The venue’s ownership has been allegedly attempting to evict the site, eliciting strong criticism and shows of support from the around the UK music scene.

In March of last year, The Leadmill announced via their website that the landlords of the venue were trying to close them down by serving an eviction notice. Since then, artists throughout the UK, members of the local community and even Labour MPs have voiced their alarm and displeasure at the news.

Although the current owners The Electric Group have stated that they do not intend to close the venue down, management has claimed that they are, indeed, being forced out and that the venue’s future is in serious doubt. In response, The Leadmill has staged a rally to take place next week (18 September) called the Battle For The Soul Of Sheffield and the BBC have uncovered that the music spot has offered £40 vouchers for people who attend and post about it on social media.

The BBC has learned those running the Leadmill in Sheffield are proposing to pay people to demonstrate against the owners of the building “Electric Group” getting a licence. They’ve teamed up with a promotions company ahead of the council’s licensing hearing later this month. pic.twitter.com/WSkS8Zaox2 — BBC Radio Sheffield (@BBCSheffield) September 8, 2023

BBC News was in touch with the venue for a comment with management commenting, “we don’t know how many people will turn up and as The Leadmill staff will likely be in the hearing itself, we have teamed up with Gosh to ensure the rally is professionally and safely managed by some of their team outside. Gosh are a company that we use regularly and we have a strong relationship with. They are obviously being paid for their time to do so.”

The Electric Group have pointed to what they label a contemptuous move to curry undue support for a cause that they claim is very far from reality. Responding to the rally, The Electric Group CEO Dominic Madden said, “paying people £40 to stand outside of the hall is a move that reeks of cynicism, as it attempts to manipulate the licensing process and unduly influence Sheffield Council.

We’ve consistently maintained that we will invest in the Leadmill to ensure it remains an inclusive, vibrant music and arts venue of which Sheffield can be rightly proud for years to come.”

Very interesting, so Leadmill operators lease ends next year, they’ve been given standard notice, the owners have not yet commented on plans but are likely to refub & run themselves as a music venue, so “The Leadmill” may not be closing but under new day to day management…?

Madden also highlighted that the group has a genuine interest in the venue’s future and that exploiting a legal loophole, as The Leadmill management have claimed, is very far from the truth. Madden has stated that the lease is approaching its natural conclusion and that attempts to purchase the freehold were ignored by current operator Phil Mills.

Artists from the local Sheffield scene have, in the past, voiced support for The Leadmill. Oli Sykes of Bring Me The Horizon, Jarvis Cocker of Pulp and The Arctic Monkeys have all shared their feelings and have helped raise funds and awareness for the venue.

Fans of the Sheffield based band were eagerly awaiting the next few weeks, before beloved metalcore band Bring Me The Horizon’s next effort in the Post Human chapter was set to be released. Now, frontman Oli Sykes has had to dash expectations as he announced via social media that the band have had to postpone the release until sometime in the near future.

Sykes cited that the band has had to push back the release due to the album not quite achieving the lofty standards the band have for it, due to unforeseen circumstances. The singer acknowledged his fanbase’s patience over the setbacks the record has had and has promised them that the album will be released some time very soon.

The news will undoubtedly come as a disappointing surprise to Bring Me The Horizon’s legion of fans, but they will also indubitably take heart that the delay is only temporary and many will be pleased to hear that the band is unwilling to comprise on their music-only deciding to release the album when they are satisfied it is of the most perfect quality.

The disappointment will certainly be felt by the band as well, with Bring Me The Horizon enjoying a huge amount of success over the course of the year-the band’s relentless efforts culminating in a triumphantly successful headlining slot at this summer’s Download Festival, where the group began intensifying the marketing campaign for the new album.

Set to be the second instalment of four in the planned Post Human series, Bring Me The Horizon have already released two singles from the upcoming album, “Lost” and “Amen,” featuring guest spots by hip hop artist, Lil Uzi Vert and Daryl Palumbo of Glassjaw.
Sykes has often expressed his excitement over the new material, saying recently, “we’re definitely tapping into bands like The Dillinger Escape Plan and Glassjaw. There is not that much difference between a metalcore song and when you get into that world of like post-hardcore and stuff, but its more about the freeness and the kind of frantic energy of it, which was really fun to tap back into, because I always feel like even when we’re heavy, we’ve become quite a polished band. And it was very fun to kind of just throw all that out and just be, like, rough and ready again.”
Fans will be hoping Post Human: Nex Gen is not delayed too long but in the meantime, the band has released the finished version of the album’s cover art-shared by the band on social media accounts.

As if headlining a massively successful, career defining set at Download Festival was not enough for the summer, Bring Me The Horizon have added two huge collaborations to their explosive, creative year. The UK rockers have featured on tracks from Lil Uzi Vert and Corpse.

Oli Sykes and co are enjoying what could arguably be the most prolific and successful year of their lives so far. Releasing two massive hit singles in “Lost” and “Amen”, the band also headlined the Download main stage on the festival’s second night-a performance that solidified the band as one of the most important rock acts in the scene today, silencing any remaining doubters they may have.

