and his energetic, hard-partying performances became a calling card of the band as they rose to prominence. After 8 studio albums, millions of records sold and hundreds of concerts, his substance problems had become too much for the three other members and they fired him from the band.

He bounced back from the dismissal by starting a solo career under the guidance of manager Don Arden, and the supervision of his daughter and Ozzy’s then-girlfriend Sharon Arden. 1980’s debut album ‘Blizzard Of Ozz’ was a global smash hit, catapulting Osbourne back to fame. The 80s saw him release 5 solo albums with a star-studded list of musicians behind him, as well as his marriage to Sharon in 1982.

In the 1990s and 2000s, Ozzy and Sharon became far more prolific than ever, but not necessarily through Ozzy’s music. 1996 saw Sharon found their own annual festival, Ozzfest, which boosted their profiles and those of many up-and-coming bands. In 2002, the couple opened the doors to their Beverly Hills home for MTV’s reality TV sensation “The Osbournes”, offering a chaotic insight into the family lives of Ozzy, Sharon, and two of their children – Jack and Kelly. Ozzy’s exploits made him an idol to many due to a mix of his charisma, alcoholic antics, and his unusual demeanour from decades of drug abuse and the onset of then-undiagnosed Parkinson’s disease.

Osbourne continued to release new music and tour into the 2020’s, until his worsening health from Parkinson’s had made it too difficult. In 2025, he reunited with the full Sabbath lineup of Iommi, Butler and Ward, performing a spectacular farewell concert at Villa Park in his home city of Birmingham. Named “Back To The Beginning”, the event saw many of the biggest names in rock and metal make cameos before Ozzy performed a set of his solo music, and finally his last ever Black Sabbath concert. Unable to walk, he was seated on a throne, watched by thousands in the stadium and millions online. Just weeks after Back To The Beginning, Ozzy Osbourne sadly died at home on the 22nd of July 2025.

In the wake of his passing, he was mourned as true rock royalty. Naturally, the BRIT Awards, the UK’s biggest music award ceremony, could not turn a blind eye to such a major event in British history. They announced today that they will be bestowing Ozzy, who presented the 2008 ceremony alongside his family, with a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award. The statement on their website reads “The BRIT Awards 2026 with Mastercard today announces that global rock icon Ozzy Osbourne, the celebrated founding member and frontman of Black Sabbath and pioneering ‘godfather’ of British heavy metal, will be honoured at this year’s ceremony on Saturday 28th February with a BRITs Lifetime Achievement award, in recognition and celebration of his inimitable impact and influence on music worldwide.”

In addition, a special performance of his 1991 solo single ‘No More Tears’ will be played by a supergroup of Ozzy’s former collaborators and one very special fan. Pop megastar Robbie Williams has credited Osbourne as a personal hero and a dear friend, and will sing the track live. The rest of the band consists of artists who played in Ozzy’s groups in the past – guitarist Zakk Wylde, who co-wrote the song while in Ozzy’s band; Metallica bassist Rob Trujillo; keyboard player and son of Yes’s Rick Wakeman, Adam Wakeman; and drummer Tommy Clufetos. The collective were hand-chosen by Sharon as some of the best musicians to participate in her husband’s endeavours.

The 46th edition of the BRIT Awards will be held this Saturday, the 28th of February, at Manchester’s Co-op Live arena, with further performances from acts including Harry Styles, Olivia Dean, and Raye. Comedian Jack Whitehall will be hosting it from 8PM on ITV, on-demand service ITVX, and the BRITs official Youtube channel.

Ozzy Osbourne’s long-gestating biopic has taken a major step forward, with his family confirming they have settled on what they describe as a “phenomenal” actor to play the late metal icon. The chosen performer’s identity remains a mystery, but the Osbournes say the role is now effectively cast as the film moves into its next phase of development.

The update comes from Ozzy’s son Jack Osbourne, who recently discussed the project while appearing on SiriusXM with longtime family friend and musician Billy Morrison. Jack explained that, after years of development, the family and studio have agreed on their preferred choice to portray Ozzy on screen, although no official announcement has been made. He emphasised that the actor selected is, in his words, “phenomenal,” signalling strong confidence in the eventual lead performance.

