The hearse carrying Osbourne’s coffin departed from Aston, the area where he was born and passed his childhood home. The hearse then passed then Villa Park – where Osbourne performed his farewell concert just weeks earlier during Black Sabbath’s final ‘Back To The Beginning’ show.

From there, the cortege continued along Broad street, crossed the ‘Black Sabbath Bridge’ and made its way through central Birmingham en route to a private funeral service held later in the afternoon. The route was lined with fans waving banners, holding photographs, and chanting lyrics from Black Sabbath’s iconic discography.

The public procession was accompanied by a brass band of local musicians, Boston Brass, who performed instrumental renditions of Osbourne’s best-known tracks, including ‘Iron Man’, ‘Paranoid’, and ‘Crazy Train’. Many fans in the crowd joined in, creating a powerful atmosphere of grief and celebration.

During the procession, the Osbourne family paused at ‘Black Sabbath Bridge’ the renamed section of the city that commemorates the band’s contribution to global music history. Sharon Osbourne, Ozzy’s wife of more than 40 years, was seen visibly emotional, wearing her husband’s wedding ring on a chain around her neck. She was accompanied by their children Jack, Kelly, and Aimee, each of whom laid flowers at the growing fan memorial and took time to read handwritten notes from supporters around the world.

The city of Birmingham has been transformed into a living tribute to the singer in recent days. New murals honouring Osbourne have appeared in areas such as Granville Street, Navigation Street and Digbeth. A new street sign on Broad Street reads simply: ‘Forever Ozzy. Birmingham will always love you’.

In attendance was Councillor Zafar Iqbal, who spoke to The Independent about the procession. “It was very emotional and a great turnout, with thousands of fans lining the streets,” he said. “I think we should be a really proud city. I’m proud that we delivered one of the best send-offs I have seen in my time.”

He added: “The funeral procession was well organised, we looked after all the fans and I think it was a fitting tribute to a legend who was a Brummie through and through, he added. “Like his final gig, he came back home and we were proud to have him. I have been here since 7am talking to fans and the emotions were really high, people just loved Ozzy and you could really feel that when you were there.”

Osbourne’s death on July 22 followed years of ongoing health issues, including spinal damage, surgeries, and his public battle with Parkinson’s disease. His final public appearance took place on July 5, when he performed one last time at the ‘Back To The Beginning’ concert – an emotional send-off to fans and his musical legacy.

Born in Inglewood, California, in 1942, Wilson founded The Beach Boys alongside his younger brothers Carl and Dennis, cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. The band would go on to become one of the most influential acts in American music history, selling over 100 million records worldwide with iconic hits like ‘Good Vibrations’, ‘Kokomo’, and ‘God Only Knows’.

As the band’s primary creative force, Wilson helped shape the group’s distinctive sound, blending sonic harmonies with experimental studio techniques. The critically acclaimed 1966 album ‘Pet Sounds’, widely regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time, was written and produced almost entirely by Wilson.

Wilson’s life, however, was marked by personal struggles. He battled mental health issues from an early age, which were intensified by substance use during the height of his fame. Diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and mild manic depression, Wilson spent time in psychiatric hospitals throughout the late 1960s. His condition contributed to the shelving of ‘Smile’, the intended follow-up to ‘Pet Sounds’, and led to greater involvement from other band members in the creative process.

In 1988, Wilson released his debut solo album and went on to enjoy a solo career, touring and releasing new music. He reunited with The Beach Boys in 2011 for a 50th-anniversary world tour and the release of their 29th studio album, ‘That’s Why God Made the Radio’, in 2012. He performed his final concert in 2022 during a co-headlining tour with Chicago.

In 2024, it was publicly revealed that Wilson had been diagnosed with dementia and placed under conservatorship. His wife, Melinda Ledbetter – who had also served as his manager – passed away that same year. The couple had adopted five children and remained together from their marriage in 1995 until her death. Wilson was previously married to singer Marilyn Rovell, with whom he had two daughters, Carnie and Wendy, who later formed the pop group Wilson Phillips.

Wilson chronicled his life in memoirs published in 1991 and 2016, and his story was portrayed in the 2014 biopic ‘Love and Mercy’ and the 2021 documentary ‘Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road’.

