This week is Mental Health Awareness Week (10 – 17 May), and battles with mental health issues have been prevalent in the music industry for decades. Only in recent years are open discussions being had about what this looks like and ways to deal with it. One organisation that has been leading the way in providing tools and spaces for these conversations are UK-based charity Mind.

Mind states that musicians are three times more likely to suffer from depression than the general public, amongst other mental health problems. What they have done to combat this is collect stories from real people in the electronic music industry, who shed light on what they’re dealing with as well as tips to help others find healthy ways to get through problems, including the pandemic. In partnership with Ninja Tune, Paradigm, Percolate and POLY, they have also created support guides for organisations, artist managers, employees, and freelancers.

The head of Workplace Wellbeing at Mind, Emma Mamo, explains: “We know that working in the music industry can be very rewarding and offers many opportunities. However, it comes with a unique set of challenges, including irregular hours, financial insecurity and high pressure – all of which may have an effect on people’s mental health and wellbeing. Coronavirus restrictions, Brexit, and fluctuating income have only made existing problems in the industry worse, so it’s important that people across the industry can access vital support if and when needed.” And while they are currently focusing on electronic music, a lot of these problems are universal; the resources available are impactful for people who work in all parts of the music world.

You can find this information and more useful tools at their website here.

These two shows will follow on from his ‘Staying at Tamara’s’ tour. The new confirmed shows will be going ahead for the 24th and 25th of

The 26 year old has also become an official ambassador for Mind, and an openly spoken sufferer of anxiety. He tweeted, “These will be the final two shows of the Staying At Tamara’s album before I take myself off to write the next record, so it’s going to be a celebration to remember… and all for a great cause.”

The ‘Budapest’ singer made an announcement on Twitter regarding the upcoming gigs.

Ladies & Gentlemen, today I am announcing 2 new UK shows on the 24th & 25th September in the beautiful @RoyalAlbertHall, all in aid of @mindcharity.

The chairman of Mind, Steve Spring, produced a statement to say, “We are almost entirely reliant on voluntary donations, so quite simply couldn’t continue important support services, such as our Infoline, without the generous donations of people like George and his fans.”

Throughout this summer, Ezra has played at festivals including Parklife, TRNSMT, Isle of Wight and Glastonbury, while going on tour with his second studio album, ‘Staying at Tamara’s’. The album has now been certified three times platinum, given four stars in an NME review, wherein which Nick Reilly wrote, “Ultimately, it’s this blend of new-found maturity and crowd-pleasing choruses that transform Ezra’s second offering into the perfect progression from the sound of his debut.” Nick also said, “It’s teeming with uplifting tunes intent on burrowing their way into the deepest recesses of your ears”.

Earlier in 2019, Ezra, the 2019 Brit Awards winner for British Male Solo Artist, performed a sell out UK arena tour, in which two shows were held at London’s 02 Arena. Both of his studio albums, ‘Wanted on Voyage’, and ‘Staying at Tamara’s’, reached the number one spot in the UK Album Charts.