The biopic is designed as a deeply personal project, developed by Osbourne Media in partnership with Sony Pictures and Polygram Entertainment. Rather than a cradle‑to‑grave rock chronicle, the film will centre on the relationship between Ozzy and his wife and manager Sharon Osbourne, tracing their life together through some of the most turbulent and creatively explosive years of his career. Screenwriter Lee Hall, known for his work on the Elton John film Rocketman, is attached to the script.

Plans for an Ozzy biopic have been circulating for more than a decade, with the project officially announced in 2021 before entering a prolonged development period. In 2024, the Osbourne family used their revived podcast to share candid updates, joking about how long the film was taking and reflecting on what it would mean to see Ozzy’s story told on screen. Despite Ozzy’s death in 2025, the family and producers confirmed that the film would move ahead, framing it as a tribute to both his musical legacy and his partnership with Sharon.

With a “phenomenal” lead chosen and a director attached, the production is now in an intensive rewrite phase as the creative team refines the script around the casting and the emotional core of the story. Sony and its partners have indicated that securing the right filmmaker and star was essential before locking in a schedule, so this casting breakthrough marks a turning point for the long‑awaited project. For fans, the unanswered question now is not whether Ozzy’s life will hit the big screen, but which actor has been entrusted with embodying one of heavy metal’s most enduring and unpredictable figures.

Industry watchers now view the biopic as one of the most intriguing music‑film projects on the horizon, thanks to its combination of studio backing, family involvement and a still‑secret but strongly endorsed lead. Until the casting is officially unveiled, speculation around who will step into Ozzy’s boots is likely to intensify.

Fans are continuing to call for Birmingahm Airport to be renamed after the late Ozzy Osbourne, even though the CEO has ruled this out. Fans have signed a petiti0n put forward on Change.org, which suggested that Birmingham International Airport have a rebrand in honour of Ozzy Osbourne.

The description read, “Ozzy Osbourne was the most important musician ever to hail from Birmingham. Ozzy’s influence on music and culture is undeniable. Naming our international airport after him would be a fitting tribute to his extraordinary career and contributions to the arts.”

The petition is now on nearly 80,000 signatures, and has even drawn support from the Osbourne family.

However, CEO Nick Barton has said that keeping the current name would be “incredibly valuable for development”.

He told BBC Radio WM that, “Birmingham, amazingly, has an extraordinary list of fantastically influential people, going from historic people like Charles Darwin, as well as Robert Plant and Sir Lenny Henry but the answer is no.”

“The airport name is so important for our future development of what we’ve got, which is a fantastic airport, but yet to grow significantly, which we will do on the back of its name”

He added that there is progress being made on other projects to honour Ozzy’s legacy at the airport saying that, “It’ll be like a mural recognition of Ozzy and other greats in the area.”

Kelly Osbourne said that renaming the site after her father would be an “incredible tribute to him and the legacy that he has left behind”.

Supporters of the idea have pointed out the airports in other cities around the world have also been named after famous figures, such as John Lennon Airport in Liverpool and George Best International Airport in Belfast.

The Osbourne family have recently spoken publicly about Ozzy’s death, revealing he had been hospitalised two weeks before the ‘Back To The Beginning’ concert. They said that they “were just terrified that people were going to find out.”

Ozzy Osbourne’s death came 17 days after he played his final ever live show.

When speaking about his hometown while accepting his Birmingahm Lord Mayor’s Award, Kelly said that the thing her father was “most proud of is that he was a Brummie, and Birmingham has done him proud.” Ozzy Osbourne was honoured this award on what would have been his 77th birthday on Wednesday.

Judas Priest have unveiled a new version of Black Sabbath’s legendary track ‘War Pigs’, this time featuring a duet between frontman Rob Halford and Ozzy Osbourne. All proceeds from the single will go to Cure Parkinson’s and the Glenn Tipton Parkinson’s Foundation, raising funds and awareness for a cause close to the band’s heart.

For decades, ‘War Pigs’ has been an integral part of Judas Priest’s live shows, often serving as their walk-out song before they hit the stage. Its dark, anti-war message and thunderous riffs set the tone for the band’s high-octane performances, making the song a fitting anthem for their legacy in heavy metal. Now, rather than just using it as their dramatic introduction, Priest have recorded their own definitive version- made even more powerful with the voice of the man who first brought it to the world.

The collaboration carries special weight due to guitarist Glenn Tipton’s ongoing battle with Parkinson’s disease. Tipton revealed his diagnosis in 2018, stepping back from touring but continuing to contribute in the studio. His guitar work features on this recording, symbolising his unbreakable bond with the band and his determination to keep creating music despite health challenges.