Tributes poured in from across the music world. Bob Dylan reflected, “Heard the sad news about Brian today and thought about all the years I’ve been listening to him and admiring his genius. Rest in peace dear Brian.” Carole King called him her “friend and brother in songwriting,” adding, “We are so lucky to have his music.” Sir Elton John described Wilson as the “biggest influence” on his songwriting, while John Cale of The Velvet Underground hailed him as a “true musical genius.” Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood added, “The world is in mourning.”

Forming Paris Angels in 1990, Wagstaff became a renowned figure within Manchester’s music scene through his sonic characterisation of amalgamating both indie-rock guitar music with components of the acid house scene. These soundscapes were particularly evident in singles ‘Perfume’ and ‘Scope’, which successfully married the funky side of indie music with traditional dance music.  This time now known as the ‘Madchester’ era would solidify the guitarist’s legacy in music, even granting him a place in Shaun Ryder and Bez’s band Black Grape in 1993, playing on their debut ‘It’s Great When You’re Straight… Yeah’ (1995) and ‘Stupid Stupid Stupid’ (1997), before their disbandment in 1998.

Wagstaff would join forces with the pair again during a revised version of Happy Mondays in 1999, replacing their former-guitarist Mark Day. This reunion would see the band release comeback single ‘The Boys Are Back In Town’, which peaked at Number 24 on the UK Singles Chart, and provide support for Oasis during their 2000 tour.

As of yet, the circumstances surrounding the legendary guitarist’s death have not been revealed. Although it was known that Wagstaff was working on a new project with his long-term partner and Royal Shakespeare Company actor Tamara Smith.

Bez (otherwise known as Mark Berry), a friend and Happy Mondays and Black Grape bandmate, took to Instagram to post a nostalgic shot of Black Grape alongside the caption: “Mr Paul Wagstaff (Wags), remembering the good times. RIP my friend.”
Later this year, Black Grape will be touring the UK for the 30^th Anniversary of their debut ‘It’s Great When You’re Straight… Yeah’, which has left fans hoping the group will pay tribute to their late-guitarist.

Joining tributes, Broadcaster Terry Christian, shared: “R.I.P Paul ‘Wags’ Wagstaff guitarist with Manchester bands Paris Angels and of Course Blackgrape , and more recently Happy Mondays . The tributes surrounding the passing of Paul Wagstaff, the remarkable guitarist, have shed a light on his sonic and personal legacy as a forever-iconic figure of Manchester’s music scene.

His family confirmed his death on 10 March, having been on dialysis. The artist was born in Romford, Essex, Stedman was the eldest of five siblings who were shaped into a musical group by their father, Buster Pearson, a former recording artist.

Five Star was formed in 1983, and at the peak of their success in 1987, they won a BRIT Award for Best Group. The lineup consisted of Stedman, his brother Delroy, and sisters Lorraine, Deniece, and Doris. After a brief split, the group became a trio in 2001, with Stedman continuing to perform alongside Denise and Lorraine until 2006. The band reunited once more in 2012 before disbanding for good.

Beyond music, Stedman pursued other ventures, working as a dance instructor and running a limousine hire service. In 2006, he appeared on ‘All Star Talent Show’ on Channel 5, finishing in third place.

Renowned for their synchronized dance routines and glamorous, coordinated outfits, Five Star captivated audiences with their polished performances. Reflecting on his passing, the Pearson family shared a heartfelt statement with The Independent: “We are very saddened to say on this day – our beloved son/brother Stedman Pearson Jr has passed. He was a gentleman to the very end – in every way – and an amazing son, brother, and uncle. May the memories and love he gave to us and the world be our greatest comfort. He will be deeply missed.”

Fans and friends took to social media to express their grief and admiration. One person wrote on X/Twitter “I was sad to hear the passing of Stedman Pearson #fiverstar yesterday. I went to their home in Essex back in the 80’s & got their autographs. ‘The Slightest Touch’ will always hold a special place too. That song sparked the start of my spiritual journey 7 years ago. #RIP” 

Another shared: “Really sad to hear that Stedman Pearson from Five Star has died. I still absolutely love Five Star, I even walked down the aisle to the song Strong As Steel. Thank you Stedman, and thank you Five Star, for the music and memories you’ve given me!”

Others continued to express their admiration: “Stedman was so serious and precise with the dance routines! Sad to hear this”, someone else shared: “Loved Five Star as a child and still love hearing them on the radio. My deepest condolences to his family.”

Stedman Pearson leaves behind a legacy of music, performance, and joy, fondly remembered by fans and loved ones alike.

