This year’s nominees contain a long list of British artists, including Adele, Dua Lipa, Glass Animals, Ed Sheeran, Genesis, Harry Styles, The Rolling Stones, Calvin Harris, Coldplay and FKA Twigs. Leading the way in nominations are Lipa and Sheeran who have received nine nominations each.

Lipa has been elected for Top Song Sales Artist, Top Billboard Global Artist and the coveted Top Female Artist award. The “Don’t Start Now” singer is up against Doja Cat, Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor Swift and fellow Brit Adele for the award. Lipa scored nominations in six individual categories for her 2020 single “Levitating”. The track sired nods for Top Hot 100 Song, Top Streaming Song, Top Selling Song, Top Radio Song, Top Billboard Global 200 Song and Top Radio Song. The Grammy-award winning artist has also been nominated for her collaboration with Sir Elton John; “Cold Heart (pnau remix)” is up for Top Dance/Electronic Song. Sir John took to Twitter to confirm the news, and within the post the famed musician expresses his excitement to receive the nomination.

Sheeran has also received numerous nominations for his hit single, “Bad Habits” which has incurred nominations in four categories including Top Selling Song, Top Radio Song, Top Billboard Global 200 Song and Top Billboard Global Song. The 31-year-old singer is also up for Top Song Sales Artist, Top Radio Songs Artist, Top Billboard Global 200 Artist, Top Billboard Global Artist and Top Male Artist. Also up for the Top Male Artist are Canadian artist Drake, Justin Bieber, Lil Nas X and The Weeknd.

The 2022 nominees for Top Soundtrack contain some of this year’s most popular films and TV series. Included within the nominees is the animated action series Arcane: League of Legends, Grammy-nominated duo Bones UK and legendary recording artist Sting are amongst the talent-filled track list. Also up for the accolade is the soundtrack to the film Sing 2, included within the tracklist are several beloved songs including “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” by Sir Elton John, “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” performed by U2 frontman Bono and the film’s title song and original composition “Your Song Saved My Life” performed by U2. Also included within the nominees are Disney musical Encanto, Tick, Tick…BOOM! and the film adaption of the musical In the Heights.

Another headlining act poised to win big at this year’s ceremony are British rockers Glass Animals. The Oxford formed band is up for Top Duo/Group and Top Rock Artist, and in both categories the band are up against American rock band Imagine Dragons. Glass Animals secured further nominations in two categories with their top five hit “Heat Waves”, which received two nominations for Top Streaming song and brand new category Top Viral Song.

The awards ceremony will be broadcasted live on NBC and will be available to watch via the streaming service Hulu and with a YouTube TV subscription.

British nominees also include Anne-Marie, the young singer-songwriter from Essex who reached the very top of the UK Single Chart with many hits, including Clean Bandit’s ‘Rockabye’. Anne-Marie has disclosed that she is part of the community herself, taking an active part inside the community to raise awareness on the LGTBQ+ issues. As she sings in her hit single ‘Perfect’: ‘I’ll love who I love, because this love is gender-free’. Sam Smith is also nominated – indeed, identifying as non-binary, he says: ‘Non-binary genderqueer is that you do not identify in a gender. You are a mixture of different things, you are your own special creation. I’m not male or female.’

Artists who are proponents of LGBTQ+ issues are also nominated. Harry Styles’ approach to gender fluidity, along with his transparent view on gender inclusivity within the music industry, got him a nomination for this award. Similarly, British pop band The 1975, especially their lead singer Matt Healy, has always been keen on merging members of the LGBTQ+ community throughout his career. The band is also been active in protests to protect the community, in particular against Dubai’s recent laws punishing the gay community.

Sarah Garrett, founder of the British LGBT Awards, said: ‘These awards shine a light on those who have stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the LGBT+ community, during what has been an extremely challenging 12 months. The nominees, which include an exciting mix of famous LGBT+ faces, allies and organisations have all demonstrated a commitment to advancing LGBT+ rights. The awards on 27 August, which will take place after lockdown restrictions are eased, will be a huge celebration that’s needed more than ever.’

This is not the first major award Ross has been nominated for in his long-running music career, he has also won in many categories he has been nominated in. In 2010, he joined Reznor to win the Academy Award for Best Original Score for their work on The Social Network. In 2013, they teamed up once again to win the Grammy  for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media for their work on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Ross and Reznor have a long history of producing award-winning scores and soundtracks since their collaborations began in 2005 when Ross worked with Reznor’s band Nine Inch Nails. Ross and Reznor developed a kinship through their collaborations and eventually Ross was invited to become an official member in 2016.

Ross has been working in film and television scoring for more than a decade when he first worked on the soundtrack for the television series Touching Evil with his wife Claudia Sarne and his brother Leopold Ross. He won his first award for a score, when in 2010 he was given the BMI award and the World Soundtrack Award for his work on The Book of Eli.

This year Ross and Reznor face a varied and talent group of opponents for the award, Other nominees in the Best Score Motion Picture category include Alezandre Desplat, Ludwig Goransson, James Neton Howard, The United States vs. Billie Holiday, Judas and the Black Messiah, The Trial of the Chicago 7, The Life Ahead, One Night in Miami. Mank and Soul will be going up against The Midnight Sky and Tenet among many others.

This year’s Golden Globe Awards will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler  this February. 28th, originally scheduled for January but delayed because of saftey concerns surrounding the Covid19 global pandemic. The show will be live-streamed from The Hilton in Beverly Hills, California and will be aired a 8 p.m. Eastern US time on the American network NBC.