The project resonated deeply with Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, who both supported turning the track into a charity release. A press statement describes the single as a “monumental collaboration honouring the heavy metal icons Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath,” uniting two of the genre’s most influential forces.

Frontman Rob Halford has spoken passionately about the experience of trading lines with Ozzy on the track, calling it a career milestone: “What is cool and what is kind of waiting in the wings is Ozzy singing with me, doing ‘War Pigs’ together. We’ve been able to do that, it’s there – we’re just going through the rigamarole of legal clearance.”

He continued: “Ozzy’s singing a line and then I’m singing a line, and Ozzy’s singing a line and I’m singing a line. It’s the first ever time in my entire life that I’ve been able to do a duet with Ozzy, and I’m so eternally grateful and blessed that I was able to do that.”

The track can now be downloaded on all major streaming platforms and can be accessed via the link here.

“The best part about this release is that we can take such a monumental moment, immortalise it on tape, release it and donate all the money to such important causes in Cure Parkinson’s, Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Acorns Children’s Hospice.

Thousands of fans gathered in Birmingham on Tuesday, July 30, to pay their final respects to Ozzy Osbourne, the legendary frontman of Black Sabbath, during a public funeral procession through his home city. The procession took place eight days after Osbourne’s death, and brought together a wave of mourning fans, friends, and family members for a historic farewell.

The hearse carrying Osbourne’s coffin departed from Aston, the area where he was born and passed his childhood home. The hearse then passed then Villa Park – where Osbourne performed his farewell concert just weeks earlier during Black Sabbath’s final ‘Back To The Beginning’ show.

From there, the cortege continued along Broad street, crossed the ‘Black Sabbath Bridge’ and made its way through central Birmingham en route to a private funeral service held later in the afternoon. The route was lined with fans waving banners, holding photographs, and chanting lyrics from Black Sabbath’s iconic discography.

The public procession was accompanied by a brass band of local musicians, Boston Brass, who performed instrumental renditions of Osbourne’s best-known tracks, including ‘Iron Man’, ‘Paranoid’, and ‘Crazy Train’. Many fans in the crowd joined in, creating a powerful atmosphere of grief and celebration.

During the procession, the Osbourne family paused at ‘Black Sabbath Bridge’ the renamed section of the city that commemorates the band’s contribution to global music history. Sharon Osbourne, Ozzy’s wife of more than 40 years, was seen visibly emotional, wearing her husband’s wedding ring on a chain around her neck. She was accompanied by their children Jack, Kelly, and Aimee, each of whom laid flowers at the growing fan memorial and took time to read handwritten notes from supporters around the world.

The city of Birmingham has been transformed into a living tribute to the singer in recent days. New murals honouring Osbourne have appeared in areas such as Granville Street, Navigation Street and Digbeth. A new street sign on Broad Street reads simply: ‘Forever Ozzy. Birmingham will always love you’.

In attendance was Councillor Zafar Iqbal, who spoke to The Independent about the procession. “It was very emotional and a great turnout, with thousands of fans lining the streets,” he said. “I think we should be a really proud city. I’m proud that we delivered one of the best send-offs I have seen in my time.”

He added: “The funeral procession was well organised, we looked after all the fans and I think it was a fitting tribute to a legend who was a Brummie through and through, he added. “Like his final gig, he came back home and we were proud to have him. I have been here since 7am talking to fans and the emotions were really high, people just loved Ozzy and you could really feel that when you were there.”

Ozzy Osbourne has announced the release of a new memoir, ‘Last Rites’, which will delve into the rock icon’s recent struggle with health issues as well as reflections on his career and personal life. The announcement comes following his triumphant final performance in Birmingham earlier this month as part of Black Sabbath’s farewell concert.

The book, set for release on October 7 via Grand Central Publishing/ Hachette Book Group, promises to be a raw account of the rock legends life. It focuses heavily on the serious health issues Osbourne has battled over the past decade. These include spinal injuries and multiple surgeries stemming from a 2003 ATV accident and his 2020 diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease- challenges that led to his decision to retire from touring.

Beyond his health, ‘Last Rites’ will explore key moments and relationships across Osbourne’s life and career, from his marriage to Sharon Osbourne to behind-the-scenes preparations for ‘Back to the Beginning’ farewell concert. The memoir will also recount his friendships and encounters with fellow rock icons, including Slash, Bon Scott, Keith Moon, and a poignant chapter on his final moments with Motörhead’s Lemmy Kilmister before his passing in 2015.