The official post gave a heartfelt overview of the guitarist’s musical legacy, branding James as one of the “true pioneers of music” and a “true gentleman”. Although, no cause of death has yet been released, it was noted that James passed away peacefully alongside his wife, son and daughter-in-law.

The punk icon co-founded The Damned in 1976 with Dave Vanian as vocalist, Raymond ‘Captain Sensible’ Burns as bassist and Christopher ‘Rat Scabies’ Millar as drummer. Despite only remaining in Damned’s lineup for two album cycles, James is credited for creating the UK’s first punk single, the group’s debut ‘New Rose’. Layered with punchy instrumentation and vibrant oration, it became renowned for exhibiting characteristics that would soon become quintessential to the UK punk scene. Prior to his exit from the band, the guitarist had a pivotal role in writing Damned’s debut album ‘Damned Damned Damned’ and sophomore album ‘Music For Pleasure’.

After joining Iggy Pop’s touring band in 1979, the punk-rock guitarist released two solo singles ‘Ain’t That A Shame’ and ‘Why, Why, Why?’, both of which feature The Police’s Stewart Copeland on drums.

In 1981, he would go on to form British-American punk supergroup The Lords of the New Church, with a line-up of four musicians from classic 1970s punk bands. With James performing alongside Stiv Bators (of the Dead Boys), Dave Tregunna (of Sham 69) and Nick Turner (of the Barracudas), the band would produce three albums before their disbandment in 1989, which would result in various line-up changes throughout the years.

Despite leaving Damned early on, James would continue to pay tribute to the group throughout his career. In 2013, he re-recorded nine of the group’s tracks for his third solo album ‘Damned If I Do’  and would later reunite with Vanian, Sensible and Scabies in October 2022 for a limited five-show UK Tour.

Since his death, tributes have poured in online from fans and those who personally knew Brian. Captain Sensible of Damned wrote a lengthy Facebook post reminiscing on the pair’s friendship and the beginning of Damned. Sensible wrote: “The riffmeister, Brian has gone – that final act that happens to us all, for most is a sad and miserable affair but while it’s truly awful our mate has been taken, I prefer to celebrate the life… and WHAT A LIFE Brian James had”.

While notifying fans of upcoming Damned shows, Sensible revealed they will “dedicate the set (and a few of his songs) to Brian James – without whom the Damned would not ever have happened”.

The tributes to James come when Damned are set to perform in Sao Paulo, Brazil tonight (7 March) before completing more South American shows of their tour.

Molland joined Badfinger in 1969, completing the four-member lineup most are familiar with. His first appearance came on 1970’s ‘No Dice’, an album which contained ‘No Matter What’, and ‘Without You’, the latter of which would be famously covered by both Harry Nilsson and Mariah Carey. In total, Molland played across seven Badfinger albums, contributing to some of their most famous tracks, including ‘Baby Blue’, which debuted on the UK Charts in 2013 after featuring in the final moments of the Breaking Bad finale.

In December, Molland’s partner Mary Joyce revealed that the guitarist had been in intensive care due to complications from diabetes, including a bacterial infection leading to septicaemia. A GoFundMe was set up in January to help cover the spiralling medical expenses, and has raised over $30,000 as of the time of writing. 

Among the donors was a ‘Richard Springfield’, possibly Rick Springfield, known for his hits ‘Jessie’s Girl’ and ‘I’ve Done Everything for You’. The pair worked together on a 2021 cover of Badfinger’s ‘Love is Gonna Come at Last’, and Springfield has never been shy on his admiration for the Welsh band. “Badfinger has always been one of my all-time favorite bands. I am often asked by journalists, ‘What is the one song you wished you had written?’ And my answer is ‘Baby Blue.’ What a perfect song! Their music was and is immortal.”

Born in Edge Hill, Lancashire, Molland contributed to Badfinger in various ways. Most commonly credited as a guitarist, he also sang and was credited as a songwriter, including on the original version of the previously mentioned ‘Love is Gonna Come at Last’. Through the band’s connection to The Beatles via Apple Records, Molland also appeared on John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ and George Harrison’s ‘All Things Must Pass’.

Badfinger had a tumultuous history, and is one of music’s many tragic tales. Molland kept the music of the band alive through his touring act, Joey Molland’s Badfinger. That one act performed over 300 shows since 1981, including 50 in 2024, with his last live performance in September coming just months before his illness.