Shortly after, the band announced their new album, Post Human: Nex Gen, slated for a September release. But Bring Me the Horizon are not ready to rest on their laurels just yet and are aiming to keep the momentum up amongst the lofty heights the group have been elevated to over the past year. In quick succession, Bring Me the Horizon have announced collaborations on hip hop artist Lil Uzi Vert’s new album Pink Tape, appearing on song “Werewolf” and Corpse’s new single “Code Mistake”.

A collaboration with Lil Uzi Vert may not have come as a surprise to many fans of the Sheffield five-piece- after the Philadelphia based rapper appeared on Bring Me the Horizon’s newest single “Amen”-but the rocking, very Bring Me the Horizon-esque “Werewolf” will make Lil Uzi Vert fans imagine that the hip hop artist definitely has a heavy metal side and one he is loving exploring.

@CORPSE https://t.co/6zK23RdBqg pic.twitter.com/pKY2sKDJwx — Bring Me The Horizon (@bmthofficial) June 30, 2023

Just last week, Bring Me the Horizon further stunned fans when American Youtube personality and musician Corpse Husband (simply stylised Corpse musically) dropped a single of his own, featuring the band. “Code Mistake” represents a collaboration that may have been in the works for quite a while now, with the Youtuber saying back in 2021, “what if I did a song with Bring Me the Horizon? That’d be crazy. That would be fucking wild right?” It appears crazier things are possible, as a Bring Me the Horizon/Corpse collaboration is now a reality.

There really is no telling where Bring Me the Horizon will pop up (unexpectedly) next but the fact that the purveyors of some of the most heavy music in recent years are featuring on such eclectic artist’s work is a notable sign of a significant sea change in the metal scene. Long a style of music that never quite emerged from the depths of the underground, acts like Bring Me the Horizon, Architects and Sleep Token have proven that there is a very healthy appetite for the more extreme tastes of the music palette.

Bring Me The Horizon frontman Oli Sykes has collaborated with experimental Russian audio-visual group, IC3PEAK, on their latest track “VAMPIR” (IC3PEAK’s first release this year). The track was released earlier this week and has been described by NME as showing “vocalist Nastya Kreslina and Oli Sykes singing in both Russian and English over glitching synths“.

However, Sykes’ collaboration with the duo (made up of singer Nastya Kreslina and producer Nikolay Kostylev) is hardly a surprise, what with all the collaborations he’s been making in the past year. Other examples include emo-pop artist Daine, with whom Sykes made the track “Salt”, and American DJ trio Cheat Codes, with whom Sykes made the track “Dummy”.

Sykes seems to be finding his niche by working with like-minded artists, with Daine having this to say on the collaboration: “I feel like me and Oli have a similar vision for the way we see emo music evolving. We’re both experimental and progressive in our music. Even with people saying, ‘this isn’t heavy’ or ‘this is pop garbage’, we both have a clear vision of where to go.“

Despite all of this work, Sykes still managed to give fellow artist Tom Morello a helping hand on his album The Atlas Underground Fire, with his own outfit Bring Me The Horizon contributing to the track “Let’s Get the Party Started“. Tom Morello said of their help that “I think that Bring Me The Horizon are just one of the great bands of here and now. I know that they work in a lot of different worlds, but on this album with so much diversity I love the fact I have a collaborator to represent unapologetic metal. Oli Sykes isn’t afraid to scream his lungs out, and the rest of the band aren’t afraid to embrace a powerdriving riff to create a mosh that’s off-the-scale silly.“

It’s a marvel that the band manage to find time for all of this, especially considering that at one point they even intended on releasing four records within a 12 month period (something that keyboardist Jordan Fish now refers to as “absolute fantasy”). However, at the moment we’ll have to make do with the release of their upcoming EP, which Jordan Fish describes as “more influenced by emo and screamo“ than their previous release, Post Human: Survival Horror.

As they work on this wealth of material, it seems to be paying off, with the band having been announced earlier this week as headliners in next years’ Reading & Leeds festivals, one of the most prestigious festivals in Britain (you can read more about this here). For those interested, tickets went on sale yesterday, details of which can be found here.

Oli Sykes, frontman and singer of Bring Me The Horizon, has been leading the metal and rock world since 2006’s This Is What The Edge Of Your Seat Was Made For. Captivating the death-cores fan base with further albums Count Your Blessing (2006) and Suicide Season (2008). In the process of changing the music world for way over 10 years, Oli Sykes has led a creative revolution in both styles, through his clothing line Drop Dead, and performance at venues like the O2, Download’s main stage, and Reading and Leeds festival. Leading the way for bands like Architects, While She Sleeps, and Yung Blud, who have all drawn inspiration from Bring Me The Horizon’s brilliantly creative take on metal-core. Oli Sykes is lending his hand to growing artists as he explores his signature sound in different genres.

PoorStacy released the second album Party At The Cemetery, which sees him explore the emo-rap genre through its 14 track run time. After last year’s The Breakfast Club, the hype for his return. The album includes the single “Public Enemy”, “Children Of The Dark”, and the title track “Party At The Graveyard”. The album features tracks “Knife Party” featuring Oli Sykes of Bring Me The Horizon on its blistering soundscape. Sykes featured recently on Tom Morello’s “Let’s Get The Party Started”, Daine’s “Salt”, and Olivia O’Brien’s “No More Friends”. He is stretching out his unique sound into other territories. Exploring the realms of pop, metal, and even rap.
