The North London Indie powerhouses Wolf Alice have shared the first episode of a new mini-documentary series entitled The Making of Blue Lullaby. After releasing a “lullaby version” of their 2021 single “The Last Man On Earth” last week, the band will release a total of four tracks to be given the bare-bones treatment in a reimagining of some of their former hits (due to drop on the 24th of June 2022).

The series will see the director Stroma Cairns tell Wolf Alice’s story of their process for these alternate versions. Her style was described here as; “An intimate and honest filming approach, paired with an innate love of storytelling.” With beautiful 16mm footage and a naturalistic fly on the wall POV that sees the band truly in their element, as they experiment in Paul Epworth’s Church Studios in Crouch End, London.

Alongside our new EP, we’ve also filmed a series of mini docs. You can watch The Making of Blue Lullaby episode one now. https://t.co/4md3yEUGMF pic.twitter.com/5fjGYSWnni

In the words of bassist Theo Ellis; “We’ve got a lot of versions of these songs that we’ve played in different sessions, and when we were working through them, we realised that there was these alternatives that were really cool. We were so proud of them, we wanted to share them.” Take a look at the full clip down below:

Along with the revamped edition of “The Last Man On Earth”, Blue Lullaby will include new versions of “Lipstick On The Glass”, “How Can I Make It OK?” and “No Hard Feelings”. To announce the current project, Wolf Alice’s singer Ellie Roswell stated; “We had a really nice moment during the ‘Blue Weekend’ campaign singing one of our songs with a choir and we wanted to experience that again with a few other songs, especially as there are a lot of harmonies and a lot of vocal layering on ‘Blue Weekend’. Hearing multiple voices singing together is an unparalleled feeling to me so I’m happy we got to record this experience and I hope people enjoy it.”

Blue Lullaby will be released via Dirty Hit and can be pre-saved here. Elsewhere, the band will be jet-setting around Europe on an extensive tour, including some North American headline gigs later in the year. They will also be supporting Harry Styles on select dates in his European ‘Love On Tour’.

Domestically, you can catch Wolf Alice on the summer festival circuit at such events as; Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds Festival and TRNSMT.

A press release for the film provides the following description, “The film features George’s incredible, unseen archival and private home footage, giving viewers a first-person account of this dramatic period in his life, revealing how he became one of the most influential recording artists of all time, who alone fought a corner for all artists by challenging the standard recording contract helping to rewrite the rules of the music industry. He talks about why he stepped out of the lime light and turned his back on celebrity. ”

The film focuses on a difficult but poignant time in Michael’s life and career and charts the period after the release of his debut album Faith. The documentary pays special attention to the making and release of the singer’s 1990 album Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1, the infamous court battle with his record label which followed the release is also fully documented.

The singer’s personal life is fundamentally an important element in the film, George Michael Freedom Uncut shows the painful journey the singer endured following the passing of his first love Anselmo Feleppa. The two met at the Rock in Rio concert and became a couple in 1992, Feleppa tragically lost his life in 1993 due to an AIDS-related brain haemorrhage. The film shows the singer’s bravery in the face of tragedy when he must endure sadness again with the passing of his mother.

The main theme seen throughout the documentary is Michael’s meteoric rise to the important cultural figure he became. Featured within the documentary is the artist’s most beloved music video and single “Freedom! 90”, all supermodels which were famously featured in the video appear in the documentary to discuss the production’s making. Released in 1990, the video became a worldwide hit and marked the birth of a new generation within culture and the music industry. The video was directed by Oscar Nominated and Grammy award-winning David Fincher, the director best known for his work with pop music’s most successful artists.

The film’s co-director and producer David Austin has given a statement concerning the release, “The film is George’s final work. Narrated by George himself, it is the complete story. George Michael was an inspiring artist whose story deserves to be shared on the big screen globally.” Sony Music Entertainment’s President of Premium Content Tom Mackay has also supplied a statement “In honor of George’s birthday this June, we are thrilled to be working with David Austin and our partners at Trafalgar Releasing to bring fans unprecedented access to his extraordinary life both on and off stage.”

Scottish rock trio Biffy Clyro have announced a new documentary, titled Cultural Sons of Scotland, which will be released on 25th February via Amazon Prime. Detailing the making of their album The Myth of the Happily Ever After, it will also examine the group’s twenty years of making music together, looking at how the bonds of friendship have weathered amid pandemics and so many years.

The official synopsis says that “the new feature length film takes viewers on the journey with Simon, Ben and James as they return to their home in Ayrshire to create their latest, critically acclaimed album in the most unusual of studio environments. The film explores how the experience of recording an album in Scotland for the first time prompted the band to reflect on the importance of where they’re from, how this has influenced their career to date and reinforced their lifelong bond as friends and bandmates.“

The band (which comprises singer/guitarist Simon Neil, drummer Ben Johnston and bassist James Johnston) released The Myth of the Happily Ever After last October, with it becoming their sixth Top 5 album in a row. Recorded much quicker than their previous material and released as a surprise album, Neil has spoken in an interview recently on the more spontaneous approach the record had.

“Normally when I’m writing there’s 18 months of working on the songs. This one felt so spontaneous …. We did no pre-production. We would normally record ourselves in the practice room. This was like, ‘Here’s a song, let’s record it …. Because of the pandemic, the purpose of the music felt more pure, knowing that we weren’t going to go out on a promotional tour.“

The documentary also features the group’s performance at Glasgow Green last year, after over a year of being unable to perform. Speaking on the difficulty of performing after so long, Neil said “It was tough! … The big step for us was just even getting in a room and playing live together. That was the first time where things made sense …. There’s a level of fear that builds just having not engaged with more than three people for the last 18 months …. I think that led to something truly transcendental happening at the shows.”

Biffy Clyro are also soon to embark on a tour, going through North America in the spring. They’re also due for some dates in Europe after having to postpone due to the pandemic. If you’re interested in tickets, you can look here.