Tributes poured in for Molland from both fans and fellow musicians. Monkees drummer Micky Dolenz shared photos of the pair together on tour and called Molland “a great musician and a great friend.” One fan on Reddit shared his own experience with the musician, recalling how he helped mentor the group and produce their demo recordings.

Molland’s death brings an end to one of music’s most under-appreciated bands, though offers us a chance to revisit their discography, as well as Molland’s solo work. Through his tracks with a variety of artists, including former Beatles, his music has been heard by millions around the world and is still played today.

Fay’s career was characterised by its unconventional trajectory. He released two albums in the early 1970s, ‘Bill Fay‘ (1969) and ‘Time of the Last Persecution‘ (1971), before fading into obscurity. Despite their initial commercial failure, these records gained a cult following over the years, appreciated for their melancholic beauty and spiritual depth. His music, often likened to that of Nick Drake and Leonard Cohen, blended folk, rock, and orchestral elements with deeply personal lyrics. Whilst Bill Fay’s music did not achieve significant commercial success during his early career, his 2012 album ‘Life Is People‘ marked a notable milestone, reaching number 56 on the UK Albums Chart. This achievement reflects the growing recognition of his work in later years.

Fay’s songs often explored themes of humanity, faith, and resilience. In later years, he spoke about faith in broad, universal terms, emphasising kindness, compassion, and the search for meaning rather than rigid dogma. His music resonated with both secular and religious listeners due to its introspective and humanistic approach. Whilst faith was a significant part of his songwriting, he wasn’t part of the 1970s ‘Jesus freak’ movement in the way some rock and folk musicians of the time were.

Fay’s mystique was further enhanced by his reclusive nature. He spent decades away from the industry, working ordinary jobs while his music quietly influenced new generations. His ability to craft songs filled with wisdom, melancholy, and understated beauty made him a singular voice in British music, ensuring his legacy would live on long after his passing. Nick Cave has spoken highly of Bill Fay’s music, recognising his songwriting talent and emotional depth, and Fay’s resurgence in the 2000s was partly due to recognition from artists like Cave.

Fay’s contributions to music were recognised by both fans and fellow musicians. Though he remained a largely private figure, his recordings gained respect for their craftsmanship and lyrical depth. His passing marks the end of a career that, whilst unconventional, left a lasting imprint on the folk and alternative music landscape.

The drummer was part of the band from their formation in the 70s up to their breakup in 1982. Although the band never fully reunited, Buckler played alongside Foxton, the bass player, on numerous occasions. The Jam released six studio albums on which Rick played, including the critically-acclaimed ‘All Mod Cons’ (1978) and ‘Sound Affects’ (1980).

Paul’s Instagram post also included a statement from Bruce Foxton. The 69-year-old musician has paid a glowing tribute to Rick, describing him as a “good guy and a great drummer”. By the time the band split, they were one of the biggest in the UK singles chart, reflecting their popularity at the time, especially with their song ‘Town Called Malice’.

Post The Jam, Rick Buckler formed a number of bands including Time UK, Sharp which also featured Foxton as a member and The Gift, named after The Jam’s last album and playing music from the band’s catalogue. From 2007 to 2009, he also toured with a band called From The Jam, a band playing covers from the group and later joined again by Foxton who to this day still tours with them.

The drummer lived with his wife and two children, Jason and Holly. He wrote a number of books on the history of The Jam, along with his own autobiography That’s Entertainment: My Life In The Jam, which was released in 2015.

The Surrey born drummer died after a short illness.

Robert Luis, founder of the Tru Thoughts label that Terror was signed to, gave a post on February 11 confirming his death and commemorating his contributions to music: . “Rest In Peace to Terror Danjah,” it reads. “It is very sad to hear the news of his passing. Everyone at Tru Thoughts sends condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and anyone effected by the news.

“He was a pioneering and influential producer helping lay the foundations and creativity within Grime with many releases, as well as pushing his own R&G genre with R&B singers over Grime productions. He has been and will remain an important part of music culture.” Terror, real name Rodney Pryce, was born in Forest Gate to Jamaican parents. Pryce started out as DJ, performing at jungle raves in the 90’s, before he turned his hand to music production. He was around from grime’s infancy, becoming a member of N.A.S.T.Y Crew, working with MC’s such as Wiley, Kano, Jammer, D Double E and more.