In a recent press statement about the memoir, Osbourne said: “People say to me, if you could do it all again, knowing what you know now, would you change anything? I’m like, fuck no. If I’d been clean and sober, I wouldn’t be Ozzy. If I’d done normal, sensible things, I wouldn’t be Ozzy. Look, if it ends tomorrow, I can’t complain. I’ve been all around the world. Seen a lot of things. I’ve done good… and I’ve done bad. But right now, I’m not ready to go anywhere.”

According to a release from publisher Grand Central Publishing/Hachette Book Group the book, is the “shocking, bitterly hilarious, never-before-told story of Osbourne’s descent into hell”. The release added that the memoir is “unflinching, brutally honest, but surprisingly life-affirming”.

This will be Osbourne’s second memoir, following the critically acclaimed ‘I Am Ozzy’ (2009) which became a Sunday Times bestseller. The new release is expected to offer a deeper and darker, but ultimately hopeful, look at The Prince of Darkness – one of rock’s most enduring and complex figures.

Ozzy Osbourne’s announcement follows his emotional final appearance at the ‘Back to the Beginning’ farewell concert in Birmingham, where Black Sabbath performed alongside acts including Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Smashing Pumpkins, and Rage Against the Machine.

Black Sabbath, pioneers of heavy metal, brought their journey as a band to a close with their farewell concert ‘Back To The Beginning’ yesterday, 5 July. Held in their hometown of Birmingham, the concert marked the end of over five decades of genre-defining music. The final performance took place at Villa Park Stadium, packed with 40,000 fans, with 5.8 million live-streaming the event, and a host of rock icons.

The farewell concert featured the band’s classic line-up: Bill Ward, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and frontman Ozzy Osbourne, who led the band through a setlist of their most iconic tracks. This concert marked the first time the quartet had performed together since 2005. Although Black Sabbath had hosted several ‘final shows’ before, in 1992, 1999 and 2017, due to the progression of Osbourne’s Parkinson’s disease, it is likely that ‘Back To The Beginning’ will truly be the last time the original Black Sabbath line-up perform together.

Osbourne hadn’t played a full show since 2018 before last night, due to undergoing multiple surgeries and health complications. In preparation for the show, Ozzy Osbourne had ‘heavy training’. In an interview with Loudwire, Osbourne said: “I haven’t done anything for, jeez, it’s gonna be seven years,” Ozzy explained. “I’ve been through all these surgeries. It really is like starting from scratch.”

The city of Birmingham has embraced the band’s homecoming with pride and anticipation, dubbing this summer the ‘Summer Of Sabbath’. Birmingham City Council awarded the band members the Freedom of the City Award, an honour given to highly respected members of the community. As well as this, there’s a 120ft Black Sabbath mural being painted on Navigation Street, an Ozzy Osbourne exhibition at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, and a ballet set to Black Sabbath’s music, which will run from 18-27 September.

Ozzy Osbourne was seated in a bat-themed throne during his performances, having recently lost his ability to walk. He performed his songs ‘I Don’t Know’, ‘Mr. Crowley’, ‘Suicide Solution’, ‘Mama, I’m Coming Home’ and ‘Crazy Train’ to a roaring reception.

The 11-hour concert was packed with massive names in rock and heavy metal, including Halestorm, Metallica, Alice In Chains, Guns N’ Roses, as well as members of Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Rolling Stones and many more. The event was hosted by Aquaman actor Jason Momoa, and featured a special performance by Jack Black singing his rendition of Ozzy’s song ‘Mr. Crowley’. Many of the bands featured covered Black Sabbath’s songs, such as Tool sharing their rendition of ‘Hand Of Doom’, and Metallica taking on ‘Hole In The Sky’ and ‘Johnny Blade’. Guns N’ Roses also performed their song ‘It’s Alright’, the first time they’d done so since 1992.

Black Sabbath closed the show, with their classic hits ‘War Pigs’, ‘N.I.B.’, ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Paranoid’. The day ended with cake for Ozzy, and fireworks lighting up the stadium. Osbourne closed the show by saying “It’s the last song ever. Your support has enabled us to live an amazing lifestyle… thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

Overall, the concert raised £140 million for charity, and the proceeds will be shared equally between Acorns Children’s Hospice, Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and Cure Parkinson’s.