He’s regarded as one of the best grime producers of all time – his glitchy, dark sound can be heard on his “Frontline” instrumental, one of the scene’s most renowned riddims, and a vital release for Terror. He is also known for pioneering the ‘R&G’ sound – Rhythm & Grime. Alongside producers like DaVinChe and Scratcha DVA, he fused the softer elements of R&B with grime rhythms and tempos. One of his standout productions in this sub-genre is ‘So Sure’, a track with Kano and Sadie Ama that showcases a more mellow, romantic angle to grime production.

He released work through labels like Hyperdub and Planet Mu, as well as through his own label Hardrive. He remained active into the 2010’s, collaborating with a variety of artists like Wiley, IAMDDB and Fourtet. In 2019, Terror fell into a coma after suffering a stroke. He never made a full recovery, and he disappeared from the public eye, leaving his socials inactive. But he still managed to release music afterwards, dropping his album ‘Invasion‘ and the EP ‘Red Flag‘.

Tributes have flooded in from friends and peers – DJ and broadcaster Logan Sama spoke highly of his character, saying: “There are few people throughout my history in music that I have seen reach out, nurture and empower as many emerging artists with the tools to go on to lead successful careers than I did Terror Danjah. Rapper and TV personality Big Zuu also remembered his good nature, calling Terror “a very kind soul who always had time for the mandem and just wanted to see us win. Sending prayers and blessings to your family.”

Other musical peers have paid respects, with DJ Opim Hum calling him “the greatest to ever do it”, and Plastician writing “Such a talented producer and a great human being to boot. He’s never left my crates. Never will.” More tributes can be seen below.

“Marianne passed away peacefully in London today, in the company of her loving family.

She will be dearly missed.”

The pop icon, known for songs like ‘The Ballad of Lucy Jordan ’, had previously struggled with health, battling bulimia, breast cancer and emphysema caused by decades of smoking.

In 2020, she was hospitalized after contracting Covid-19, and doctors didn’t expect her to survive – ever resilient, she pulled through and released her 21^st album, ‘She Walks in Beauty‘, a year later.

Tributes have come in, with Mick Jagger posting on Instagram describing her “a wonderful friend, a beautiful singer and a great actress,” saying he was “so saddened”.

His bandmates Keith Richards and Ronnie Woods also posted online, paying their respects. Richards gave his “heartfelt condolences to Marianne’s family”, and Wood said that “Marianne will be dearly missed.”

The singer was married and divorced three times, having her only child with artist John Dunbar. She is survived by her son, Nicholas Dunbar.

Born in Hampstead in December 1946, Marianne was known for hits like ‘Come and Stay with Me’ and ‘As Tears Go By’, and roles in films such as 1968’s The Girl On A Motorcycle. She was a prolific entertainer, releasing six albums throughout the 60’s, and even contributing backing vocals for the Beatles.

She was also famous for her relationship with Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger. She was first discovered by the Stones’ manager at age 16 and given ‘As Tears Go By’, one of Jagger and Richards earliest compositions. Her soft, breathy voice and the songs folky arrangement were a hit, and the song made the top 10 in the UK.

Her whirlwind romance with Jagger was a hot topic for the tabloids. She was infamously found by police wearing only a bear skin rug when they raided Keith Richard’s home in 1967, with her and Jagger subsequently arrested.

Once her and Mick had split, she went through a rough period in her life, suffering from anorexia and heroin addiction. She spent two years homeless on the streets of Soho, before she started living in a squat.

She then bounced back, re-emerging in the late 70’s with two albums. Her 1979 new-wave influenced album, ‘Broken English’, may be her standout work. Included today in various top album lists, the record was a commercial and critical success, even earning her a grammy nomination. She also received high praise for her 1987 album, ‘Strange Weather’, reinventing her sound with blues and jazz influences.

She also had a productive career in film, television, and stage, with an output spanning nearly six decades. She first appeared as herself in Jean-Luc Godards’ 1966 crime comedy film Made in Usa.

Other notable roles include in I’ll Never Forget What’sisname, famously being the first person to use the F-word in mainstream film. Her first lead part came in The Girl on a Motorcycle, playing a newlywed who absconds on her motorbike to meet with a recent lover.

More recently, she starred in 2007’s Irina Palm, with a performance that received a nomination for a European Film Award for Best Actress. She also provided voice work for the 2021 remake of Dune as a Bene Gesserit, and in 2023’s Wild Summon.
